Just to point out, that's at least $800 if you buy here, probably more like $1000. It gets good reviews and would do most people's needs.

  • Would you guys recommend Yamaha over Denon?
    And how about Yamaha VX_781?

    Thanks guys.

    • +6

If you look at the review above you'll see they claim the Denon AVR-X2300W is comparable/slightly better than this amp. But that's only true if you can get it for this price!

Personally, owning a Yamaha amp, I have no problem with them and think the Denon looks a bit of a lump. The general rule of thumb is as the first number goes up the spec increases (as does the price). The last two numbers are like a version, so 581 is a later model than 579 etc. If a model has the spec that you need, the increase in model number is unlikely to help much.

      • Thanks so much for the explanation sane. Very helpful. So does Yamaha position this V series their high end model or just an entry level?

        • +4

It's pretty much their main offering.

In general the 3/4 models are gimped in some way - poorer quality amps, no key functionality, etc. For example the 381 has no Atmos, no network bits, etc.

The 5/6 models pretty much have what most people want, with the 6 having more power, more input ports.

The 7 usually has 2 output ports, and more power. Above that it's more power and a few amp tweaks usually.

As you can probably guess, it's pretty much a common design, just tweaked for different price points - hence why I say work out what you need and buy just that.

Particularly if it's a cheap as this.

        • @sane: Well said. Price is key here because don't forget… this Amp will be obsolete/superseded within 12-18 months! Not saying it's bad at all… just saying it's best to buy this type of modern AV gear as cheaply as possible because if you want to keep up with tech you'll be replacing it pretty soon. Different revisions of HDMI, higher res audio & video formats & decoding, the list just goes on & on & on. An Amp such as this will suit the majority of the masses to a tee and is what Yamaha does really well.

        • @SteveAndBelle: >this Amp will be obsolete within 12-18 months!

          No it won't.

        • +1

          @xdreamyst:

There is little difference between the RX-V models and the equivalent Aventage model, they are basically only cosmetic differences, some models may have extra connectivity options.
The Aventage models also have 4 year warranty vs 2 year for the RX-V models

        • @xdreamyst: Yeah, fair enough. 'Obsolete' was the wrong word. That's what you get for commenting while busy at work ;)

        • @SteveAndBelle:

It's in some aspects diminishing returns.

For instance, my amp is the 667 - many years ago and without network and Atmos etc. However it still does most of the things that matter, and Atmos over DTS-MA isn't a massive change, and isn't well supported in new content.

As such, even though this is cheap, I'll be hanging on to mine for a while yet - at least till 4K internet streaming at decent quality becomes a thing.

I'd say you'd get at least 5-10 years out of this - before 3D, 360 degree 8K VR with positional audio is a thing.

        • +3

@xdreamyst: Nah mate, wrong Steve. I'm just a Vintage Hifi nerd who used to dabble in multi-channel gear and who still has a small HT setup but I now prefer the far more rewarding, accurate sound of 2-Ch stuff. Movies through multi-channel gear is a heap of fun but to me nothing beats sitting in front of a simple setup of two speakers, an Amp and a music source. The high-end gear can be amazing but what really impresses me is the incredible sound that can be had from Gumtree & eBay finds for next to nothing. Like an old car, a great bonus on top of the obvious is that the vintage gear usually appreciates in value too whereby most modern stuff depreciates rapidly. Big Yamaha fan though as it's usually the stuff that stands the test of time. After repairing & restoring many Amps over the last several years most others develop issues well before the Yamaha gear.

        • @sane:

+1 for the use of the adjective 'gimped'. I thought I was the only one!

    • I've had Yamaha (4066) and Denon (1602, 1509) and Marantz (7100) amps.

They're all equivalent for audio quality. They're all roughly the same for features.

They're all built to decent quality. Some are now made in China, but the quality is still there.

I'm currently on Yamaha and really like it. I will probably buy another Yamaha for the next upgrade.

    • I've owned the Yamaha RX-V 373 for a while now, and im really happy with the sound and features. the V581 is basically the same as the 373, only it does 7.1, airplay, and bluetooth. But the price of this is about the same as what i got my 373 for.

I bought my 373 in around 2012 ish for about this price, and recently when 4K became more popular i checked to see if my 373 would do 4K passthrough, and glad to say that it does. Shows (at least to me) that Yamaha really think about future-proofing their units.

Works mint like clockwork despite being used nearly all day every day for about 3 years

    • 681 is 100eur more (-VAT, so roughly 80 eur). Shipping shouldn't change too much I would imagine.

