  • Nice price.

I'm placing my per-order in store on Thursday! then walking over to JB-hifi to grab some UHD 4k Bluray disk goodness :) its been a while but i can finally watch some 4k movies on my 4k LG 65" TV

NO WAY am i paying $400 for a stand alone UHD Bluray player when i can grab one of these then sell the games :)

      • Nice i dont have a 4k monitor or TV so no plans to buy this console. but I will be looking to buy the new xbox controller for my pc.

      • -4

Seems like you only want this for the 4k movie player.

you wont get much for the games, one of them is a download code so that's even harder get anything decent for. for a movie player only, a remote control is going to be easier than the controller.

also the interface of a movie player will be better than this is this has to cater for games.

so if you have no interest in gaming just get the $400 4k movie player

        • obviously he will probably play some games .. though he is probably an adult so gaming is probably not a priority

        • @ubcool:
:) i only play 4 hours a day of league of legends.. already have an xbox one and ps4 but no UHD player yet

    • +13

RRP. This is not a deal.

  • Does the S have any visual improvements over original?

    • -1

Microsoft has come out and said that games like Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon 3 will have nicer colours.
I'm guessing this is more to do with games like Halo 5 that drop resolution to keep framerate smoother, the new consoles will be buffed up so they dont need to do the drops

      • +8

Wouldn't the nicer colours and stuff be because of HDR? Or is HDR limited to video like the 4k resolution is?

        • -2

IDK how anyone can experience HDR when none of the TV's /Monitors support it yet..

        • +3

          @Ryxxi: Incorrect.

        • +2

          @Ryxxi:
My ~$1000 Samsung tv has HDR. It is a new model though.

        • @mrdavedave: http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2016/05/draft-hd-tv-2016-buying…

am not sure if you can buy a HDR for $1000 , they seem to start around $3k and there's no that many available. You might as well buy a CP when you have the $$ to spend on a 5-10k Tv.

        • +1

          @Ryxxi:

          CP?

        • @Ryxxi: can you help me understand what HDR is? I read a little in the wiki page and it seems to be some sort of colour feature. I am not so much interested in TVs but monitors.

Like should I buy an ISP monitor or would there be HDR monitors that will come out in the near future which are better than ISP.

        • +2

@Ryxxi: my samsung tv cost 1500 and says it has HDR and is a 4k tv soo idk?

        • +7

@x853: As a new 4K HDR TV owner let me explain. There's multiple old technologies being replaced/upgraded/improved.

          • The resolution from 1080p to 2060p (4k), of course.
          • The compression used in the video signal. It used to be 4:2:0. Now it will be 4:2:2 and 4:4:4. These introduce less visual artefacts = higher visual fidelity for all content, even old content, not that you'd notice it because it's so minor.
          • The colours going from 8 bit to 10 bit. All the old content (Blu-Ray) and video games are in 8-bit, so they need to add specific 10-bit support to look better.
          • But there's also the internal colour mapping. Currently one standard is used that has been around for 15/20 years and when technology moved on they could show you better gradiations of colour but not really colours "outside" what they already could. The new standard is called 2020 and basically results in a larger variety of colours and/or more vibrant colours.
          • And finally there's HDR which encodes light/dark information along with video, which is sent over the cable with a new protocol, which can be interpreted by the screen in order to give you more contrast in the signal. HDR requires 4K, 4:2:2, 10-bit colour, and 2020 gamut.

If you were buying anything you'd also make sure it supports HDMI 2 and HDCP 2.2 because those are going to be required for UHD Blu-Ray content. That's the long and short of it.

If you use a HTPC you're shit out of luck because you can use the 4K, 4:2:2, and 10-bit colour (all of which is glorious; if you want 3D though you'll need to do research as only LG is doing it this season). But there's no support of the 2020/HDR protocols yet and so nothing can trigger your TV to enter that mode. I believe it's a Windows 10 + Drivers + Apps problem so it's quite a while away.

