Spoke to aldi today and she said it isn't the model number that was used in the original post and the catalogue does not show one so I have taken it out to avoid confusion.

Were only 8 at the store. All gone immediately.
I got one - had to run to get it!

  • +3

There were about 20 at the Maroochydore Aldi. Was a massive line to get in the door. I was there about 20min before opening.

Picked up the $100 saw bench too.

    Will try the TV tonight.

    Model number is atvu65-0916

Got one at Canterbury store. There is a pallet with around 10 left.

In the aldi in joondalup, Perth now and they have at least 15 left and it's 10:30am

Yay…..first in line and I snagged one from Aldi Engadine. Just replaced…..believe it or not…..my $6500 NEC 42 inch HD plasma, which never missed a beat after 25000 hrs of viewing….notone dead pixel. Plugged in,mturned on tuned in….not an issue. Standard def fta looks as average as I was expecting. Sound us ordinary as I was expecting. Watched some 1080P video via my PS3, and plugged the sound into my amp……..bloody great to my eyes. Cant wait to see some 4K content, should be amazing. If this thing doesnt crap itself in short time, it should prove to be the bargain of the year. Did I mention that going from 42 inches to 65 inches is literally a life changing experience :)

  • Anybody been to the store in Fortitude Valley ??

    • +1

To answer my own question. I just picked one up. There is about 8 left in store up the back near the fresh food. Dragged it to the car. haha

    Got the TV. Working great.

However can't seem to change the volume? Volume button on the remote doesn't work and volume button the tv doesn't work either. I have to do it manually through the settings.

    • Remote worked fine out of the box for me.

    • Same! This is only the case when I have my computer speakers plugged in via the headphone jack on the back. The light still flickers on the IR receiver to indicate remote control signal is being received, but volume just won't change. And volume graphic doesn't appear on screen. Likewise with volume button on TV. Won't work.

When I pull out the plug then volume control works as per normal… hope this is a fault and not a "feature". Can anyone shed more info on this?

Got one at 3pm in Aldi Gungahlin. Didn't even expect to get one and just went to Aldi for my weekend shopping, but then there were at least 10 left on a pallet.

    Some initial impressions:
I am pleasantly surprised. On my gtx1080, I can select YCBR444 at 4k at 60hz. The TV displays full 4:4:4. There are some weird interference artifacts when displaying those test images though, consistent with cheap controller boards. But since this is an extreme edge case, it's probably alright.
Watched some sample 4k footage which looked great at 60Hz.

On a side note: The TV in its box just fit into a Toyota Corolla. Obviously couldn't close the hatch, but nothing some rope couldn't fix. After reading the old threads I was worried I would have to call a maxi taxi.

    • A young guy was standing back watching my Honda Jazz swallow this tv. Same deal, the hatch wouldnt close, but close enough. Needless to say…..he was impressed. Just watcing the league on 90 HD, and looks damn fine. The remote feels good in the hand and decent quality as well.

  • +2

The tv is outstanding and beyond expectation, even the sound is not too bad.

Just wondering anyone know how to turn off the tv volume? Need to turn it off for full soundbar experience;)

    • +1

I think you'd be able to achieve that using SPDIF pass through with the TV speakers muted/set to low.

      • Thanks for the input tren but I'm using the sonos soundbar and it uses the same tv remote so if I mute it it will mute the soundbar as well

        • Cheap electronics often share the same remote codes…

In this case, could be a simple solution worth a try, until better solution found.

Just turn soundbar off so soundbar won't receive remote signal & turn volume all the way down on TV rather than mute it. Turn soundbar on. Sound should now only come from Soundbar.

Control using volume & mute on soundbar (but volume may change sound on TV if remote code is same). Using mute on soundbar won't then turn TV sound on & mute on TV remote will mute soundbar.

Awesome TV. The UI is extremely responsive and well designed. The remote is simple, light and imo, the perfect size. Can't go wrong for $800. I can't wait to play some UHD content.

    • Agreed. Deal of the year.

    • Agreed. The remote is well designed.

  • I went into my local at 8:15 and there were still 3 just sitting there.

  • For anyone interested in 'Smart TV' functions, I'd recommend one of these http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/122117233964?_trksid=p2060353.m27…

Supports SPDIF pass through and also uses the new S912 chipset. Plenty of power and well priced.

    • Does it enable HDR?

      • Not sure, I think that's a panel capability.

