iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

I just saw the announcement on GSMarena and got me hype for iPhone 7plus. Don't get me wrong , coming from Android fan boy , the dual camera on 7plus look cool and the jet black colour is good too.
Just wondering will anyone upgrade or buy the new iPhone? Personally , I would love to get one for my wifu. Will wait to see how much the plan gonna cost.

Post your data/calls usage and the OzBargian sleuths can work out the best plan for your situation haha. I'm guessing something along these lines would be sufficient for you?

@ilikeradiohead: It's around that, but signed up outside promotional period. So it's about $50+ SIM-only. At that stage, I might as well pony up the extra $20-30 for an added iPhone that can easily be sold for more than $720. Assuming I don't like it at all, I could also dual wield it with my 6P.

  • iPhone 3G/4/5/6 user here, (wife 3GS/4S/5S/6S). Not likely I'll upgrade initially, but keen on a power & battery upgrade. Usually ear/headphone and charge during work, so want to see how that plays out first. Guessing there will be a lightning-M to 3.5mm-F/lightning-F adapter to solve the issue though. Not keen on BT ear/headphones currently. Somewhat excited, as I usually upgrade on the tic of the tic-toc cycle.

    • Lightning M to 3.5mm F included in the box so hopefully that offers a bit of versatility in terms of earphone/headphone selection

      • Was referring to a lightning-M to 3.5mm-F/lightning-F split connector, not the single use supplied adapter. So we can charge and listen concurrently.

  • LG G5 got dual camera too. But optical zoom in ip7plus is something you cant easily find.

    • It's a rich man's g5. But it will have super Mario! Winner is iPhone.

iPhone 7 optical zoom is just switching from one camera to the other. Same as the G5 and other dual camera phones.

  • Vodafone Pricing
If you want it on a contract the cheapest you can get is:
    iPhone 7 32GB: $76/month over 24 months for $40 Red Plan = $1824 over the 2 years
    iPhone 7+ 32GB: $85/month over 24 months for $40 Red Plan = $2040 over the 2 years

It may be a long time ago, but I remember getting the 16GB iPhone 3G from Optus for $62/month and that was with 1.5GB of data included.

I am now on an $18/month PAYG (Vaya) plan, totalling $432 for usage over 2 years.

I still love keeping informed of the latest advancements in mobile phones, but as I've gotten older it seems like
      a) I'm using my phone less (less gaming)
      b) mid-range mobile phones serve my purposes (Facebook, Reddit)
      c) I've become more of an ozbargainer and can't justify spending an extra $500 (at least) a year to keep up with the latest and greatest in mobile phones, with not much noticable difference in day to day use.

(Not so much an anti-apple post, but an anti-"I must have the newest and shiniest thing" post)

      • I feel you on the 3rd point especially. I got the Samsung Note 3 when it came out for ~$800 imported. I'd like to get a new phone now but I'm struggling to justify even another $800 spend (EG S7 Edge imported goes for around that).

      • My iPhone 5 cost $5 per month on a business plan we were getting anyway. Still use it, and can't justify buying a new phone whatever the features.

Waiting for the iPhone 6s Plus to drop in price.. such a downer in terms of Apple event. Pretty much all the rumours and leaks were true so not much excitement in specs POV. Better value and specs for phones out there for sure.

    • Apple already dropped the iphone 6s plus. So It's good time to get it.

I have been using iPhone since the 2G days (original iPhone, ATT only model) and have always upgrade every year.

This year I am actually going to buy Google Pixel /XL (formerly Nexus Sailfish/Marlin)

Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with iPhone 7 and I have spend thousands on iOS apps, I am still using iPhone (6S) as a work assigned phone.

I have two silly reasons for moving to Android:

    1. Emulator, my Nvidia shield portable died and I missed having such an awesome small form factor to carry my classic games everywhere.

    2. Daydream VR: quite interested on what Google has to offer compared to Oculus Gears VR/Samsung

iPhone 7 doesn't give me the same exciting hook/gimmick as the Daydream. Most of the features been on Android for years. Yes I am 100% sure on iPhone those features will be more refined, but not enough for me to stick around this upgrade cycle

    RU OK?

