TheGoodGuys Just Rejected a Price match?

I was only testing their price matching, but they managed to reject a perfectly good price match for the reason that "It will lose them money."

I've seen others price match this item at Officeworks and it's definitely Australian stock/price match…able.

What's my next step? Try a different store?

buy from the retailer offering the best price?

      • Should have tried Harvey Norman, if they could beat a price match (which I think they would), is the cheapest for me

        • I thought Officeworks was next cheapest on price beat. Lowest in Office works atm is $948 through MobileCiti then price beat to 95% = $900.

What'd you find at Harvey Norman? This is the standard S7 btw.

        • Yep, I have taken deals from MSY to Harvey Norman when they have deals, and they matched in the past.

    • +51

Price matching is a strategy by retailers to prevent discounting, by signalling their competitors that there is no benefit in doing so.

If a business is willing to offer a good deal I will support them and not officeworks / tgg.

      • +2

It took me a few years to realise this.

      • +2

It happens in oligopoly market structures (only a few big players). Prices are kept at a level that maximises profits through price signaling or cartel like behaviour as no one wins in price wars, except the customer.

      • +3

By buying from the store that originally offered the best sale price encourages them to have better deals more often.

In the long run driving down prices from other retailers.

Stores that offer price matching tend to be lazy in offering best deals straight up..

  • +4

this has happened to me and i went to another good guys and they were happy to do that.
the sales rep is being an arse.

    • +3

Must have got the same sales person
couldn't be less helpful or rude if she
tried, also refused to take their own voucher! Total nightmare, go to a decent store

      • mine was an old bloke at DFO Essendon.
Went to highpoint and they did it on the spot.

  • You should hold them to their price beat policy. If the store you are pricematching is an Australian based business, there should be no reason to turn you down.

They don't reply to their contact us emails/forms.

I can try a different branch, I'd feel silly going into the same place and same people to ask them again… but I will definitely try harder this time. What do they gain out of me buying somewhere else? Do they just not get commission on price matched things?

      • +4

Maybe you could try give another store a call and explain to them exactly what happened at the first one and what you are after. Saves you a trip only to find out they are going to reject it elsewhere, or you could get the deal you are after

      • They don't reply.

Is that you didn't get an instant response or they have not replied in 2-3 days?

        • +4

I tried a couple weeks ago, then again a week ago, now recently 2 days ago. None were ever repleid to.

        • +1

          @StoneSin: that's pretty bad.

        • @stephendt: I had serious love for TGG until those email ignores…

        • @StoneSin: Sounds familiar. I tried to get in touch with them for a price match on JB Hi-FI's price after purchasing from TGG (which is part of their price match if there's somewhere cheaper within 30 days or something like that). Never heard a peep back despite multiple enquiries, very disappointing.

    • +17

Unless it's in their policy. When I worked at Myer (many moons ago) the price match policy was that it needed to be above cost price, even by $1. This is reasonable IMO. I cannot expect a business to sell something that they're losing money on.

But then I rarely do price matches as I just buy from the store selling it cheapest in the first place.

      • +7

I understand this and makes total sense as a business entity, but they should put it up on their site under terms and conditions. There is no mention of additional t&cs on the price beat section. Somehow this gives the misleading impression that price beating another retailer is easy.

That being said, I have been turned down a few times by TGG to price match someone else. So now, I just buy it from the original retailer, not worth the uncertainty of getting rejected and time wasted for a few dollars saving. :)

Edit: Ah… the T&Cs are on the page, just hidden away in an accordian as others have pointed out.

      • I can see where they are coming from in that they don't want to lose money but I would figure if they are going to go as low as $1 in difference they could try afford themselves some customer goodwill by honoring the price match. Otherwise it just becomes a game of retail chicken on the mark up on these things - who will balk first and go lower than the other until they are making at least 5 cents? (according to the commenter above me) on the purchase. Yes, mark up is how the business makes money and operates but its not like there is always a price match available on every product. They have to be competitive. You win some, you lose some, or maybe reconsider the price match policy entirely. I personally could not be bothered going out of my way to attempt a price match any more unless its stated on OzB that a particular store already has agreed to it and the receipts posted - I feel like I hear rejections on the price match far more commonly than them accepting it. However this may just be a confirmation bias fallacy on my part

      • +1

Cost price they see at retail is, not the Net Cost price that is for sure.