  • two pallets still at Airport west (Vic) at 315pm today

  • So many left at Aldi Macquarie

  • Whats the warranty period on this tv

    • 1 year manufacturers

  • I have fiddled around with the service menu (go to menu, press 1147) a bit and am super happy now :)

On HDMI, text looked overly sharp, like it was artificially sharpened. Black lines or characters would have a white halo around them. Obviously this makes the image "pop", but is far from what I want when actually watching something.

In the service menu, you have the option to change sharpness on the hdmi input, which is greyed out in the normal menu. I changed it to 25 (down from 50) and the image now looks great. There are also many many options for color balance and even color and brightness curves. Maybe one day I'll actually color calibrate it :).

But be super careful with other settings, as you can probably brick the TV.

    • Why did you decrease the sharpness… shouldn't you increase instead to get a better image?

      • where text shows nasty artefacts around the edges, decreasing sharpness actually makes the test look nicer and takes away the artefacts. Similarly, on a source that's lower res than the TV is capable of, turning the sharpness down will decrease the blocky appearance of a crappy source

      • default sharpness setting is over-sharpening the image. At 25 the picture looks much closer to the source.

  • Any motion blur?

    Cheers
    Jake

    • I havent noticed any. Was watching league on 90 hd……looked great.

      • Cool cheers Fundies.

  • None left in any of my local Alldis yesterday, surprised to see people still finding stock. Anybody see any anywhere West of Melbourne? Willing to travel.

3 left at aldi tarneit as of 10.45am sunday..

      • Mate, I owe you a beer!
As of 11.15am, 2 left in Aldi Tarneit!

        • +1

hahaha.. no worries.. glad you found one.. whereabouts are you? I'm about 5 min drive away from the tarneit store so went for a quick look this morning.. however, upon seeing how large the box is, i realised that it's unsuitable for a daily driver computer screen … hehe

        • @Vladdo: Point Cook, moving to Hoppers next week so Tarneit is just up the road! Delighted with this so I do owe you one.
Yeah, just a little big for a computer screen. 63inch is the max for that! :)

        • @aliocroc: if tarneit didn't have any, I was going to go to point cook.. I currently have a 40" 4k + 27" 1080p screen so was thinking of consolidating the 2.. the width is good but i think it's the height that would prove problematic..

        • @Vladdo: Yeah, you'd struggle on a complete picture with that. Better off a complete solution and this looks decent. Just managed to fit it in the car! Have asked the guy with the review for the settings he used so we'll see.

Point Cook sold out by 10am yesterday morning, of this and the power washer!! Surprised Tarneit didnt too to be honest! Great heads up so serious kudos to you.

Also, a review of this model, purchased yesterday and compared with an $8k LG
    http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2016/09/is-aldis-799-65-inch-4k-tv…

    • +1

      Summary: impressive after changing settings

      Out of the box…
for the $799 price Aldi’s screen was good enough: “You’ll get used to this. And for the price, it’ll be normal. It’s adequate.”

      After changing screen settings…
became very, very impressed with its performance.

you can get a surprisingly good picture from a budget telly … this Aldi TV is very much punching above its weight.

But… doesn’t have any inbuilt apps — there’s no Netflix or Stan or Foxtel Play or YouTube for you to load up via the remote.

For another $50 for a Chromecast gets you the best and most powerful Smart TV system you can buy right now, as long as you have a smartphone handy to throw content to it with.

      Compared with a $8999 OLED LG EF950T.

      • Bargain of the year!

Anyone knows of the setting in the review above?

        • +3

I'm gonna message the guy and ask him to provide. Will reply on here with details if I get them.

        • Yes need the settings as well

        • @aliocroc: Any reply yet?

        • +1

@JakeTheMuSS: Nothing, and I'm not the only one to ask. Will keep at him. He briefly describes it in the article so that's all we have to go on for now-
"Throwing it into a custom mode and boosting saturation, raising contrast significantly and lowering the black levels slightly beyond the half-way threshold"

        • @JakeTheMuSS: That and switching off trumotion.

I bought this tv this morning and returned it within the hour. The picture clarity for normal SD channels is horrendous. The audio output is poor. The picture is better on HD channels and movies steamed via netflix seemed good. Note: there are no native "smart" apps built into the TV.

This might be a good deal for those who are not concerned about watching FTA and are only looking at streaming video. The audio is pretty poor so you might have to invest in a decent speaker.

    • That's what was predicted here from past Bauhn TVs selling for a higher price (poor audio, poor SD FTA viewing with UHD models) & ad / specs (not a smart tv). That's why I said I would not bother for my non-UHD usage.

(Post originally listed smart tv model.)

You also need to change screen settings to improve the picture, as stated in review above.