  • Guys i am on a two year contract with Vodafone. I will be completing a year in October. Is there a way to upgrade to the latest iPhone? Can i pay off the rest of my phone cost and request vodafone for an upgrade?

Mostly interested in the improved cameras than anything else. I would also like a 128 gig model. My current one is a 64 gb 6S Plus b

    • Vodafone usually allow you to upgrade at 18 months.

Given you're only 11 months in, might be a bit difficult unless you negotiate some sort of deal with them.

I suggest negotiating a payout figure for the device only, agreeing to re-sign for a further 24 months with the new iPhone 7, and selling your 6S on eBay to offset the payout figure. You should come out a little bit on top that way.

Done it at least 4-5 times previously.

      • Thanks mate. Will try this out.

    • If you are on Red plan..

      http://www.vodafone.com.au/plans/new-phone-every-year

      Step 1
Sign up to a new 24 month Red plan or Red Business plan.

      Step2
After 12 months, take your phone to your nearest Vodafone store. We’ll make sure that it’s still in good working order.

      Step3
Choose a new phone from the current range. Additional charges may apply if upgrading to a model of equal or higher value.

      Step4
Pay the New Phone Every Year fee of $149 and sign up to a new 24 month Red plan.

  • I haven't seen any prices yet, but whatever they are, it's out of my budget…so I'm gonna stick with my current 6s for another year ;)

    • +1

Yeah 6S is fine for now. I've been using my 5S for years and it's still getting the job done. It's rumoured that there will be a whole redesign of the iphone next year so unless you really need to change I'd say save your cash.

Read here (obviously just rumours but these guys were quite on point for the last few iphone models): http://www.macrumors.com/roundup/iphone-8/

      • Yeh I'll probably wait for the 7s. I use to use the 4 and then the 5 both hand me downs but did the job. 6s is the first iPhone I've ever bought lol

  • I WAS REALLY IMPRESSED WITH THIS PRESENTATION OVERALL, kudos!

    Why?
The iPhone 7 was rumoured to be a minor refresh.
But the upgrades are actually decent like the new display, stereo speakers, advanced cameras, new processors, waterproofing, home button, and DAC headphone target.

The AirPods might be quite decent (sound quality, battery life, comfort) sound solution, so we'll see. Expensive, but perhaps it'll pave the way forward.

The Nintendo announcement was awesome. Pokemon Go on your wrist is great. And that Super Mario Run game genuinely looks fun.

The new Apple Watch was also rumoured to be a minor refresh.
But it also received some great (much needed) upgrades in terms of finish (ceramic), processor, waterproofing, GPS, etc etc.
There was two BIG let downs of the iWatch though:
    - still only has 0-1.5 day battery life
    - still has a crap design/style (thick, odd rectangle is NOT a square, the second button is redundant is ruins the aesthetics)

If anything I am an "Android fanboy" however, I have to say kudos to Apple for making their products interesting again.
Now Apple, please put some attention to your iTV, iPod, iPad, and iMacs…. they're not revolutionary / just rehashes.
…and everyone else, take cues, but that does not mean copy.

    • +1

To be quite honest, as someone that owns an Apple Watch, that regularly gets 2+ days out of the battery. The problem isn't the battery. The problem with Gen 1. is that they were so conservative with how hard they used the batteries that applications on it take forever to open and retrieve data from the watch. So much so it's usually 2-5x quicker to just take out your phone for anything other than notifications.

I'd be happy with half the battery and 10x the speed. The design is pretty awesome and and the second button is cool, but could be more useful, at least with the series 2 launch Apple avoided pushing the 'useless' features that they have bound to the second button (eg. favourite contacts etc, as if you would 'initiate' any sort of communication from the watch!)

TLDR; As an owner, the design and battery are awesome. The software and processor are the letdowns. Hopefully the next OS helps fix that, though I don't think unless they make performance improvements in software the '50% faster' CPU will be enough.

