Yes, they are quite popular among home-users, most set them up to be a general file server/NAS or hyper-visor, whatever floats your boat really.

It requires a little bit of research and patience to get up and running, but if you don't mind tinkering then you'll be fine, luckily there's heaps of resources on Google/forums though.

    • It is good to be aware that since 2014:
"HP server customers are about to get an unwelcome surprise when they need to update firmware or apply a service pack. Effective later this month, those downloads, which often fix critical bugs, will require either a current warranty or an extended support agreement".

"Previously, that firmware upgrade was available to anyone, regardless of the server's warranty status or whether it was under a support agreement".

      More here: http://www.zdnet.com/article/hp-to-begin-charging-for-firmwa…

      • agreed! buggers, they followed Cisco..

what you can do though, is find the name of the ProLiant support pack DVD ISO image and then plug that into google, you will eventually find either http or torrent links for it

    • Mine runs Windows Server 2012 - it backs up all the PCs in my home, runs Plex and other streaming media stuff, and provides central storage for files. It's awesome.

You don't have to be a pro to set it up, Server Essentials is pretty user friendly, but there is definitely a learning curve so you need to be keen - it's a project/hobby.

    • I bought one for use as a Nas …..you can run the synology software on it. Being Intel based it's more flexible than arm based Nas units so you can also run freenas on it if you don't like synology.

    • Do pp buy microserver for home use ?

Yes, although it is towards the "high end" for home use. Normal homes might find it a bit complicated.

      I use mine for:

      • Virtualisation
      • Plex Server
      • NAS
      • Backups
      • Router (pfsense)

Wait, you RAISED the price of the printer and are calling it a bargain? What kind of business practice is this? I'm on hold with ACCC right now. /s

    • I'm sure they would let you pay $1 less and you get a $50 voucher instead of a $100 voucher….

    • Call Today Tonight while you're at it! :D

    • @Putnum, Are you really calling ACCC!!!! Do the math? Its ozbargain way. Don't waste your time..

  • Hi Store rep,
can you do a deal on LogitechZ506 SURROUND SPEAKERS 5.1, http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Brand-New-Logitech-Z506-5-1-Surro…
our store website list it as $88.95 and there are stores sell it below 100 on ebay.
    thanks so much

  • Any 4TB NAS HD deals? Toshiba?

    Cheers!

  • Is this deal better value than https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/270596? Just want to know if I am missing anything. It is same Microserver right?

    • Beat me to it :)

    • -4

if you value the eBay voucher at $100 - then you could say you get the microserver for $200 delivered :)

(assuming you spend that $100 on something you want of course.)

The bundle deal is good too, makes the Microserver 8GB after you install the extra 4GB

Sorry, your comment is bit mis-leading

The scenario should be spend $238 on the server + $62 on something else on ebay and receive $100 voucher to spend…I will end up paying $138 for the server (in your words, if I value the eBay voucher at $100) + $62 on some other product

Technically you are bagging that $62

  • +13

    $238 on your website

    http://www.warehouse1.com.au/epages/shop.sf/en_AU/?ObjectPat…

    $300 on ebay

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-819185-371-ProLiant-MicroServe…

(yes I get $100 voucher from ebay but it's ebay promotion)

    • +3

Flashing news - "Seller tries to make MORE profit".

    • It works out still cheaper if your next purchase with Ebay is below: $179.3, use the $100 voucher then you pay $79.3.
overall, you have to spend a bit more, but you still get the microserver cheaper than $238.

If they drop the price below $300, then you only get the $50 voucher.

      • +4

Or if it was below $300 you could just buy something else to make up the 300 and still get the voucher.

        • +4

Agreed, their Ebay store price is quite high.

          @Warehouse1:

In that case if you can make the RAM bundle $300 ill buy two :)

        • +6

@Warehouse1: …sounds like "we could have added something as a bundle to build it to $300 but we decided to pocket $40"…neg

          Added on edit

Hmmm vendor has removed comment and to me it is obvious why!!

To bring the comment back into the light - Basically stated they raised price from $260 to $300 so buyers could receive a $100 ebay voucher instead of a $50 one, ebay costs were blamed for the differential between site shop prices and ebay listed prices.

The latter item I can understand though it does tend to remove "special" from the ebay special offer, the removal of the first part when criticised says, to me, "never buy from this vendor." Other members opinions may be different of course.

        • +7

          @Warehouse1:

bundling the $260 option with a decent RAM upgrade option (8GB module) would be a much better use of the promotion. I'd have bought a second 8GB module in November using the $100 voucher. You'd get 3 SKUs sold through this.

Now because the G8 barebone is too exxy, I'd perhaps buy it elsewhere and order the RAM separately (likely from an O/S seller) for about the same coin I'd have bought from you using the voucher.

And everyone is complaining that Australian retail is not doing well, here is why right here.

        • +1

          @havebeerbelywillsumo:

our eBay price on the microserver was 329, we dropped it for this deal. :)

Like all sellers, we pay higher fees to eBay than when we sell on our own website, so if we have a deal on our website, we cant necessarily do it cheaper on eBay.

          Thanks for understanding.

