At this price its not really cheaper elsewhere.

You can buy it direct from quest for around $3.00 per bar if you buy multiple boxes.

I would warn against ordering from iherb and similar online shops because they often hold onto old stock and quest bars are 10x better fresh.

Woolworths likely has good turnover for stock so these should be relatively fresh.

Also if you buy direct from Quest try out the new Oatmeal chocolate chip bar, its the best bar so far.

    • The Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Bar also doesn't use Palm Oil unlike most of their other variants.

      • +1

        I didn't realise! thats great!

For anyone interested there are also 4-5 bars that don't use sucralose, I try to stay away from it but Oatmeal Chocolate Chip is just too good.

  • +1

Take off another .15 per bar using WISH cards bought at a 5% discount.

  • I always get for less. Either by Iherb or other supp sales.
Usually I pay about 30 dollars a box.

Plenty of other places if you keep an eye out.

  • Great price for the best protein bar around.

  • +1

Are we in a time warp? All the Woolworths stores in my area have been selling Quest bars for many months (albeit just 2-3 flavours depending on where you go).

But I'm not going to argue with an "introductory" price drop :)

  • +5

Can someone explain why these are so popular? They don't seem all that cost effective compared to protein powders, even at the discounted price. I get the convenience aspect, but still, $3/bar seems quite steep to me.

    • It is… Protein bars are always sold at high mark up. :(

    • In my opinion powders and bars are for different purposes.

Powders have little to no fat and are for muscle gain or to have in addition to your meal depending on your diet. A lot of people find powders harder to drink at times, they are very full on and over time you can get very sick of them.

Bars are high in fat and are very filling, they are useful for meal replacement and weight loss in addition to being able to use them for muscle gain.

Yes you can use powders for weight loss, I just think its useless as you don't have a fat source so you need to cook other food anyway so why bother with the powder?

Personally I love the bars as I do Keto, high fat, high protein, low carb.

*Obviously different people have different opinions on how to gain muscle, lose weight or maintain a healthy body.

      • Hmmm, I see. I guess I could see the utility for different diet goals.

Though as someone who dislikes drinking the powder shakes, it doesn't quite seem worthwhile. I'd rather try making my own bars at home for the best of both worlds.

        • +1

Making your own bars is going to be superior in my opinion because you can add more nutritious foods as well as ingredients that companies can't add due to shelf life.

However it can be a lot of effort to make your own bars both high protein, high fat, low carb and taste good enough that you don't get sick of it. But it can definitely be done!

I dislike shakes as well, I still drink them occasionally as you can get some powder powders that have almost no carbs in them, bars always have 3-4g of carbs in them so it depends on the current target you have for carbs.

    • One of the advantages is that it is low carb/low sugar, so these are almost a necessity for ketogenic diets.

    • -1

      I get the convenience aspect

You answered your own question. Some people like to carry a bar with them that they can open up and eat whenever instead of carrying a shaker with protein powder and warm milk around.

$3/bar seems quite steep to me.

Some people have jobs that give them a high enough income to be able to afford to spend $3.

      • Some people are also able to answer questions without coming off like an ass.
Also, some people, particularly those on a bargain site, like to think about purchases before buying in order to get the most for their money.

But by all means, make this a pissing contest about income for no reason at all other than to be condescending.

        • You asked the questions, and I answered them.

This is the cheapest and best tasting protein bar compared to others, so still a bargain.

Unless you’re getting paid below minimum wage, you should be able to afford $3.

You might as well post on fast food deals telling people it will be cheaper to make your own food by carrying around a lettuce, meat, cheese, buns, salt and mayo in bulk and assembling it in public instead of buying a big mac. Some people value their time and convenience and are willing to pay for it. And yes, some people have jobs and busy schedules where its not worth the trouble to make your own protein bars at home when they can just easily afford a pre made one.

        • @Orpheus:

It works out to be $1100 per year if eaten every day. More than twice as expensive as powder. I'm so sorry that gives me pause in considering it a bargain, regardless of my income.

If you can't handle people with different monetary priorities, maybe you shouldn't be on OzBargain.

        • @ProspectiveDarkness:

You are looking at it wrong.

You need to decide if protein + fat is what you want, or just protein, as protein powder has little to no fat.

        • @samfisher5986:

You could mix it with coconut milk in a shake, that has plenty of fats.

But that wasn't really the point. I was merely questioning whether they're that worthwhile, which for me, they're not really. Meanwhile Orpheus is just shitting on people for thinking before buying for being poor, basically. Class act.

        • -1

@ProspectiveDarkness: So the only two options is to either buy 1 every day, or dont buy it at all? Do you see everything else in black and white? I eat these occasionally. I also drink protein shakes. I also eat proper meals. It's possible to have multiple options available to you and to take advantage of more than just one of them. You cant take protein powder with milk or a cooked chicken with you at all times.

  • +2

Am I the only one that finds these overrated?
I had a plain chocolate one, and it was not all that different to the musashi one I've tried previously.

I also don't get why people buy boxes of this. If you're routinely going to buy these 'supplements' to increase protein intake, aren't protein powders cheaper?

    • Low carb version of Mars bar. More fun than a shake.

    • +1

Musashi are poor quality bars that use Maltitol. Maltitol has many side effects including feeling sick or having a laxative effect.

Not only that but Maltitol is high glycemic and spikes your blood sugar.

