  • That's a pretty good deal, so tempted!
Too bad Officeworks don't stock this model or we could get it for 5% less.
Only thing I don't like about these drives is they require an external power adaptor. My current external drive has power builtin and only requires a kettle power cord.
Also with USB3.0 out now, it's kinda old tech.
But still a great bargain so +1 from me.

    • +2

Yeah old tech but still cheap and abundant. How many computers have you seen in households that have USB3.0? How many cheap USB3.0 devices are out there? Just like 3D TV it won't take off untill at least half a year.
I'm just saying don't get caught up in the hype there's still some time before USB3.0 matures and becomes part of everyday life like USB2.0 has.

      • +1

I would agree but in my case I just bought a new laptop with USB3.0 in it so I would prefer to get an USB3.0 drive, but as you said, they're not widely available yet and being an early adopter means paying for the privilege. And being a cheap skate I will probably just get this :)

      • +6

3D TV will never take off, it's the biggest load of gimmick in the history of gimmick. :D

Lets buy a stupidly expensive 3D TV so we can watch a hand full of titles and wear stupid looking glasses. Goodie!

        • +2

"3D TV will never take off,"

You'll probably regret the comment in a few years time. With more 3D files coming out it will certainly be a big market in the future.

        • +3

it will when they somehow come up with 3d television without the need for glasses. IMO that's the only thing holding back this so called "gimick"

          • @Trance N Dance: Don't forget there are models out there which convert the 2D to 3D anyway, it worked pretty good about a month ago prior to Samsungs release, with a few glitches.. Dunno if it's close to perfect now but if so would make it much more worth it..

          • @Trance N Dance: I never really understood this hype about the 3D TVs that require glasses. 3D TVs that require NO GLASSES have been around for quite a while actually. And they were great. I remember seeing one in display back in 2007. And then there was a nice one at the George Street Cinema Complex in Sydney, owned by the underground Internet Cafe. It's probably still there.

Why are we going back to glasses now? I don't get it.

            • +1

@Strange: I saw these TVs on demo at Harrod's in London late last year. Sure, they give a nice 3D effect without glasses, but it's like watching a lenticular print. If you move your head even slightly the whole 3D effect moves across the picture in waves. You have to sit at the correct distance from the screen to see the entire picture in 3D, otherwise part of the image is distorted.

Unless there is only 1 person watching a glass-less 3D screen, the glasses technology gives a superior picture.

              • +1

@Cluster: The headache and the eye damage to young eyes is what i like best about 3d technology with glasses.

  • save $10? am I missing something here? How is the price too good to show?

  • $138 was already on special. $128 is a very good price. Cheapest 1.5TB 3.5" drive on staticice is $112 and that's without an enclosure.
I just purchased one, with the AUD crashing prices are bound to drop too sooner or later.

    • +2

      you mean pirces would increase?

      • my bad, yes I meant prices will increase soon.

  • i bought similar hdd at big w early of this year for $142.5. With price only 128 now, this is really a bargain

  • I just pick one up, I need some extra space for the iMac. Thanks

  • How come DS's Q&A says 1 year warranty? My recently purchased 1TB Elements has 3 years.

  • I don't get paid until Thursday. I really could've done with a couple of these. :(

    • +6

i hope you dont have a big cc debt. i think people who dont have small change accessible all the time should urgently work on their financial planning. its never too young to start!

      • +3

Your seriously lecturing someone on here? No one is perfect, he may not have change for a number of reasons…

        • +4

Well somebody's gotta start somewhere about fixing the financial situation of Australia.

          • @Trance N Dance: While it is true that personal debt is a huge issue in Australia, modtang may have his funds tied up in investments and have only allocated himself a few hundred $ every payday.

            • @WaywardOne: that was what i thought to be best-case scenario. but then it raise the question of why he couldn't use CC for the purchase and pay off at the next pay day? what about the idea of keeping some funds in a netbank acct that pays reasonable interest, while being immediately accessible in case of "emergency"

              • +2

@kimmik: forget it. fiat currency is going to tank, globally. best buy gold.