        • +5

          @Warehouse1:

No mate, I am referring to your own words (now deleted) where you say that the $238 deal from your site would be equivalent to around $260 on eBay.

No need to complain about the eBay fees, since you've already explained that point, I've took the equivalent price with fees added ($260) and compared it with the current offer ($300). Sorry but you lost my business on the G8 barebone and 2 x 8GB RAM sticks with these games.

        • +5

@Warehouse1: Thanks for the prompt reply. I have to say for the sake of feedback that deleting a comment "under fire" is personally still considered completely unacceptable.

          @ZloyKrys:

I understand some other frequent OZB favourite stores sometimes lift prices when there is an eBay deal on, we dont do that..

Note one of our other previous deals - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/266720

Whilst others put their pricing UP - we put ours down.

          @Warehouse1:
I'll give the seller the benefit of the doubt and say they had good intentions with the sale. Their price for the g8 on the website is the best around. What I would have liked to see with this ebay promo is a deal where the seller covers their ebay fees and gives customers like us a great deal. You've already stated that 260 covers your eBay fees, even if you made it 270 you would have come out of this looking so much better. At the end of the day ebay is covering the voucher. Anyway, keep up the good deals. I'll pass this time though as I don't think your strategy was a good one.

I have added a ATI 6450 card and also a USB 3.0 card to my NL-54. I run windows 7, and it's on 24/7. Great as an always on computer as well as working as a server through SMB shared windows folders to my various media players around the house. It has a 128 GB SSD with windows on it and a 2TB WD Red.

      • Thanks mate.

Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials. Yes, it's expensive - being a canny ozbargainer I had a TechNet subscription until they cancelled that program a couple of years ago, got my licence through that. For a cheaper MS alternative, there are lots of folks still running Windows Home Server 2011. Or you could just run Windows 10, although you miss out on some of the cool backup functionality.

      • ah okay - cheers!

      • +1

Download either server 2016 or 2012 r2 trial, you can reactive 3 times, each time is 180 days. Not bad having to reinstall every 2 years

Hey op, any chance of deals on internal drives (preferably non-SMR)?

  • Need guidance from pros.. I have a projector(Epson tw5200) that we use only for 1080p or 4K movies (no games). So far I was connecting through HDMI to laptop and laptop connected to my 4tb external drive. My sony's two speaker(built in amp) connect to laptop for sound. I know it's crappiest arrangement but was surviving on it from last one year due to lack of knowledge.

Is it possible to use this HTPC as storage and and connect to projector via HDMI and connect my Sony speaker to the audio out of this server.

Appreciate any guidance.. Thanks in advance

    • Well, it's essentially a computer so yes you could install whatever operating system you wanted but you would also have to install a half-slot GPU that has HDMI as it doesn't have a 3.5mm audio output.

      • No audio and no hdmi makes it a difficult choice.. Thanks

    • Is it possible to use this HTPC as storage

Not a HTPC but you could use it for storage.

and and connect to projector via HDMI

      No HDMI.

You could use a streaming device - like an Android TV or an Apple TV - running Plex Client and then run Plex Server on the HP. That's what many people do.

      • Not a HTPC but you could use it for storage.

They could certainly use it as a HTPC if they wanted, although it is unorthodox.

        • +1

Almost any PC "could" be a HTPC, but I wouldn't recommend HP gen8. The Intel NUC is a better choice.

        • @nhand42:

I wouldn't either if that's what it's intended main purpose was, but why not use it as one on top of it being a general file server.

        • @nhand42: thanks.. So need two devices one for storage and one HTPC…

        • +1

Streaming device just means anything that can receive the content from the server. Most Smart TV already do this with no additional hardware. My Sony can stream from Plex Server, DLNA Server, and NAS (via Kodi). The HP gen8 is perfect for storage/server in a streaming setup.

If you want a HTPC you'd best get a fanless PC with builtin HDMI, not the HP gen8. However I don't personally recommend HTPC. I think streaming works best. And streaming has a better "wife acceptance factor".

        • @nhand42: +1 for waf. Selling our ATV3 sent me back years.

        • @nhand42: thanks. For projector Iassume some device will be required to accept the steaming and project? Following is what projector spec says:

          CONNECTIVITY
Input: Video 1 x RCA (Yellow)
          Input: Computer 1 x D-sub 15-pin (RGB)
          Input: Digital 2 x HDMI (1 x MHL)
Input: USB 1 x USB A (Photo Viewer)
Input: Audio 1 x RCA (Red and White)
          Input: Control 1 x RS232c
          Wireless Connectivity Optional
          Output: Audio 1 x 3.5 mm Jack
          ADVANCED FEATURES
MHL - Mobile High Definition Link Yes

        • @niagraBzO:

HDMI input is good. I would personally start with a Chromecast ($48) and use your PC or tablet to try out streaming. If you like it, you can invest in Plex server with lots of storage. If you don't like it, you're only out $48, or you can sell the Chromecast on gumtree and get some money back.

        • @nhand42: thanks. So if I buy micro server to store all my movies and hook up projector with chromecast than I am done? I assume chromecast will fetch movies out of micro server ?