If you want to learn more, try googling it.

Also see above for powders vs bars, they are completely different products for different uses.

      • maltitol gives me the shits

        • It gives everyone the shits, its just the amount of malitol that changes as to when you will get the shits.. :)

        • @samfisher5986: there must be some percentage of the population that it doesn't affect like that though, or no product with it would even sell. I could tell just after a couple of times of eating something with maltitol.

        • @marquise:

I have argued with a friend about this, I told him to eat three bars with malitol in them in one meal… he had the shits.

I'm pretty sure everyone has their limits.

I've also found that your malitol limit changes day to day depending on different factors, you could be fine with two bars today, but tomorrow you won't be.

        • @samfisher5986: lol I'm glad you went as far as testing it out. Poor friend.

  • What is the consensus on net carbs?

    • Malitol is the biggest lie out there and should never be considered in Net Carbs, yet most bars do this.

Quest is one of the best bars in the world because the sugar alcohols they use mean that almost everyone only digests the net carbs mentioned in the bars.

There are other bars out there that are similar but they are hard to find.

  • The cookie dough, berry & apple pie are all winners for me.

  • -2

Im on a keto diet and keep my net carbs pretty low. Often try a new product out of interest. I had a cookie dough bar on sale and thought it was possibly the most awful chemical laden mass of crap ive ever stuffed into my face. I spat it out the car window, let the dog have a sniff who also who turn his nose at it and looked worried and then binned the rest having taken a look at the ingredient list. It was a veritable cocktail of nasty shit and i'd warn others to avoid it like poison.

    • You probably had a stale bar. I would try one from Woolworths or order direct from Quest.

There is nothing in the ingredients list that you should be considering bad except for maybe sucralose, but Quest have bars without them.

      • +1

"In animals examined for the study, Sucralose (Splenda) reduced the amount of good bacteria in the intestines by 50 percent, increased the pH level in the intestines, contributed to increases in body weight and affected P-glycoprotein (P-gp) levels in such a way that crucial health-related drugs could be rejected."

yeah that sucralose is baaaaaaaad shit. id advise anyone interested in their own health to try a rule ive set for myself. treat your stomach like a fish pond. No nasty chemicals, just nice simple organic crap and an occasional prescribed medicine. Gut health is super important.

        • So.. why not just buy the bars without sucralose?

Also I bet you don't eat that healthy anyway, people fail to research all types of healthy food and instead fixate on sugar alcohols.

        • @samfisher5986:

          Did someone say Alcohol?

  • +1

I had my first quest bar from Derrimut gym on the weekend, got cookies and cream. I was so excited because I heard it was amazing, but I was pretty disappointed =(. It wasn't bad, but it definitely wasn't all that cracked up to be (maybe mine was stale)? Nonetheless, for $3 I was disappointed =(

    • +1

Most of the bars you get at places like that are on the verge of going stale.

Buy a bar from Woolworths or from Quest direct.

Also don't buy cookies and cream as your first bar, its a love it or hate it type of flavour I've found.

Buy Oatmeal Chocolate chip or Chocolate chip cookie dough first.

    • -2

they are shit, but i guess if people are addicted to sugar and want to fake a sweet its an option. To me though thats like giving up cigarettes to smoke a pipe.

  • +2

POKEMON IS FREE…….go for a walk!

    • its not free at all. its people generating huge volumes of data for a moderate outlay thats used and sold on for commercial purposes. The cost of pokemon to you is to give up your information and data in perpetuity,

      • Turn your privacy settings on Android and apple….google it!

  • What flavours do people recommend?

    • +1

      My top 5:
      choc chip cookie dough
smores (doesn't rate well in reviews but I like it)
      cashew coconut
      apple pie
      white choc raspberry

choc mint isn't too bad either, bit chemically but nice once in a while.

I also agree with comments above that freshness makes a huge difference. I've bought short expiry stock before and it was still ok, but fresh ones noticeably better.

  • -2

In terms of taste these are overrated

Titan bars are much better and $30 a box at cotd

    • -1

Titan bars are unhealthy as they have malitol.

Of course it will taste better if its unhealthy.

      • so you agree with me?

exercise can be considered unhealthy too so…..

        • Why don't you just buy chocolate and ice cream? Its cheaper then Titan bars.

        • @samfisher5986: Because I don't need ice cream or chocolate and titan bars fit my macros and taste better

        • @cheesesticks:

Except Titan Bars probably don't fit into your macros because you are incorrectly counting the sugar alcohols as its Malitol.

        • @samfisher5986: even if you count the sugar alcs another 5g of net carbs will do no harm especially if you take it before your workout

        • @cheesesticks:

Why not just get something that will be much more beneficial?

        • +1

@samfisher5986: well I don't eat the bars everyday and only take them when I can't hit my protein for the day which can happen if don't feel like meat or too busy

        • -1

          @cheesesticks:

Seems like protein powder is a much better fit for your situation then.

Again, I don't think Malitol is good for anyone.

        • @samfisher5986: I used to take protein powder regularly but since I've balanced my diet I only need a bar every now and again. Plus protein powders mixed water don't taste as good as being mixed with milk and its much less convenient for me. Also I like physically 'eating' something rather than drinling if that makes any senae

  • Old formula was good. The latest recipe is terrible and not worth $3.

    • They changed the formula since making the bad formula. its better then it was originally in my opinion.
