Probably worth it for that fancy controller, which are still going for a packet separately.

If I buy the One S to replace my perfectly fine One, the wife will notice. But, if I buy this…

    • +17

Mine noticed the controller lol :/

      • +1

What has this world come to? :)

        • +3

It's all the console companies fault for allowing Netflix access. Before Netflix my mum didn't know what a playstation controller even was.

  • +2

Great deal. Love the Elite controller.

If you don't want to do 4K movies I'd probably get this for the SSHD if I was in the market.

    • +2

I bought one from EB at this price during their last sale. Much better value than the new S IMH. Load times are great and the controller is absolutely amazing for Forza 6.

  • I bought the Elite controller seperately for 175 posted from Mightyape so minus that the console itself is probably worth 200. Great price for a SSHD console since the loading would, technically speaking, faster than the standard or even the new S model. Wish I would grab it now instead of paying 500 for the normal 1TB last year Christmas from EB.

  • Nice one. Had been debating whether to pick it up at JB Hifi for $449, but saw that just of this week it's no longer available on their site.

Note that if you want to pay anything other than direct deposit, they want a 2% surcharge for credit and 2.5% surcharge for PayPal.

  • Page now inactive?

    • Changed the link, it's still listed on their site :)

If the Elite controller had bluetooth and audio jack I'd get this. But nope, gotta wait for the bluetooth elite.

    • It does have the audio jack.

      • +1

Oh. Well, it still needs bluetooth.

    • +1

      It has an audio jack.

You can buy a wireless dongle for ~$40 or less (I paid $31 new) if you want to use it on PC (Windows 10 only). Half price or less if you manage to grab a secondhand one - these have no moving parts. The wireless connection is lower latency than Bluetooth.

But you cannot use it with BT devices AFAIK.

      • The dongle is unfortunately too big to use on a laptop, and doesn't work on Mac.

  • +1

Don't think, buy. The controller and SSHD are worth the asking price.

  • Would personally wait until the PS meeting if your looking for a value console. Rumours are the PS4slim will be significantly cheaper than current consoles.

    • +2

But you cant play forza on a ps4

      • +1

Yes but you can on a PC, with much better quality settings. I literally don't see the point of owning a one anymore

        • Yeah i'm tempted but Halo 5 was underwhelming, Master Chief Collection has constant issues with multiplayer playlists even to this day, the new Forza set in Australia will be available on PC. The only reason I can see for XB1 is for the new Gears of War or the launch title I always wanted to play Sunset Overdrive. I'm not sure how to justify this to myself since I want that sexy controller haha

  • +2

Remember that the controller that comes with this console has a RRP of $199, is generally not widely available at most retailers, and is very rarely on sale. That and the 1TB SHD makes me think this is a pretty good deal for me, since ive been looking to buy an elite controller anyway.

However if you're after the newest, the Xbox S is significantly smaller with a much better design. But give it another year and we'll be likely to have Scorpio as well.

  • Has anyone purchased from Budget PC?? Any good guy? So tempted…. Thanks.

    • Got hard drive from them, not bad.

  • The S version of the xbox one is just a gimmick, i would much rather this elite console.

    • +9

4K video playback and upscaler, HDR, smaller unit with internal power supply and lower power usage. These are all good features if you have need for them. A gimmick would be a cup holder.

      • All Xbox Ones already have a cup holder. It's called the BluRay tray.

        • I remember that joke from many years ago on PC… there was a cup holder program.. and it popped out the CD tray. :)

  • Need an Xbox One before Oct.

One S, Elite or On hold. What do you think?

    • +3

This deal with the Elite for the sexy controller and 1TB SSHD, can't beat that value unless you go for a second hand sale.

      • Hands down the elite

    • If you have a 4k tv, I'd get the One S. If you don't, and don't plan on getting one anytime soon, I'd get the Elite.

  • this looks like good deal..
what are pros vs cons of this over the new one s ?
im getting a new xbox for kids for xmass so not sure which one to get as the current 360 needs upgrading.
do i wait for xmass sales or grab one of these ….

    • Pro of this:
      - SSHD, so faster UI and loading of 1-2 games
      - The controller, RRP$199.
      - Probably quieter?

      Cons:
      - No 4K bluray playback, or 4K output at all.
      - No internal power supply
      - Is bigger.
      - Controller is gen2, not gen3. Gen3 has BT, and revamped shoulder buttons and sticks apparently.

Edit: Why are you looking at Xbox One? PS4 has way more exclusives, is more 'powerful' for graphics, is the console of choice, etc.
Edit2: My genuine recommendation: buy a PS4 Slim when it will release (announcement expected Sept 7). Alternatively, buy an Xbox One S near Xmas - I predict prices will TANK.

