Samsung UA55KS8000W 55" (139.7 cm) Super Ultra HD (SUHD) Smart LED TV - $2,479.99 @ Costco (Membership Required)

180

This TV was priced at $2,789.99 @ Costco just a few weeks ago; they've dropped the price again. I was in the market for a new telly so I snapped one up. There were plenty in stock (Majura Park store, Canberra).

I think I'll wait for the Super Ultra MEGA Whizzbang Smart OLED Holographic TV. Needs to be at least 3m wide though so my kids can't fit it in their bedroom.

  • Is this even a good deal? You can get a 60" 4k samsung or under $2,000.

Need to be comparing apples with apples. The current model Series 8 55" (KS8500) retails for $3,349 and JB have it on sale at the moment for $2,996 (incidentally the same price they're selling the KS8000 [per this bargain] for). So this is still $500 cheaper than JB's current price and $150 cheaper than the cheapest hit on staticice.com.au.

      • For $406 more with free shipping I think the current model of this (not >1 year old runout) is better value

Not going to argue that the current model is better technology but +$406 is nothing to sneeze at.

        • @cactoid: I have hayfever right now, I am sneezing at everything!

only difference is that the 8500 is a curved screen and has slightly better contrast/brightness…

        • This is the 2016 model. 8500 is curved (500 code is curved).

Good price OP. I paid only $80 less after the yet to be received $300 cashback from TGG last week. Excellent TV, if a bit overpriced.

Yes, I'm sure they're running these models out to make way for an even bigger acronym.

    • +3

All FHD stock is being run out to make way for QUHD stock (Quarter Ultra HD)

      • I'm so worried that will be a thing.

      • Hahaha.. Quarter UHD.. too funny

  • Did you notice if they had the 65" version and what the price was?

    • I think they did have it, and it was also reduced, but sorry, I didn't note down the price as 55" is perfect for the space I have.

      • Thanks. Might give them a call and see what they are selling it for.

I've never shopped at Costco, how does the 'Instant Rebate' work?

        • It costs $60/year for membership, so you'd need to factor that in if you're not already a member. As far as the rebate goes, the price is as marked - when you take the TV through the register, it'll be rung up at $2,479.99.

        • The "Instant Rebate" is automatically deducted at the checkout - you don't need to do anything
The only thing you would need to do is take out a membership - the current annual membership fee is $60pa - so the savings on your first purchase would take care of that

        • Please report back on pricing if you find anything interesting.

        • @cactoid:

You can get a full refund on the membership if that matters. Buy membership, walking buy TV, refund membership on the way out. No questions asked.

          @jetfar:

They don't sell the 65" KS8000, only the KS9000 which was around the $4,300 mark. Not a bad price, but nothing to get too excited about given everywhere else has it for $44xx at the moment.

        • [@BlinkyBill](/comment/3907 ax636/redir):

You can also get a full refund on the tv even after 5 years using their satisfaction guarantee. Then use the refund to get a current model.

    WTF is Super UHD?
    Is it Full UHD (8K)?

    • Nope, it's a phrase made up by Samsung marketing.

I'm guessing it means these models have markedly improved colour gamut and are HDR capable due to Quantum Dot … technology. NFI what that is, probably more made up marketing mumbo-jumbo.

Nothing to do with resolution though.

To confuse things further the Olympics is being broadcast in 8K using a format known currently as Super Hi-vision. Though I think the only way to watch this is stitching current Full HD screens together. not sure how you're gonna get 22.2 sound yet :p

      • Quantum dot is actually a REAL (indi-ustry) technology (previoiusly marketed by Samsung as "Nomno crystal") which delivers much better colour, unlike "SUHD", which as you say is Samsung marketing trying to convince buyers that one model is FAR superior to another.

        • "Nomno crystal"

How the hell do they come up with these names? :p

        • @Diji1: lol. Sorry was meant to be Nano. Typing in the dark on my laptop.

          @Possumbly: Lel.

  • You know, with the mobile displays, a "Super AMOLED" Means that it was pentile display. Doubt it's the case here…

Just be aware that HDR does not work in 'game' mode, so don't go buying this thinking it will work fine on your HDR enabled Xbox One S.

In order to get HDR when playing a game, you'll need to switch to 'movie' mode which then increases input lag well past 100ms, much higher than the 21ms in game mode.

    • +1

That is a great point to bring up as probably buried in the user manual and saves the pain of setup, reboxing and returning if you need this feature.

  • Hi Folks,

Any updated offer for Samsung 55" UHD 4K HDR @ Costco ?

    Cheers

That's a good telly - the comparable US model is rtings.com best 55" TV of the year under $1500(US)

It's here for only $11 more - without membership and with free metro delivery

    https://www.appliancecentral.com.au/samsung-55-inch-samsung-…

Expect it to get cheaper closer to Christmas though.

    • Good find! FWIW, "free metro delivery" in this case includes MEL/SYD/BNE/ADL, by the looks. Doesn't include PER (+$193), HOB (+$206), or even CBR (+$99). [The shipping estimate doesn't seem to cope with postal codes in the NT.]
