Why do you guys purchase this useless sim card?

    • +1

      Because it's free:)

  • +4

WARNING: I bought a bunch of these to receive SMS (ages ago), and they only received SMS's for the first day or so, then they get deactivated (I stopped the activation page when it asks for credit card details).
Months later, I get called by a call center to ask whether I am going to use Kogan Mobile.

    YOU WILL GET CALLED
Make sure when you activate/purchase these sims,
DO NOT PUT IN YOUR PRIMARY NUMBER

Please update post with this warning OP!

From memory, I was able to port a Kogan sim (half-activated, no payment made) into Amaysim (when they had that 5GB deal on).
So there is hope for using these as a intermediary sim for porting in and out.
If anyone attempts this, please report back!

  • Very tempting as you'd expect from a bottom-feeder…. but how long will this service last? Last time, customers were left high & dry when the rug was pulled from underneath!!! So as always…. "buyer beware"

      This might help you https://help.koganmobile.com.au/hc/en-au/articles/206805847-…

Not sure what you mean by customers were left high and dry though. Once they started running into issues with their provider I just ported out.

      • few years ago when service was pulled! lots of hassle for customers… i know someone who pre-purchased 12GB for 12 months use just before it happened..

        • Yes I know the previous service plans were dropped. I stated above I ported out at that time. The link also explains what is different. Customers were warned when the issues started occurring and that is when I ported out. Unless they had issues getting a pro-rata refund, I don't see the issue. Only yesterday Kogan approved a refund request from me as they could not offer a replacement for my LG G4. So I personally have had no issues with them.

… i know someone who pre-purchased 12GB for 12 months use just before it happened..

My wife did, & got a full refund without even asking. Ported out to Woollies, no drama, no harm, no foul. Why do people pretend that Kogan Mobile dudded its customers? It never happened.

        • @4agte:
Got an email today offering an Samsimg Galaxy A8 as an replacemnt for my G4. Did you get this offer?
I would prefer a refund over an A8

        • @Regie69:

I was offered the same inferior phone. I declined it for that reason. They also offered twice a LG G4 but didn't hold them. They were sold before I accepted them. Instead of accepting store credit I asked for a refund under Australian Consumer Law as they could not replace it for a like for like product. I'm just waiting for my refund now

        • @4agte: they also offered me the LG G4 which was supposed to be on its way. Im going to go for refund

        • +1

          @Regie69:

Definitely get a refund if you can. I didn't want to temp another G4 again. They didn't make any fuss when I asked but can't be sure how you will go

My email said "Under Australia Consumer Law I would now like to exercise my rights for a refund. Please let me know what info you need to give me refund"

          Good luck

  • Do we need to pay for activation? OR it asks for any CC details or so for activation?
Just want to keep it handy to receive SMS.

  • I've ported from Amaysim to Kogan successfully but am having trouble porting back to Amaysim. Does anyone who has successfully done this have any idea how to fix this? FWIW, there is no means of payment attached to the Kogan card and I've tried both postpaid and prepaid options when (unsuccessfully) porting back to Amaysim. Cheers

  • Got my sims today. Looks like you must recharge in the last step of activation. Anyone had success?

    • +1

Oh snap! If you go through registration but bail out on the payment step the sim still activates :)

      • +1

Oh yeah? Well the jerk store called, they're running outta you!

      • Does it? I got sent an email but I still get no service when I install the sim card into my phone.

        • Dunno, it worked for me after the email, maybe give it a day

      • confirmed working if you don't proceed with payment. free burrito.

        • For the first day, try calling the number or texting the next!
Quick, get your verification codes all done in one day!

  • Got mine today. Thanks!

  • +3

In case I've raised doubts in anyone's mind, I can now confirm that I have now successfully ported back to Amaysim. I'm not sure why it failed to port in the first place tho but doing it a day later worked.

    • So you ported to Kogan without paying and successfully switched to Amaysim?

If so, that confirms the main question people had but the deal's interest has since fizzled.

      • +2

Yes, that's right. I (successfully) ported from Amaysim to Kogan without supplying my cc details. Unfortunately, the port back to Amaysim wasn't so smooth. I still don't know why it initially failed - I tried a couple of times in a short space of time. It was only when I tried a day later that it worked.

Luckily I could receive calls and texts during the time I was marooned on Kogan. It made for an anxious day tho. I hope it goes more smoothly next time. If not, I'll have to look at getting a different brand's SIM for the temporary port.

      • For anyone that is using this sim to port in and out - don't… I tried yes the sim activates (without paying) but there is a problem when you try to port out. You need to call Kogan and ask why the port fails, they will do something and then try the port again next day.

        • Second that. Ported to Kogan, no problem. Tried to port out, well a couple of days later and over a weekend and a number of phone calls between Kogan and Optus. Don't bother. Just use them for your free burritos. They said the number was registered but not active. I guess because I didn't pay anything. Better off paying $2 for a blank sim.

  • i signed up for the 5gb plan + 2gb bonus for 3 months when the last offer was out, just got a text saying that they've upgraded their plan and I've got a 3gb bonus. Checked my balance and my total data for the month is 10gb. not bad for $25 pm for 3 months!

  • Ive got service on my phone but it won't receive any text messages or calls. Is that normal

  • +2

Anyone know if you can still activate without recharging on their plan? Seems like they may have made some changes. Thanks

  • Did you guys get a porting sms or email confirmation form Kogan? I went through the site and skip/closed the payment page after. How long did it take the porting to happen?

    • the Kogan sims are useless now .. they've close the loop hole.
