      When in Rome. 😉

    Dam good prices

      *damn

Where the heck were these prices circa 5-10 years ago when I had no wife, kids or mortgage?

I heard Europe is really safe atm.

    • As safe/unsafe as any other continent. Weird comment.

      • +1

To be fair to Duram, DFAT is cautioning that travelers to a number of European countries "exercise a high degree of caution … due to the threat of terrorist attack."

I mean, without putting too fine a point on it, France is currently under a state of emergency due to terrorist attacks.

        • France != Italy

        • +1

@lainey13: I agree. But the comment referred to Europe. And obviously a lot of people, myself included, have used Rome as an entry/exit point to a European holiday.

    • +1

I'm there and can confirm it is safe.

    • Actually probably has something to do with these cheap tickets. I lolled (shamefully).

Dunno why all the down votes.

  • That's so bloody tempting…….

  • Great price, brother pickedbup similar deal into Paris out of rome last month. Not quite the best time of year weather wise but still worth a look.

  • Any comments on Budget Air? Prices are insanely cheap, just think they are a bit fishy though.

  • Anyone know if these fares can be upgraded to business using miles?

    • probably, would be alot of points to even get to business, you might be lucky to get the "buy business seats cheap email"

    • +1

Thats an absolute no. These fares fall under the Economy Deal fare bucket and are not upgradable, also you will only earn 25% of the full slate of miles for this fare bucket. To be able to upgrade with Etihad, you need at minimum Economy Saver fares, which for this route are roughly about $400 more, and will cost about 130k Etihad Guest Miles to upgrade 1 way from Australia to Europe.

      • Cool thanks - I've got about 800k points to get through and usually just get business or first class reward seats but thought this might be a good way to do it for less miles

        • WOW 800k Etihad Guest Miles!!!! Thats amazing, must do a hellalot flying on EY. With those kind of points Im sure you already know you can just purchase an entire Guest seat!!

        • @MelbBargainChaser77:

They're actually with Velocity and I've purchased a number of Business and First guest seats with Etihad in the past :) Those credit card sign ups and referrals are awesome - I just got another 180k for referring 3 friends to the Velocity Amex card

  • Why is Athens over double these prices?

  • Good prices TA. when you going there

  • So tempting - "interested" if/when Etihad flies ADL-AUH (direct/non-stop).

    • Weird I thought they were already flying out of ADL on a 787.

  • I was watching some youtube videos about travel scams (and pickpockets) and Italy/Rome was highlighted on some of them. I'm not saying don't go there, just be aware of these scams and enjoy your trip!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWyHJPK9ad0
My partner was scammed like this on her trip with her family and got charged iirc 400euro or about AU$800 back then for a basic meal for 5.

    • my in laws were robbed by the 'flat tyre' scam near Rome airport.
(they put things out to puncture your tyres, follow you, and "help" when you are changing the tyre (i.e. distract you whilst they fleece your car of your belongings).

  • Guys, I'm a noob on tour.

How do I plan my tour if I book this flight first? What if there are no tour available on those dates?

    • Depends on what you want to do, where you want to go, what really constitutes a 'tour'. Care to elaborate some of these?

If you are on the fence though, just book it and work out something around it. By having flights booked, you have definite start and end dates and you can focus your schedule / itinerary.

    • 90% of my holidays are booked by finding a cheap deal on a flight!

then the following 3-6 months is the fun part, planning where you want to go, what you want to see etc.

DirtyBoots raises an excellent question though - what tour are you talking about? are you trying to line up a contiki tour or something similar?

otherwise book your flights for as much time as you can stomach spending away from home (or can afford), and start shopping for hotels and looking at stuff to do!

if you want help just say so, let us know what your interests are, what things you'd really love to see (have you always wanted to see the leaning tower of pisa? or are you more interested in going to maranello and doing the ferrari factory tour?)

i freakin love scoping all that stuff out, so more than happy to offer advice on hotels and transport options (i just booked flights to singapore & ko samui last night, i'm going to have a ball!)

      • @DirtyBoots, @jaybo,

My wife and I never been to europe, and we just want to go there, probably prefer something like contiki, everything planned, budget 7000 (flight+tour+hotel). We only can go for 2 weeks.

So with this bargain ticket, should we buy the ticket first, and find a tour that works around that date? Or should we let it go and find a package and pay higher price later.

As noobs, we don't know what we want to see yet, I guess just the common stuff?

