AmEx Platinum Card 100,000 Bonus Points + Lounge Access + $300 Travel Credit ($1200 Fee PA)

180

Get 100,000 bonus points when you sign up using either the standard or via a referral link for the AMEX Platinum Card by 30 January 2017. You'll need to spend $1,500 in your first 3 months of Card Membership.

Note: The Platinum Card is a charge card as opposed to a credit card, so it doesn’t have a pre-set spending limit (rather, you are obligated to pay the balance off in full each month). You’ll need to report a hi income of $100,000 per annum, and the card comes with a hefty annual fee of $1,200. However, if you plan to travel frequently (and you like doing so in style!) you can extract a huge amount of value from this card.

In addition to the 100,000 bonus points (which credit to the AMEX Membership Rewards Ascent Premium scheme and can be converted to partners such as Qantas, Velocity, Emirates, Krisflyer and Asia Miles on a 1:1 basis), there are numerous benefits of this card which more than offset the annual fee.

Key benefits:

  • Airport lounge access (800 lounges in over 100 countries) – these include Australian domestic Virgin lounges, an extensive network of AMEX lounges (including the well-reviewed AMEX Sydney International lounge), Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Delta Skyclub lounges.
  • An annual $300 travel credit to spend through Amex’s travel site - redeem for pre-paid airfares, car hire or combine with the bonuses provided for AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts (next point down) to really maximise value.
  • Access to AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts service (basically this provides a whole lot of bonus offers for luxury hotels around the world if you book via AMEX travel). Bonus inclusions tend to include a 12 PM early checkin, 4 PM late check out, breakfast, $100 USD/85 Euro hotel credit (use for restaurant, spa credit etc), a one category room upgrade and more.
  • Elite Loyalty status for Starwood Preferred Guest, Club Carlson, Shangri-La Golden Circle, and Hilton HHonors.
  • Free Platinum Reserve credit card (on request). This additional card provides a free return domestic or trans-tasman flight, or a night in a luxury hotel. (Benefit is not currently advertised - in order to obtain the card, you’ll need to request it from card member services after you activate your main card).
  • Comprehensive insurances, including Loss Damage Waiver Cover for car rental of up to a max of $125,000 AUD (this is the only card I’m aware of that offers this insurance – I take great satisfaction in declining the dreaded daily rental car excess fee when I book car rental with my Platinum Card!)
  • Fast track lane access at Sydney Airport’s outgoing immigration and passport control (just flash your credit card and boarding pass at the dedicated Express Path entrance to get waived through)
  • Up to four supplementary cards free of charge (supplementary card holders can then take advantage of a number of the benefits mentioned above)

Here are my picks for three top ways you could use your 100,000 AMEX Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points:

  • Option 1: Transfer your points 1:1 to Singapore Airlines Krisflyer and fly Sydney – Singapore – London (or Zurich) on the Singapore Airlines A380 in business class (80,675 points, plus taxes).
  • Option 2: Transfer your points 1:0.5 to SPG (starwood). This scheme is considered by many to be the most valuable out there. 50,000 points will net you up to a fortnight of accommodation at Category 1 or 2 properties (my personal favourite: http://www.lemeridienangkor.com/ - Category 2)
  • Option 3: Transfer 80,000 points to Asia Miles (Cathay Pacific at a 1:1 basis). This will get you a return flight from Sydney to Hong Kong on Cathay’s excellent business class (with only around $120 in taxes). Save the remaining 20,000 points for a rainy day (or a small transfer to Starwood).

for $1200 you'd be hard pressed to try to get value out of it….
So not really sure if it is really a deal or not.

    • +3

For 120,000 points, you can fly Sydney - Singapore - London on the Singapore Airlines A380 first class suites (that flight costs $8625.00 when booked online) so the points can more than make up for the annual fee if you use them wisely. Then add in the $300 credit, potential for free flight, annual lounge access and many other benefits. People who can make the most of premium travel can definitely get value from it :)

      • +5

Amex Velocity Platinum has 100k points sign-up and annual fee of $349 - far better value if you are chasing points.

This deal is below average for anyone who won't use the lounge access.

        • I noticed that the new referral for the platinum is now a 2k spend rather than $500, big increase!

