  I took up the free offers a few months back. I'm glad it's off my machine. The bugs made me feel like I'd lost control of my own machine and took some time to work around. The support was a joke. The forced reboots were unbearable.

  It slowed my computer to a crawl when I was using newsleecher so I moved to Avira free which seems to be good but it is starting to show ads.

    Damn..curious, what OS are you using? Bitdefender seems to test the best on Win10 which is what made me purchase, but these comments make me weary of installing it now.

      Windows 7.

      I think it was just the way it would scan new files, when downloading from newsgroups there might be 4 or 5 small new files created every second and as a result the mouse would become minimally responsive and everything would slow down. This is on an i7 with an SSD and uninstalling BitDefender resolved the issue. Except for that it seemed to be good but was a deal breaker for me. It was also not very widely reported as a problem so might have been specific to my set up.

  I'd never used AV before but I got DNS unlocker ads recently. I actually used hijack this to get rid of it (was an IP in the registry) but I'm just after something that works and doesn't hog resources or come with a bunch of other software I don't need. Still looking. I would probably have tried this but since discovering it i've read too many bad reviews like syousefs