      • thx for reply.
reason for xbox over ps was we have xbox now..
        no real loyalty to either….
just got them the aldi 4ktv for their new bedroom im building as teenagers retreet so blueray 4k is prob a good advantage as saves me buying another device…
boys soccer mad so fifa and driving games are ones he favours atm.. is ps better on these type games ?

        • +1

FIFA is on both, driving games you have some exclusives like Forza on Xbox, though Gran Turismo wil lcome to PlayStation sometime. Rest of the big driving games are either on both consoles, or some only on PS4 (Driveclub).

PS4 Slim doesn't have 4K bluray, that'll be their other console - also expected to be announced Sept 7. I guess at this stage, yes Xbone S is looking good, even if for the 4K. Perhaps wait a week and see what Sony announces?

Make sure to get a cheap soundbar at least for that tv! :)

        • +1

Thing to note as well is that this is $100 cheaper than the equivalent S model, albeit without any games bundled. So while comparisons are being made on a head-to-head basis, don't forget that $100 difference :)

Sure the S is smaller, and has 4K video playback, but you also have to think about how often you'll use that 4K video playback for now ;) Will you justify spending the extra for 4K discs?

        • +2

Another advantage of the Xbox One is the backwards compatibility of old games. Note that not all games are supported, but there's a good variety there (check a list).

If your kids still play their old games (or want to) and if you have a Xbox Live Gold subscription there's a pretty good variety of back catalog available.

        • +2

          @IsometricBacon:

Thinking more on this, probably the best console for a teenager would likely be the console that all their friends have - i.e. so they can all play online together.

        • +2

          @IsometricBacon:

That'd be the thing :) Plus if they're already an Xbox house, they might not want to go to Playstation

Also, Xbox Live Gold - Get free games each month :) PS has PS+, but I believe the price is due to go up

Depending on what type of games the kids play, 12 months EA Access @ $39 is a worthwhile investment

        [@StickMan]
        Why Xbox? I can think of a few reasons;

        1. Xbox console exclusives (Halo, Gears, Forza, Quantum Break etc., and killer Indies like Inside)
        2. 360 Backward compatibility
        3. Gold subscription service is great value because of the free games they offer
        4. Xbox Play Anywhere
        5. Xbox Live service
        6. Phil Spencer. Obviously great at PR, but the brand is now in good hands.
    • +1

      Pros:
Much faster hard drive, means games will load faster.
'Pro' Controller - retails for $199 itself for just the controller.
      Cons:
This is the 'Older' model Xbox - They just released the new Xbox One S.
The S model is much smaller and more compact than this one.
The S model's controller has bluetooth which means you can use it on a PC without the use of a $30 adapter.
The S model can output at 4K for Blu-Ray videos (not games)

Honestly, this one is more for 'pro gamers' - most people don't really had the need or can justify a $200 fancy controller. I'd imagine for your kids it'd probably be better to have the 'new one' which has some great deals around with some additional games thrown in as well.

If you're after cheap, I'm sure you can find original 'bundles' of the old Xbox One (not Elite model) going for cheap as they are phasing it out for the model S.

The S is also very competitively priced and has some good bundles at the moment. As we reach Xmas, I'm sure we'll see even more bundles, presumably around the same price but with many games thrown in as part of the deal.

  • People state the SSHD improves loading speeds, but by how much?

Reason I ask is that going from 500GB to 1 TB already gives a significant improvement in performance, if you had a decent 2TB mechanical HDD I suspect it would be even faster.

    • +1

tl;dr: larger capacity HDD doesn't improve performance.

..I lie. Spinning platter HDD's mean that stuff on outside edge can be streamed faster than the stuff on inside edge. So the fuller the drive is, the slower the performance is. However, this is baaaarely going to be noticeable, especially in a console. The seek time will be the most imporant.

The SSHD means it has a SSD cache. That's big enough for perhaps most of the OS, and a couple bits of 1-3 games. Due to this, UI and a couple games will be snappier.

  • Dead link 404, looks like all GONE!

  • thx for all the comments guys …
we do have a shedload of xbox 360 games but if another platform was better they can always use the 360 in loungroom instead of new game system in their big bedroom.
i jokingly tell mrs reason im making this awesome room is its my man cave once we kick kids out lol……
whats cost difference between playing xbox - ps online ?
i will find out what most of their mates are using and looks like this will help decide which platform to use …

    • Real man caves have both ps4 and xbox