  • I auditioned the Sony equivalent with this. The Sony had better surround processing but has an input lag which is a pain to tune. (can be tuned by changing the video output lag/buffer).

At this price point, there's always a audio video sync issue due to lag. Usually fixable on settings but UI is a pain.

  • Any idea, how much is the delivery to Australia?

  • Also consider this one from DS http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Pioneer-7-2-Channel-AV-Receiver-w… for $599.20, which comes with 3 year Australian warranty. It's a bit more expensive than the previoulsy posted deal for the VSX930 but still a good option. The Pioneer also has more HDMI inputs.

      • i just bought the VSX-930 yesterday.. kinda regret it now.. is it possible to cancel orders from ebay?

        • +2

Only one HDMI output on the Yamaha and the VSX-930 has two, so not as good if you want that proper second zone.

        • @xdreamyst: im more worried about sound quality. is the yamaha like you said much superior compared to the pioneer?

        • @gembel: The only thing that can judge sound quality is your ears. Doesn't really matter what other people say. It's what sounds good to you. That goes with speaker selection too.

      • I also got it from the previous deal. It is a great Amp, the surrounding is great.

As I can see, this Yamaha receiver doesn't Upscale to 4K? and multi-zone support in Pioneer. so the Pioneer is a clear winner there.

        • 4k tv's will have 4k upscaling built in, and is likely to be better quality than lower range avr, so 4k upscaling not needed on the avr.
This Yamaha model supports zone B, but same source only, can't use different source than is playing in main room.

        • @Blackrose: 4K and Multi-zone are just a couple of things I pointed out. There are some more features in the Pioneer one than this Yamaha model such as Pioneer more power (W) per channel compared to Yamaha. More HDMI ports on Pioneer and DTS Neo 6.

  • Awesome price but only 4 hdmi inputs kills the deal imo….

  • +1

Is this a decent improvement over the Yamaha RX-V667?

Any issues with warranty? Do I have to send it back or can it be repaired locally

  • +1

Is the language going to be in french ? I am guessing the power plug and voltage will be different.

    • yea i'm wondering the same…

      • +1

Cut cord and rewire an Aussie plug.

Not worth the effort when you can buy an adaptor for $0.92 delivered at Aliexpress -
        eBay $1.00 delivered.

        • +4

Just be careful with these adapters and plug them in with the outlet switch off. They tend to wobble a lot and you may hear the cracking sound when plugging it in and out.

    • The voltage should be the same (230 V)

    • Now I am worried. Just bought this item, but I should have found out if the Menu is in French only before. I have emailed them now asking for that information and advising to cancel the order if it is French only. If I don't get a quick answer from them, I will have to cancel before they do the shipping. Any advice, could it be wiser to cancel right now?

      • +2

        Don't panic

The manual says English is the default language - you can choose between that and several others. Just configure with the remote.

      • +1

No problem, you can choose between 8 languages (mostly europeans + chinese and japanese)

  • +1

Never owned an AV receiver before. Which speakers are good/recommended to go with this piece?

    • +1

I bought my first A/V receiver about two months back from Eastwood HiFi (now located in Dural). Following is the config:

      Receiver: Yamaha RX V481 ($640)
Front speakers: Yamaha NS 555 ($750)
      Subwoofer: Yamaha SW200 ($400)

Here's the link to their speaker deals: http://www.eastwoodhifi.com.au/specials-speakers.htm

They got 2 demo rooms with different receiver/speaker setups. Highly recommend you to go and listen before buying any speakers.

      • Thanks mate, will look into it. Eastwood is close to my suburb.

        • Now they are located in Dural: 16Q North Business Centre,829 Old Northern Road,Dural.

    • +1

Lots of good choices for speakers - Polk, Klipsch - but I'd go with Paradigm. Something like the Monitor series. Rule of thumb is "spend three times as much on speakers as the amplifier". Because this amp is normally $1000, you should be spending $3000 on speakers. Hopefully you can find a 50% off sale on speakers :-D

You'll be disappointed if you attach $500 speakers from JB HiFi to this amp. This is a mid-range amp. It deserves mid-range speakers.

    • when i bought my AVR in 2012, there was a lot of good stuff being said about Jamo Wenge speakers

      https://www.amazon.com/Jamo-426-HCS-WENGE-5-Piece/dp/B003GGX…

get this and a decent sub and you're good to go

      • +1

Lol. Wenge is a type of timber, and the colour of the speakers.

        Which incidentally are jamo s 426's :)

  • +2

Looks pretty cool at a decent price. Can anyone please recommend some speakers to go with this?