  • +7

Such a restricted list of companies they will price beat. Almost seems like a scam to say that they price match.

    • where's the restricted list?

All I could find was Ebay, Dick Smith and Masters.

          @snook:

I had them flat out refuse to even give me a discount let alone match at Castle Hill Good Guys. I don't bother shopping there anymore unless there's a spectacular bargain posted here. Easy.

    • I had a long discussion with the ACCC on their price beat advertising. They agreed it was mis-leading, but the fine print covers their Un-Australian arse.
      Vote with your feet.

  • +11

Just buy it at officeworks, dont reward the competitor.

    • -3

Officeworks seem to have the worst 'deals', but they make their 5% price match really visible and are often cheapish. Goodguys have great deals and credits, etc. but they try and swindle you into not using it.

      • +2

How is it a worse deal if it's cheaper?

        • Deals. As in, store credit, specials, etc.

Price match isn't exactly a deal, it's a way of service. It's better than many deals sometimes though!

  • +2

Appliances Online also refuse to price match when "it costs us more to buy the product than that"

If it's really a big thing to you, and there's absolutely nothing against it in the small print of their terms and conditions, you can just lodge a complaint with Fair Trading and they will get it for you.

    • That's… not how Fair Trading works. A company in breach of the law can be fined for false advertising, but they can't legally be forced to sell anything to anybody for any price, the legislation involved doesn't allow for that. Fair Trading and the ACCC is punitive in nature, they don't act based on individual cases to 'fix' what happened.

      • It does if it's not specifically listed in the terms and conditions or the fine print and I recently had Fair Trading settle a case for me, for this very thing, with Masters.

  • +6

My partner put in a complaint to consumer protection regarding their price match policy late last year. They are currently investigating this since mid July.

    • +2

I complained to Fair Trading (NSW) about Masters price match and they sorted it in 2 weeks.

  • What is the item?

Try phoning up a GoodGuys store to pricebeat.

HN and GG have pricebeat for me over phone before. (Then go to store and pick it up)

They pretty good over the phone. (easy business/ sale)

Phoned up and asked for someone with authority to review the competitors ad.

They should give you their final offer over the phone and ask you to come in.

    Give it another go?

    • -3

I don't use phones (strange person I am). I will go down to another store, have to go that way tomorrow anyway :)

      • your time used in store is probably worth more than the potential saving.
get someone to call on your behalf?

        Wish you all the best.

What are you trying to purchase?

        • If I wasn't going that way I'd agree, but it's on the same road I take.

My purchase is pretty generic. Saw someone on here get a price beat at Officeworks for an Exeltek Samsung Galaxy S7 ($955 + 5% off = $900).

I wanted to see if I could get the same sort of deal with GoodGuys, then maybe add that $25 off coupon. It didn't really work all that well in one store, I was only testing.

Are these ones starting from under 700 bucks the same phone?

          http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?price-min=600…

Just curious cause i don't know crap about phones, but seemed to be too much cheaper to be the same thing right?

        • @wukachuka: Same phone yes… But not exactly, technically they are different series for different countries.

If you buy the cheaper ones on the net they'll be coming from outside Australia and you'll have to trust who you buy it with to give you a fair warranty… among other changes, like warranty being valid in Hong Kong not Australia so distance covered by the retailer.

All in all, same phones (Samsung S7), but perhaps different hardware and software inside. i.e. different carrier signals, different processor.

Search for 'Grey Import', that's the name of overseas imports with less than fun benefits, but cheaper price :)

        • @xeion: Btw wanted to reiterate that using a phone as a phone is pretty rare nowadays. It's more of a pocket computer.

  • +1

Complain to head office, because the terms and conditions are very clear. If you are within them, you have a right to a price match. I have had bad experiences with Good Guys in the past refusing as well, I never shop with them any more because of that. Google reviews show that others have had the same. I think some franchisees are just rude and stingy.

Also write on their Facebook page. I have seen a few people complain and GG responded saying they can organise the price match online if you PM your details and your local GG store.

    They are in Mulgrave VIC.

Maybe the Springvale TGG are known to match Exceltek.
(yes seems to be brick and mortar store)

Give it another go if you please.

