I got a flyer for discount codes off Synology NAS in a recent order.

DiskStation DS216j, $20 off, code SYNOLOGY216J (makes it cheapest on staticice): $194.99

DiskStation DS216+II, $30 off, code SYNOLOGY2162 (makes it cheapest on staticice): $408

DiskStation DS916+ 2GB RAM/8GB RAM, $40 off, code SYNOLOGY916 (not cheapest on statice but if you can pickup in Sydney and avoid postage definitely will be cheaper): $647/$748

Mwave is one of my preferred PC parts suppliers, never had a problem with them, they have Sydney (Lidcombe) pickup and because they have a shopfront you can pricebeat at officeworks.

    Stack with Amex offer too.

  • SYNOLOGY2162 doesn't seem to work for me… Anyone had any luck? Adding this to my Amex credits would be very useful!

748 here for the 916+ 8gb,vs 719.2 to get it on current eBay sale with free shipping.

  • Thanks for improving the post mods.

  • Synology is announcing new products soon. Might be worth waiting for a month if the offer is active throughout October

  • Reckon they are waiting til the 10th to chuck in free shipping.

  • I dont think Officework match price with codes.
I have used iomega NAS yet for storing pics and movies yet. It dies few months ago. Is it worth spending on these or if we can get a cheap/used laptop or NUC to do the same?

    • If you have space for a midi tower, these are good and cheap (fan is a not very quiet though):

      • Thanks. That was in my mind as well. But are they good for DLNA stuff or if we can stream via plex server or other dlna servers? These NAS bettern than these servers as both are diskless?

        • +1

You can install any OS on those HP servers and then Plex server onto that (which also does DLNA). The graphics cards in them are very weak so you wouldn't use one to run desktop programs, they're more for sitting there unattended running things like Plex server.

The "diskless" means you will have to buy disks - they don't come with them. The thing about these NAS is they are very low-powered and run a very simple OS which you operate through a browser on another computer. I don't think all of them run Plex server though so you should check first if this is a requirement. This tells you which models are compatible with Plex server: https://www.synology.com/en-global/dsm/app_packages/Plex_Med…

        • @dazweeja: Thanks. So as these NAS uses simple OS, less RAM wont cause any slowness or issues. Other thing which makes me crazy is RAID. Is it necessary to have RAID enabled and which one (1-5) is easy to implement.

  • Called Mwave to purchase the DS916+ and was told that i could not pick it up today as they have a 24 hours processing wait time. However if I paid a $9.95 VIP Pickup Service (1hr), i would be able to pick it up today. Really?