  • +1

So tempting… But before pulling the trigger, I thought it might be prudent to measure my entertainment unit, which (just) accommodates my Sony AV receiver. 161 mm high. The Yamaha is 161.9 mm. Sideshow Bob rake grumble

    • At least you have some room. I have a converted fireplace withdoors so my max depth is 250mm yet to find a amp that can fit :(.

  • not sure if I should upgrade from the Onkyo NR-609…doesnt seem too much of an "upgrade"…or is it…mmm….

  • +1

What about warranty? Does Yomaha do international warranty?

  • -1

    how can you speak French.

    • +2

I guess you could go to classes and learn.

  • I've been pleased to buy into the MusicCast ecosystem. While the RX-V681 for ~$120 more offers extra inputs and power (which some people don't care about), the zone 2 speakers as an extra MusicCast zone is compelling. There are some things you can't do with Zone 2 (i.e. have its own DLNA address, use certain inputs), but given you can 'link' MusicCast zones (ala Sonos), you can basically get anything to play to it.

  • Thanks OP. Got one. Been looking to upgrade my old amp for a while now. Great price and features.

    • Did you just buy one? Wow deal already expired.

      • I bought it at 12 this afternoon.

        • I bought one around 10 this morning. Got a bit concerned in case the setup is in French only, but some posters here reckon, you can select the language at the setup. I have nevertheless asked Amazon to confirm that before dispatch.

        • @Bluering48:

Yes, you can change the language, and the manual is also in all the languages IIRC. Otherwise you can grab the PDF easily enough. If you look at the images, you'll see that even the printed stuff on front and back is in English (which must annoy the french, a lot).

        • Mine arrived today, that was quite a quick delivery. I don't have proper surround sound speakers, I am using a few of the speakers I already have and have set it on stereo for the time being. One disappointment, the speakers cables are connected to the Amp in that old stupid and awkward way and it is a pain in the butt, wished it had banana plug connection. Let me know how you are going, thanks.

        • @Bluering48:

          When did yours ship?

  • Do you guys who run the full 7 speaker setups for home theatre use wired speakers or some sort of wireless speakers?

I would love surround, but to do it I'd have speaker cable running all over the lounge room which would look crap.

    • It's a refurb with 1 year warranty for $200 more.

V6 rather than V5 though. And Australian warranty.

Also is the V679 one series older than the Vx81 series?

      • So this one is better or the V679? Still prefer to buy from local if price is not too much difference.

        • V581 is lower spec than V679, but V581 is a newer model.

          V679 > V579

Not too sure what extras were added between the Vx79 series and the Vx81 series.

The V681 is also on special for 399 Euro at Amazon.

If you need the extra power and 1 extra input that the V681/V679 provide over the V581, I would have thought the brand new V681 from Amazon is the better buy compared to a refurb V679.

If you don't need the slight increase in power and 1 extra HDMI input, I'd go the V579 - but there are people on here who know a lot more about this stuff than me, so defer to them.

  • I presume this is the entry level receiver for Yamaha? How is this compared to Denon X1300W?

    • Mid level.

As I said above, the Denon comparable is the AVR-X2300W - which it is on roughly the same level as.

  • anyone know how this stacks up with the Onkyo-NR609?

    • +2

Main differences are the Bluetooth inclusions. That is a good Amp and I personally would be reluctant to upgrade to it. The money is better spent on an Apple TV, Sonos or Chromecsdt to achieve a similar result

      • thanks mate, good idea… :)

      • thanks for the detail writeup mate. I'm in exactly the same situation, I bought the NR609 from Amazon DE and DID HAVE the HDMI board issue. Luckily I persisted at hassling Onkyo and Ambertech, Ambertech had finally fixed my amp for free!! So hopefully I can get some more years out of it lol. I think I will do what @chrig said, and spend the $ on a android TV box (not apple fan) so I can stream more music formats…I know my NR609 streams every format this Yamaha does excep DSD…

        • I've found Ambertech are pretty good to deal with. I had bought a number of refurbished Onkyo/Integra amps from their eBay store. A couple had the HDMI board issue and whilst it was out of warranty there was no issue in fixing it

  • +4

why is everything in Australia so expensive.

    • Because consumers slam money down under!!

    • We get bent over down under and most non-professionals are willing to take it.

  • +2

Must resist… I know it's not a high end model, but I still wonder why DAB radio isn't standard in receivers these days.

  • +1

wonder how much Denon X2300W sell for now? Seem to be little bit superior in its feature

  • This is a good price! Bummer about it having just 1 HDMI output. Something very important if you plan to use your AVR with a TV and say a projector.

