friend gave me his two years ago as a part had failed.. was cheap/easy to fix.
i decalcify twice a year and keep it clean.
since then, hasn't missed a heartbeat in the 500 or so coffees it has made.

my friend runs a coffee making school.. is really impressed with it and calls it a good lil machine.

milk froth results are a bit random but could be the man not the machine =p.
also, my older version has different froth wand.

I rekon.. a really good unit for $79.

(my post numero uno on here.. love the site)

  • so does this use pods? or…?

    • If you can't tell from the thumbnail, this machine isn't right for you…

    • Pods are crap - buy illy coffee if you arnt going to grind it!

    • It doesnt use pods

  • I have 2 if these machines, they are great - these were rate the best machines under $1000 by choice magazine.
Make sure you buy a good grinder perhaps a delonghi..
    - crema is great, great bargain!

they rated THIS the best machine under $1000? i think they need to fire their reviewers

    • +2

I'm sorry they are ok, but you must be mistaken.

      • Nope

        • +1

He's right. In fact even when they reviewed some machines over $1000 they made a mention of this machine. I have had one for over 4 years. The first died after 3 But wife and I have around 4 cups a day (2 each) plus extra when friends visited.

Even now people still rave about the coffee. And the crema is so great people with black coffee at first say, they wanted it black not white.

They dont need to fire the reviewers, they need pat them on the back. The other comapnies should jsut fire their product managers…

          BTW 3 years use 5000 cups = 3c a cup capital cost

  • oh pickup is in silverwater,

    nice

I'm going through the customer reviews and it's very very common for its seal to break and leak water after a few months of use, which is a worry (and dangerous). I wonder (hope) if Breville fixed the seal issue for the recent machines.. if not, it doesn't sound like it will last the warranty period.

    • +2

The seal you are talking about is the seal between the coffee holder and the unit. Which is a neoprene seal, which is user replaceable. So its not "dangerous" in an electrical sense.

There were a couple of complaints about the internal pipe breaking in 2 units, which happened to mine after 3 years of fairly heavy use.

One reviewer criticisng the seals had 3 units each breaking after 3 weeks. Now to me that sounds like they were over tightening the coffee holder, as this would be the same seal which every other unit has, which is user replaceable (under warranty you would just send the unit back)

Btw I replaced the seal on my first unit after 18 months and the part was the same as the Sunbeam cafe crema, so this is a common issue with all coffee machines. If you use them a lot, they do require some maintenace, like cleaning around the seal and there is a screw filter above the coffee holder that can clog with coffee grains.

Another negative review was criticisng the pods, which this unit doesn't use.

Some do tend to vibrate which is a negative, which if this is excessive maybe one of the causes of the broken internal connectors as well as the pressure back should the filter I mentioned above get clogged.

Like all these products from many manufacterers if you use them a lot, they will need some maintenance, check the reviews of other machines, there is similar criticism

Overall its a cheaper machine, which makes great coffee so for a trade off in price, I wasn't upset about replacing mine after 3 years, other than being without it, until I got to buy the next one.

      I was checking http://www.productreview.com.au/showitem.php?item_id=4024&ne…

      • Hi ozpete, thanks for the reply. I've actually never seen this machine myself but I was just worried because of this comment http://www.productreview.com.au/showitem.php?item_id=4024&ne…
which says "pulled apart to see where leak was coming from, found it spraying out of cheap looking plastic fitting on top of the pump. I'm an electrician by trade & found this situation to be potentially very dangerous."

      • The seal on my Cafe Modena Espresso started to leak water after several years. Seems I pushed down on the water tank with too much force. A bit of superglue fixed the crack holding the seal. Perhaps Breville should have phrased the instructions on the container as "Gently Push" rather than "Push Down".

But I have yet to see any leaking between the portafilter and the group head. And others use the machine with excessive force.

And yes the machine vibrates a lot. And it has height constraints. I found myself holding the tiny little cups while it brewed. I've since upgraded to the Breville 800ES that fits a mug. Although the coffee doesn't taste any better.

  • Would love to by it, but can't find it anymore??
