HTC RE 1080p FULL HD Action Camera $59 + Shipping at COTD

340

Was in market for a budget action camera and seems like HTC RE for $59 is a good deal. Cheapest I can find in eBay for around $100+. According to review if we ignore the design overall it is a good 1080p camera which is waterproof till 1m for 30mns without need of any extra housing.

Oh man, when I see it is a new day I know I have been refreshing for too long

That makes two of us! Here have a + :)

  • ;)

  • +1

Does it come with a radar that pings too? Looks more like a submarine periscope than an action camera.

  • +2

only waterproof for one metre, does extra housing actually exist for it ?

  • Yes but finding any of the accessories is hard these days.

If someone can find the housing and a dock please post links.

  • Is there a head mount for this thing? :D

  • +5

I was interested in this, but it seems you may have to be very gentle with the camera, if you are going to use it for the intended purpose, and even be careful taking it out of the box !
It appears to be extremely fragile, and develops small cracks, near the base, that lead to failure.

Warning / Heads-Up : Roughly one quarter of people have given it the lowest possible star rating on amazon.
The ones that mention cracks near the base, straight out of the box, are especially concerning…

    • +2

Yep mine suddenly had a slight crack at the base and died when I took it under water. Don't know when it happened but found the crack under close inspection

      • Sorry to hear that, but I guess it provides confirmation of the issue…

I hope you can get it remedied under warranty.

Same issue. Stuck with a dead one. I want to get it fixed. Paid usd99 for it last year. Takes really good pictures underwater.

  • +1

Lol, the listing says 16MB instead of 16MP

  • Why do manufacturers find it so hard to do what the go pro does. It can't be that hard. I don't understand why someone would design a camera to look like this.

    • +1

      …Patents my friend, patents!!!

  • They have black ones for sale as well. Black ones maybe better choice as most creacked bottom happened to the white ones.

    • +8

I'm white and my bottom has a crack.

      • +2

You need to go to the masters closing down sale and get some no more gaps to fix ur problem. Make sure u go on Monday or Tuesday to get extra 10%

    Review: http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2014/10/i-tried-re-htcs-gopro-comp…

This… is not an action camera. This is some weird little tube that tries to be quirky and ergonomic, but really, really just sucks to use. Image quality is lousy and it’s… just really not an action camera. It’s more of a life-logging camera. Belongs in a different category. Even for under $249, don’t do it.

  • I've got one of these about 18 months ago, and for what I paid (from memory around $80) I would recommend it, so for this price I would definitely suggest it for someone looking for something similar. I took it surfing with me a few weeks ago and it's still going great.

Yeah there are cons to it that others have mentioned above, but it's a fairly robust and portable camera that is waterproof without addition accessories. I got mine to go travelling with to basically use instead of the camera on my smartphone, which doesn't have a great camera. And this was far cheaper than replacing a phone I was otherwise happy with.

It's not a GoPro of course, but I'm sure someone can remind me of the price of those.

I love my RE but let me warn everyone who was thinking about buying it DO NOT buy the white version I've gone through 2 of them due to the cracks at the bottom. Get the navy!! Useless HTC won't repair it either because they think its physical damage.

Also don't think of this as an action camera to compete against the go pro, this is a selfie/vlogging camera made for holidays etc, it takes awesome photos outdoors when you want to capture a lot of scenery with a selfie or just a really wide landscape shot. The form factor makes it really easy to just quickly shoot on the go as it is always on and you use a click of the button to shoot.

Cons however are the weak plastic (white version), always on can be annoying at times when you accidentally hit record in your pocket, and low light is very bad. If you're looking for an easy to shoot, no thought selfie camera this is the guy you want.

    • Do you actually have the navy one now, and has it proven to be more durable that your white ones?
The Amazon complaints about cracking, leaking, and battery failure (or complete bricking) that I linked to are actually associated with all three colour variations. That is, Amazon don't don't have separate complaints for each colour.

      • Yes I have the navy one and it's still going strong, my friend also bought the navy and has used it for over a year now. I guess it's just random with which ones are defective.

Damn, I paid $90 for this about a month ago. I actually really like it. I took it overseas, and it's really nice not having your eyes glued to your phone screen the entire time you're out exploring, and still be able to record. Not having a viewfinder isn't much of an issue; you learn pretty instinctively where to point the camera to get something in frame. Plus, it's good for sneaking videos at concerts since it doesn't look like a traditional camera.

I'd also recommend getting the dinosaur charging dock:

It's super cute, but also for practical reasons. The Re charges from the bottom, so you have to lay it down on its side to charge (probably my main gripe about the camera). I get paranoid about scratches, or it rolling off my desk and breaking or whatever. With the dock, you can stand it upright and do live streams and time lapses.

This cam probably do worse than most of high-end phone nowadays.

  • Free shipping with club catch and 10% off with masterpass.

  • I really can't buy devices that are prone to break that only have 12 months warranty these days. With all the crap I buy on here some things are still I the box at the 12 month mark

  • Seems to be sold out

    • Damn sold out, missed….

  • Has anyone's order shipped?

  • So mine was delivered today, and it had been open already, and in addition to that, there's a small scratch on it. Is it normal for COTD to send used items?

    • I received mine yesterday too. Mine looks like a new one.

It can turn on but somehow the firmware update stuck at 75% and I can't view or take photos. I will have to return it.

    • +1

Yep 3 friends also received theirs, 2 of them were used/had cracks already. What a joke!

      • Haven't receive mine yet but this is very worrying.

      • same here, they sell used items. photos on the provided memory card and loose seal. also cracked on the bottom.