The air-pods are pretty shit because they will fall out of your ears. That seriously is their biggest issue. At first I thought you would probably be able to fix that with some sort of third party ear-clip like the ones on the beats, but given the way the charging case works you would have to take any clip off every time you stashed them to charge / store them. Which would be really annoying.

I was ready to pull the trigger on the iPhone 7, but once I worked out that the plans were not actually subsidising the phones and it was substantially cheaper to buy one outright and go on a BYO plan, I had to weigh up keeping a 2 year old 6 that is still perfectly fine vs the outright price of a new 7, and the only benefit I would get out of the 7 is the better camera, and that's just not worth $1300 to me. Maybe next year.

There will be plenty of lightning > 3.5mm + charging input options out there (there's already the silly expensive Apple dock), so the lack of the headphone port is really a non-issue (and standard 3.5mm > lightning adapters are included / spares are cheap for Apple).

  • +1

Seeing their conference and how Nintendo stole the show, I am convinced iphone is a thing of the past. The same product all over again. It just looks like a 6/6s. And the specs… not sure WHY they do not compete with current high end devices. Used to love my iphone but Apple strategy has killed it.

    • -1

      You do have a point.
However, try to think of this from a business point of view.

Apples biggest asset is their iOS AppStore.
And the fact that all software runs quasi-natively on their products.

So Apple can afford to hold back their devices in terms of ram size, clockspeeds, processor type, graphics prowess, resolution, and even battery capacity.

So by holding themselves back, they can pick choose and tailor the upgrades more maturely, gradually, and more profitably.

On top if this, despite their disadvantages the iPhone can still run competitively because the software allows it to.

Its why the bootloader can't be accessed, why the AppStore is so curated, and why you can't side-load anything.

Besides, having everything doesn't make for a better phone, it can actually make for a worse one. Compare the HTC One M9 to the iPhone 6S Plus…one is over-the-top gimmicky and not a good product. The other is well, widely loved by consumers and geeks abound.

PS Don't forget about 3D/Force Touch, its quite a welcomed addition in iOS first-party and now third-party Apps. Then compare it to the attempts made of it from the Android side. iOS has one major flaw, which is resolution independent Apps, and they've solved that issue back in the 5S days. Now the biggest let downs with iPhones are the lack of Default App choice, and an easily manageable file storage system.

      • +3

Then compare it to the attempts made of it from the Android side.

We don't care about force touch when we have a back and menu button. Force Touch is not an Apple thing. It's just another dumb word Apple uses to make it seem like they were the first ones to invent it. Wrong

I won't use Apple devices, because the hardware is shit. Not paying high prices for average hardware.

  • I'm upgrading from 5s..Was thinking about getting it with a contract but after seeing the pricing for the new Ip6 Ip6+ on Telstra plans, I have decided to purchase it outright.

Big upgrade for those skipped the 6s

  • A wireless charging option would've overcome the listening while charging concern.

  • +2

Been an iPhone user (4s, 5, 6 plus) for years and I'm gonna move on to Samsung next, I am NOT gonna put up with their crazy expensive wireless earphones lol.

    • Well, that's not a rational reason to ditch your 6+.

There are many, many different Bluetooth headsets; from $10 eBay specials to the new Apple ones, to Beats and others for $big.

But you certainly do not have to purchase the Apple ones.

Now, it may be an ideological thing: you may be angry with Apple. Fair enough. But this would seem odd, after going through all those models that suddenly you now hate Apple.

If your anger is so great that Apple having a new expensive product that you do not actually need to purchase in order to use the new phone, then I fear you may have other issues. RU OK?

  • I wish Nintendo would just make their own damn phone, that would be something genuinely exciting, rather than just the same apple phone with a few more half-baked brain farts thrown in.

  • Bumping the bottom storage tier to 32GB will be great for a lot of people on corporate phone plans. Early last year my wife was offered a choice of phones at her workplace: all of the iPhones were bottom tier and/or superseded with ≤16GB of storage, and there were too many hoops to jump through to go higher. She went for a Note 4 with 32GB instead; several of her colleagues also preferred iPhone but moved to Android because 16GB was just too low. She ended up buying a 6s 64GB for herself later in the year after getting too irritated by the Note 4.

