This is the sale I've been holding out for.

Herman Miller isn't for everybody and I highly recommend sitting in one before buying - my old work had the Aeron size C classic and they were really good to sit in. Also recently tried the Vantum and that wasn't too bad either.

Next year it would be $2025?

    • Next financial year

    • +4

      This is last year's price.

  • +1

If the size C was comfy maybe make sure you try a Size B before buying.

If it fits, godspeed 👏 one of the best purchases I've ever made

    • +2

Old work had the size C because most of my colleagues would tuck their legs in or sit crosss legged but a B would be good enough.

    • +1

I would also like to emphasise this point. I have a B because it was on sale, but should have bought a C - the sides of the seat cut into the sides of my thighs and make it a bit uncomfortable.

The other thing I would mention is the mesh means in Winter your ass is cold - I have taken to sitting on a thin blanket.

      • I just dont sit on mine nude in winter :)

  • +14

hard to imagine these things can be so expensive. What's a good value office chair that's reasonably affordable?

    • +7

Shihoo on Amazon have been decent - I got mine on special a good 12 months back and can’t complain.
Big range and I replaced the wheels with roller blade wheels which removes the sound on my floor.
I got 2x for around circa $350 each from memory

Just search for the name on Amazon. Wide range.
      URL is long…

URL trick: remove everything from the question mark onwards and it'll take you to the same place. Everything from the question mark onwards is just tracking/referral parts usually.

        • +1

Can even get rid of the / before ? right

          • @Big-Deal: bloat

          • +1

@Big-Deal: Depends on the website. Some can be picky about a / being left out.

            • @Alzori: Thanks what does the / at the end actually mean

              • +1

@Big-Deal: The forward slash is a separator between parts of the URL, like levels of a file folder structure. Most web servers will be smart enough to ignore a leftover separator with nothing following it, so abc.com/hello/ will be parsed the same as abc.com/hello and directed to the same endpoint. Some websites will always expect xyz.com/exactURL/ though and complain when you try to navigate to xyz.com/exactURL because it "doesn't exist on this server" or something.

      • Awesome, thanks. That looks good!

      • +1

Can also purchase from sihoo website, currently they drop the black M57 to $319 and can apply code 25OFF to bring it to $294, which is below the $300 for depreciating the asset if you are claiming tax deduction.

      • these look like ergohuman purchased and rebranded lol. nothing would suprise me anymore XD haha

    • +1

Maybe something from Haworth, Humanscale or even Okumura. Recess is a really good brand too and is a NSW company.

      • +4

Just watch out when buying Haworth chairs from Officeworks, I bought the Soji and it turns out they replace the arms with the arms from the Very so that they can include the Soji 4D arms on the Fern at a lower cost.

        • This is not even remotely possible, I've seen all 3 chairs together, and the arms for the Soji and Fern (and Very) are at completely different positions and types. The arms on the Zody and Very are exactly the same though. The way the Soji arms connects is completely different as well.

Who told you what you mentioned above?

      • +3

Recess is actually just a reband of US chair brand Branch Furniture, though they hide this pretty well.

Branch Furniture has a reputation for being well-marketed but poor quality.

      • Will obviously depend on your body but I have a Aeron at home and a humanscale liberty at work. The aeron is leagues above on another level for comfort and much better lumbar support. I don’t notice Aeron after a day of work but with the humanscale I’ll start feeling a sore back after a couple of hours. YMMV

    • +2

Just buy a used Herman Miller. Got mine for $1k and it's the latest remastered.

      • +1

        Where?

        • Yeah for sure 2nd hand. I got a Sayl for $200 at an office clearout during covid and its amazing, used for 5 years now still feels and supports like new. Would only recommend this chair if you are shorter though, I’m 170cm, and taller people generally complain about this chair because it’s not super adjustable.

Steelcase Leap would be my next pick, super adjustable, very comfy. I couldn’t gel with the aeron, went to the showroom and had them adjust it and everything 🥲

If in sydney, CBD office furniture has fairly constantly rotating 2nd hand stock: https://cbdofficefurniture.com.au/product-category/used_furn…

        • Facebook marketplace is probably your best bet. No reason to pay full price for basically the same thing, just be prepared to give it a full steam cleaning (cheap one at Kmart for $20) and douse it in 70% isopropyl alcohol.

