As with a lot of giveaways, these giveaways should be taken off OzBargain. These are completely useless for people who are not diabetic, they do not come with testing strips, and people would just order them and throw them away, wasting the resources for people who actually need them.

    • +29

We shouldnt punish the diabetic who might get value out of this deal just because some people might abuse it.

      • -1

Chuck it in the forums then.

Exact same reason as these takedowns:

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/159761?page=1#comment-3612…

It just doesn't apply to the majority of OzBargainers.

        • +4

Those 2 things were both taken down because the merchant requested it. Totally different reasons.

"These are completely useless for people who are not diabetic, they do not come with testing strips, and people would just order them and throw them away,"

Exactly. So it is useless to someone whos not diabetic so it is unlikely they will abuse it.

        • -2

          @Lenneth:

Shit for horses is useless for people who don't have horses but guess what, people still OzBargained it.

          @smileymiwo:

We still shouldn't punish everyone from seeing this deal just because some people might do the wrong thing, because some people can still benefit from it. If you don't like the deal you can just… ignore it?

        • +2

I don't agree that posts should be censored / removed just because they may not interest some people - majority of stuff on here doesn't interest everyone (E.g. There are location-specific deals posted which apply to less people but are still worth posting - e.g. Adelaide SA - population 1.2 million). According to Diabetes Australia, 1.7 million Australians have diabetes including 280 new people per day. That's a lot of people who may be interested. OP has said "Diabetics Only" and indicated they make money from giving them away like Gilette and their razors.

        • Could combine those two deals and get condoms for horses?

      • +9

while I agree with above comments, I wouldn't have known about this post and been able to get one for my dad unless it was posted by the op. I'm personally not going to exploit the post, am getting one for someone who can use it. Guess it just depends on how ethical the ozbargain community is. Similar concerns with the Grill'd free burger for people participating in the fundraiser post.

        • +1

Same^^^ While I agree with above comments, I wouldn't have known about this post..
Just got one for mum, her's has actually been playing up and its her 70th birthday tommorow :)

love the deal thank you very much Lenneth <3

    • +3

You are such a brave woman to campaign so openly against exploitation of this deal, a stance which a lot of members here might attack you for. It's such a shame we haven't seen more comments like this on previous deals.

      Good on you!

    • People with serious endocrine disorders regularly require the use of a glucose meter & strips, but there is no subsidy them.
The whole 'diabetics only' thing is ridiculous. Abuse it if you need it. Thanks OP.

    • +4

As a type 1 Diabetic i am very glad this deal was posted. If this were posted in the forums and did not make the front page there would have been a good chance i would not have seen it. So thanks Kenneth and keep up the good work. For type 1 (or insulin dependent) diabetics the testing strips are subsidised considerably under the NDSS. I would spend under $100 a year on strips with approximately 6 - 8 tests a day as apposed to hundreds or thousands of dollars if they were not covered. Hopefully this is enough of a deterrent for non-diabetics to not exploit the deal. Though most T1Ds will have there daily driver glucose monitor these are always fantastic as an emergency meter for in the car or to leave at the office.

    • Smiley is 100% right. Let's not be naive and think there aren't leeches on here who won't abuse the deal to make a quick buck. No doubt this deal would have been targeted at places/websites where mostly diabetics would be taking advanatage of this great deal….. now it's on OzB. As great at this community is, there are many people who will abuse this deal and take it away from others who relly need it.

  • +5

The test strips is expensive and has short expiratory date. There is no oem.

    • +8

Ikr. My dad bought a small packet the other day for $5. It quickly adds up over the course of a year\lifetime even. If this deal can save a diabetic from buying a meter or give him a spare one in case he forgets it somewhere, I think that is a good thing.

      • the federal government has recently stopped subsidising glucose strips for anyone not on insulin

        • that's actually not true….

        • +1

I fully support the government's action as these companies are milking the health system badly.

        • +1

You are incorrect. NDSS is still subsidising for patients who are not on insulin - they just have to go for a review with their GP (which they should be doing anyways) after 6 months of their first strip purchase under the NDSS scheme, and their doctor can choose to extend their NDSS membership for another 6 months (with unlimited extensions).

Therefore there is essentially no limit to how long a non-insulin dependent diabetic can get strips for, as long as their doctor thinks they clinically need it.

Please make sure you are spreading the correct information.

      • Is it worth it for the lock in?

Or are all strips the same price?

        • Not only are the strips manufacturer specific but even model specific. And they also expire.

        • All strips are pretty much the same price (~$50 for 100 strips) so it doesn't matter who you lock into in terms of price. It's all about which functions you want in your machine.