Which is why an XBONE S is such a big deal because it's going to do everything in a very small and cheap package, though only UHD Blu-Ray will use it at first, HDR looks really amazing even on a non-OLED screen, and when it hits games it's going to be out of this world.

        • +1

@DoctorOwl: Thank you for helping me understand the new tech.

So from what you are saying this technology is really for TVs as it seems to me thr highend monitors already seem to do that.

Ok that is good to know - as I am in the market for a monitor and didn't want to buy now only to be stuck with outdated tech.

        • +1

@x853: Monitors do the 4k, compression, and colours. They don't do the 2020 gamut and HDR but neither do games yet. So if you're not using it to watch UHD Blu-Ray then you're all good.

I use my 4K HDR TV for gaming but it's going to be a good few years before a game comes out for it.

        • @DoctorOwl: thanks again for the reply.

Honestly I am suptised that the colour in HDR is better than IPS. i mean I have seen monitors like the x34 that are 30 colour bit and greater

For example the x34 has 1.07 Billion Colours which is true 30 bit colour.

Honestly I think I have misunderstood something - as you seem to keep referring to HD blu-rays.

I will watch some youtube clips on it to get myself up to scratch.

          Thanks for your comments though

      • Experience richer, more luminous colours in games like Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon 3. With a higher contrast ratio between lights and darks, High Dynamic Range technology brings out the true visual depth of your game

      • Derp.

    • its 40% smaller

im wondering if they hired the marketing and design team from apple for this?

      • +2

Why do you think they need to hire Marketing and design team from Apple? It is because its WHITE?

        • +8

Never mind the fact that the 360 started out in white too.

        • +2

I my gosh HandsomeMonkey, you can just ask a console why it's white…

        • i was more referring to the "S" moniker

    • +3

The improvements mostly come (as far as games are concerned) from allowing games to make use of HDR, which allows for a wider use of colours, but it does require you to have a 4K HDR TV in order to enjoy these benefits (don't think there's any 1080p HDR or if that even makes sense), so that's about it. Games will also be upscaled to 4K if you have a 4K TV, but I'd not call that a "benefit" as the game is still being rendered at the native resolution.

Non-games related, it does come with the ability to play 4K Blu-ray discs (HDR compatible too).

      • +4

You will need a HDR10 4k TV since there's 2 different HDR and Xbox One S is only compatible with HDR10.

        • HDR10 is the standard, so all TVs that support DV would also support HDR10, happy to be proven wrong though

      • +1

Games will also be upscaled to 4K if you have a 4K TV,

Do you have any source for this one? I've only ever seen talk of bluray being 4K, nothing at all mentioned about games or upscaling.

    • +12

it plays 4k Bluerays.. that in itself is worth the cost!

      • +1

True. Good point since the cheapest 4K blu ray player is about the same price.

        • +7

I'm getting flashbacks to blu ray's launch and the ps3

        • +5

          @Agret:
          Also DVD with the ps2

        • +3

          @Agret:

bluray players were cheaper then the PS3 ..not the case this time around

        • @mrdavedave:

          And VCD's with the PS1

        • +1

@vid_ghost: But weren't the cheaper Bluray players worse than the PS3? It was rated the second best BluRay player money could buy at one stage, and it was cheaper than some of th players that it beat.

The #1 ranked one was very, very expensive.

I'd need to find some sources to back this up, but it shocked me no end at the time.

        • @vid_ghost: some were cheaper yes but the cheap ones at the time were very very slow and lacked support for the constantly evolving standards at the time. The ps3 was the best value player because it kept getting the new features in firmware updates and it was considered one of the fastest blu ray players at the time (very slow by today's standards though)

  • +2

Good price. Although this seems to be the standard pricing for the one s 500gb. Might become cheaper through other retailers closer to release.

  • +1

And here I thought it was only going to be 1TB+

    Learn something new every day!

