with everyone buying QFF on the Classifieds forum for roughly 1c per point how is this a bargain, $62K points = $620, i never really understood how anyone could trade points in for goods especially when the goods being traded are overpriced.

    • +6

Agree. Gift card is not a good way to spend FF points so the price listed not reflective of actual value of the points.

      • +1

I wonder if you come up with a better way (value) to buy a QC 35. Will be much appreciated by the OZbargain community..

        • +2

If you are happy to spend 62000 points on some QC35, great. Valuing based on the gift card value is somewhat flawed as gift cards are not great value either.

I feel there is much better value to be had using them for flights for example.

        • +1

They sell on ebay for about $430.

    • Where?! I have 230k points to cash out!

      • +3

Be careful though - Qantas has been cracking down on people transferring points to non-family members (quick google search and you'll find example eg http://thepointsteam.com/2016/05/09/never-buy-sell-frequent-…). Worse case, both people could have their memberships cancelled and lose all their points…..

        • Just so risky, I'd cry if I lost my Qantas FF membership. Bye bye Gold if that was to happen.

      • I recently redeemed a one way business class flight BNE -> LHR for 132k QFF points + $635 in taxes flying emirates (qantas code share)

    • +1

Trading QFF points on classified is not for everyone and might not be considered a deal..
But i do agree it is better if you find a genuine seller/ buyer…

Edit: Just glanced through the T&C after PlasticSpaceman comment..
Trading QFF points breaches T&C and may result in suspension / termination of membership

  • I feel a point is roughly worth 1c as others have noted so not a real good deal IMO. Some items are much better value to use points on (like flights).

  • Bad use of points, I only have just under 500K left 😃.

  • yeah it might be better to use the points towards flights, but only if you can build up enough for J or F. If you've got a family and mortgage then possibly saving some cash takes a higher priority than the long struggle to get 1M points to take the family to europe in J.

i used points for the QC25 when QF was discounting the number of points by 30%. 1c a point is Ok when you're literally getting 100K of them free due to signup bonuses.

You don't need to book flights in business or first to make good use of them. 64k points plus some taxes (fairly low for domestic) can do Brisbane to Sydney return for a family of 4 which is generally going to cost a fair chunk more than $375.

      • considering the headphones are $440 as the best price in Australia this deal gives you around 0.7c per point.

not great, but prob comparable to using for a domestic Y fare.

I've been able to get around 3C value a few times when flights from bali have been expensive and reward seats still available.

I buy miles at 2.5c and happy witht he value when compared to paying for a J or F flight.

value is in the eye of the beholder.

I never fly with Qantas, out of curiosity I just checked how much point I can use for a return flight.

    https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/do/dyns/InitialPointsRedeemed

Melbounne -> Hong kong return = 56,000 points

I used 37,350 for a QC20i last year, did not regret until now…

Is this headphone worth more than a return flight to Hong Kong, IMO definitely not…

    • Yep although that is the Classic reward "price" though so you would have to pay taxes on top of that.

37k points though is about right for a redemption of a $300-400 product for me. You'll almost always get better value from a flight redemption though.

    • +3

      you left out 250$ taxes

  • Say you dnt have points left, can you buy it cash at this price?

    • No. Best has been about $420. If you could it would be a very good price for a new product.

  • Well I just looked at it. You need 29,020 points + 335.19 to get BOSE QC35….Which turns out to be….364.21…..if you value it at 0.01 cents per points…There you go..

    • Yes the points + pay deals can show how bad a value redeeming for goods is.

e.g. A Dyson V6 at full points is about 60k of points + $600 yet you can buy one with no points for about $600.

      NB: In terms of flight points it's about $0.01 = 1c = 1 point. Not 0.01c

  • Meh, I just bought it with the code. It turns out to be $284.90 + 24,667 points. Since, I am too poor to fly so I might as well get some audio gears for an audiophile….

  • Wow, how did the mods let this title pass? Surely you can't list something in $ by some arbitrary conversion formula, title really should just say 61,117 points.

    • Changed the title mate… :)
      Thanks

  • im no expert but I use my points for business class trips

for example, a economy ticket might cost 128k points at $1500 for exampe
while a 256k points for a business class at $6500 makes my points worth a hell of a lot more than the 1c per point

I think first class might even be better value, however, if I did 1st class return id only have enough for like 4 trips :(

id rather do 6-7 business class

    • how do yo get $1500 worth ticket for 128k pts?
      Just checked MEL-Heathrow (economy)on sale for $1542 and its 170700 points… (110pts/$)
Am i missing something? Well i dont travel much and certainly dont use Qantas if I pay..

      • It has to be classic rewards. Return Syd/Mel to London is 128k last I checked. The any ticket points redemption is similar value to Qantas store like this deal (i.e. much worse value)

        • Oh yes MEL to London is 120K through classic rewards + Taxes, fees and carrier charges payable to Qantas will apply to your booking and are shown on the Check page.

Whats the tax and other charges would be for this scenario?

Sorry i dont have enough points to check that myself :)

    • for example, a economy ticket might cost 128k points at $1500 for exampe
while a 256k points for a business class at $6500 makes my points worth a hell of a lot more than the 1c per point

I find it not very useful to equate price with value for business class. It implies that a business class is more than twice as good as an economy class flight, just because that's how much Qantas decides to charge for it.

I would definitely much rather have 4 economy flights than 2 business flights.
I know, flying long haul sucks and in economy even more so, but how can one trip with somewhat less annoying flights be better than 2 trips?

Personally, I found I get most value for points in domestic flights, where fees are really low.

      • years ago I used to think like you,

id rather much do 3 economy trips than pay for a business class trip, and spend more on my holiday,

or why not send me and a partner vs myself business class
        I still think like this,

unfortunately, I am not wealthy enogh to afford business or first class,

so using my points is my reward to myself and I now do business class to europe and USA whenever I go.
its like a huge reward to myself,
however I only do business class for long haul and always travel jetstar sale fares for asia

  • +1

    Only use with domestic flight.

    • Melb-Perth on sale for $570 or 73K pts (128/$)

      • +1

I spent 15k pts plus $50 for SYD-MEL return. I think it is a good used.

      • wow 73k melb to perth, that doesn't seem very good. Its around 56,000 points to go from Melb-Hong Kong compared to $700-1200 depending on when you fly.

Redeeming directly (e.g. not via upgrade) Business Class sweetens the deal even more, double the points of economy but usually the flight prices are like 3x if you purchase business class tickets.
