  • They offered me 42% off electricity and 26% off for gas over the phone after i joined their plan and called back later to cancel the transfer…

There was also $200 off the first bill ($100 for elect and $100 for gas)….

The quote was for Melbourne… No direct debit required…

Da fuk? 42% why am I feeling like bargaining for persian rug here? Should just offer us all good price to begin with.

      • Lol yeah I was offered 44% by EA when they found out I was leaving and called me up to try to get me to stay. But I said no more of this S@#^! That's why I changed to Momentum. So sick of having to threaten to leave before getting a good discount after they have taken the previous one away. At least with Momentum I know what I'm paying for with none of this f@(#$ discount sht…

But yeah, YMMV as Momentum may not be the cheapest in your area, but they sure were for me!

      • Welcome to deregulation and competition between retailers…

      • reminds of a quote i heard that at the Grand Bazaar that the starting price is 3x what they actually hope to get. So they start at $300 for a rug and you offer them $120, they're already ahead. Sounds just like your comparision :-)

    • Can I ask what your breakdown for lecky is?
      (i.e. daily connection & c/kW/h?)

        • thanks - wow I remember getting those rates with Citipower around 7-8yrs ago. Although I was only paying ~50c/day for connection. well done to you

Now I'm with Jemina and even with 42%off it's ~17.8c/kWh.

    • hi jv, do you mind to share your agl account please?
the AGL Customer Service said, they can match your rates by validating the account
      thanks

      • +1

        I'm an Origin customer.

I applied to AGL based on the rates in the description of this deal.
Origin later called me and offered the rates in my first comment.
I then called AGL to cancel the transfer who then offered to match Origin's rates.
I decided to stay with Origin because their tariffs were slightly better based on my usage so I went ahead and cancelled the transfer to AGL.

So the rates I quoted are definitely do-able, but you may need to try and switch providers to achieve them.

Below is a link to the electricity tariff emailed to me by Origin.
        https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/14180/41180/capture.jp…

        • I cant get that offer from Origins website. Anyway. Thanks for clarifying that up. I wrong assumed your comment
          Cheers jv

        • @eegos:

I cant get that offer from Origins website

It's not on their website, they called me and offered those rates after I decided to switch to AGL.
To accept them, I had to call AGL and cancel the transfer.

The discount is valid for 12 months, but there is no contract and I can leave any time without penalty…

        • @jv: yes jv. Since I'm not Origins cust. I wont get that offer. And if i cant get that offer from Origins. Agl wont pricematch it

        • +1

          @eegos:

But neither did Origin or AGL offer me that initially too. It's only because I was switching that their retention team called me. The switching process takes a couple of weeks, and your original company should be calling you to change your mind. The retention team are the ones authorised to give the biggest discounts.

So just switch to the one with the biggest discount, make sure there is no lock-in contract and wait… You can't lose…

    • +1

      Thanks JV!

Got 44% off elec & 30% gas with direct debit discount but no $200 credit though…

      • Awesome !!!

  • @amsut1
    Which state are you in?

    • +17

      state of shock…

    • +1

      I am in VIC

  • VIC only for this rate?

    • Based on others comment, I think this is VIC only. This is what came up when I open AGL. They might track my IP address.

  • Not surprised Vic,

Victoria has some of the worse rates in Australia.

The % is meaningless without the actual rates.

  • If I am current customer of AGL electricity and gas and just changed the plan not too long ago, am I still eligible to change it or am I locked in already for 12 months or so?

    • that depends on your contract… why don't you call them and ask.

    • you can change plan any time but AGL will not give you the $$$ online bonus

      • +1

but AGL will not give you the $$$ online bonus

They will if you try and switch retailers…

        • Yeah no harm in trying, let's see what they say.

  • Where can I get the BEST electricity plan in Sydney?

    • +1

the one you negotiate… they are always better than the advertised ones.

      • My contract with Energy Australia is about to end in a few days time. I need something to negotiate with them for a better deal. I have no intention to switch to AGL.