Good deal, but I can see digital downloads getting more and more popular, and while you can always plug in an external HDD, probably best to try to get at least a 1TB model (imo)

    • +1

I think better value to buy the 500gb model and a 2tb Seagate backup plus slim.

      • I think best value is wait till Christmas, but that's just me :)

It's not like this is a new generation, it's just better.

        • Yeah buying a clearance deal of the original model is best value unless you have a 4K display and can't wait to get into 4K movies.

  • +5

Does it run games in 4k?
    No, it doesn't.

      • +9

        isn't that XBox Scorpio?

        • you noobs dont read.. both the s and the scorpio can do 4k

          http://www.techradar.com/au/news/gaming/microsoft-says-its-x…

        • @soulmind23:

4K gaming means it's rendering at 4K. In non-technical terms, that means everything in the scene is more detailed, sharper.

The S upscales to 4K. That means it's still rendering at 1080p, but it just fuzzes the pixels a bit to pretend to look more detailed. Some say this acutally makes it look slightly better than 1080p, some disagree.

So no, the S does not do 4k gaming, and whether Scorpio will or not is a big question mark.

For actual 4K, you need a very solid GPU. At the moment a gaming PC that can do 4K in most games starts at well over $1000 (and it's only that cheap because of the very latest GPUs that came out in the last month or so).

So whether the Scorpio will manage even 30 FPS at 4k, let alone 60 FPS, in visually complex games is still unknown.

      • +3

Upscaled, like how the original xbox one up-scales 900p game to 1080p.

        • +3

          and 720P games to 1080P

        • Got a proof for this? I've seen nothing, curious.

        • +3

          @StickMan:
"HDR visuals for supported games and video, 4K video support for Blu-rays, apps and movies, and 4K upscaling for games"

"In terms of hardware specs, while there is additional processing power, the Xbox One S won't give games a performance boost. Instead, the extra oomph is restricted to HDR support and 4K up-scaling of standard HD images."

          http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-06-27-xbox-one-s-deta…

        • @rowdywabbid: Cheers, yeah I found some additional info after. Not bad.

      • +8

While it may output 4k, the rendering resolution for graphically demanding games is certainly not going to be 4k. The output will be rendered at 1080 (or lower probably) and upscaled to 4k only.

The project Scorpio xbox might come closer and 4k rendering might be the target, but it takes some serious hardware to achieve that, and no specifications have been made public yet. Even the latest PC graphics cards are pushed to their limit to render 4k.

        • I think Microsoft's aim is to employ a hybrid resolution render surface like they used in Halo 5 where the resolution will scale up and down dynamically based on frame rate. This means it will support "up to 4k" resolution so in low demand scenes you may reach 4k.

    • lol at the negg you noobs should learn how to read

      http://www.techradar.com/au/news/gaming/microsoft-says-its-x…

  • Is it a good media player? Or similar to PS4?

    • Depends if they've fixed the DTS issue - IE no support!

    • +2

atleast it will be the best 4k player on the market when it releases.

    • +1

      simular to a PS4

    • +3

I use X1 as a media player with Plex. Only console to see 5Ghz on WiFi.

There's issues with DTS playback though, which I haven't bothered to work out yet, but love using it to stream.

      • AFAIK DTS with Plex->XB1 is not supported. It transcodes to AAC.

        • Yep, that's right, but for some reason it won't play the file to transcode, so not sure what's going on there.

      • +1

Do you use the HDMI or Optical out for audio ?

I have my XBOX one output set as 5.1 Uncompressed Audio VIA HDMI as its Lossless.

I would have thought unless its HD that Dolby Digital or DTS would be a lossy format anyway.

My receiver always says PCM instead of Dolby Digital or DTS even when I play a bluray
but my DTS encoded files play fine.

PS I am using PLEX also

        • +1

          I use HDMI.

I'm pretty sure I have it as 5.1 Uncompressed in settings.

I'll check when home to see what my amp says.

When I did try to play a DTS encode via Plex, Plex just returned an error. I'll revisit it to report back.

