They were advertising it over the store PA system so they must be trying to clear it.
Why? Stores have finite storage space and the inability to precisely predict the future. They probably require space for items that have a higher margin.

It might be on sale due to the expiry date, my local BigW had 1.25L Coke for 51c each as it was only few days away from expiry, still perfectly fine. I thought might have been a bit flat but it worked out ok