                • @mr_asstight: Haha spoken like a true asian (ie three-quarters my extended family). IIRC there was a time when gold was really high then halved in price in a few years, so be careful it's not foolproof.

                  • +1

@Trance N Dance: it's true man, money is just paper, gold will always have value…what do you think the currency would be after a nuclear war? It ain't gonna be your Visa/cash/travellers cheques.

                    • @Jaxx: Depending on what country got nuked, and actually currency is what gives gold it's value. Gold is traded to an equivalent amount in currency. Currency will always be around, anything of value is too precious and few to use as currency.

                    • @Jaxx: Bottlecaps.

        • reasons more important than his need for more storage lol

  • Went to Domanyne and they price matched it, I even got showed that it was under cost price for them. So great deal!

    • Are you serious under cost price? That can't be right

      • it was most like under there invoice cost but they make profit out of trading terms with suppliers

  • Just double check. Can i buy from the shop directly?
if I can, do I need to print it and prove it to them or do they have internet access?

    • I called one up and they wouldn't do it…said web store has less overheads yadada…it's free shipping anyway

      • Yeah but I would like to use my voucher so need to pay again.
Also close to dick smith. I will check it tomorrow.

Yes, it is under cost because I tried to buy last week for $130 but the manager didn't give me the best price is $145. I told him might as well get from office work higher model for $149 but I can wait.
HDD will go down normally but not sure if the AUS$ is down now whether or not the import price will go up.

Edit: I think this wd element is better than my book essential in term of space. I think my book essential take more space because of the build in backup software but I could be wrong that is why I prefer this wd element.

  • Why does this require an AC adapter? Can't it charge itself through the USB?

    • no. something to do with the physical size of the hdd I gather.

do you honestly expect a 1.5TB to be usb powered? I thought that 750gb was pushing it

      • +1

It's not how much the drive can store, but the actually physical size of the drive. The platters on the the 3.5" drives are much bigger and can be potentionally be more in number than the one's in the 2.5" drives therefore the power required by the drive is much more than the 5 or so watts provided by a usb port.

    • +1

There's nothing to charge…and no, it's a 3.5" drive which is too large to power using USB, only 2.5" drives can do that.

  • I purchased the 2TB version of this HDD a few weeks ago. It was approx 3c more per GB than this one is now. It is a rock solid drive, that has replaced the rubbish 2TB Seagate Desktop Freeagent, which has all but died on me.

    • 3c more per GB? That would be around $230
Now all Dick Smith have the 2TB model for $199
      :)

      • Yeah it was around that. It was the cheapest price in VIC according to Staticice (taking in to account the proximity of the shops to my location). Time was also a factor for me, as I had to get a new HDD ASAP, to backup my data from the dying Seagate POS.

Also, can anyone confirm whether you can pick up online orders? The website says nothing about this.

        • Says it is an ONLINE EXCLUSIVE, I would say no pick up available, doesn't hurt to ask the store though if you are going to one.

  • +3

Spoke to them and no pick up is available and DS stores won't price match.

If you know any Woollies staff, you'll get it for $121.60! My staff discount automatically worked when I put in in the shopping basket, nice!
And the free shipping just makes it even better.

    • +2

how about u post your staff number, so we can share the discount that you get? :)

      • +3

Hah, hah, yeah and I won't be a Woollies staff member for much longer. :-p

        • +2

do it for the love of OzBargains!

  • at hornsby DS in westfield had this hard drive for 128 in store.

  • I prefer and bought 1.5TB WD Essential from officeworks with $149. For extra $21 you get better ventilation and design, comes with power off button, backup software and longer warranty.

  • -3

Dodgy ultra low end. How would you like to entrust a mammoth 1.5TB of precious data on a drive only offering 1yr warranty??? Consider 3-5yrs are available on other drives.

    • warranty is not really relevant when it comes to data…..once it's gone, it's gone……warranty just means you get a longer time for repair/replacement of the unit…..

    • +1

Provide some examples of other 1.5TB drives with 3-5 yr warranties (and include prices) thanks.