  • -8

    Mods remove this "deal"

  • +3

Don't diabetics get most machines for free anyway?

    • Actually no. This is the first freebie I have had and I was diagnosed 10 years ago.

      • +1
      • +1

You should subscribe to the Diabetes Australia branch in your state. They send out a magazine (they do in Victoria at least) and there are always offers in every edition for free meters. Definitely no need to pay for one. Roche also has a never-ending cashback offer on its meters so even if you have to buy one in a pharmacy you usually get at least 90% of the cost back.

  • +2

These are always free from Accu-Chek and some other sites.

    • Just a myth

    • -1

You are clearly uneducated regarding diabetes.

    • -1

Why the negs? That is pretty much bang on except for the exercise part. Type 2 is a chronic disease and it is a part of the metabolic disease suite of diseases. The standard of care for type 2 is completely wrong atm.

      • -2

Exercise does play a part. Whether it be structured exercise eg going to the gym or playing sport. It could be incidental exercise eg walking to the train station/work etc.

However diet is the main issue with type 2 diabetes. Have a look at anyone with type 2 and there is a good chance they are overweight due to eating crap and their exercise involves getting off the couch to go to the toilet and back to the couch

  • +1

Thanks op, got an upgrade for my dad :).

  • +1

Really hope people aren't getting these for the sake of it, these promotions are so useful for those such as my partner who otherwise is stuck with old meters which give errors every second time it tries to read blood, meaning you've got to prick again and draw more blood (which hurts..)

    • Abbott labs always has freebies going. Accuchek not so much. Thats why I jumped on this and got my meter of choice (Aviva Connect)

  • +3

Accu-Check always have there machines for free. you can pick them up from any chemist collect the receipt and go to https://www.accu-chekvoucher.com.au/ to claim the $40 dollars you paid back.
You can also upgrade from whatever brand to Accu-Check for free, They call it the VIP program.
    p.s. am not a rep. :)

  • +3

Please use your common sense and read further than the word "free."

    • -2

Sorry, I can't do it, once I see the word "free" I instantly stop reading and start clicking.

The word "free" was actually the only reason I read your post.

  • -3

Thanks OP, I got all three of them, If you want the most expensive one just say that your already using the Accu-Chek Mobile.

  • These are also free on Ebay by cashback redemption and can actually get more back then you paid.

    • +1

      dont forget the needle prices

      • +1

        its called NDSS

needles are free and those test strips for example are around $14

        • @PW: ndss subsides it… Ranging anywhere from that to $0

        • And if you are on a pension, even less. I pay 60c/50 for my Connect test strips Cheaper even that my previous Freestyle Lite. My only problem is that my regular pharmacy doesnt stock them so I have to remember to order well ahead of time

        • +1

@diondai1: you guys are referring to different item, but both correct. PW is referring to "lancets" which is the needle that pricks your finger to get the blood out and they are not subsidised, there are many different type of lancets depends on which lancets device you have, but at the end of the day, they achieve the same goal of pricks your finger. and what you're referring to is the needle which you use for insulin and yes they are subsidised (ie $0 )for people who use insulin under the NDSS scheme

        • +1

@diondai1: NDSS only subsides insulin injection needles. You have to pay for your lancets

        • That's what I was trying to tell the above posters. I don't have diabetes, but I know some friends do and they have to pay for the lancets in full price even with the NDSS card.

  • This will answer a few of the incorrect statements above https://static.diabetesaustralia.com.au/s/fileassets/diabete…

  • -3

thanks OP will dropship on ebay

    • +3

You are such a brave man, to exploit this deal in order to bring it to more people's attention. That's very entrepreneurial.
      Good on you!

      • -1

Too much effort, but I don't think it would fall under exploit as those buying the units really need them,

        • Would you be selling them for free?

        • -1

@outlander: something like "BNWT Pick Your Device free click & Collect" $28.81

  • Damn, I don't have diabetes but good deal anyway.

    • -1

It's almost worth getting it just for the deal.

  • If you are on two different tablets for diabetes or on insulin you can walk into the pharmacy and have your pick of a few different ones free. Proof is needed as in prescriptions. There are more modern ones for insulin users that download data to your smart phone computer ect. If you do not have an ndss card the strips will cost you around $70 a box. $16.50 for ndss, health card + ndss about $2.40 I think and saftey net + health care card + ndss $0

    • I went to my local GP and told them my fiancé just found out she had gestational diabetes and they gave me the whole kit for free.

  • -3

    Always free. Not a bargain.

    • Not always free, in my local chemist they cost quite a bit. Thanks OP for letting us know