        • Why not get both :)

The beauty of the Platinum Charge is that your points are Membership Reward Ascent Premium - they transfer to numerous airline and hotel partners (such as Krisflyer and SPG (starpoints)). Whereas with Velocity, you're restricted to redeeming Velocity options. Yes, you can access some Singapore Airlines flights (limited business and economy redemptions only), or choose to convert your Velocity mils 1.35 to 1 for Krisflyer), but it is much more limited.

        • +2

          @The Champagne Mile:

          Why not get both :)

Because my 4 Amex slots are already full :)

Any new card I sign up for means I need to cancel an old card. I would choose to reapply for the Velocity Platinum card

        • Can I have a link to this deal please?

        • +1

I dont think 100k velocity points getd you the same value on singapore airlines, as SQ miles are worth more than velocity points

      • Flying first class to London would be complementary lounge access in SQ 1st class lounge, so no need to slum it in AMEX lounge

        • Indeed, actually I think it is 'The Private Room'. Looking forward to trying it one day :)

        • @The Champagne Mile:
been there a few times not bad

        • @The Champagne Mile:

Yeah - I went there with the velocity points. Nice food and drink, but beyond that nothing special.

      • First post or reply here so please be kind. Where can you find Sydney-London in first class for 120000 points. I thought that that amount of points equates to about $1200 of travel via webjet or Helloworld.

        • +3

Transfer the 120000 points to Krisflyer (Singapore Airlines - KF Miles).

First Class Reward Saver = 132,500 KF Miles.
less 15% discount on booking online brings it down to 112,625 KF Miles.

Booked ZUR-SIN-MEL in 1st class suites on Singapore A380's for January at that rate. Looking forward to it!

        • +1

@tizey: Enjoy, Tizey. Will let you know when I post a blog update on Krisflyer around the world redemption option.

        • @tizey: But the one way going out can often be more than a return economy flight, rarely much less. Anywhere you can book a mixed class return flight with Amex (or converted points)? Like the old airlines.sg site?

        • @tunzafun001:

Not that I'm aware of. I have business MEL-SIN-ZUR on the way there (no award saver fares to get there), and couldnt combine them no matter how much I spoke with SIA.

    • like op said 'you like doing so in style!' that money is nothing for some. they think style/status is more important than the real themselves.

    • +3

At $1200, it's hard to highlight the value this card offers especially on a site like Ozbargain.

I think this is a really good card, but only for specific types of people.

As a rough estimate, I'd say to really be able to get reasonable value out of this card, you should probably satisfy the following criteria:

      • Fly at least 4 times a year (internationally)
      • Have an appetite for staying in 4 star hotels or better (as opposed to someone like me who is happy staying in a 2 star hotel to save money)
      • Often eat out (3pts/$ AMEX Membership Rewards points is awesome)
      • Able to use/sell the free flight (the free flight is provided by the companion to this card - Platinum Reserve, and includes some international destinations such as SYD-ZQN Queenstown - this flight in itself is arguably worth $500-700)
      • Frequently make high value transactions - I say this because of the fact that it's a charge card and not a credit card - i.e. no "credit limit"

      Other points:

      • It includes unlimited lounge access to: Sydney International AMEX Lounge, Virgin Australia, Delta Sky Club, PriorityPass lounges, and Plaza Premium Lounges. This unlimited lounge access is quite valuable in itself. Some people deliberately fly to accrue status credits to ensure they maintain a certain level of status in order maintain lounge access benefits (in addition to other perks)
      • The lounge access I believe can be extended to a companion, including if they are holding a supplementary card under the same account
      • Express Lane is a pretty sweet perk
      • One of the few programs with the ability to transfer points to Qantas Frequent Flyer (however - arguably not that valuable, given the options at your disposal)
      • There is an earn rate cap of 300k points per year

The other perks of the card are not so exclusive to this card, and so are maybe not so relevant in increasing the value of this card.

I agree from a pure bonus points point of view it's not the best deal out there. The 100k Velocity Points one is likely better. However, if you are someone that satisfies a lot of the criteria above, I think this card is a real gem.

This card is not for me by any means, but I absolutely acknowledge that this card, even at $1200, can offer awesome value.

