Western Digital WDTV Mini $38 @ Harvey Norman

530

as the title states, it was in their catalogue its not the HD version, but it says it will Upscale to 1080i. they also had a 1TB WD Desktop Hard Drive for $95. i went to Goodguys Tamworth to ask whether they could beat the $38 they said no chance and walked off. :)

Good Guys are a bunch of morons. I am yet to score a deal with them and I normally find their staff pathetically stingy. Why not go to OW for a price beat??

    • +1

I no. So much for pay less, pay cash…

    • I've already tried 3 OW last night after seeing this deal on the Harvey catalogue. Apparently all OW has sold out on the WDTV mini. Probably everyone went to OW for a price match when Binglee was doing it @$39 last month?

"they said no chance and walked off. :)" LOL Good deal!

  • In that catalogue, the deal above that is like…

10 Blank DVD's for $1. (Now that's a deal) Shame its limit 2 per customer.

    nevermind.. its $1.99

    sad face.

    • DSE had the same deal a week ago

  • Is this available in all states?

  • did anyone know the supporting files that can be play on this player?

  • i was thinking about pairing this up with the 2.5" 65 dollar seagate 500gb. would it receive enough power?

    • Yeah it will power 2.5" HDD fine with USB

  • Say you had a HD movie, slapped it onto a WDTV LIVE (Not mini) and had it hooked up via HDMI to a HD TV, would it play in full HD 1080p as it would like a Bluray player?

    • Yes, It will..

    • as manutdfan (go chelsea!) said it doesnt support .mkv and i dont believe it reads usb optical drives.

Paradox was talking about the WDTV LIVE, which is a different product (superior and more expensive) to the one advertised above for $38. The WDTV LIVE supports a lot more formats but tends to cost >$165 (as opposed to the Mini that's usually ~$50).

The LIVE will do what he wants though, assuming the movie in question is in one of the supported formats listed here: http://www.wdtvlive.com/products/wdtv_live#specs (for comparison the Mini's supported formats are here: http://www.wdtvlive.com/products/wdtv_mini#specs). It wouldn't play protected Bluray discs if you plugged in an optical drive though, you'd have to convert the movie to another format first.

          Cheers Brulath :)

    It does not support .mkv

    • No biggy. Its a simple unit to play simple SD files. Need mkv support or HD, just buy the Live which is still a great price. Or some of the cheaper overseas players that cost around $80-$100.

    • You can always just convert from .mkv to MPEG4 or AVI using a free program like Vuze (see here: http://www.vuze.com/) its a torrent program that converts files too.

  • good buy!!! + from me

I read sth about using a component to vga will let you use it with LCD monitor~ is that right?

  • What does this actually do?

    • If you plug in a hard drive via USB which contains any of the supported file types (http://www.wdtvlive.com/products/wdtv_mini#specs) it'll let you view/play/listen to them on your television. I have one and it works as advertised, I use it to play .avi videos on my television (I find it more convenient than having to burn the videos to a DVD to watch them on the TV).

The Mini doesn't play high definition files though, only standard. It upscales them, but if you have 720p or 1080p files it probably won't play them (see the supported file types & resolutions). If that's not a problem for you though it's a great deal =)

  • Dick Smith at the Logan Hyperdome had a couple of dozen of these yesterday for the same price (Give or take a dollar or 2)

  • Good bargain. Plays everything you need, if your not looking for full 1080p.

  • does this unit come with a remote?

  • Harvey Norman southland are out of stock. Got JBHIFI to price match without any issues

  • Good buy! I just bought one from HN Garden City.
There's about 3-4 left, so you guys better be quick! else just price match it at JB.
But, if you really wanna be cheap…try and get officeworks to beat it by 5% = $36.10 = bargain!!lol

  • Nice little toy, bought one today from HN Alexandria. A bit disappointed with the video quality though, it flickers.

  • i bought one from Bing Lee for $36. ok quality, great price. OW price match if there is no HN or Bing Lee around u.
but after moving house, my picture lookes funny. the color becomes more blue and yellow for some reason. Any expert on this?

Are you using the component output,
if so, check your connections, one of the wires may be loose or faulty.
also some players have a setting for which type of signal is output on component, not sure if the mini does, but if so that may help.

      • thanks, will try this

    • Hi Catmao, which Binglee is that? in Sydney? need to get one coz my Thomson RCA L8 just died few days ago …

  • Can someone please confirm if this thing can resume playback from where you stopped? also can you delete files from the menu?

    • resume playback - yes.
delete files from the menu - no

  • Just bought one. No HN near me so went to DSE and they had it for $49.
After checking with HN, they price-matched and gave me $1.10 off!!