But, $900+ for S7 is pretty costly IMO.

    • -1

Yeah. But I think it's quite cheap for an Australian model with 2 years warranty. At least as far as I can see last few months.

Either that or wait for deals on Ebay and get same price kind of.

I'm tempted to look at other phones, thought HTC 10 would be perfect for me but it is still the same price as the S7.

I want a phone that runs apps (not games) quite well into the future, takes good photos, has speaker and overall will be my 1 gadget I have everywhere.

      • +1

Consider getting Galaxy S6. It is still an excellent phone and a bit cheaper. Takes great photos, fast and should last atleast another few years. Also make sure you get a $15 Xiaomi 10,000Mah portable charger for your travels.

        • -2

I usually don't need portable chargers. Very good with battery usage haha.

  • Hi guys, UPDATE from TGG Fb messenger:

Thank you for sending these links through —. Neither of these companies are competitors that we offer price matching for. Please follow this link to view our full terms and conditions on Price Beat https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/pay-less. If you find a lower advertised price with one of the major competitors listed, please send through the screenshot and we will be more than happy to see if you are eligible for Price Beat. Thank you.

    • +2

What a scam. make sure you send this to the ACCC. not good enough to say Price Beat* and then hide sneaky conditions behind the *

Easy to complain online. and you've already completed the first step by raising it with the retailer.

  • Try officeworks?

    They match Msy. Landmark comp.
    Worth a try

  • +2

StoneSin. why are you bagging tgg when you're associated with them?

    • Misclick haha. The amount of times I've accidentally clicked that button… It should be moved.

  • Read my post here RE: price matching

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/174700

  • Who are you trying to price match with?

  • +4

Once I asked Harvey Norman rep to price match the iPod Shuffle which Big W was selling for $48 (and HN had for $78).
Harvey Norman was closer to my place, so I went there first.

The sales rep replied saying "We don't price match with lower end cheap stores like Big W".

I just walked out and went and bought one at Big W.

No point arguing, my time is more valuable.

    • +2

Should have just bought it from Big W in the first place and not wasted your time trying to price match.

      • +3

Yes, but HN was a minute from my place. So wanted to check before driving to Big W.

  • -4

Get over it, or is it really worth winging about them not price matching? They didn't price match, so what? No loss to you.

  • I don't think we all see the whole picture here. What product and price and where you see the price lower?

  • +6

If The Good Guys won't do it try The Bad Guys.

    • +2

A bit extreme don't you think? I'd try The Neutral Guys first.
I think their motto is "Pay less. Pay more. We don't give a s**t either way."

  • I've never had TGG honour either a pricematch or their own "pay less, pay cash" BS promises…I don't bother with them unless they're significantly lower priced than competitors upfront.

  • Had a similar issue with Harvey Norman Browns Plains. They refused to match a JB Hifi laptop 100m down the road saying it was below cost price. HN Price was $324, JB Hifi $199… JB Hifi had stock but I had a $25 voucher/discount with HN. Called up Harvey Norman Garden City and they were happy to price match JB hifi. When I got to Harvey Norman Garden City the manager said they should of price matched… but the stores are privately owned and the one from Browns Plains must be a tight arse.

  • JB Hi-Fi pulled the exact same crap on me when I bought my Logitech G502, and they wouldn't price match MSY. 'We'll lose money on it' the salesman said, even though the difference was like $15. Went to a different one and the guy happily price matched it.

  • +2

Why not go to the store who was offering the best price originally? Don't you want to support them for trying to offer a straight competitive price without you having to negotiate or shop around?

  • +2

If you were trying to price match this one here: http://www.exeltek.com.au/samsung-galaxy-s7-g930-32gb-smartp…

Then it seems clear the reason they do not want to price match is because it is network branded (and they will likely lose money on a product they do not need to technically match), compared to this one: http://www.exeltek.com.au/samsung-galaxy-s7-g930-32gb-smartp… which is unbranded

    • -1

No, the reason they don't want to match is because "It loses them money."

  • Sometimes it depends on the popularity of the item if stock levels are low and the item is popular, it makes sense to decline price match and sell to someone else at higher mark up. These stores often have complicated commission structures, people are much less likely to help you if it is going to effect there statistics and commissions.
Don't forget the tourist refund scheme when going overseas with the new phone

    • -1

How does TRS work, if I'm buying a phone and am guaranteed to leave probably a couple weeks after buying it and spending time longer overseas indefinitely?