In terms of OP trying to get referrals, I don't see an issue. If he didn't post it, someone else may have (would have, even?) and someone else would be accused of trying to prop up their referrals. Either that, or no one would've posted it and some of us may not have been made aware of this deal.

Besides, it's a win-win. You get more points if you apply, and OP gets some points bonuses. If you don't like OP, then don't use his referral… or use someone else's, or just apply with no referral and accept less points.

      • -1

If anyone should get credit for the deal then it should be the first person that posted the deal. Have a look at the frequent flyer website where people keep reposting deals (copy and pasting = no effort). Pages upon repetitive pages of people touting for referral points! It is a Disgrace !! Motives on Ozbargain should be more ultruistic than that!!

  • +3

this is a fairly standard deal for this card

    • +3

The OP has a history of posting deals that are not really deals simply to farm referral bonuses for him/herself.

      • Hi Vetopower. I've posted 44 deals, of which a total of 2 have been for American Express issued cards with my referral link. I note that you've been a member for over a year, yet have contributed 0 deal posts to date - might be time to consider one?

  • +1

In addition to the benefits listed, you can add roadside assistance to it provided your car is <8years old.

For me, the value comes from:

    $1200 annual fee
    less: $300 travel credit
    less: $350 platinum reserve flight
    less: $200 roadside assistance

Equals annual fee of $350, for 120,000 MR Points.

Probably wont renew it, but $350 for 120,000 MR Points is pretty handy.

    • +1

I think you are overvaluing the 'value' of your inclusions.

      • $300 travel credit can only be used with an overpriced travel agent. Check on Expedia and the same places go for half the price
      • $350 platinum reserve flight - fair enough valuation assuming you use it for east coast to Perth / NZ
      • $200 roadside assistance - NRMA is $90/year, Allianz $80/year and there are regular deals for $50-$60 per year for these services.
      • +5

$300 travel credit is usable via Amex Travel. The flights I'm going to book it on (intra-europe) are identical in price between Amex Travel & Alitalia direct and Expedia.. so you're argument is flawed.

$200 roadside assistance - $200 with RACV covers both my fiances car (nominated on policy), and me as a member regardless of car I drive. Comparing apples with apples, 2x$90 = $180, so I'll accept a lower valuation on this of $180.

        • Sorry, my bad. Your valuations are good.

        • +8

"both my fiances" …well played sir

      • To be honest, I haven't noticed a difference in fare prices for the same flights when booking via AMEX.
YMMV but with 3x points for restaurants and 2x points for travel and ability to transfer to your preferred loyalty program is a big plus.

      • How do you guys spend the travel credit

Flights see limited and hotels are limited in scale and prices aren't great either for most part

        • Many people don't realise that you can also spend it on experiences - AMEX has literally tens of thousands listed, anything from a balloon ride in Capetown, to a private Louvre tour in Paris or a whisky tour in Edinburgh. There are also many experiences closer to home; I had no need to spend my Explorer credit on any actual airfares or accommodation, so spent it on 4 x degustation lunches with wine in the Adelaide hills :)

    • +2

Be warned about the roadside assistance - it is based on calendar year not build date. The couple of months' difference could mean you either get it or get stuck. Even if you're stuck at home, try move it off your driveway and claim you are not at home otherwise they won't help either.

    • I just recently got this card. How do you get roadside assitance? I can't find it mentioned anywhere on the website.

      • In the insurance terms & conditions its listed.

  • You've done well to sneak your direct referral on here ;) Good luck!

Sad to see the 60k referral bonus for the Velocity Platinum is back down to 20k

    • +6

"You've done well to sneak your direct referral on here".
OP has become a 're-poster' of deals in a desperate attempt to push his direct links whereas people should only be directed to:AMEX referral wiki page: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals
His motives for posting are obvious, and Ozb should have a good look at this!!

      • -4

Again, 2 out of 44 deals I have posted are for AMEX. As mentioned to you previously, suggest you initiate a conversation with the mods if you are not happy with the current guidelines.

        • 'Referral solicitation in comments is not allowed'. Your re-posting of deals to harvest points is making a good point that Referral solicitation in post not be allowed too. Might be a habit that you learnt on Frequent Flyer web sites where reposting deals/deal details is at a ridiculous level!

