I think it's probably a new product on Amazon as Camel x3 doesn't give much history, although ASUS Chromebook C201 has been out for a while. Out of 3 colours (red, navy blue, light blue) this is the only one that Amazon ships to Australia.

USD $169 + $14.56 postage = USD $183.56 delivered =~ AUD $246

Specification:

  • Rockchip RK3288 ARM CPU @ 1.8GHz
  • 4GB RAM
  • 16GB SSD
  • 11.6" 1366x768 (I believe these are TN display)
  • ChromeOS
  • Up to 13 hours
  • 0.98kg

This will get Play Store support to run Android apps. I am typing on ASUS Chromebook C100 Flip right now with the same CPU and it's not fast but should handle most web activities fine. C201 does not have an IPS touch screen but has a very long battery life, making it a great travel computer.

  • 12V 2A (24W) power adapter for these. Adapter head is weird. Looks almost like micro usb but isn't.

    Review here:
    http://www.trustedreviews.com/asus-chromebook-c201-review
GOOD 'The Chromebook C201 features a microSD, micro HDMI, audio jack and two USB 2.0 ports.'
BAD Chromebook C201’s use of a proprietary charging port, Screen Quality is 'adequate', not HD

Seriously tempted to pull the trigger on this.

As a light user - mainly just internet usage (OzBargain) no gaming, playing AVIs, word processing/printing PDFs. Anyone recommend this?

Just looking on Ali - There's a seller with 100 varieties of neoprene cases for $10.63 delivered http://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-PC-Bag-10-11-6-12-13-13-3…

  • I suppose ARM is better for Android apps, no difference for ChromeOS?
Not so great for Linux or windows apps under Crouton, e.g. no Skype, I think.

      • Ok, my example is outdated, but you seem to have missed the point. It will not run x86 binaries for Linux or windows.
Not a problem for most people, just fyi.

ARM Linux is surprisingly usable. I do quite a bit of development on my Chromebook C100 Flip using Debian 8 for ARM, developing in PHP, Python and Golang. I guess it really depends on what you want to use it for. Yes some people would want to run x86 Linux so they can run MS Office with WINE. That would be tiny minority of ChromeOS users though.

  • Two things turn me off Chromebooks: the need for an internet connection and the fact that it's a Google device.

The second is the biggest issue for me.

      What's wrong with Google?

      • -1

They're an advertising business that uses Android and Chromebook devices to mine data about the user and everything connected to the devices.

        • yeah, they are big into analytics in the USA, give them some data and they cross correlate to what they get from browsers and peoples google accounts.

that is why many schools don't use their mail system anymore ….. they used to mine it with the excuse "we are looking at your mail so that we can improve the service to give you a better experience" Big issues when you look at minors emails so that you can post adds in the browser targeting them …….

From your account (dashboard) you can actually look at the data Google has stored about you and your habits ….. takes hours to delete as you can only do one item at a time …. no "delete all". I gave up after 50 minutes and 400 items left to delete…… these aren't cookies in browser, these are stored by google as part of your google account so that they can target adds across your devices ….. used to wonder why they know what I browsed on my tablet when I used the browser on my phone.

At least with Android 6 you can now load apps without having to give them access to your contacts, etc.

You don't need internet connection. Mining for data, everyone does it so go troll elsewhere.

  • At this price point it's close to the cost of a chinese 10" Windows 10 tablet and keyboard / cover, uses std ports and you can load Office if you need to type a resume or something.

    • How do you load Office onto Chrome OS?

      • you can't load office on chrome OS hence for same money buy a chinese windows 10 tablet with a keyboard cover, my teclast was $320 for 10" tablet with keyboard, windows 10 and 64gb flash.

Chrome OS is good for kiosks, we used to use them as public kiosks so people could use browsers, easy to lock down.

  • It's USD214.99 now. :(

  • Thanks again for the post Scotty - mine arrived today (Purchased the day deal was posted). Loving the device!