  • +2

Wife has 5s and was wanting new iPhone and really liked it until I showed her the lack of headphone jack. She was perplexed as to why they would do something so stupid as all 3 of iPhone users in our house often have phone charging (often from a battery) and listening to music.

She now absolutely does not want one so possibly get iPhone 6s

    • +2

      Same line of thought here.

Can't charge while using as gps AND listen to music at the same time is a huge regression in usability for me.

Apple dropped the ball on this one. And this is coming from a guy who bought his household a mbp, mba, iPhone 5s, 6s and 2 Apple watches.

  • My gripe with iphone is itune backup to your computer. with 256 GB flash storage. PC using SSD as a main window 10 boot drive will need to consider upgrading their SSD to 512 GB SSD in the forseeable future

    • +1

If anything the ability to backup is one of iphone's best features.

You can choose not to backup your music if it's an issue

    • That's more than their current Macs and Macbooks!

  • If the colour and the dual camera can attract you, then I'd say you're not an android fan boy but a normal user. But that's not the point.

The iphone 7 doesn't seem to much of a step up from the iphone 6S and the removal of the 3.5mm port leaves me wanting. My suggestion is that if you don't want the latest and greatest, might be better to go for the iphone 6S if you want the iOS platform.

Can't believe the people on eBay selling their iPhone 7/7plus pre-orders for up to 3 times the price they got it for!

  • +1

I use my charger while driving and on the hands free headset that plugs into 3.5mm port. So now I can't do that Anymore.
Also when I'm lying in bed, I charge up and use the headphones to listen to music or on the phone (so no one has to listen to the music) and I don't charge overnight as that's not required with the quick charge in my s6 edge.. So, that's just one annoyance. Plus USD 160 for the AIR buds. No thanks.

    • You can use the dock to do this, or there will soon be lots of much cheaper third party adapters, not the end of the world, given the price of the phone the extra cost of an adapter just needs to be factored into your decision.

  • +3

I jumped to android (galaxy s7) this gen and couldn't be happier. I would urge anyone else who, like me, was worried about making the jump, to give very it a shot. It becomes very apparent very quickly that apples closed ecosystem is horrible and being able to use your phone however you want is just brilliant. A micro SD card gets you an extra 200gig easily and cheaply, chargers are cheap and it charges very quickly, battery time is excellent and everything just feels nicer (oh the joy you feel when using the camera!)

I get the apple fanboyism though, because I loved them up til now as well but I hate iTunes and the fact that I couldn't just use my phone the way I wanted to, finally got to me and after I used my friends s7, there was no comparison.

I'm not sure how others feel but apple made me feel like switching was going to be a hassle and I'd lose data, etc. Nope, it was simpler than I'd imagined.

    • +2

      I shared the same sentiment having owned a 4S, 5S and 6.

I am much happier now with my S7 Edge.
I'm the user after all, I should be able to set up the phone the way I wanted it.

I got sick of Apple because of their closed ecosystem. When I was using my iphone, I felt like a slave to Apple being dictated as to how I should be using a phone that I bought with my money.

When you think about it, Apple is like a cult.
People will sing praises no matter how underwhelming their products are.
Apple will always target those sheeple and milk them for profits.
Their closed ecosystem being a fenced pasture and Tim Cook being the herder.

I left Apple and couldn't be happier.

  • No. My iPhone 5 is working fine and frankly more than I need already.

  • I was planning to upgrade to the iPhone 7 from my 4S, but now, nope. I think I'm going to stick with the smaller form factor, and pick myself up an SE, which contains all the grunt of last years 6S.

  • Get a OnePlus 3 instead. Similar specs for 1/2 the price yet both manufactured in the same country. Just don't rely too heavily on their customer service.

  • i purchased a 64gb 6s a few months ago, am thinking if its worth selling it and buying a 7. mainly just trying to see what the change over will cost me. i paid $1200 for it, and watching a few ebay ads, it seems its still worth at least $800. a 32gb 7 is $1079 so thats a change over of roughly $279

    • buy the new 7 within 3 months of your overseas holiday and claim the gst back on your way out of australia. that should make your change over closer to $179!

