This is half the normal new price. Good deal IMO.

Can vouch for Asus refurbished stock. Great stuff, full warranty, and LOCAL SERVICE CENTER (in Perth, WA).

I would love to use this with the previous $200 ANZ Cashback offer!

    • So the overall cosmetics are good (at least in your case)? Wonder if they have a dead pixel guarantee also.

      • +1

My previous refurbished ASUS purchase included following dead pixel information in refurbished products limited warranty document:
The TFT will be considered defective only when there are at least:
        a) over 3 bright dots OR 5 dark dots OR 8 bright and/or dark dots in total: or
        b) 2 adjacent bright dots OR 2 adjacent dark dots: or
        c) 3 bright and/or dark dots within an area 15mm in diameter

  • Very confused with all the model numbers - wouldn't mind picking up one of the 13.3" models, ideally with upgradeable ram past 8gb and also upgradeable SSD. Gotta do some research. Can anyone recommend a particular model from this site? Prices look cheap!

  • Asus and their laptops all seem to have code like name

but this is a banger of a deal for the spec

  • Can anyone tell me what does m3-6y30 mean?

    • +3

      It's the processor.

It's a mobile processor, so it's fanless, runs cool, and isn't exactly fast. This ain't a gaming laptop.

      Good for browsing or whatever.

      • Thanks

The "Core M3" are the minimum performance processors I would look for in a Windows system.
Anything weaker, and you're back down to Atom processors.
Even the newest 14nm flagship Atom X7 isn't powerful enough for proper computing.
(Just for reference the most powerful Atom, its only as fast as a Nexus 6)

For some people the Core M3 is good, but they want more performance,
at which point you'll have to upgrade to a Core i7-15W chip, or a Core i5-28W chip.

Going further, you hit the thermal limits, and generally need a desktop variant.

  • What are the return options if we are unhappy with the condition??

I'm sure it'd be fine but i've read some horror stories about JB-Hifi's "Refurbished" cameras…

Will this configuration be good (enough) for .NET development machine (Visual Studio, IIS Express, etc)?

Also you might have heard about the soon to be released Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air: http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Original-Xiaomi-Laptop---Silv…

Very interesting device. I was a bit unsure about the processor but this ASUS seems to come with the same processor? Is it comparable more to i3 or i5?

    • +2

Its essentially a much lower power Core i3/i5 processor. A Core i5 would burst at about 2.7 Ghz and run sustained at around 2.5 Ghz. This Core m3 would burst at 2.2 Ghz and generally run sustained at about 1.8 Ghz.

It means it uses a lot less power.. uses less "cooling" equipment. Laptop manufacturers generally also pack less battery.. The laptop ends up usually a bit lighter overall.

    • +1

apparently the m3 can sustain speeds despite not actively cooled by fans. i5 n i7 ultrabooks have issues with throttling down during sustained CPU loads and this is despite being actively cooled.

meaning m3 might be better overall? in a fan less ultra book.

      • +1

It really depends on the build of the laptop.

You would expect that when you pay premium prices for a Core i5 ultrabook, they would put in premium cooling equipment that would let it run pretty much full speed sustained without throttling (though a tablet style Core i5/i7 would generally still throttle).

      • +2

It's really a crapshoot unless you can find specific experience with the device in question because saying "these mobile cpus are throttled" and "these mobile cpus are not" is incorrect: there are myriads of ways of throttling Intel mobil processors including temp readings from sensors, time at X CPU utilisation, time at power draw X etc and it is up to the device maker to implement the throttling regime they desire.

What you can say generally speaking with these CPUs is they will give good burst performance which means they're good at Office, web browsing, casual games, email. But with tasks that take sustained performance such as 3D games, compression, Photoshop rendering etc they hit the design limits as the device maker implements throttling.

This is why you can "mitigate" throttling on certain devices but not others by various things like software such as Throttlestop (check your device) or cooling the case (Surface Pro 3/4) and why some devices have much better performance than others in the intel mobile CPU … ecosystem.

    • That Mi Notebook air certainly looks very interesting. I like how it has dual SSD slots for expansion, shame that it does not look like it will allow for RAM upgrades. Having had a look at some benchmarks for the M6Y30 it looks like it is sufficient for most things as long as it is not highly graphics orientated. It may be underpowered for your needs though

      • +1

Indeed it does - especially the discrete GPU option :)

Let's hope they ship or sell it here.

        • I'm sure it'll be available on aliexpress or the like soon, but warranty is a big issue for me

        • @maolin95: Warranty will always be an issue, but with laptops etc if they go bad the issues do rear up quickly.

        • I'm more interested in the 12", not needing a high powered unit, mainly for emails and docs on the go. The small size/weight and long battery life are huge +'s for me.

The big factor would be the SSD upgrade process….if I can just do it then I would be sold, if it is factory upgrade only as some places report then I would be very reluctant until someone reveals the SSD upgrade process.

Anyone bought from this website before?

Noticed this Transformer Book seemed like a pretty good deal as well for $600

    • looks a good deal, though might be stuck at windows 8.1 since the free Win 10 upgrade expires soon

      • Says win10 in description. Maybe the rep can clarify?

      • +1

Expires tonight. So if you have been putting it off then you only have about 9 hours left :)
Its about a 2 gig download.

        • +1

Yep but my understanding is these are fairly new machines that would probably have win10 from the get go. Again, maybe the rep can clarify if it is already installed.

    • I got a refurbished ASUS from them before. Excellent condition. Delivered fast.

  • What kind of screen? TN? VA? IPS?

  • Anyone tried to turn this into a Hackintosh?

I need a cheap laptop to write Swift on.

  • Out of stock? I can't seem to progress further than checkout:(

  • +2

yeah, says out of stock, at that price QHD, and touch screen means glass for easy cleaning was truely a bargain.

always a challenge with refurb stock in that its limited qty, like dell monitors.

  • OP how much stock did you allocate and is there going to be more?

    • Hopefully more comes soon, am keen

  • Any of the other models compelling buys?

    • The X302LA at 589 ticks a few boxes for me

      • 13" screen
      • i5-5200
      • 4Gb RAM
      • 128Gb SSD
      • can't tell screen res but almost certainly HD not full HD

      Good connectivity and reasonable portability…

      • Looks like 1366 x 768 screen res. Not touchscreen.

  • Is this Laptop like this one or not, didnt get?

i think it's a great deal, though might be stuck at windows 8.1 since the free Win 10 upgrade expires soon and it's a true