        • +1

I switched from Origin to AGL for discounts similar to the OP's above. A couple of weeks later, Origin called me and made the offer I posted above. I called AGL to cancel the transfer, and they offered me exactly the same discounts as Origin.

  • NSW or VIC?

    • link says VIC

  • +1

    For NSW - https://www.agl.com.au/campaigns/powercombo/nsw
Up to 23% off electricity &
Up to 10% off gas usage charges
Sign up to both plans online and get $100 in credits.

    • What about their standalone electricity plan?

      • +1

Looks like 15% for electricity and 8% for gas.
        T&Cs for Power Combo:
This Savers™ Electricity Plan lasts for 12 months and consists of a 15% Pay on Time discount & 8% Double Up discount. This Savers™ Gas Plan lasts for 12 months and consists of a 8% Pay on Time discount and 2% Double Up discount. The Double Up Discount only applies when you combine your electricity and gas accounts with AGL at time of billing.

    • compare the rates, since earlier this year, its unregulated now.

Our rates aren't as crazy as Vic, but its starting too

Last time I check earlier this year, AGL has the worse rates,

  • You went with AGL - you crazy?

    • Not sure if I missed something. What's the problem with agl if they offer the best rates/discount?

      • +1

Bad customer service + higher rate then other providers.

        • +1
          • this, I just did a comparison, initially showed I can save around $18 based on my last bill, but after discovering that they only offer discount to usage, not supply charge, recalculation show Lumo actually save around $5. AGL is sort of Telstra for energy.

If you want to save on energy bill, best to shop around every few month because they keep changing offers and rates, your current provider might not be the cheapest anymore, I think they deliberately colluding to confuse us.

        • At least their rate is better than Alinta Energy.

        • @lgacb08:

they keep changing offers and rates

rates don't change every few months…

        • @jv: no but other providers come up with different rates and offers and yours might not be competitive anymore.

      • From what I've checked earlier this year, they have the best discount.. but worse rates.

  • Just please make sure you check who is sending you emails. I've had lots of customers getting crypto viruses from scammers pretending to be AGL. Check the senders domain before clicking on any links.

  • Energy Australia currently offer 28% off electricity and 18% off for gas (Plus 2 months supply charge credit), not sure how their rates compare to AGL.

    • what is the best rate for nsw?

    • You should be able to get better than that (in Vic).

I currently have 37% off electricity and 26% off gas.
Guy higher in the thread said he managed a better rate off electricity - 42% but he had to organise a new supplier and then cancel the transfer. All i did was give them a call, was less than 10 minutes.
I did let them know that i if i went to the effort of finding a cheaper price elsewhere that i wouldn't cancel the transfer regardless of what they offered.

      • The 42% offered was with AGL. I was offered 44% by Energy Australia when they called me to confirm I was leaving them and tried to get me to stay. The guy was probably feeling a bit p!ssed that I was so adamant about leaving them even with the offer of 44% off that "they don't usually offer to just anyone"…….. lols.

  • +2

So % discount is meaningless in the same way Telcos used to say $700 worth of calls per month (1 min call = $10)?

    • So % discount is meaningless

Not if you're staying the same provider…

      • I just used my smart meter data to compare the rates and found that AGL's fixed plan without any discount would actually give me much lower cost than the Set and Forget Plan with 35% discount.

    • yep! and don't for the connection fee in both. That's where they gouge you.

But hopefully rates in Vic will drop on 1 Jan when TFIT solar tarrif/subsidy ends. That'll only leave those with the original subsidy left.

  • I reckon Momentum or Lumo energy offers the best rate & discount in Victoria for both Gas and Electricity. Everyone should consider Glo Energy too. Even though it is a tiny company, it offers better rate for electricity.

    • Momentum doesn't offer discounts on rates. The only discount they have is 2% if you pay by direct debit.

      • +1

discount is meaningless, see my comments above

        • I'm with Momentum exactly because of that if you saw my comments above too? =)

      • +1

Even then their rates are often better than many. You can get heaps of discount from Lumo, but you would end up paying the same rate. For instance, Momentum charges me 16 cents per kWh whilst other companies would charge me around 18~21c per kWh after their discount.

    • Powershop is probably the cheapest. But it's hard to compare as they don't have a connection charge they just have a variable c/kWh.

      • Powershop does charge "daily fixed charges" which is basically a daily connection fee.

        • no I just get a kWh charge, the connection charge is built into that rate.

          See the faq
          http://www.powershop.com.au/how-much-does-it-cost/

        • @supabrudda:

Your electricity price per unit may look higher than your current bill but don't be fooled - remember that your per unit price includes daily charges, and even GST. What you see is what you pay.

So, Powershop DOES charge you the daily connection fee. It may not show up on your bill, but it is still a part of your c/kWh charge. If you check their quote, it clearly states they charge you anytime rate AS WELL AS the daily fixed charges.

        • @motor89:

I said But it's hard to compare as they don't have a connection charge they don't have one it's all calculated as part of your kWh charge, hence why I said But it's hard to compare.

They don't charge a daily fixed charge. If I don't use any electricity, I don't get charged. If I'm with AGL or any other provider, I get charged a connection fee/charge + $0 usage (~34/mth for Jemena).

It's no different to the old phone cards, some had no connection fee & higher rates/min others have a high connection charge but low rates/min. the no connection charge ones don't charge a connection charge, but they rolled it up into usage charges. They still didn't have a connection fee.

        • @supabrudda: So Opwershop does charge the daily connection fee, but only when you use it on that particular date. Now that makes sense.

Since their daily connection fee was clearly stated on their website, I thought it was absurd that you claim that it is difficult to compare rates with Powershop.

Thanks OP. I am an existing AGL customer. I was on the old plan with 5% discount (electricity, 12% for gas). This post reminded me to review my existing plan with them. Switching plan was easy, can all be done online….. New plan is way better… Though in the fine print they stipulated that they can change the rates at anytime…..

  • Can anyone make a suggestion of a good deal here in SA? We don't get the Deals other states get, and my AGL 24/14% disc elec/gas is about to expire. I think I was on a honeymoon plan something like that. Appreciate the responses folks…

  • +1

Your rates are heavily dependent on where the address is. Suppliers have different negotiated rates with the retail providers (AGL, Momentum, Lumo, GloBird etc). To put into perspective of which is the cheaper, you will need to know what's your daily average usage. From there, you would then be able to assess which retail provider is the cheapest for your address. FYI, certain suppliers have tiered rates (peak and balance) such as AusNet while United are on single peak rate.

Don't get fooled by the amount of discounts provided and/or potentially low supply rates etc.

    1) Where's your address - this will tell you which supplier your retail provider is getting it from
    2) What's your average usage - this will tell you how much you'll be paying

Do also check the contract details of whether they lock in the rates (as Momentum does) versus locking in the 'discount rates'.

  • Wasn't there a gov run comparison website?

    • Unfortunately, you can't compare Energy companies in Victoria on the federal government's comparison website.

Can anyone beat the energyaustralia 17% electricity/ 15% gas offer in sydney? I compared the power rates c/kwt and supply charges and EA is cheaper than agl and origin. Right now there is 2 months supply free and $25 credit on signup until 27 July.

    • I'm going to renew my EA contract with the new 17% + $25 credit plan. My previous plan gave me 16% + $50 credit.

Today my 82 year old mother got a nice letter from AGL stating that going forward all paper bills will incur an extra $1.50 charge per bill and an extra $2 charge if payed OTC at post office.

Even then she refused to switch from AGL despite them being overly expensive (and twice their contractors trying to rip her off for quoted work).

Luckily I managed to talk them OUT of the charges by telling them she doesn't have a computer (truth) and would switch if the charges weren't waived.