  • +3

While I understand the openness aspect of Android and I myself like it too as my daily driver for quite sometime was the Google Nexus 5 but I simply do not understand how Samsung is an alternative to iPhone if you like Android. The software on Samsung phones is dastardly and memory leak laden software is complete mess. I also do not understand the fact that why we need to mention "only" 2GB of ram compared to 4GB when in actual usage, 2GB is far more efficient when it comes to multitasking. And do not get me started on the PPI race. Yes there is argument for better resolution screen on the smaller iPhones but 1080p screens on the bigger iPhones is plenty. Apart from academic numbers what good is a higher resolution screen on a 5.5 inch screen.

Google's Nexus phones offer far more polished Android experience at almost half the price, not to mention timely updates and longer shelf life. Samsung updates are known to screw up performance on their phones.

    Now some facts:

    1. iPhone 6S/6S Plus is still the fastest phone by far when it comes to real life speed. I can only imagine how fast the new iPhones would be.
    2. While iPhones no longer have the absolute best camera's but they managed just fine with smaller apertures and smaller sensors. With iPhone 7, the camera specs are finally on parity with the rest of the world on specs and I am pretty sure they will be the best camera's bar none.
    3. Say what you will about 3D touch but I for one do not find it a gimmick. Infact with iOS 10 it is more useful than ever.
    4. iPhones have longer manufacturer support than possibly any other phone around, Nexus phones included.

For the cost argument, the new Note 7 is infact costlier than the latest iPhone 7 in the US.

    • The Note7 is even costlier to Samsung

    • -2

The software on Samsung phones is dastardly and memory leak laden software is complete mess.

Rubbish. Absolute rubbish. Still peddling the same nonsense from 7 years ago?

I also do not understand the fact that why we need to mention "only" 2GB of ram compared to 4GB when in actual usage, 2GB is far more efficient when it comes to multitasking

When you're running toned down apps, all you need is 2GB. Android apps are far more demanding and so are the games.

And do not get me started on the PPI race. Yes there is argument for better resolution screen on the smaller iPhones but 1080p screens on the bigger iPhones is plenty. Apart from academic numbers what good is a higher resolution screen on a 5.5 inch screen.

Obviously someone who has never owned an S7 or Note 7. The QHD screen makes a huge difference after using it for a few years. It's similar to how gamers can distinguish between 60 Hz and 144 Hz. What is the point in having a 1080p screen if resolution is on the rise in almost all form factors. The battery life on the s7 edge and note 7 is excellent. It lasts more than 24 hours and sometimes 2 days if you're not a heavy user.

Google's Nexus phones offer far more polished Android experience at almost half the price

Google's Nexus doesn't compare to a Note 7. It's behind in almost every feature to the Note 7. I don't see the new Nexus bringing anything special to the table. Stock Android is rubbish. Touchwiz is excellent and comes with Samsung's Korean apps and Samsung Pay.

iPhone 6S/6S Plus is still the fastest phone by far when it comes to real life speed.

What does that even mean? The Iphone runs on a different OS and uses in a closed ecosystem that run at lower settings.

With iPhone 7, the camera specs are finally on parity with the rest of the world on specs and I am pretty sure they will be the best camera's bar none.

It's still behind the S7's camera. The iPhone 7 camera is mediocre. Something to expect from iphones in the modern day.

the new Note 7 is infact costlier than the latest iPhone 7 in the US.

As a Note 7 user and someone who gets iphones for free from work, there is no comparison. The Note 7 is the future in smartphones. Best thing I have ever used and I'm getting a replacement in 11 days, so that's something to look forward to. I haven't noticed any battery problems and I use wireless+cable charging.

It's clear to me that you're not an advanced user or have any specialist knowledge in the field. Just another everyday user who doesn't measure a phone based on its hardware and software, but what you feel about it. Feelings don't matter to me.
Continue giving your money to the most abhorrent company in the world. Bunch of tax evading scum bags who don't know what the meaning of innovation is. You're only increasing their stockpiles of money in Ireland and Switzerland.