  • +8

I have recently got this card as next year the family will be going on a holiday to Europe and the card benefits far outweighed the cost for us. Will go through our experiences of the card so far.

Upfront, the 120,000 points can be redeemed for $1200 back in Helloworld vouchers or on the Amex travel website. Redeeming for other gift cards isnt as good of value.

We received the free Reserve card and have used that to book a night at the Swissotel Sydney. Was easy to organise and free of charge :-) You can use this card to get the free flight OR hotel night. Full details in the 2 links below.
    Flight - http://www.americanexpress.com/australia/campaigns/platinum_…
    Hotel - http://www.americanexpress.com/australia/pdfs/PRCC_HotelNigh…

I used the Fine Hotel and Resorts program to book a room at Shangri La Sydney. We booked a room for $320. When checking in we were upgrade to a Tower Suite room. There is only a couple of these rooms in the whole hotel and it was brilliant. The view was amazing. Rate also included $100USD hotel credit and we used that for Chocolate High Tea prepared by Anna Polyviou (who even came over and said hello) and a couple of glasses of french champagne from the bar on level 36.

Early next year we are travelling through Europe so the priority pass will be used extensively. Both my wife and I are enrolled so we will be able to use those, and bring a guest each so our whole family will be able to get into the lounges.

Travel insurance on the card will be used as we booked using points. Most of the American Express terms and conditions don't mention that insurance is covered if you use points, but this one does.

I'm sure those who travel more would get greater benefit out of the card than I have, but I still saw the benefit and applied, and super glad I did.

    • Sounds like you've managed to get great value out of the card pickme. Not sure why someone negged your comment!

      • -3

converting points to vouchers is the worst way to use points

        • +1

Certainly not the best value for points, but for those who won't get the benefit of flying at the pointy end of the plane its a different option. The bonus points can be worth exactly what the annual fee is and everything else with the card effectively becomes free.

I redeemed a one way business class fare to Frankfurt (80750 points) for a friend who will be meeting up with us. Wasn't worth using those points for our family as we will all be in Economy.

  • +1

This introductory offer is available to new American Express Card Members only
Beware you get NO bonus if you already have an amex eg platinum edge!

  • -1

There's nothing special about this card.

    • and there's nothing special about this so called "bargain". This is Amex's standard sign-up offer for this card.

      • +1

funny how we got neg'ed for stating the obvious >.>

        • Not "the obvious" at all. I'm not saying 12 positive votes (the number of votes this deal currently has) is a lot and a card like this would always be hard to appeal to the demographic of Ozbargainers, but this card is really nowhere near as bad as your statement implies it is. That is likely the reason for your negs. This card, believe it or not, does offer significant value, if it suits your personal circumstances.

  • What is the current referral bonus?

    • Do you mean for the referrer? I think it's back down to 20,000 (was 60,000 for the month of July).

  • +1

    Hi OP,

How did you get the Platinum reserve card?

I have called them several times ( about 4 times ) and they have said that they will send out a new application form for the platinum reserve card. I have never received it since march! :(

I think this card is decent value. If you use the roadside assistance I value the card around $400 for a SQ business class ticket. They used to offer Accor Platinum status when i signed up which gave one free night stay in Novotel.
As Per tizey my valuations were

    $1200 annual fee
    less: $150 travel credit (VALUE)
less: $300 platinum reserve flight (VALUE)
    less: $200 roadside assistance (VALUE)
less: $100 Novotel Stay in Singapore
less: $100 Priority Pass - IF fly alot of budget airlines (2 cards one for supplementary holder - total of 4 people)
Loss damage waiver cover if you rent cars!

So $350 for a business class flight (excludes taxes) is exceptional value to me anyway.

    • -1

I think the loss damage waiver cover is my favourite perk of all. I believe it is the only card in Australia to offer this (and I enjoy mentioning it to car rental staff when they try and talk me into paying the daily excess waiver charge).

      • +1

Every platinum or black card I've ever owned had loss damage waiver, generally up to $5,500 (which is more than enough with Australian car rental businesses).

I guess everyone will differing values to each of these inclusions, for example I have roadside assistance already included in a few other products and I don't travel internationally more than once a year so I have no value attributed to the Priority Pass.