  • On a black screen (ie. the startup Bahun logo screen) I can see a line dividing the screen in perfect half. ie. left side of line is darker than right side of line.

This is almost unnoticeable if looking square to the TV. but moving to the side makes the line appear. If viewing from above or below the TV, the line is immediately apparent. It seems to be only black that shows this, other colours look fine even from the side.

Also, on a grey screen there are "bands" near the middle where the grey is slightly darker and not uniform with the rest of the screen.

Any way to fix this without returning?

    26 units/3 pallets+ @ Hornsby NSW

    • Half a dozen at castle towers now.

  • An update on my previous thoughts, TV looks 'good' with SD FTA content, looks awesome with HD FTA content and pretty shit on <= SD content delivered via a NetTVplus HDMI box (streams foreign media).

Yet to try 4k content, but I'm sure it will look amazing. If you dislike HD content and plan on watching only SD content, then you should skip this TV.

    • +1

Why would anyone buy a 65" UHD TV to watch SD content…

      • That's what most FTA TV is broadcast in. Most Aldi customers would still watch ordinary SD TV on it. They'd be buying on size & price.

Few would have UHD output devices, some might have Blue-ray. So there probably will be disappointed customers.

        • You mean USB and Chromecast? Pretty much free.

        • @joeno:
No. FreeToAir is broadcast TV from the usual local channels 7,9,10,ABC,SBS - mainly in SD (most at 576i).

Aldi customers aren't in the main that sophisticated - buying consumer electronics at a discount supermarket. Ask them what UHD is & they'll likely stare at you, but say cheap 65" & they'll want it.

The supplier to Aldi of this TV & I had a long discussion about the mismatch between specs of Bauhn equipment sold & users use & requirements. I was approached to consult with them on problems with sales through Aldi, especially regarding quality & returns. Aldi buys on most specs to the buck & can they sell it. Quality does not seem to matter.

People still watch FTA SD TV.
          And people want big screens.
So people will want to watch SD content on this TV.

Not everyone has the use people here have for this device.

        • +1

FTA SD is still totally watchable on this set.

        • @Fundies:
          Ah, that's a different discussion.

This was discussing WHY anyone would watch SD on a UHD TV.

Or why buy this TV to watch SD.
          Valid questions.

That's different to an opinion of still totally watchable, which I have no opinion on.
Others have questioned that opinion here and in previous BAUHN UHD discussions. That may indicate a processor issue across these units.

But the settings may need to be tweaked for optimal viewing.

As some may expect a better viewing experience simply with a larger & higher definition screen - even with low quality SD broadcasts, they may have their expectations disappointed. That's different again ;-)

        • Totally agree. I don't know what people expect with SD on a 65"?

I sit 2.7m away from this bad boy (future proofing ;) ) and the extra $2000 in my pocket after a last second ditching of a LG/Sony equivalent makes the imperfect picture a fu****g delight to watch.

          Raz.

Edit: This was in reply to Fundys "FTA SD is still totally watchable on this set"

      • Infidel explained it well. If the networks broadcasted their content at a minimum of 1080 this TV would be excellent for non-techy (most) users. That's not the case though, and so it's best suited to more tech savvy users who would have HD content readily available. Shame there's only a few FTA HD channels.

any new owners going to do a mini video review?, show fta, console gaming, fast moving visuals eg sport, would be appreciated

    • +1

set mine up yesterday. Motion blur a bit of a problem, yes on a flat light background there is definitely uneven backlighting.

But FTA is ok, Netflix is gorgeous and I'm in love with this tele. It allowed me to buy a 65" screen maybe 2 years before I thought I would be able to afford it. i've had crappy Tv's from Aldi before, this is an amazing bargain.

I never, ever use the built in speakers on a tele so I have no opinion on that.

      • I agree with you. Netflix just looks awesome! Very happy with this purchase.

      • Not seeing much blur on mine, have you tweaked the settings?

  • +1

just go buy one and if you don't like it, return it, no questions asked

  • After setting up the TV proper and watching some movies, I notice some slight banding in accordance to someone else here in the thread.

there are several faintly visible vertical bands that are from the direct lit LED system. Fortunately, I only see them when I'm looking for them. Watched two 4k movies yesterday and immediately stopped noticing them. They are apparent when web browsing though.

These vertical bands are probably alright and even expensive TV's sometimes have them, so all in all, I'm still very happy.

    • +1

just picked one up tonight - i noticed the banding too - actually its really obvious in dark pictures - how do you post an image here ?

      • There is a spot in Submit Deal where you can upload images.

