Cheerson CX-20 Auto Pathfinder (GPS) Quadcopter US $195.99 Shipped (~AU $262) from GearBest

enzioFirenze

I was looking for a quadcopter recently and talked to Sunny @ GearBest about something that gives great value for money and Sunny was kind enough to drop the price down a bit further. It was USD195+ shipping (USD40+) before and I asked Sunny whether they could do any better as shipping kinda kills the deal. It seems to be at USD212 mark in Amazon + shipping so compared to that, this definitely is a deal. Here's the camelcamelcamel link for the price history and as it can be seen, $200 has been the lowest for this quad in Amazon although other sites may have provided better discounts.

GearBest has 16 quadcopters in this batch for this price so be quick if you are looking for a good quadcopter. The advantage with Cheerson seems to be that they have a lot of parts readily available for cheap. It also seems to be amateur friendly with return-to-home and low-voltage functions and extendable transmitter with 2 AUX. Here's an excerpt about the copter from the website.

Features:
Cheerson CX - 20 auto-pathfinfer 6 - axis system open-source flight control quadcopter for flying play.
It has the GPS hold system, has auto-return function.
It can fly about 15 minutes.
It can take about 350g weight thing.
It's product weight is about 0.98 kg and product package weight(including copter, copter accessories and copter box) is about 2.68 kg

Attractive and Highly Integrated Design
A compact and highly integrated design means that it is easier for you to pack it into your backpack. The streamlined design brilliantly reflects the aesthetics of its industrial design and the fantastic visual effects allows you to become the focus of the crowd. Moreover, you can mount a GoPro or other light and handy cameras on your Auto-Pathfinder to shoot some footage from the air which will bring you a brand new travel experience.

Read to Fly Design
The hardware mounting and software tuning are all done prior to delivery. The Auto-Pathfinder is ready to fly the moment you unpack it, you just need to attach propellors, charge the LiPo and install the transmitter batteries before use.

Contains Remote Control Unit (Just Add 4 x AA Batteries)
Auto-Pathfinder contains a remote controller and receiver, which help the user to completely avoid the inconvenience of purchasing such things. The only thing you need to do is to add TX batteries (4x AA dry cell). The 2.4 G ISM frequency makes the effective control distance up to 300 meters (can be impacted by the specific flight environment). The frequency hopping anti-interference design allows multiple remote controllers to work at the same time, and provides a reliable remote communications link.

Stable as Well As Agile
Auto-pathfinder has an integrated flight dynamics system, the MX + GPS multi-rotor autopilot system, as well as the dedicated remote controller and receiver. Flight parameters and functions have been setup before delivery, so you can fly your Auto-Pathfinder the moment you receive it. The proven stability of the MX autopilot system allows you to easily achieve great flight performance.

Two Flight Control Modes, Including Position Hold
With the built-in MX autopilot system plus a GPS module, the Auto-Pathfinder has GPS Attitude and Attitude Control Mode. Pilots can switch between the two modes to achieve a particular flight experience.

Intelligent Orientation Control (IOC)
Auto-Pathfinder also has the Intelligent Orientation Control (IOC) function of the MX autopilot system. Usually, the forward direction of a flying multi-rotor is the same as the nose direction. By using Intelligent Orientation Control (IOC), wherever the nose points, the forward direction has nothing to do with nose direction: In course lock flying, the forward direction is the same as a recorded nose direction. In home lock flying, the forward direction is the same as the direction from home point to the multi-rotor.

Failsafe and Auto Go Home / Landing
Auto-Pathfinder also has the failsafe function of the MX autopilot system. This means when the communication between the MX Controller and the transmitter is disconnected, the outputs of all command sticks from controller will go to the center position. If the GPS signal is good enough, the system will automatically trigger Return To Home and will land safely.

Low Voltage Protection
Auto-Pathfinder also has two levels of low voltage protection, a function of the MX autopilot system. It prevents your multi-rotor from crashing or other harmful consequences caused by low battery voltage. In the first level of protection, the LED indicator blinks and makes a sound of “Bi-Bi-Bi” to warn you. In the second level protection the system will trigger the Auto-Pathfinder to land automatically.