        • @niagraBzO:

You need a tablet or PC to start the streaming. Anything that runs Android or Chrome. Also Plex client on Apple tablets seems to work. Actually any "Chromecast enabled" app will work.

          But yes, then you're done.

        • [@nhand42](/comment/4101928/thanks heaps mate

      • Thanks

      • Thanks

  • I bought my Gen8 on the Sunday night. I wonder if it is possible to pay via eBay and get original order refunded? The original order status is ready for dispatch. Ignore this request if it is too complicated. I'll pm you my order no if required.

Also can you please put a eBay deal of 4g memery + we red 2T, and make it as close as $150 for us?

First time with warehouse1, the EFT payment was cleared much fast than expected.

    Thanks for all good deals.

    Hi OP,

I for one think that it could be a smart business decision to focus on informed buyers looking for an excuse to "pull the trigger" on a purchase rather than exploiting naive buyers who often pay more than they need to just because "there's a sale on". Good luck to you and I hope that it creates a win/win situation (as it really should be) and that the idea catches on.

Now that I've finished grovelling, any chance you could list the QNAP TS-251+ from your website on eBay (plus any applicable fees of course)? It would be enough to convince me to "pull the trigger". Thanks.

        • @Warehouse1: Yes, just what I was after rep, and a very reasonable price too. Thank you so much! I've just sent you a PM, would you mind taking a look and seeing if you can help me out?

Thanks again for the great customer service.
          Cheers.

      • i am not good with micro server, but interested to purchase one from you guys. do you guys also provide service to install whatever that need to have the gen 8 microserver run?

i am a photographer and looking for a solution to
        1) store my files and backup… and sharing among family member in the house.
        2) watching / listening to media files or photos via TV

if you do, how much will the service cost? or should i better go with QNAP, which i assume have pre-install software for me to run straight away ?

pls kindly advise. Thank you. i am in melbourne..

      • Forgive me for being a noob - is it possible to hook up a printer to this?

        • +1

It's a computer, so as long as you install an operating system that your printer is compatible with, it will work.

But you're better off just getting a normal PC if that's all you're wanting to achieve with it.

        • @tranqme: okay cheers mate. yeah it's one of a few things I wanted from my NAS.

    • Hey mate - as a naive buyer who often pays too much just cos there's a sale, do you mind briefly explaining why a QNAP is a better purchase than the HP?

      • Hi DaiShan,

Sorry, I only just saw your post. I used the term "naïve" only because while it is logical that a sale would be a good time to save some money on an item, the reality is that that is not always the case with these eBay promotions. The very fact that you're a member on here means that you are probably not the type of buyer I was referring to anyway.

As far as these two items go, I'm sorry to say that I'm also pretty naïve when it comes to the functionality of the HP. What I do know is that the QNAP device suits my needs and current situation well and is an item that I had looked at on the Warehouse1 website anyway. My limited understanding is that a microserver and a NAS will serve many similar functions, and while the HP will allow for much greater customisation, I'm really looking for something with a reliable suite of software that will work right out of the box, and can be a bit of a "set-and-forget" situation.

Anyway, I hope you find what you're after. Good luck!

        • Sure, that makes perfect sense. I'm probably in a similar boat - looking for something that's functional, powerful and relatively easy to use. Thanks for the response mate! Let's hope rep can deliver.

  • Can anyone comment on the Microserver for Plex use?

How does it handle 1080p hi10p and x265 (hevc) transcoding, do you know?

If needed, you can find some hi10p samples at https://www.koi-sama.net/files/hi10/
and some HEVC samples at https://x265.com/hevc-video-files/

    Thanks

    • I use the base model with the G1610T processor and 16GB RAM. It streams regular 1080 HD content fine, I've used it for 2 streams at once, more than that might be pushing it. Not sure about specific video formats though. The limiting factor is the CPU and RAM, which you can upgrade although at some expense. I'm sure if you put a Xeon in there it would stream anything.

      • Been deciding on whether to get this with the i3 or xeon CPU or the Synology DS216+II. my question is transcoding, how about video above 1080p? I store a lot of raw photos and h264 videos. cost price and convenience the synology ds216+II works out more favorable. the DS216+II provides on the fly transcoding for upto 4k video (downgrades to 1080p which is fine for me) obviously i won't be able to upgrade the components of the synology.

        • Can't help you, I'm just streaming 1080p content, no experience with 4k or anything similar. I dare say with an upgraded processor the G8 would smash it but you'll have to do some more research. Try the forums at homeservershow.com. They have a lot of info including benchmarks of the different CPUs that can go in a G8.

The other advantage of the Gen8 vs Synology is that it is much more customisable. The really popular apps like Plex are available on any platform, but there's a lot of useful stuff that needs Windows or Linux. For example, I run Plex and recently got the DVR functionality going to record broadcast TV. You can run Plex on a Synology too, but if you want to strip out the ads from recorded TV content, you need a program called MCEBuddy, which only runs on Windows. So it's not a major feature, but if you're going to the trouble of setting up a server, it's nice to have the flexibility to get it exactly the way you want it.