      • I changed brightness to 40 and its almost completely fixed the problem.

        Raz.

  • Do you guys know if there's any left in any stores in Melbourne south east suburbs?

  • How do you change the black levels in the settings?

These settings are working for me:

    Contrast: 50
    Brightness: 40
    Saturation: 60
    Tint: 50
    Sharpness: 35
    Colour Temp: Warm
    Noise Reduction: Off
    HDMI mode: PC

Usage has been mostly been PS4, PC and Netflix.

    • Thanks AB, saw your Whirlpool post, those settings are working great, I just adjusted the brightness to 46.

    • Thanks. Are you using Advanced Settings as well, from 1147 screen?

  • I used the 1147 menu to create a new WB level half way between normal and warm. beautiful. Menu -1146, picture, wb adjust, set it then "sync all"

Can i view 4k content through USB?

  • +1

I previously purchased the 65 inch screen from aldi for 1199, that was alright. That prior model I had a few issues with, so that one went back. I decided to risk it again this weekend, and the experience has been very different. The models may share similar names, but the whole product is different. Like all screens, out of the box the image looks pretty poor with all the "features" turned on. After a couple of hours of adjusting the image, I'm extremely pleased - my current baseline is a Sony XBR55X8500C. The screen has standard settings to be adjusted, but the service menu really helps.

I'm actually pleased that they opted not to add smart functionality to the screen - most implementations are pretty poor, even on premium brands. The menu system is what I would classify as quick, it's not slow at all.

The media player is very bssic. It works well, but do not expect a wide range of supported file formats. That said, media player is basically in the same realm of smart functionality - and would prefer obtaining an external box for these requirements.

    • Whats your settings?

I have all standard except backlighting at 40 and sharpness 33.

I too bought the Bauhn based on price and will provide a mini review that I feel will help people, I used to scoff at the Aldi TV section because it was always thought Aldi sold rubbish, I took the gamble this time and I think it paid BEAUTIFULLY, I went down to the local Aldi Chermside store, stuffed it into the back of my Swift Sport 2012 and trotted home at a slow by moderate pace, I was glad to get home as I felt like a doll being stuffed into a cube trying to drive.

Unboxed it from the car and took it upstairs, getting looks from everybody at the huge size of the box

Out of the box it was not a bad experience for a Samsung Panel, note I am only using it for Xbox / PS4 / Chromecast 2 and 4K via GTX 970 GPU
My biggest gripe was WOW that backlight needs to come WAY DOWN, quickly jumped online and found the service mode settings, 1147 and it opened up a WHOLE new world of tweaking for me, I have played with nearly every setting (don't touch the aging section, that freaked me out until I saw the turn the power button off trick)

Adjusted the service mode settings and it was like a whole new panel, it literally blew me away, 65 inches of desktop glory

I must of got lucky, no backlight issues, no dead pixels, no clouding, no dirty screen effect, since setting the backlight to 40 I have noticed Blacks are very good for the price point and the TV seems more true to life and for the money had me more excited than a kid in a candy store

No smart TV functions is a blessing, menus are fast and having access to the service mode does help with tweaking the picture

    The Good

Samsung Panel, definately has to be, it seriously is damn good once tweaked, I can live the the Bauhn name / logo (you can turn it off in service mode)

Will do Chroma 4:4:4 and RGB Full / Limited with a HDMI 2.0 capable cable and GPU, also will do 60hz as well with the chroma 4:4:4 settings which make a huge difference to the black levels and viewing experience

No Ghosting and very little lag via 1080p / 4k modes (I have turned off any motion settings in both service menu and the main menus)
Playing with an Xbox One, good gaming performance

60Hz lag was mimimal via my PC, near instantly at 4k with my mouse pointer being the test factor here

4 HDMI inputs, all supporting HDMI 2.0

No Smart features, smarter to not include it and have a fast experience than a rather clunky one and sluggish by including it, for the $799 price I am very happy with this TV and with 60 days to try it out essentially, its a no brainer

    The Bad

LCD Panel Lottery, some people have had issues with tearing, poor build quality and different issues (varies per store, I basically just went for whatever TV on the pallet that had no marks on it and scored lucky, the others had noticable dinting in the cardboard, maybe returned? (Aldi Chermside)

HDMI Cables, some cables do not play nice with the TV, please ensure you use a quality short cable for the 4k 60hz chroma 4:4:4 modes as any cheaper cables will cause headaches, dropping in and out, kicking back to 30hz, I had all these issues and it was my cable not the TV

