CHILL15

Great TV for $1015.75 (after you apply the code). I personally will not benefit from 4K resolutions. I also like the sony interface/build quality/aesthetics. To me this deal is a winner.

Should you really plonk down $1000 for a non-4K TV? I mean, 4K isn't going to go anywhere, and lots of streaming services are there already.

    Extra $170 for 4K here

    That's a no brainer really

Sony vs Samsung. I've seen the Samsung in real life played with it in store. I didn't like it. That's just my thoughts.

Issues with the Samsung : image interpolation (or in TV terminology upscaling). If I'm watching standard digital TV - 576p; it looks terrible on the Samsung. It didn't upscale well.

Where if I'm watching 576p content on this sony - it's much better. I really was impressed with the upscaling in sony.

High quality video input -this Samsung is better.
Low quality video input - this Sony is better.

Combination of both, I watch a lot of youtube videos/subscribed to a lot of channels - I'll take the sony.

      • I watch a lot of youtube videos/subscribed to a lot of channels

Wouldn't they be in 720p/1080p though?

        • They are - sorry bad example.

A lot of basic content that I watch is still streamed at 576p. Example Ten Play - outputs at 576P.

There is still A LOT of low quality videos floating around and to me image interpolation/upscaling is very important. The Samsung is not good as the sony.

Even playing 1st gen consoles : Nintendo wii, sometimes I'll connect my PC to the tv for some gaming (I don't have a gtx 1080.. so I'll be running 1920x1080… I don't want 4K content because the hardware won't support it).

What about if you want to use the TV on a HTPC? Why do you need 4K? Windows does not handle that well.

Then there is the often poor interpolation of lower resolution content.

Then there is the lack of 4K content.

Then there is the fact that Full HD looks great.

4K to me is like 3D, mostly useless, it is not even worthwhile doing it to "future proof", there is no such thing. Buy a 4K TV when you need a 4K TV, they will be better and cheaper then.

Thanks SamR - I'm glad you get it!

        • Yeah, as I got older I do not fall for the newer is better line like I always used to.

Almost every single time I paid extra to "future proof" it was a waste of money.

        • @SamR:

Agreed - 10 years ago, things were continually improving. Over the last 3 years or so - we have almost hit a wall in technology improvement.

How much better can a screen look? Full HD content is amazing compared to SD; but 1080p to 720p is even questionable at times.

      • How often do you buy big-screen TVs?

Mine has been going strong for over 6yrs, still yet to upgrade. FHD too.

So what's wrong with buying something for the next phase in technology, for what, 15% more?

Buy an updated Xbox/Playstation next year, play 4K games. No doubt it will be your all-in-one media centre, so 4K Netflix etc etc. You going to upgrade your TV after only a year because you want to take advantage of the better res?

Each to their own obviously, but 4K is different to 3D in terms of what it offers, and the longevity of the tech. It's only going to become more mainstream now, so why get the 'old' tech TV over a marginal amount of money.

50-55" FHD has been around this price for a while now. It's either a snap decision to do it, or wait until Boxing Day and either: a) save more on this tv, or b) get a 4K for this price, if not possibly less.

This TV was $1082 back in November last year! And has consistently fallen around this price

How can this price possibly be a reason to buy now?

        • Each to their own obviously, but 4K is different to 3D in terms of what it offers, and the longevity of the tech. It's only going to become more mainstream now, so why get the 'old' tech TV over a marginal amount of money.

          • because the old tech plays our current content a lot better than the new tech does.
        • @khonfahm:

          current

There's the problem, thinking in the now. Only a matter of time before FTA channels decide to have a digital data stream

        • I guess for some people they find the value in 4k. I personally don't.

I think there are many reasons to not get it.

Also image scaling is important to me, sony is the best at this IMO. 4K sony TV's, 55" are still $1600+. In that case I'm comparing $1600 to $1015. So I'll take the $1015 deal.

  • no deal,
can have 4k for the price

As others have pointed out, 4K is largely irrelevant for most people. It's great to impress your friends standing close up to it but for practical purposes it makes no difference. I don't many people would normally be sitting under 3.5 feet away from this TV to notice the difference in resolution.

    https://carltonbale.com/does-4k-resolution-matter/

It's really just technology for technology's sake. TV manufacturers need new features to make you feel the need to upgrade to the latest model, and this is a perfect example.

Yep; and in some cases it negatively affects the performance of your existing hard ware. Eg.) a PC connected to the TV.

Note the Sony is 120Hz vs Samsung 60Hz panel. So for anything other than UHD the Sony is the better set.