    • +1

I've got the Ergotune Supreme. Came down to around $650 on sale. I got it last year and I'm pretty happy with it.

For a cheaper one, Ikea Markus is pretty solid imo. I got mine 2020 during lockdown and it's held up well.

      • +2

Can confirm the Ergotune Supreme is good.

      • I didn't like my Ikea Markus. I guess it wasn't right for my body because I had pains sitting in it. I got rid of it after a few months after I gave it a good shot.

    • +1

indeed, I don't care how much this is "reduced" by from an overinflated RRP… a $2104 (delivered) or up to circa $3000 for some of the other listed chairs is NOT A BARGAIN!
Plenty of other high end supportive alternatives are half this price or less (as these used to be!)

    • 2nd hand Herman miller or steelcase is best value. If you can get invoice, claim on tax.

    • +1

You have to sit in them to know the answer to that question.

The advantage of these expensive chairs is the the warranty and the build. They are super solid.

It's worth checking out FB marketplace to see what office furniture is getting liquidated then go to the showrooms and try them out. Of just try out the chairs you are interested in.

    • +1

Second hand Steelcase Leap. I have an Aeron, it's good but I got it over a decade ago for $300. At $2000 it's obscene, if I bought a chair now I'd go with a Steelcase which go for very reasonable prices second hand.

    • I've been sitting on Herman Miller chairs for like 20 years now as every big company has them.

Every day I dream of coming home to my comfortable, padded Langfjall Ikea chairs.

    • They have doubled in price since covid. There are better chairs at lower price points.

      I bought this recently.

My sciatica nerve pain is a little less severe.

“Look at me, I have a chair, I’m the king of the castle” - Borat

    • +2

It's has the placebo effect of your back pain suddenly goes away :)

    • +2

these people buying Herman Miller thinks you can never criticise their chair purchase lol

      • -6

There's got to be some kind of psychological effect playing a role there. But I CBF looking it up.

OMG why did I waste so much money this chair isn't THAT much better than a $300 chair from Officeworks/Amazon"

Gets translated between their private thoughts and their mouths/fingers to become

YASSSSss this was soOooo worth it. I cannot fault this chair at all. It is the bees knees and boy does it please.

If there is a negative review it will get jumped on

There's an adjustment period. You're clearly not past the adjustment period. You don't even know what comfort feels like.

      • +8

Next week my Herman Miller turns 17… zero issues.

        • +2

Mine is about 24 - I'd have to dig up records but I think I bought it in 2001. I had to replace the seat after the mesh tore a couple years ago but aside from that still one of the best purchases I've ever made.

          • +2

@trawg: Yep I bought mine in 2001 or 2002 in London, and its still bulletproof back in Sydney now.. only thing i've replaced was the lumbar cushion.

      • +2

As somebody who hates spending money on hyped status symbols, I was almost always buying <$300 chairs for my home office use. I changed 4 over the past 20 years (including Metro Buro that I thought was decent and paid $470 in 2014). I also used another 4-5 models paid by employers and they were notably more expensive than what I was happy to pay.

None of them can hold candle to to Herman Miller Mirra and Aeron. FTR I have not heard of Herman Miller until 2015, and then though that it is piece of overdesigned fashionable status symbol for hipsterous (profanity). Well… typing this, sitting in 10 year old Mirra (which I got for $150 when office closed during Covid) - still looks and feels new. And I can tell you I'm planning to buy Aeron Remastered before EOFY. Given that I spent $1200-1400 on office chairs for myself over the 20 years - none of them lasting more than 5 years, if Aeron last 12 years (their warranty) I'll be golden given the comfort of the chair.

These chairs are one of those buy-once-cry-once purchases that I would warmly recommend to anyone who spends their working day sitting.

    • +4

As opposed to some of the other bogus garbage we spend our money on? Have you see the price of high-end graphics cards, for example?

If you work from home—a good, quality, ergonomic chair is a no-brainer. It doesn't need to be a Herman Miller, but they are fantastic.