Media Player, very basic, very poor but for $800 at least they cut corners in the right places, they have installed a samsung quality panel (possibly even Samsung seconds that quite didn't make the cut for their TVs and sold off cheaply to Tempo, just a theory)

Some Clouding / Build quality issues / Damage, once again all depends on your store, how many they have had returned etc, I have been lucky to not experience any problems out of the box, your milage may vary

SD TV quality, not a con for me as I don't watch TV but upscaling is not as bad as people make it out to be, watching old star treck episodes in 4:3 mode and they seem to upscale to 65 inch size okay via netflix over a chromecast

Slightly higher power usage but granted its driving a 65 inch panel 210w of input is not bad, will need to check to see how much it actually draws

Warranty after 12 months and issues, the last 65 incher has still been working fine so I assume this one will be fine too longer term

    Overall

If you get a panel thats good and can live with tweaking a few settings, you end up with a lot of TV for a little amount of money, its no OLED OMG killer, but its a good quality product and I think Tempo have hit the mark by pairing a Samsung (in mine) Panel with an above average controller for chroma 4:4:4 and HDMI 2.0 HDCP 2.2 over 4 HDMI Ports (I am not sure if someone has managed to open the back up and find out what is actually inside) but from most of my tweaking, the TV scrubs up VERY WELL, and would rate the unit as following from my own experience

    Gaming on Xbox One 9/10
    Gaming on PS4 9/10
PC connected via HDMI 2.0 8/10
SD TV - Not tested but I didn't buy it for TV but lets say 5/10
SD Netflix Episodes- 7/10 but still very watchable and good black levels
4K Video - 9/10, doesn't get much better than this for 800 dollars
1080p video - 8/10 some loss of detail but not bad based on the panel size

Overall value 9.5/10 - 65 inches for $800, the best value panel and TV out there so far, its not meant to compete with the big brands but lets face it, it can do all the basics fine, SD TV upscaling is not as desirable as people want, but ask yourself this question, how much have you saved compared to buying the same size from another brand which still faces all the same lcd panel lottery issues this unit does

I can live without SD TV but in my circumstances I don't watch a lot of TV so this panel suits me as a gaming, PC, 3D editing monitor

I am absolutely happy with the money spent and if a better deal comes out in the next 60 days, I can return it without any questions asked and get a full refund, hows that for a warranty

Tweaking it makes it a good product and I feel the black levels you can get out of this panel if you have the time and patience are well worth it for under $800

Just remember the ozbargainer motto, a few hours tweaking = many dollars saved and I feel many people would find this TV afforable

I will share my settings at some stage to help others tweak their panels to the best capabilities

  • +1

After much debating whether to buy one I ended up grabbing the last one left from the Melbourne CBD store yesterday. Overall I was very impressed with the quality of the unit but then after doing some testing noticed a slight mark on the panel. Reading the WP thread looks like I'm not the only one to have this happen. It's not a scratch on the screen, but looks like it's on the panel. I can only notice it on bright scenes, lots of white. It is right on the edge so its not easy to notice unless I look for it, but now I know it's there my eye tends to find it. Really don't want to have to take another maxi cab trip back to the store so waiting to see what the Tempo support line wants me to me do.

    Quick thoughts:
SDTV is not good as others have commented
HD was fine but watching the NRL final last night I noticed some blur and degraded quality during fast scenes (but I'm no expert, maybe that's the limitation of HD Free to air?)
4K tests were very pleasing to the eye
Remote is great as is the responsiveness

If it wasn't for the mark on the panel I'd be 100% satisfied for the price I paid.

    • No blur for me on the HDTV stream I tried last night
Disable the motion stuff in both service / main menu mode
night and day difference for me, or perhaps your panel is different to mine as it has been a lottery
No marks or damage to mine thankfully, but my build date was the earliest out there so maybe got lucky haha

If you have any issues take it back and swap it

It is definately good value :)

      • Yeah waiting to see if I can find one at another store near Melbourne as this was the last unit left at my local. Checked out another 2 nearby as well but neither had any left.

Here's a picture of the panel issue: http://imgur.com/a/JDaON

        Indeed a bit of a lottery :D

        • without being foul that looks like a pubic hair stuck between the panel haha
maybe from the samsung factory before they sent it off to tempo

I would take it back and get another one if you can find one

What version is your panel, should be able to tell if you go to system info / build date

        • @shawncro 222:

I actually thought it could be a hair. The more I look at it, the more I believe it is.

          Panel is LSC650FJ02

        • @burtrito:

          Looks like it to me
          Could try getting it out
          Carefully though
