New Coles Mobile 28 Day Plans^: Unlimited Talk and Text with 2GB Data $20 or with 7GB & 250 Min International* Calls for $40

971

New plans with Coles mobile (Optus 4G) only released a few days ago.

Price wise and taking into consideration the data allowances, these seem better than the Aldi, Kogan, Amaysim and Vaya mobile plans currently on offer.

^ 28 DAYS EXPIRY
* International calls to China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, UK and USA .

Coverage: Coles Prepaid plans are available on the Optus 3G and 4G Plus networks. Coverage availability varies depending on your device and location. With 3G devices, you can access the Optus 3G (UMTS 2100MHz/900MHz) network. With 4G devices and a compatible plan, you can access the Optus 3G network plus some or all of the Optus 4G Plus network (LTE 700/1800/2100/2300/2600MHz).

Honestly, the 28 days expiry kills it for me. That essentially means I'll be paying for an extra month every year.

    • +10

Most telco's are adopting the 28 day expiry model. I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes the standard for all telco's by the end of next year.

      • +11

I feel like the negs on this comment are due to not being able to accept the truth.. because I can't say I think you're wrong.

      • I think you might be right:
        http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/mobiles/confusing-people-…
Prepaid: Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, Virgin, Amaysim

It does seem to be only prepaid?

        • +1

It does seem to be only prepaid?

because they rely on postpaid customers to go over the voice and data allocation, which is very common on postpaid plans

        • +18

Telstra prepaid is still calendar month as long as you set up auto recharge

      • I'd like to see this outlawed.

  • +20

Seems like not a bad offer but I'd rather pay a similar amount on ALDI Mobile (30 day billing vs this 28 day billing) with the Telstra 4G network over Optus 4G network:

$20/30 days for ALDI 1.5GB data plan (Telstra 4G, 750 minutes calls & unlimited text) VS $21.43/30 days for Coles Mobile 2GB data plan (Optus 4G, Unlimited calls & text).

    or

$45/30 days for ALDI 8GB data plan (Telstra 4G, 300 international minutes, unlimited calls/txt) VS $42.86/30 days for Coles Mobile 7GB data plan (Optus 4G, 250 international minutes, unlimited calls text). Or the $35/plan with 6GB data and 200 international minutes.

*ALDI $45 increases from 7GB to 8GB in 3 days see deal.

    • +1

$20/30 days for ALDI 1.5GB data plan (Telstra 4G, 750 minutes calls & unlimited text) VS $21.43/30 days for Coles Mobile 2GB data plan (Optus 4G, Unlimited calls & text).

$1.43 for an extra 500GB data is very handy. For me, i haven't ever had any problems with Optus (Amaysim).

I don't see aldi mobile staying on the 30 day plan cycle for long. I'm guessing it will change to 28 days in one of the plan revisions in the next year or so when the leasing contract is renewed with telstra to keep up with the costs

      • +2

Yeah fair point, that extra 500mb might be worth the small extra cost and lesser network for some depending on usage and location.

        • Also, a bonus is if you have access to the 5% off coles cards, you would be paying $19 for 28 days

          Blatchy's Blues Membership

        • @easternculture:

That's true. I purchase Boost Mobile $20 recharges from Coles/Woolworths to use the discounted gift cards and it can potentially help earn reward points for spend $x get x points offers when paying together with groceries.

      • +2

I have no idea why you were modded down, your comment was fair and reasonable.
I don't like Optus network. I had issues in zsydney CBD, Illawarra was almost unusable, as are many country areas.
I am now Telstra based. All those problems disappeared since I switched to Telstra.

With a cost difference so small, I would stay Telstra (Telechoice/Aldi) without hesitation. This is irrespective of my 5% discount at Coles too.

I still wouldn't mod you down though. I modded you up. Polite, honest, helpful? That's an up vote in my book, even if we don't agree :)

        • The opposite with me, I have reception problem since move to Telechoice Telstra. Is your mobile support 700mhz? Mine isn't maybe that's the problem? Live in South West.

        • what's to do in illawara?

      • Mate This looks like the same as Boost Prepaid Unlimited plans, except that this is on Telstra 3G whereas boost is 4G?

    • +1

My big gripe with Aldi is they don't have international roaming unless something has changed since i last looked.

If this offers roaming it would be perfect

      • +1

I agree - I wish Aldi supported roaming.
The above coles offer does support roaming:
"To enable international roaming, you'll need to purchase either the $5 or $15 Extras Credit and call 1300 644 741. Find out about international roaming at optus.com.au/travel."

  • Wow, not bad at all.

  • +3

Would prefer a 30 day expiry but good deal otherwise

  • -6

Does Coles realises that there are other countries in the world where people would like to call ?

    • Well then you could say the same about Telstra….

      • +4

Does Coles realises that there are other countries in the world where people would like to call ?

Pointless, as you can call other countries - you just pay.

Your real point is that they dont provide free calls to countries YOU want to call

and does another carrier do that?

  • I wonder if it is time to give up the grandfathered $26/45 days 5GB from Optus/woolworths? No 4G on that.