I would say I've spent close to the amount of my current Aeron over the years on garbage IKEA chairs et al. I finally bit the bullet back in 2021. Buy once, cry once. Should have done it earlier before they skyrocketed!

  • +12

I remember when i paid $1100 for mine brand new…..those were the days.

    • +9

Was $990 brand new back in 2011: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/43365

(People in that thread complained that it was still too expensive!)

      • bought one around covid for 1400, not sold by LE but delivered by them.

        • I bought a sayl for $600 at LE. Great chair, no issues.

Regret not getting an aeron or embody for that same price of $1400 during that time covid period

    • +1

I lived in the US in 2013 and bought one from Amazon for USD$597.55 at a time when the AUD was like $1.10. It was practically free!

  • +1

How do I check what size I have in my office?

Also, on marketplace there are people selling brand new for 1699, any issue with those sellers?

    • I think they imported those directly from China.

    • they offer 1 year warranty and no tax invoice

    • +7

On the back lip of the chair there are dots, like braille. 1 dot is size A, 2 dots size B etc

      • I'll test it if I go to work

    • +3

They're imported directly from China. In fact, all of these sellers are mainland Chinese when I visited their "inspection warehouse" AKA garage. Only consequence is 1 year warranty, unless you pay another $200 for HM 12 warranty. At that point, the difference in price is so small I'd rather purchase from LE.

      • Does imported from China mean it is still from the actual HM factory?

  • +2

WTF you're now paying for assembly?

  • +10

Aerons are $2000 on sale now? Yikes

  • +9

    Over-inflated RRP, minus 20% = "bargain"

  • -3

Alright, I am not going to say this time buy Mercedes seats for $100-200 from car wreckers.

    • +4

I've done this. Would not recommend

      • What was your experience? I’ve always imagined a converted car seat would be ideal as a desk chair since they’re comfortable to sit in for long periods.

    • +1

How to say you're single without saying you're single.

  • +5

Definitely worth every cent you pay for. It helped me with back issues that I was having. If you are 180cm tall and over 100kg go for size C

    • What if you’re 50kg & 160cm - size A?

      • Yes, unless your are 13 years old, and about to enter growth spurt :-)

  • +8

I find standing the best for me

  • -2

if you have a slipped disc, i wouldnt recommend getting this. my back was dying after 10 mins

    • -1

There's always going to be an adjustment period when you sit in an ergonomic chair. You need to give it more than 10 minutes before you write it off.

      • Nobody should listen to this advice.

If you have a slipped disc or other serious back issue then get advice from a physio.

You get 5 free sessions a year.

        • -1

Yes and advice from a physio may very well lead you back to the Aeron. They are ergonomic because of their considerations for back and lumbar support which people with back and spinal issues need. At the end of a day talking to a physio won't remove your need to sit in a chair.

          • -2

@TurtleTrooper: Yes but it may also lead you to something other than Aeron.

So get advice from an expert rather than someone on the internet.

            • +1

@threeseed: Yes and I never advocated against the advice of a physio. I simply said 10 minutes is too short a time to write off an ergonomic chair. You just went full straw man argument on me.

    • +1

Lol I think any chair would be bad after 10 min in that case. No matter what chair, any physio or someone with basic general knowledge will tell you to stand up regularly (and recommend a stand up desk as well to alternate your position).

    • How do you use it

  • +1

Sat in this, was amazing. Went down the road and bought an ergohuman though

  • +2

Any retailer we can try this?

    • just buy it and if you don't like it you can return it, no questions asked

      • Where does it say that?

        • +1

          hidden within the murky waters

  • -3

They better start producing chair for AI, as humans don't need these without a job

  • I paid $1800+ a few years ago from Living Edge and then paid ~$1100 delivered for the second one from CN Taobao.

    • +2

      Is Taobao one genuine?

      • Yes and no.

        Yes the product is genuine.

No, there is no serial number sticker so no local warranty. The seller (factory) will send you replacement parts if you need.

  • +1

I recently bought a second hand mint condition Herman Miller Mirra 1 with arms for $600 and a mint condition Steelcase Leap V2 for $650 off marketplace. I'd recommend checking out second hand first before buying brand new.