      • +2

Blah blah blah blah. Really toned down apps? Nopes dude i am not taking the bait.

      • +1

Google's Nexus doesn't compare to a Note 7. It's behind in almost every feature to the Note 7.

Except that it ships an outdated OS when the year old 6P runs Nougat, and does everything the Note 7 does except for the Iris sensor which is actually slower than the fingerprint sensor which makes people not bother using it anyways……

In comparison the iPhone 5 which was released 4 years ago gets iOS 10.

        • Android is an open source OS. Therefore, each manufacturer has its own version of the UI and OS. The Nexus is a Google phone, hence why it is updated first. Are you that brain dead that you could not work that out?

There's nothing wrong with the current Android Marshmallow since it was only released 6 months ago. Google's updates to Android are minor in terms of security. Most of the security updates are handled by the manufacturer. Samsung updates its flagship phones quite often actually.

The iphone 5 is an Apple product. Apple makes its own OS.

You don't even know a single thing about software, so please spare me the crap about 'updated' OS when you don't even know what it takes to update an OS.

Apple may have an updated OS in their iphone 7, but its hardware pales in comparison. The technology you have in iphones now were in Android phones years ago.

All it would take for me to use an Apple product is if they would update their hardware to the latest instead of selling old technology from Samsung, TSMC, Foxconn etc. You onyl have to look at the Macbook line to see why APple is behind the curb. They purchased the remains of Intel's last batch of processors at bargain prices, so they could extend delay the release of their the new macbook and make a tidy profit. Bunch of scumbags if you ask me.

        • Hi technology illiterate sheepie.

The note 7's battery is what is faulty and it has only affected a small number of phones. Samsung is a massive wide ranging company that works in consumer, military and enterprise spaces, so you can always rely on them to do a proper recall. I bet you didn't even know that Apple has released many faulty phones in the past, but didn't' bother recalling it to save bank.

Would you choose to live near high voltage transmission lines and radio towers?

        • @JajaMinx:

          I read what you wrote

  • OP is very courageous!

  • So you're gonna pay $1000+ for dual camera and The cool Jet black colour?

    • Get it from US or Japan if you are going to those countries any time soon. Much cheaper. Forget AU pricing.

  • The jet black looks nice, but ultimately you would need a case, so the colour becomes not a big deal.
The better camera and water resistance is a good win (and about time)

Love it how Apple always markets these phones as a revolution when I've had half of these features for years on my android phone. And those bezels!

The absence of a headphone jack shouldn't be a feature and Samsung and Sony have both made waterproof phones with a headphone jack. I think that whole debacle is pretty slimey on their part.

    • I don't doubt that Android releases most features much earlier than Apple but it also comes at a cost. Apple will not release it until they've optimised it and works properly. Problem with Android platform is less optimised apps on a less optimised platform. The end product is hgih battery usage, lags, bugs etc.

      • Used a flagship Android phone lately? I only buy them and I've gotta say I don't experience any bugs. Maybe years ago but not now. Phones with Marshmallow run pretty smooth imo! Windows phones on the other hand…

Battery life was great on my Sony Z2 and Samsung S7 and yet I see friends regularly charging and complaining about their iphones battery (although my friend with a plus says hers is good).

The only real weakness I see is an inconsistent UI but that's mostly fixed with a launcher. Maybe more economic designs from some manufacturers but that's it really.

        • Yes these days it's a bit better but not hiding the fact that battery life is still bad in general. I had a Moto X Style which in 3 hours went from 100% to 65% battery. Same usage on a 6S drops only to 85%. Considering the battery sizes of two phones, it's pretty bad.

I did have a Z3 previously and loved the battery life on that. Should have never sold it.

Also forgot to mention before, I agree about the IPhone bezels… they can't make up an excuse for that one.

    • The worst part is people in the media are saying it's "waterproof", which is far from the truth. IT's only ip67! lol
Not even in the same league as the s7, s7 edge and note 7.

      • I find it really surprising that the media has reacted so positively to the 's lack of headphone jack. Probably shouldn't have though!

      • I agree that the Note 7 is a better waterproof phone. Definitely needs it.