    • +5

I wouldn't unless you really need 4G but then haven't been on 3G for ages and can't remember if or what the difference actually feels like.

      • +1

        Browsing it feels like nothing

    • +5

I'm also on that old Woolworths deal still (seriously, what a great plan) and I'm waiting for a plan as good or better than it, and I don't think this is it. It actually direct worry me at all to be on 3G still, I'm never wishing the internet was faster.

      • +2

        Can't agree more.

For my usage, my interest is used for Reddit, messaging apps and some light browsing. When i speed test it i usually get more than 10mbit which is more than enough for my usage

The times when I'm frustrated at it it's due to poor signal. Once the signal picks up it zips along.

    • Still on this too.. haha

  • I'm on Optus they also have 300 mins international and 10g data for $40. the big difference between Telstra and Optus besides price for me was data sharing sims, you can get extra data sim for $5 one off cost, Telstra charge per month, my son uses that sim in his phone for his data usage, so his voice is a cheap plan, and his data comes off my data shared sim, only reason I bought him one of those Chinese phones as they have 2 sims.

    • Where to get this 5 dollars once off sim in Melbourne? I heard not all optics stores know about this.

  • Nah! Would rather go with Aldi than this. Optus versus Telstra and 28 days versus 30 (for now) is a no brainer.

    • No Aldi near us. Can't buy online. Thinking about all the positive reviews of Aldi network connection and pricing…..
      Can you recharge online easy?
Wgats best way for recharge? Auto recharge??

      • No sure it is has changed, but I know you could buy a SIM online a while back & they post it out (this was when there were no stores in WA).

      • Yeah their website is simple to navigate and its pretty straightforward to activate and setup auto recharge online.

  • How are these plans better than Amaysim or vaya OP?

Would love to see your calculations :)

Also, Kogan is on Vodafone and Aldi is on Telstra so you're not comparing like with like IMHO

    • Compare cost + data allowances

You also get 5% off the Coles plans if you recharge using 5% off coles vouchers using Blatchy's Blues Membership

Plus you get full access to all Bands of the Optus 4G plus network.

I have read a few comments on here that Telstra resellers don't get access to the full Telstra 4G Bands.

      • It's hard to assess the real-world impact of Telstra's wholesale coverage restrictions. Comparing Aldi's map with Telstra's in rural areas you often get similar coverage except Telstra is skewed slightly towards higher speeds and the edges of the polygons seem "fuller". For survival-mode in bushland it seems Telstra is still essential.

What's certain is you won't get above 100 Mb/s with ALDI 4g (or Voice over LTE). Considering the 2 GB plan can theoretically be used up in under 3 minutes in ideal conditions I don't think the upper limit is a dealbreaker just yet.

Living in an urban mobile blackspot (as I do) will actually suck in 10 years from now (should 4g data become affordable and nothing new come along).

  • Can global roaming be activated?

    • yes. They have a $10 and $15 roaming pack

    • Yes you can. To enable international roaming, you'll need to purchase either the $5 or $15 Extras Credit and call 1300 644 741. Find out about international roaming at optus.com.au/travel.

  • I'd personally rather pay more for a telstra network provider. Just found coverage on Telstra network to generally be better, especially when travelling. I often can get tesltra reception in places where there's no other network coverage. This might be more noticeable for me then others because I live in regional area. This is a good deal if you want unlimited calls/txts and happy with the data allowance. Even with a 28 day plan, you can still save another $40 a year over ALDI cheapest unlimited call/txt plan.

  • Does the plan allow tethering?
This was always a breaking point for Optus in the past.

  • Where is thr discounted starter kits lol. Im running out

    • +1

Me too. I I've been changing carriers every month.

      • i want more 1 dollar starters or 5 bux is fine lol

    • Think Coles will have Telstra $30 starter kit for $15 next week according to another post.

  • I just have the $40 Optus post paid month to month contract, which includes 8gb data and unlimited calls and mms to anybody, plus 300 min calls to overseas numbers. It's been awesome, and I wouldn't recommend anything else.

    • post paid

Postpaid is a worry for me, you risk going over your voice and data quota and might end up with a unexpected hefty bill

      • +1

Hey eastern, it's actually not too bad. Optus has an app which shows you how much of your quota you've used (data and international calls only since voice and mms is unlimited). You also get a text message from Optus when you reach 50%, 80%, 90% and 100% of your data. If you go over, you get automatically put on the next 1gb for $10 which still isn't too bad if you ask me.

And sorry it's 10gb, not 8gb as I previously mentioned.

  • Good deal but aldi still better, optus coverage is not so great

  • one of my accounts with amaysim was only charged a couple of days ago. if i port my number to coles today (say), will amaysim refund the payment proportionally?

    • No. You don't get any refund for unused days on prepaid service. You do if you're on postpaid (but I don't think Amaysim does postpaid).

      • thanks.

  • +1

    28 day expiry

  • +1

28 day expiry kills it. However, it is still a good value for money.

    • +2

If its good value for money how does 28days kill it? Isnt 28days for $20 same as $21.43 for 30days? You get 2.14gb for that and unlimited calls.

