Air China is offering return flights to Warsaw, Poland from Sydney or Melbourne for $776 during November.
Note: This is a cheap flight but is not for the faint hearted and suited to the tightarse adventurer/backpacker. See below.

Pros

  • Price (~$1350 for the next best price)
  • Flights arrive in morning in Beijing, Leave late at night. Allows you to explore Beijing without needing a hotel. Check out the Forbidden City & other touristy stuff.
  • Beijing has a 72 hour visa free transit policy.
  • Once you are in Warsaw, you can fly budget airlines to other European destinations for cheap.

Cons

  • 21 hour layover. This isn't a time any normal person can stay at the airport and due to the layover being in the day would be tricky to book a normal nights stay. A 1nt stay at a Holiday Inn is about $100 but I'm sure you can find cheaper places.
  • Air China is rated 87 out of the top 100 airlines according to Skytrax and is rated 3 star. Qantas is 4 stars.
  • In total, each way is about ~41 hours whereas you can get flights (twice the price) for 27 hours.

If I was traveling on my own or backpacking with a friend I'd do this but definitely not for families/couples.

Cheapest prices are via Travelgenio/Go to Gate but BYOJet has them for $800 and Air China direct is $812.

  • Accom in Beijing is not cheap. There's a nice enough airbnb 20 minutes from the airport though. Cheap and the owner was nice.