        Horses for courses then! :)

        • Hi PBG. Could you share which other cards you are aware of that offer loss damage waiver, and if you still need to pay an excess? When you consider all the different ways car rental companies can claw back from you in the event of an 'incident' (which could include BOTH damage to vehicle and loss of revenue) I'm not sure I'd agree that $5,500 is enough cover, at least for my peace of mind.
The AMEX Platinum Card offers $125,000 worth of coverage, which not only covers excess, but all costs the renter is liable for in the case of any loss being incurred during your rental. Specifically:
          * No excess component — they pay your full amount to the rental company.
          * Covers primary and supplementary card members (which means it covers three extra cardholders on a personal account and 99 extra cardholders on a business account).
          * Includes the card member’s partner and children if they are 21-24 and named on the rental agreement.

It has a minor limitation in that it doesn’t cover rentals that are picked up and/or dropped off within 150 km from your place of residence (but arguably, most people aren't going to rent a car so close to home).

        • -1

@The Champagne Mile: I currently have the ANZ Rewards Black, however all ANZ Platinum or Black cards have this cover (https://www.anz.com.au/personal/credit-cards/using/premium-i…). There is a $350 excess under the ANZ insurance, however I think that's a fairly minor issue because I don't plan on having any accidents in my rental cars (none yet knock on wood!) and if I did then $350 is a fairly minor expense to wear.

I'm not sure you understand rental car insurance in Australia, the way it works here is that the nominated driver (and any other allowed driver under the rental contract, which is pretty much anyone) is automatically covered by full comprehensive insurance under the rental agencies insurance policy. It's just that the excess payable under Hertz/Avis/et al's insurance policy is $2,000 - $5,000 depending on driver age, car taken, etc. You can write off a rental car into a Ferrari and you will only ever be up for the excess of $2k-$5k. The credit card insurance just takes the majority of that excess off your hands and leaves you with only $350 to pay, or in the case of the this Amex card $0.

And for the record, the last two rental cars I've used in Australia was both at home so for me the 150km limitation is a big problem. Thank goodness for my other Platinum/Black cards then!

EDIT: NAB also have the same loss cover for Platinum & Black cards with $0 excess (https://www.nab.com.au/content/dam/nabrwd/personal/banking/d…) with $0 excess. CBA have the same loss cover for ALL CARDS with $0 excess (https://www.commbank.com.au/personal/apply-online/download-p…) and Westpac have the same loss cover for Platinum & Black cards with $250 excess (https://www.westpac.com.au/docs/pdf/pb/credit-cards/consumer…). It really is a very common feature of any Platinum or above credit card.

    • +1

I had the exact same problem trying to get the Reserve Card application form. I ended up using the below link which someone commented from a previous platinum charge thread. Posted it back to Amex and about a week later my Reserve cards arrived :-)

      Original Comment

      • You're welcome.. :p

  • Have they removed the 1 free day of hotel? I can't seem to find it for this deal

    • Yes they have unfortunately, it was with AccorHotels in the past.

However they have bumped the Amex travel credit up to $300.

      • Bummer. I thought the travel credit was always $300? At least that was what it was in February this year

        • Nope it was $200. Bumped to $300 when lost the free Accor night.

  • Hey The Champagne Mile, can you transfer the points into Air Canada?
Was hoping to use them for our trip to Vancouver next year..cheers for the post.

    • Hi Gutsa. You can do so, but only as a 2 step process (as Air Canada is not one of the 10 airline partners you can automatically transfer to from AMEX).
You'll first need to transfer your points to SPG (Starwood) at the rate of 1:0.5 You can then transfer your 60,000 starpoints 1:1 to Air Canada with a 5000 points bonus per 20,000 transferred (so you'd get 75,000 Air Canada points from an initial outlay of your 120,000 AMEX points). However, as mentioned above in my original post, my pick of the best value would be to redeem your points for SPG Nights and Flights – this gives you 5 nights in a Starwood Category 3 property (choose from a number of Westin, Sheraton and even a St Regis), plus 50,000 points transferred 1:1 to your airline of choice, which could be Air Canada.

