  • Thanks for the great deals. I'm very happy with the HP ML10v2 I picked up from you guys earlier this week!

    • no problem :)

      Glad to hear!

    • Same here, tracking number should have been provided without asking for it but other than that I'm happy with mine as well.

  • Wouldnt it be better to advertise on Monday when you have stock?

    • +5

there is stock in the warehouse already, just not the store.

good deal! Anyone know what's the different between MLC and TLC?

    • +5

Multi Layer Cell vs Triple Layer Cell flash
The fastest drives are single layer, then dual (multi) layer, then triple, but the cost per GB is vastly cheaper with more layers.
If you want a better explanation i recommend you check out storage rfeview

      • Thank you

        • very welcome

      The shiny1's comment here. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/260120

      • That Mushkin (MLC) is down to $334.28AUD or $254.93USD delivered atm. Not as cheap as $305AUD though.

      • Looks like do not buy TLC
But most of new models using TLC
        Uh, which one is better?

        • +1

manufacturers were hitting physical limits as they made bigger memory , the number of cells on a water became and issue and as the tracks got smaller the cells wouldn't retain data as long. them they went to mult layer so they could make the tracks bigger, etc.

TLC is where the market is going as it scales well per $ and allows them to make larger, even crucial is making TLC now.

SLC is used as a cache or in very high end data centre drives due to costs.

        • 3D NAND is the go ahead tech - have a look at just how thoroughly the samsung 850 evo obliterates the TLC competition. Planar TLC will disappear into obscurity as 3d takes over.

Which model? the near universal advice is the 850 evo in this price range.

        • @garage sale: not too much price difference between MLC and TLC, so some people still prefer to buy old model MLC SSDs. But the market is going to TLC. I think the current TLC is more reliable than 2 years ago. It will work more than 5 years with normal use which is not too hwavy. The big trouble is the lost data on die SSD.

        • @mycosys: how's the Kingston models? Is it on 3D NAND?

        • @sydracing: they are all pretty budget afaik, tho sandisk has some nice ones. ATM Samsung is pretty much the value king. (I stand to be corrected)
this may be a clue as to why the 540s is clearing though - intel is introducing a new line based on its own 3d NAND, rather than hynix's, likely faster and possibly as cheap as the samsung

Hm, this review isn't exactly glowing, for the 480gb model at least. http://www.anandtech.com/show/10432/the-intel-ssd-540s-480gb…

"The current retail pricing of the Intel SSD 540s makes my recommendation quite simple: don't buy."

      Dayam.

  • -1

    $170 for 480GB and $360 for 1TB ?????

    • sorry, fixed to 350 for you - typo!

  • Is this Intel's latest and best SATA SSD? I haven't kept up with their model revisions.

    • +5

The 730 series was the best as far as consumer grade Intel SATA SSD's. They had a skull on the exterior of the drive but I think they moved the 700 series to PCIe to compete against the Samsung 950 PCIe and Kingston Predator etc.
Their top SATA SSD's are the S3510 series which are recommended for servers.

    • +2

It is Intel's latest of the cheapest.

      • And worst

    • NO, the latest offering for consumer level is the awesomely priced P600 series, the 256G version sells in Australia atm at $139

  • Which controller does it use? Do dud controllers (sandforce - high failure rate) exist these days?

    • According to Anandtech it uses Silicon Motion's new SM2258 controller and SK Hynix 16nm TLC NAND.

      • 16nm TLC ….. the idea of TLC was so they could make tracks bigger again so data is retained longer.

        • What do you mean by "data is retained longer"?

This one is better according to reviews. Better yet get the Samsung 850 Evo for $20 more.

850EVO.. that workhorse still yet to be dethroned?

  • 1TB, good price & reviews for those who want/need it.

    Looking at amazon, newegg, PLE.

I was going to purchasing as Intel have 5 year warranty but then saw these comments about Warehouse1 http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2289733

    • +1

No problems with them. Order heaps of stuff, and no issues to date.

  • How do these 540s compare to say the 520. Or the best sad atm?
