  • That TV tuner is exactly the same deal from HN last month at $14.

Its also android only? If it worked on windows it'll be a lot more useful to more people.

    • I got this just a few weeks ago was $16 but does not work for me dont waste your money.

      • +1

It works ok if you plug it to your roof antenna. The provided antenna is too weak.

        • +1

Yeah, but then that defeat the purpose of being "portable".

        • +2

Yes but the point in buying was to watch tv on the go see no point at home with roof antenna.
I thought i give it a try and maybe it would work.
I noticed a guy on flea bay selling these with a different antenna and i looked this up and same antenna can be had for $2.
I asked if it was better he said yes but he could be saying that to make a sell.
Im tempted to get one see if it helps get signal.

        • @edfoo: might be handy for those android tv boxes?

        • @edfoo:

Maybe plug in a portable indoors antenna?. :P

Yep, lots of negative feedback from previous buyers - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/267255 - that's why I didn't bother buying it last time (and this time too).

I have a pretty bad TV signal at my house and this thing works OK with the portable aerial. It picks up 39 stations including all the big FTA channels AFAIK.

When I say works you have to realise this: you cannot move your device and have a continuous TV signal - period. Your device literally has to be on something that does not move - you cannot hold it still enough. With that caveat it works pretty well for me.

What is a bit of a PITA is how often you have to scan for channels (which takes a long time) - it fails to maintain channel lists between unplugging it. I also recommend getting an hosted USB OTG cable that allows charging so you can use it with a power bank as it uses the devices battery fairly rapidly.

I bought it for $14 for power blackouts since I live in exotic stone age SA, a place so backwards it cannot keep the power on.

For digital TV, if your antenna moves in relation to the transmitter (even the slightest movement), the frequency gets sent out of whack and you get no signal (it's called the Doppler Shift). Most other broadcast technologies these days incorporate some form of protection against doppler shift like you see in 4G technologies and digital radio, but not digital TV.

      • +1

Doppler shift will only affect analogue broadcasts. Digital Broadcasts have caching and frame adjustment algorithms when receiving TV stream data (part of the codecs used in DTV-B).

  • I bought one in the last sale, As others have said, poor reception but for $14 is is very very cheap. It's OK if you have to find a use case for a crappy old Android tablet and have a decent antenna or great reception at your location.
Identical to the "http://www.geniatech.com/pa/pt230.asp" and the apps are interchangeable. Poor reception on stock antenna and also gets rather hot, the small Belling Lee antenna Adapter and provided small wire antenna was useful for SDR modules however, so easier to swallow the $14. Another bonus is the recordings are standard .TS files (Geniatech PadHD app) so can be exported.

  • Apart from bad signal with the included Antenna please be aware I have not been able to get this to work on any of my Android 7 Nougat tablets/phones. It's OK with 6 (Marshmallow).