      • +1

Yes, it is good value for money for people who don't mind having Optus over Telstra and paying extra $1.5 month. So 28 day expiry kills the deal(at least for me), but it is still a good deal for many people. Personally, I would like to see Coles including the international call credits,

  • Pity they don't have a pay as you go option. Currently with Yatango for this & can't change to Aldi as I need international roaming.

  • Woolworths mobile have better plans and data rollover!

  • Not sure if this has been discussed before. But can we port our number between Optus and Coles mobile?

    • Yes but it takes longer according to comments here

    • Bought a Coles sim card and was told that I can't port my number from Optus to Coles mobile which is ridiculous. Sent Coles an e-mail and awaiting their response.

You could port to another carrier like Telstra and then port to Coles mobile though!

I hope I am wrong and it can work.

    • Just tried porting from Amaysim to Coles Mobile online. Waited more than 30 mins..nothing happened then re-read the last sentence on final activation page that says this:

      Important information
If you're switching your mobile service from a provider who currently uses the Optus network, once you've received your new SIM card you'll need to contact
Optus on 1300 300 562 to activate your service.

So I rang up (calling from the yet-to-be activated Coles Mobile SIM works) and did a manual activation. Was told then my new service would be activated within the next 15mins - 4 hours. Will report back how long it eventually takes.

      • Gave them a try again today after getting declined again yesterday. All went through fine and the porting took less than 15min. Ported my wife's as well and she didn't have any issues.

        • Did you use online activation or manual activation through the phone?

      • Successfully ported after about 1 hour.

  • No Thanks. 28 days is a bummer. My Kogan 3XL 90 days plan is cheaper. I paid $63 for 90 days Unlimited with 3 GB Data for the same Optus network.

    • +4

      for the same Optus network.

Kogan Mobile is using the Vodafone network.

    • Unfortunately not, kogan uses Vodafone. Which is an inferior network in my experience.

      • I had Amaysim before that uses Optus 4G and that was shit network plus it started 28 days plans. Fed up, I joined Kogan 4G and now no call drops and happy.

        • I use telstra. Tried Vodafone and couldn't even get 4g where I live. Optus and Telstra are the only ones to offer a good 4g network in the regional areas. When I travel always found Telstra to be considerably best follow by Optus and vodafone pretty much useless outside capital cities. You get what you pay for, hence why vodafone can offer cheaper rates. For some people vodafone will be their best choice, if you need greater coverage than Telstra are the best.

    • Isn't it $79.95 for 90 days on the Medium/3XL plan? Or was your $63 a special offer?

      • +1

I recharged my Unlimited 3XL/90 days plan again after earlier 3 months expired, last week and it was $63. It might have been a special price. I am not sure.

  • -4

Philippines not included in international calls no deal for me.

    • +1

Syria not included in international calls no deal for me too.

      • +1

They'd better not be blocking Liechtenstein either… :/

  • +2

Not saying this is better or worse than Amaysim, but all the same, it's good to see Amaysim being dethroned as Ozbargain king with Woolworths, Aldi, Coles etc. becoming more and more competetive

  • +2

The 28 days thing stops this from being competitive for me. I top up my prepaid credit 4 times a year… 90days expiry. Sure, I don't get 2Gb quota (100Mb for times when I NEED mobile data, not when I want it), and I'm in a position to make the most of the free virgin to virgin calls/sms. But it only costs me $19 every 90 days. Can put my money towards other things like my mortgage, Humble Bundles, and holidays.

  • 28 Day expiry, makes it non bargain. Vaya is cheaper on 12 month plan http://www.vaya.net.au/?option=Mobile

    • Vaya is cheaper on 12 month plan

This deal is month to month plan. Your comparing apples to oranges.

Vaya month to month plan is $22. Coles is $20 or $19.50 using discounted Coles cards

      • +1

Its not a month, its 28 days, so you technically paying for 13 months a year

        • +1

and using EC's info, I thought you might like me to do the math for you

          22X12 = 264
          20X13 = 260
even if you cant get 5% off

Yep you pay 13 times a year but pay less for the privilege

And to me $4 off is more of a bargain than not.

        • @RockyRaccoon: $20 a month, or $14.50 a month if you only need 1GB of data

        • Most times any deal is cheaper if you want to sign up for a contract.

Sign up for 2 years and you will save more. However what happens in 3 months time when a better deal is offered. You are stuck paying more.

And sign up for 500mb you will save more. So the $14.50 is a pointless point. My wifes plan is cheaper than that but she gets no data

Compare like with like. Hell you've been here at Ozbargain long enough to know that. 😷

        • @RockyRaccoon: So your wife's plan is more a bargain as well

        • @asa79: You can lead a horse to water but you cant make it drink. Guess you are a telco's dream 😷

My fathers got the bargain of the century, he only pays $5 a year as we call him

  • How long is this deal available for? Is it hard to change from Vodafone?

  • As soon as I see its Optus no deal. Poorest reception at my place with no signal or just one block

  • Why bother with this? Check this out? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/264599 I've never had issues with Virgin, so since my 2 year $30 plan was about to end, I swapped to this.