Maximum Flight Speed 10m/s
The maximum horizontal flight speed of the Auto-Pathfinder can reach 10m/s and the maximum vertical speed is 6 m/s. The perfect combination of speed and stability allows you to experience the glamour of Auto-Pathfinder.

High Intensity Led Lights, to Aid Orientation During Flight
Under each arm of the Auto-Pathfinder there are some high intensity LED indicators which are used to help you to see the orientation during flight.

Camera Mount (Camera not Included)
Auto-Pathfinder has an external removable camera mount for you to mount light and handy cameras (GoPro for example) or other video shooting electronic equipment. It is very convenient for you to record your flight.

10 to 15 Minutes of Flight Time
Auto-Pathfinder includes a 3S LiPo battery (with the capacity of 2700mAh, weight only 180g) and a balance charger. With the all-in-one design and light airframe, the flying time could last 10 to 15 minutes which will give you a more extensive flight experience.

Note:The difference between Open-source flight controller, Zero Tech flight controller and A Big Shark flight controller is:
Open-source flight controller can be upgraded by player, but Zero and A Big Shark only can be upgraded with the software made by manufacturer

Package Includes:
1 x Quadcopter
1 x Romote Control
1 x Balance Charger
4 x Propeller
1 x Li-po Battery
2 x Aircraft Support
1 x Camera Support
1 x User Manual

Here's a review for the quad. Personally, this is my first mid sized quad and I'm buying it to learn and do some aerial photo/videography on it.

Cheers and Thanks Sunny for this deal.

PS: I think we can give GearBest another chance as they've said they revamped their dispatch and support process in Monty's thread.

      • Ozbargain will have to pay the divorce lawyer once my wife has enough of my money wasting

        • my better half still has time to pull the plug, may be then I can buy some eneloops from leftover wedding money lol ;)

Been this price from banggood for a while banggood cheaper shipping had mine two year's great quad awesome range gps is pretty accurate

    • yeah the Banggood one comes to US$209.37 for me so I think it's nearly a $15 saving :)

Open-source is not a bad idea but the community is not well regulated sometimes.

It may be a good deal unless:

you already have a $$$ GOPRO or XIAOMI or other sport camera; or
you just want to fly the drone but not taking serious arial footage; or
you have a better drone but you want to do more practice - I think this drone fits in this category well.

    My advise is,

Arial photographing is really a fascinating and booming industry, it's full of fun! If you want a budget drone but you want to have a more decent drone (want to pay a little bit more), I think an alternative solution is to buy Phantom 3 Standard edition when it is on sale (it was down to $600-ish).

Phantom 3 Standard comes with a good camera (say it worth $150), a gimble (must have if you want to do some highly usable footage - these would cost you $$$), and a good mobile phone app which you can take full advantage of their ongoing support.

PS: it is just my personal opinion.

    • yeah I was considering buying a used DJI P3 Standard but I also wanted to have an action camera (had a GoPro Hero 4 Black but got bored without a screen) so I wanted to go with this and Xiaomi Yi 4k camera alone with a cheap 3-D brush-less gimbal. But the gimbal can wait, I'm not really serious about photo/videography, just as a hobby :) Great insight though, thanks mate :)

      • Good point!

It is a bit disappointed that DJI Phantom cannot have camera removable….P3S equipped with good quality camera so it would be great if they can make next gen camera detachable - like Mi Drone…

I have a P3 and I purchased two toy drone ($30 in total) from Dick Smith when it was closing down. Two of the cheap drone had died since…

A few people I have spoken too say, buy a cheaper one, learn his to fly (crash and destroy) with it, then get a decent one… That's why I was thinking of this one ?

  • As someone who owns a Phantom 3 A, and a CX-20. They're pretty different beasts.
I love the configurability of the CX-20. I can use it for photography with my go-pro, or as a heavy, slower FPV racer, or can switch to acro mode and do some flips etc.
It's cheap on parts, and a great way to learn to fly and mod.
If you want something that's super stable, always does what it's told and basically a photography only drone, then spend some more and get a Phantom, Xiaomi Drone or one of a dozen similar options based on your price range.