How would TRS work in regards to a purchase from TGG and a purchase from Grey importers?

      • You need to have a spent more than $300 With one retailer to claim TRS, you need to have the unaltered item and the receipt that shows the abn of the seller and take it in your carry on and show it after you clear immigration
You go to TRS desk and they then reimburse your credit card the GST amount paid. There is an app you can use to speed the process up. Just make sure you arrive at airport early enough to line up

        • -1

So if I were to not use the phone until I went overseas, I'd potentially save another $90? Awesome. But the not using before I leave is a bit hard given you'd want to be all set up for your trip haha!

        • @StoneSin: yeah you could get it out and set it up and use it.
just clean it and put it back in box before flight, then get it back out after shown to TRS staff, and use it again.
I did It when I went to USA on a road trip for a month, price matched a gps system set it up with a USA maps software then put it back in box. Hire car company was charging $15us a day for Gps hire. Then I had a gps in Aus when I came back

        • -1

@Stewardo: And if they say "We can't, you used it." Then I'm back where I started, right? Awesome.

        • @StoneSin: I think you will be fine:
"items that have already been used (in part or in full) in Australia (for example food, perfume etc.). It’s ok to use cameras, iPhones, clothing, etc."

No mentions of samsung on gov website but I'm sure it's ok to use it

          https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Ente/Tour/Are-you-a-traveller

        • +2

@StoneSin: I don't know where you're getting the 'I can't use it' idea - there is no such limitation regarding the TRS.
You are going to need to do 2 things:
          1. Get a tax invoice with their ABN (that usually means no grey imports.)
          2. Take the item to the TRS desk and show it to them with the invoice. (Use the TRS app beforehand to save time.)

(BTW, it will be $82 refund on a $900 purchase, not $90.)

        • @McFly:

Other guy said "you need to have the unaltered item", thought this meant boxed items and sealed.

Yeah sounds like a can-do thing!

Ah, first link said GST was 10%, 10% of $900 is $90. All gee, $8 difference is nothing :)

        • @StoneSin: They mean the item can't be modified ie. you can't put mags on it. :p
          $820 + 10% GST (approx $82) = approx $900…

        • @McFly: Ah, both of those make much more sense than my backwards thinking.

  • +3

As Kwjibo666 pointed out, Exeltek sell two versions of the S7.

    http://www.exeltek.com.au/samsung-galaxy-s7-g930-32gb-smartp…
This one for $955 that is network branded, a product that The Good Guys do not sell.

    http://www.exeltek.com.au/samsung-galaxy-s7-g930-32gb-smartp…
And this one for $1055 that isn't network branded, a product that is exactly the same as what the The Good Guys sell.

Why are you even whinging that they won't match the price on a different product?

As for others having it matched at Officeworks, the network branded phone doesn't meet Officeworks criteria for price matching either. A salesperson making a mistake does not set a precedent whereby they now have to match this price (although showing them the proof might help squeeze it through :P)

    • -8

Why are you even whinging that they won't match the price on a different product?

This is not why they won't price match. But it must be hard for someone like yourself to read…

      • +3

Yes and it loses them money because it is not the same product, this product you are trying to get them to match does not meet their terms and conditions and I doubt it would meet any major retailer's terms and conditions for price matching.

Their reasoning may have been incorrect when they told you they cannot do it, but it does not change the fact it is not the same product being sold at both stores

        • -3

The fact that they don't show model number or any real manufacturer specifications, means that this is entirely irrelevant from a customer's point of view.

    • Price beat by Officeworks is cheaper and doesn't require shipping. Same goes for TGG, if they price beat it.

      • Just make sure you show them the correct model then, not the Branded version from Optus or TELSTRA. ( meaning not the $955 model)

        • -1

I'm not familiar with models, or at least that is what TGG retailers think. So therefore no, I'll show them whatever Samsung S7 I want granted it is similar.

  • I bought a Bosch Dishwasher last week from Goodguys, Harvey Normals which was closer to me wouldn't pricematch the goodguys advertised price. So its not just the goodguys that wont price match.. It comes to point where if its below their cost they wont do it.