        • I've never actually been to Europe myself, but Rome is a big city with lots of stuff to see and do so getting a hotel in town and doing day trips out and about should be fine.

i imagine there's quite a few shorter trips, like 5-7 day tours of which could be good

contiki has a search engine, i presume other providers do
http://www.contiki.com/destinations/europe/tours/132-italian… <- 8 day tour starting in Rome and ending in either Venice or Rome.

most contiki tours tend to be closer to 2 weeks or longer, there's also plenty of "itinerary" guides on places like tripadvisor - https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g187791-i22-k234229… which will help you plan your own adventure.

the other good thing i've used in a few US cities is the hop-on-hop-off busses - https://www.rometoolkit.com/whattodo/rome_hop_on_tour_bus.ht… - if you find yourself in Rome for a few days, get some tickets, it's a good way to explore the city, jump off at a museum or somewhere for lunch, get back on the same bus. book a hotel that is on or near one of those lines :)

I've never booked a contiki tour myself, i'm not 100% sure if they always run to schedule (eg: if there aren't enough people who book on the same date etc as the tour you want to go on - do they cancel it? or just do it with a smaller bus?) so hopefully someone with more experience in that department can help you out. - but if they do (or at least have some guarantees or get travel insurance) then you can probably book it all in 1 hit today, book the plane tickets, book the contiki tour and off you go… i'd probably aim to arrive a day or two before your tour starts so you have time to de-jetlag and get your bearings (and also in case your flights get delayed!)

my wife and I tend to book everything ourselves, i'm more inclined to pour over pages and pages of train & plane timetables/routes and plan everything out (while still allowing enough slack time in between various points in case we get sidetracked or lost or just feel like an extra day in 1 spot cause we love it so much)

        • Tl;dr - get a longer travel window, book the flights now and organise tours around them, if you want the tourist experience / want to see a lot in a small time / are not confident in organising it yourself, go a tour.

Firstly, there's no right or wrong way to do these things. Sharing my experiences (I've only had a couple of trips to Europe, but have been quite a few other places), hopefully this helps:

          1) I'd 100% book the flights and work out the tour afterwards. It will help you narrow down the focus of what you want to / can achieve, and there are plenty of operators around.
          2) A two week window is really quite small. I'd do what you can to get more time there.
          3) Contiki (or some other guided tour) is a pretty low risk way to travel (as in, everything's handled for you- itinerary, accomodation etc.) If it's your first time travelling, or if you'd prefer not to have the stress of fending for yourself, this could be a great way to get a taste.
3a) Hopefully you'll end up on a tour with people that you get along with. You are kind of stuck with the group.
          4) If you do anything where you 'fit in 10 countries in 13 days' type thing, expect to be exhausted. You'll also get to see the tourist items, probably not much more behind the scenes.
          5) Don't book a flight from <somewhere in Eurpore> back to Rome on the same day that you fly home. If anything, land in Rome and head straight out, and use your last few days in Rome before flying home.

    • Personally I prefer to plan a trip myself rather than go on a tour. They are good if you are a solo traveler who wants to meet other people, but not so much if you are an introvert or interested in getting away from the tourist traps and doing your own thing on your own schedule rather than rushing through the sites. When you see these flight deals you really have to jump on them and then just figure out accommodation/itinerary afterwards. That can be a fun process in itself.

  • Great prices. Weather was still ok in Rome. 17-18 deg during the day, sometimes rain, some great sunny periods during late March/early April.

Just came back from Rome. It's a sh!thole….many arrogant people…subway was a nightmare…it's worse than some 3rd world country in Asia.
If you are joining tour and stay right in the city, you probably won't notice. But when you have to catch the subway (just few stops away from city), you will understand what it's like
I wouldn't go again even if it's free

    • +2

I was there in 2009 for a week whilst the garbos were on strike (or at least that's what I was told). Definitely not the cleanest city, and the public transport was a little shoddy, but definitely not nightmarish, and the people were all really nice.

    • +3

They are not arrogant, they are Italians

  • italy is the most beautiful country in the world, im jealous of every single one of you who takes this offer.

  • Do you think the flights around this price are only to Rome, or to other countries too? Also they stop in UAE. I thought I'd try to get a longer stopover than 2 hours (like a few days) but could seem to work out a way of adding a cheap / affordable stopover… Anh ideas?

    • Pretty sure with Etihad if you choose a stop over that is 24 hours or more in the UAE they will put you up into a hotel for the night at no extra cost, give you a free transfer via cab there and back. I dont think they advertise it, however if you call im sure they will probably confirm it for you.

Coming home from Europe this year our flights were delayed, missed our flight back and got in late to Dubai. They put us up in some 5 star hotel, gave us a free cab there and back and the driver even waited in the morning while we had our free buffet breakfast there in the morning.

      • That's just because your flights were delayed, no?

        • Whether they're delayed or originally booked for a 24+ hour stop over you should get the same treatment unless they've changed anything.

My mother has done a few trips to the UK and purposely books the longer stop overs in UAE just for the nice hotel and to break up the flights, shes never had an issue getting it. A simple phone call to Etihad should confirm it, if your still unsure ask them to send some paperwork or ask them where you can find it on their site.