  • +17

Why is this a deal? Isn't this the standard launch price + bundle? I don't think you can get it without those games. I imagine other stores will be the same price, if not cheaper or with additional games once the launch date arrives.

    https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msaus/en_AU/pdp/Xbox-On…

    • +4

Exactly, this is just the launch price, not a bargain.

    • +8

Inappropriate use of negative vote - Are you serious mods? Its not a bargain for the exact reason Smigit has posted above. Do you want me to post the exact same thing as Smigit has?

    • +4

      RRP is totally a deal

      • +1

I know… They could do the 20% off ebay tech sale trick. Up the price 20% then create a 20% off sale! That would totally make it a deal.

  • +2

    Awaiting price drop to $299.

  • +1
  • +7

CashRewards are offering a further 3% extra discount for the Microsoft store. Bringing it down to $387.03 - not a lot, but this is OzBargan.

  • +1

Now just have to try to sell my Xbox one…

  • +2

Just a reminder that this is the new X1 revision that allows for 4K blu-ray playback, it doesn't have anything to do with 4K quality gaming at all, other than that you can play a video stream from the console through to your TV, of someone doing 4k gaming on a PC. This revision of the console will still play all games at the same FPS and resolution as the standard X1 model. They have simply added in the ability to enable some games to display a few extra colours than normal.

I wouldn't want someone in here blowing a huge chunk of coin on a new console, thinking they are getting something that can actually do 4K gaming.

    • +1

Correct. Bear in mind that project Scorpio is due our next year which, rumour has it, is meant to do 4K gaming, etc.

Did someone mention that the S is 40% smaller, white and has an integrated power unit?

      40 goddamn percent, mofos!

See you at the Scorpio launch maybe.

      • +1

I have doubts Scorpio can do 4K. It's likely going to be upscaled, even though MS calls it True 4K. Much more expensive hardware will struggle at that resolution.

        • +2

Remember that the original xbox one hardware is extremely outdated by modern PC standards, and we are only talking about pushing 30fps and not even advanced AA or AF methods either. So starting from such a low base and quadrupling the graphic processing isn't as big a deal. It's doable with AMDs current processors, heck my r290 can do 4K in older PC titles. Still, Scorpio is not going to look as great as a high end gaming PC but it should eliminate a lot of the shimmering in xbox one games.

      • Well, rumour has it Jesus and Aliens are both coming soon too, but I aint putting any money on that happening either :)

        • Did rumour say when?

        • @lostn: Cheap Tuesday, Ozbargain style.

  • What's the trade in for the original xbone 500gb at eb games these days? I expect nothing and I'm sure eb will still disappoint me.

    • Call them

      Someone traded a 1TB Halo XB1 for $219…

      • +1

Me lol reason ( dont want to deal with people on gumtree and ebay has been selling them around 300 anyway)

      • +1

I also called them and they said 170 at first….. so take it in is the best bet.

        • +2

I'm not sure but it might scale a bit depending on your EB World level, right? I'm not sure if the bonus trade credit applies to hardware or not, but couldn't see where it says it doesn't.

    • +1

You could also try out CEX if they are in your area. Here is a link to there current buying prices for Xbox One.

      https://au.webuy.com/search/index.php?stext=xbox+one&section…

      • wish there was one of these on the central coast! I would of sold my 500gb ps4 boxed for that price anyday.

        • +2

Just had a look in the help section and they have a post it to us section for free. Whether this would include consoles it would be no harm in asking them.
I have sold quite a few games , phones and an ipad in store as long as its in resell condition. I have had disks with scratches on which were refused.
For me, they always gave me the better price compared to others. But you will always get the best price if you sell it yourself. :)
On all occasions they gave me cash on the spot except ipad which was paid into my bank account a couple of days later.

      • +1

        umm what is this??

        • +1

CEX ?? It is a buy / sell / exchange store.

    • About three fiddy

  • Not a deal, especially since it only has a 500GB hard drive, 5 games later you're gonna need more space.
