Canberra screening - was lit! Showed our printed 2xfree pass to the ticket rippers and they opened the little bollard rope thing to let us past the short line of people with paid tickets. The guy said to look for free gifts on the seats. Despite 'the screening being now full' as per the iconic site, there were about 5 other people as we got inside ~6:10. It looked like one or two of the first people there were already scouring the seats. I quickly found one gift card on a seat in the front middle right and my friend another one further left in the same row. After taking our choice of just about any seats at the center of the very back row we noticed that a message advising of the hidden-ish gifts was projected on the screen also. It said there were 7 of them hidden around and to look. Not bad for getting there early.

As for the movie it was really good. Maybe 15ish people in the cinema total. It was the Hoyts Xtremescreen cinema with controllable reclining chairs with enough elbow room on each rest between them, pretty relaxing. I went in expecting the worst and that it probably would have been a waste of time of a movie. There were no long musical numbers like I was dreading and it is genuinely funny and original in my opinion. You won't even hear so much as 30 seconds of Equality Street. Not sure if everyone will like it. It's not being well received on imdb and rotten tomatoes obviously. Sydney Morning Herald by-lined it with 'Gervais hits rock bottom with cringeworthy Brent feature'. That's so harsh, it's a good movie but that review is correct in that a lot of the humor is of the cringing-at-Brent kind. If you truly like the Brent character from the Office then Life on the Road is the character's honest, logical and genuinely funny conclusion. I felt that in no way was he resting on his laurels and ripping off on the exact same type of humour from the original Office. This is a spiritual successor justified to be made. I liked most of Extras, not as much as The Office. I didn't like Life is Too Short, really couldn't handle Derek, and I really liked Hello Ladies. I would say the movie stands with The Office and Hello Ladies and is head and shoulders better than Extras. Maybe that makes sense to someone. Most of the rest of the crowd seemed to laugh a fair few times during the movie, although no hysterics or big laughs but a good comedy beat that rarely misses - if you're into it at all.

    • Thanks for the review & enjoy your gift 🎁

I couldn't make the Brisbane screening, but don't think I would have liked Gervais‘s humour that much - based on your comparisons. Humour is a personal taste & I find some of his work "cringeworthy".