    • I kinda love the configurability as well and yeah it was part of why I got this one :) Definitely agree with you on P3A, I would have gone for that if not for the camera restrictions :(

  • Oops. My bad. I bought mine from Banggood. Delivered in a week. I'm not going near Gearbest again after they stuffed me around.

  • My CX-20 is still dangling high on a tree in the local park since Feb, despite many strong windy days.

Buy another one and perform a rescue mission, video it and put it on Youtube.

  • Just bought one from Banggood..

    • I got mine today from GearBest :) pretty satisfied with their service at the moment :)

  • I should have known better….after paying for the cx20 from banggood i checked my order status today and it's showing as 'on backorder'.

There was no mention of backorder when i bought it… no warning of low or no stock..etc..

So now they can't even tell me how long the delay is :(

Seems they have issues supplying quadcopters …. first they totally remove their DJI 4 advert and ignore questions about wtf? Then they take payments for out-of-stock items without notifying the potential buyer.

    So WTF Banggood ??

    • that's a bummer, my one is already shipped and tracking number is working, GearBest has indeed improved the experience by the looks of it :)

    • Hey mate, you didn't accidently order the one without the remote control did you?
I noticed that it seems to be removed from the site today but the one with the remote still says "in stock, usually dispatched in one business day".
If you did order the one with the remote, thanks for the heads up as I was going to order one today.

  • I just checked and it comes with remote…so yer, I don't know what their story is. Yes it is showing 'in-stock' but this is NOT the case..

    Cheerson CX20 CX-20 Open-source Version Auto-Pathfinder Quadcopter RTF
Mode: Mode 2 (Left Hand Throttle)

here is a screenshot of their website advert from a few mins ago: showing clearly 'in-stock' etc…
    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/117899/42533/cx20_quad…

Weird why mine is 'on backorder' and no answer from them to explain :(

and heres a screenshot of my order showing 'back-order' :( and the pic showing the remote included:
    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/117899/42535/back_orde…

I'll try get someone to answer a live chat later.

  • That's weird, the BNF is back and it says in stock too. http://www.banggood.com/Cheerson-CX-20-Open-Source-Version-A…

Why anyone would buy this instead of the full version that comes with the controller and charger I would never know. It's only about $15 US cheaper.

    • Why would you assume it's missing controller and charger? Mine arrived today and controller and charger are included

      • they are talking about the Banggood version, not this one :)

  • +1

Mine showed up today. Remote is included. So is battery. There is no rotor protection or camera included.

Haven't tried it yet so can't say much

    • that's awesome, my delivery date is next Wednesday according to DHL O.o that was quick for you eh?

PS: tracking just updated saying it landed in Sydney, I might get it tomorrow after all by the looks of it :D

      • Mine landed yesterday 10pm in Melbourne and got delivered already. Didn't assume they would deliver it on a Sunday but they did

        • that's awesome, I got an extra battery which arrived on Wednesday, bought the prop guards and extra props which would take some 20 days or so to get here I think ;)

        • @enzioFirenze:

I have found some batteries on ebay, 2 for $54 so I ordered two packs of them. Didn't think about extra propeller. Will have to order some too.

Be careful when putting rotors on, two need to be screwed on in one, two in the other direction.

        • +1

@dosada: thanks for the heads up, I got mine today :D

        • @dosada: Did you get a chance to fly yours? I briefly tried flying it but it kept trying to topple before I took off, gotta do some calibration I think.

        • @enzioFirenze:

No, not yet. Yes you do need to calibrate it. Says even in the manual

        • @dosada: I did the normal compass calibration, the chinglish manual is a bit hard to comprehend ;) found this video helpful :)

        • @enzioFirenze: Hi, do you have the link to the prop guards..I think they r a good idea for beginner :)

        • @pookie: This is the one I bought mate :)

        • @enzioFirenze: thanks :)
