Seagate Freeagent 250GB External HDD $99 from Kmart

120

250GB Seagate Freeagent HDD $99 save $60.

Plus heaps of other back-to-school specials, naturally — see http://www.kmart.com.au/catalogue/20080103/default.asp

(Officeworks HAD this for $119, but I've heard they're price-matching Kmart, so go wherever's more convenient!)

  • Thanks ozfree! I was reading that catalogue yesterday and there were a lot of good bargains. I think both Kmart and Big W also have DVD sale at the moment.

  • The same deal can be found at Officeworks today in case anyone misses out on this one at K-Mart.

  • Ah, I can remember the days when these things cost an arm and a leg (I still I bought one).

Come to think of it, I also remember arranging to have 8Mb of RAM for my first PC. Cost of upgrade from 4MB? $300. Yep, Mb not Gb!

[Picked up one of these last night]

    • Well. My first computer, a Commodore VIC-20, has 4 kilobytes of RAM and a cassette deck for loading programs… In a few year time someone might come across this deal and say, "what?! 250GB?! My mobile phone has more capacity than that!"

  • Just in case they ran out of these hard drives, they're the same price at Officeworks. Saw them at 2 different stores today but stocks are limited from what I've been told.

Then again a 500Gb LaCie is $161 from Officeworks, maybe that is a better buy?

  • Thanks Mini2 - I went to Officeworks to get them, as two of the K-Mart stores where sold out. Officeworks marked down their prices to reflect the K-Mart offering (despite being advertised in their Officeworks catalogue for $119). There was a Western Digital 500Gb selling for $158. I bought one of these as well ;)

  • Before you buy this, make sure you read the review. I'm pretty sure that these suffered from major heat issues with a high failure rate.

  • winter: Which review might that be? I find it hard to find honest reviews in general when many places want to keep the suppliers happy so they continue to get free stuff, or they just arn't able to test them long term. User forums can be a bit hit and miss as well due to the most disgruntled buyers being the most vocal.

Either way I think these Seagate drives are pretty ugly and much prefer the WD MyBook line from a purely aesthetic POV. Though I don't own either yet so can;t comment on performance. Waiting for the 1TB MyBooks to drop down a bit further before I drop some coin.

  • yamumma: I can't find the original article, but looking through the reviews at amazon there are alot of unhappy customers. As you said, disgruntled buyers are usually the most vocal though:
