  • Cathay forgot to mention that the sales end 11/11/2016.

Heathcliff, it's me, your Cathay, I've come home…

I guess Cathay needs some quick cash after recently issuing a profit downgrade.

    • +1

That's a mighty long bow to draw.
All airlines put on sales. Qantas just made squillions and paid out fully franked dividends. They still have sales. So there goes your theory.

      • What theory?

There's no denying Dick Smith consistently issued discounted gift cards as a means to keep their head above water. And if Cathay sells 5,000 seats in this sale that's definitely a reasonable cash injection.

I'm not suggesting Cathay is in the same boat as DSE, but I do find the timing of this sale amusing. I don't have a theory, I just think it's an amusing coincidence.

        • Cathay are routinely among the most expensive airline when it comes to their fares and popular routes yet they are performing much worse than many of their 'cheaper' competitors. Relying solely on your name in the airline business is not enough these days…

        • +2

My guess is that there is no theory. It's just a off season time. And every airline would be trying their best to sell seats. Etihad had a RTW sale for just around $1500 a while ago, and until last week Philippine airline was selling tickets to bangkok, Taipei, New Delhi etc for within $500. Going to most of Chinese cities in Oct and Nov, you can find tickets under $600 now. So, nothing particular. If you want to point fingers, the amount of new routes that have been opened this year by Chinese airlines might have contributed to the low fares as well.

    • And they scrapped their profit outlook altogether
      There goes their yield.

How did you get $818 for Seoul from Mel, I'm seeing $1080

  • Is early april good to visit Beijing and as a minimum how much time would one need to see major attractions?

    • Not too cold, not too hot.

At least 4 days incl Great Wall.

      • tks

    • late april is good timing and you need 5 to 6 days minimum to see major ones(Forbidden city (1), summer palace(2), Great wall(3)Temple of Heaven(4) (these are world heritage, must seeee!) then if you have time >>>Prince Gong Mansion and surrounding (5), Yonghe lama Temple(6).

    • I've been to Beijing twice, once last year in May, and once in October several years earlier.

April/May is an excellent time to go weather wise. It can be a bit windier around this time which is great for clearing the pollution. I had 4 perfectly blue clear sky days last may. By contrast, my previous visit in October, the city was thick with smog, visibility was little over 500 meters.

3 full rushed days absolute minimum for the city, and 1 day for the wall.

      • Should add though that if you spend longer, you will still have plenty to do. I would say 6 days is about optimal.

      • We had amazing weather in mid-late April this year - clear blue skies everywhere we looked. Apparently it's peak season for tourism for this fact.

Although I quite liked visiting Beijing in Winter but I enjoy wintry places in general. Plus, it felt almost magical when it started snowing atop the great wall.

I'd actually argue if you're only viewing sights and not experiencing the culture you can really get it done with a private or small group tour in 2-3 days. However, it's definitely worth staying a couple extra days to try more food and soak up a little more of Beijing. I've posted a small group tour itinerary I did a few years ago below:

Day 1: Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Silk Factory, Summer Palace
Day 2: Ming Tombs, Great Wall, Birds Nest (Outside)

Personally didn't enjoy the Ming Tombs very much. On a more recent trip we did a similar private tour but swapped out the Tombs for a hutong tour.

        • Just be aware there is potential for sandstorms in April which can cause significant air quality issues with trapped pollution in addition to the sand. Google it.

        • Forbidden City and Summer Palace on ok be day. That is ridiculous. Ming tombs and great wall on same day that is stupid. Summer Palace is a whole day in itself to actually enjoy it and walk around the lake. I'm not a fan of the forbidden city, prefer he one in Shenyang much more.

In fact going to the better parts of the great wall (Gueubeiku) make for one long day in itself.

  • Isn't VISA for China kinda expensive?

    • +5

      I think you mean visa.

VISA is everywhere you want to be.

    • +2

Depends what you mean by "kinda" …. its around $80.

    • +4

      Yep. $109.50 (https://www.visaforchina.org/SYD_EN/yyxz/276210.shtml).

If you have more time than money, no need for food and no baggage you could go with AirAsia for ~$200 less to make up for it.

      • Do you get a cheaper visa if you pay with VISA

      • Yep. $109.50

Yikes, that's a big increase since last year.

    • +4

      For everything else, theres MasterCard.

    • Australia tourist visa is even more expensive, starts from $135 I think..

    • +2

If you want to OzBargain your trip to China, you can do a dog leg, fly in from Australia and depart to a third country, do six days in Shanghai with Jiangsu Province, and Zhejiang Province or three days in other places: http://lawandborder.com/china-72-hour-transit-visa-waiver/

I will do this next time as I didn't go to the water towns outside of Shanghai when I had a 30 day visa on my first trip. Gonna dog leg a BKK-PVG-MNL or something.

  • Not as good as last year sale for school holidays from Perth. Cathay gave the low sale price for April 2016 school holidays in last year sale. This year looks like they are not offering similar sale price for April 2017 school holidays.

  • +1

Great timings. Will book in for some holidays next year.
Any sale soon from Sydney to London or Delhi or New York?

  • Good deal, bought tickets last week and now they're cheaper by $350. :(

  • +2

No cc surcharge. Not bad Cathay.

As cheap as it gets to mainland China on CX, though they have had much cheaper fares for Korea/Japan in the past.

  • Deals for SYD <-> HK at the end of November are still pricey, it's only cheaper if your flight leaves during the beginning of the month.

  • I think it's good enough for my holiday 31Aug~2Oct17 to HK for $681 as a direct flight, thx!

  • what do you guys think $850 to Japan return OR wait for an airasia deal for flights in mid 2017?

  • Hmmmmm the 2017 flights to Thailand seem rather expensive …

  • Oh no… I just bought 1 from china southern 2 days ago when the price was up. Disappoited.

  • Anybody knows how much about the Cathay luggage allowance ex Australia to Asian destinations ?

  • Can't justify how flying to Shanghai & Beijing is ~$100 cheaper than just flying to HK. Anyone know if we can just skip the Mainland trips and stay in Hong Kong?