      • +1

You beat me to it :-)

    • Sure can but you need to go Amex Rewards to SPG to AC. You might be better though if you transfer to SG to book a flight with AC.
@The Champagne Mile - Keen to hear your thoughts on this one?

    • You may also consider to transfer the points to a Star Alliance partner, for example Singapore Airlines Krisflyer, then book your Air Canada Award ticket(s) using Krisflyer points.

  • I think Rental excess cover is only for O/S rentals. Not interstate/ homestate? I have an Amex, but use Anz Black for car hire cover. Also, still leaves an excess of first $350 off memory.

    • I believe any rental picked up 100 km or more from your place of residence.

      • Anywhere in the T&C's? I rang up earlier this year as it was written as "international" car hire excess cover. I rang for confirmation if international means 'world wide'. The call centre told me it was overseas only, but I have read plenty lately that conflicts this??

        • +1

Yes it is . Here is the extract from page 18

Geographical Scope means worldwide including country of domicile provided
the rental takes place further than one hundred and fifty (150) kilometres from
the permanent or temporary place of residence You are currently residing in.

. Full terms may be found here https://icm.aexp-static.com/Internet/IntlPremiumSites/Platin…

        • @twitch1979:

or temporary place of residence You are currently residing in

If you go on holidays in a different state/country, aren't you 'temporarily residing' in your rental accommodation - thus making it impossible to ever satisfy this clause?

        • @PBG:

I would not read it like that personally. My interpretation is the address you have on record with Amex would be your place of residence or temporary residence. I don't feel the terms are written to try and catch you out and claim that a holiday could be deemed as "temporarily residing".

The following article gave a good comparison of all the credit card based car excess reduction policy's and had the Amex Plat at the top of the pile for the fact the Amex policy covers a lot more than the others and in much clearly language. http://www.pointhacks.com.au/ridehacks-rental-car-excess-gui…

If you are an Amex customer already I have found sending a message to the support team is the best way to get clarify on something like this if you have a concern.

  • does anyone have any idea how the Virgin lounge verifies the card is for the basic card member and not a supplementary card?

Access is complimentary for the Basic Platinum Card Member and one guest only.

    • I don't have any experience with this, sorry. But I have read on other forums (AFF etc) that card members have found that supplementary card holders have been welcomed into Virgin lounges when presenting the sup card, no questions asked. Will post a link if I can locate one.

    • +1

Supplementary card is welcome the same as the primary card holder from my experience . My wife uses her supplementary card and can also still take in a guest.

  • Thanks, i thought this may be the case, i doubt the Virgin lounge reception has any access to Amex client information.

  • Do referrals still get 60k points?

The referer does not 60,000 anymore, that was in July only.

      • Depends. I got 3 referrals on the Amex Velocity that were for applications in August (I gave it to a mate in August, so definitely not prior), and I got credited 60,000 points for each referral.

I think this all changed yesterday - 15th August was the end date for the bonus referral points I think.

  • An update for those currently holding another AMEX card that should provide some reassurance about bonus points posting for this card. AMEX terms and conditions have recently been modified to state that "Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any other Consumer Charge Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer."

This means that those who currently hold or have recently held an AMEX issued credit card (not a charge card) are eligible to pick up the bonus points! (Apologies, I can't post a link to the terms and conditions, as they are only available via a referral link).

Update today - the sign on bonus for this card has just been increased to 100,000 points, when using the standard AMEX link. Referral offer still stands at 90,000 points (but will update post if / when there is any change to this).

Update today - if you add a supplementary cardholder to your account, they will credit you a bonus 5000 MR points the same as they seem to be doing for the explorer card currently.

  • I find the link below where you only pay $950 membership fee and only spend $1100 for the first 2 months before you can get 100k points.

If you have CPA membership this deal is probably slightly better off.

  • Just a quick question on referral sign up. Is there any bonus in doing so like the previous deal where both person get extra 20k points?

    • No

    • Unfortunately not - the referral link and standard link are currently offering the referee exactly the same amount of points (100,000), with the referrer to receive 20,000 points for each new sign on. This is very rare for AMEX referral offers, as they usually offer more points than the standard sign on link (indeed, from what I can see, every other card at the moment offers a larger number for referral vs standard link, with the exception of the explorer card, which doesn't have a referral link). Will update deal if this changes.