  • Seems like a great price and good amp.

I'm still running my HTR6065/RXV673 that I got from the JB HiFi deal years ago. I checked the specs and the 673 is still a more powerful amp, so no real compelling reason to upgrade as yet.

The new amp does have more wifi/bluetooth capabilities. Interestingly, you can now pair a set of bluetooth headphones to the amp!

  • +1

Holy buzzwords, Batman. AVR Makers must be having a hard time making people buy new models.

    • I agree. Personally development I my opinion has stagnated since 2010 with the introduction of ARC audio return channel. There will be some arguments towards the wireless technology however with Apple TVs and chromecasts filling that gap this negates it

Yes there are some new audio codecs however for the majority we don't see them realizing the existing ones correctly

      • Well, sometimes Amazon promotes new products from famous brands with "real" sales >50% and will send you an email to ask if the customer want to give his/her opinion about the item, of course it's optional.

I'm not a deal hunter so I only saw V moda and Yamaha doing that kind of insane sales but on european's bargain websites, they found a lot of great sales because it's often not in the "today's deals".

        • Are you able to list some of the bargain websites?

  • Just a quick question (a lot of knowledgeable people in this thread and I thought I would take this opportunity to ask some questions I had, thank you in advance):

If I have a good TV and a gaming console, and an apple tv [can take care of casting, streaming music etc) - why would I need more features? Instead of buying something cheap like this : https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/yamaha-home-theatre-system-60… . I've heard this and it sounds better than most $800+ sound bars.

    The rated power is :
Rated Output Power (1kHz, 1ch driven)
    100 W (6ohms, 0.9% THD)
Rated Output Power (20Hz-20kHz, 2ch driven)
    70 W (6ohms, 0.09% THD)
Maximum Effective Output Power (1kHz, 1ch driven) (JEITA)
    135 W (6ohms, 10% THD)
    - which seems comparable? or am I missing something?

I don't quite understand home theatre audio. With car audio it's a very clear(excuse the pun) difference. Amp output is for example 400w rms vs 200w rms… here it seems like peak/rms power outputs are similar.

I would assume the amp side of it, would have similar circuitry equipment - in store I can't tell the difference with sound from different amps (can definitely tell with different speakers!!). Can people tell the difference in sound quality from different amps(of same brand)?

Again, I don't understand why amps get so expensive as they move up the range:

If you're playing the audio 'straight' from the output source with the no enhancements (should I be using enhancements) what is the point?

    Thanks guys :)

    • +1

These mid-range receivers are actually several things in one package. First, a surround sound decoder with support for Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby True HD, DTS HD, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Second, a multi-channel amplifier. Third, a digital sound processor (DSP) that can alter the sound, e.g. turning 2-ch stereo into 5.1-ch "matrix" surround. Fourth, an equaliser with presets and tonal controls. Fifth, an HDMI switchbox with remote control and on-screen display. Sixth, a built-in radio. Seventh, the ability to receive DLNA, AirPlay, or Internet radio via Ethernet or WiFi.

Sound bars are pretty good for the money, but you can't "choose" your speakers, and you don't get all the features above (some of them, but not all). With components you can pick speakers that suit you, and your room, and your music. The amplifier will support almost any speakers you choose.

The entry-level surround sound system you linked is pretty good too for the money, but don't expect too much. The speakers are a bit on the cheap side and it will be underwhelming at high volume.

Don't be too worried about wattage. It's all a bit of nonsense and trickery with numbers. They claim 100W but side-by-side with a component system also at 100W, the component system will be louder and sound better.

  • I'm still running my RX-V675, which I got and posted here at the time 13-6-2013 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/106723. It hasn't missed a beat. Been the best AVR I bought. Would buy another Yamaha again.

  • Anybody know how this one compares?

    https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-VSX-1131-7-2-Channel-Receiver…

Yes it's slightly more but from what I can tell it's got more bang for buck?

    • Would have gone for this one but it's 120v :(

  • +1

You know what's weird… the 681 has 6 hdmi in ports.. which is great. But only 3 of them are HDCP2.2. Whereas the cheaper 581 model has 4 hdmi in ports, but all 4 are HDCP2.2.

  • Prices in title are wrong, or do you mean rx-v481(not 581) = $391 and rx-v581 (not 681) = $495?

    • I'm updating the deal depending on the stock (the deal for the V581 expired)

  • Am I doing something wrong? The deal link takes me to the RX-V681, so does the link in the post.

How do I get the rxv 581?
