Anyone know if the Hulu, showtime etc works in Aus? I'm assuming needs a proxy or similar?

    • +2

CBS didnt need a VPN a few years back, not sure about nowadays
Hulu probably needs a VPN or Getflix.
      Not sure about showtime

      • Thanks mate

      • I have getflix setup on my wireless router, is it enough to activate the roku or need to do something else? Plus it said valid payment method required to get the free trials, what kind of valid method?

        • You will need to enter you credit card details in

    • I use a Getflix account with my Hulu. Hulu haven't been as aggressive as Netflix with their geo-blocking so I use it as my backup.

  • Thought you didn't like Hulu?

    Hulu is inferior to Netflix

Last time I trialed Hulu, the advertisements ran every 10 minutes . Mostly an annoying Geiko insurance or something

Side note, many reported payment issues with that post (these trials normally require US credit cards)

I also hear it's probably best to wait till Black Friday for the best deals.

      • feel free to wait.

This is a countdown to black friday deal

        • -1

Which means the Amazon Black Friday sale will probably kick start around on the following week or soon after. Last year the Black Friday deals started on November 20th USA time.

        • @hollykryten:
The problem with the Black Friday deals is that they're locked off to US Residential Addresses/Accounts only. Hell, even Hawaii and Alaska (and Puerto Rico) draw the short straw.

You can always try "Mail Forwarding Services" but last I've heard Amazon was issuing refunds and cancelling orders on a few known services "cause reasons". And there's always the possibility that your item gets switched around, or incorrectly sent to somewhere else.

          …so OzBargain is where it's at !

The "good" news is that Amazon.com.au is coming in 2017.
And I don't mean books, but actual things people hold and look at… to buy online.
However, I have low hopes for it ever since "Newegg Australia" and "Netflix Australia" became a thing:
(ie/ a high-priced, bastardised, cut-down version of the real thing).

Looks like its not just Apple that's going the way of the stinker lately.

Does it hardware decode h.265 2160p content?

check roku forum , alot of good info there

    • +4

      Nope

  • +1

Do you by any chance need to use a VPN to activate it?

    • +1

Oh man if it does I can say to people don't bother.

I work in IT deal with VPN's daily have some of the most complicated setups you have seen. Activating the Roku through a VPN was one of the most annoying things I have done, work paying extra to get a better device.

      • +2

Agreed. Bought a US Roku for my mum, and what a jerkaround getting it configured. It's working great for her on an AU Netflix account now, but that's the only useful thing she can use on it.

If you love jumping through hoops, by all means grab the bargain. But if you want a no fuss setup, just get Telstra's localised Roku.

        • +1

          What's the point?

Heaps of mainstream/flagship TVs come with a "smart" OS, processor, and services to connect.
There's little to miss besides 4K… but a standard 1080p BluRay looks better anyway… and 4K streaming can be done with new TV sets, or (new) PS4/Xbox, or a PC.

        • @Kangal: i hear ya man

        • @Kangal: Very true for up to date TVs, but all the flatscreens in my family are older. Still loving my 6yo Sammy, and don't plan to upgrade until it carks. The Roku is probably the best, cheapest bandaid fix for smart features.

        • @gruso:
          The Roku is… for 'mericans.
It just feels like a lot of trouble for something so small/cheap… and you need a couple subscriptions of top for the TV service and a VPN, so its like an Xbox Live Gold (urgh).

So either get the Telstra Roku. Or a Chromecast. Or a Nexus Player. Maybe even an Apple iTV.
There's the weird nVidia Shield TV, for the die-hard fans.

      • Sounds like you over complicated it. From memory you just need to use a US address and payment method (nothing gets charged to card). You do need VPN for most channels but I only use Plex and Netflix which run fine without it, I like the smooth functionality and the headphone feature on the remote is a must have for anyone who has a TV in the bedroom.

        • No you need a VPN in order to activate it as it has geo locating. This is nothing to do with the streaming channels.

So no it's not complicated at all providing you have a VPN setup, as well as US payment method such as a US Ccard or something like entropay and a valid US address.

It took me a good 2 hours to get all that working.

The network side of things were easy as for me but I have to think about how the average user deals with things. If I find something annoying and wanted to throw it through the wall what would the average person think?

        • @kasp: ok, it has been so long since I did it I cannot remember. I do know that I only had to connect the pc to the VPN and not the device, there are plenty of VPN providers that offer software that does it automatically. No US card here, I just used PayPal.

        • @wattstar:

Maybe different devices have different requirements. This was the roku 3 and about a year back.

I really remember being shitted off the wall after everything was all said and done.

        • @kasp: could be different versions, I have a 2014 roku 2 and a 2015 roku 3

      • Can't we use opera vpn to activate it?

I find opera vpn is good to chromecast netflix so that it gets US content without paid VPN

        • No, you can't use the device until it is activated.

my issue was even though I was using a VPN it still was a huge Pain in the ass to get configured.

        • @kasp: I thought that was what I said, activate it using Opera VPN…

        • @televisi:

Opera VPN is in the browser. How do you plan on using it on the device.

There are several versions of Roku with different requirements this one might just require a US account which can be activated anywhere. if not the device has to be on the VPN to activate in which case no your opera VPN will not work.

However seriously with all the (profanity) around you should just buy a local device.

        • @kasp: Ah…okay… I used Android "Opera VPN" application, and it created a VPN tunneling for my Netflix android app (to watch US Netflix); perhaps this can be done when activating Roku?

          Haha…profanity :p

        • @televisi:

Yeah depends on the device, some require annoying activation others don't.

I just think it's worth buying something else.

    • my original streaming stick did, easy enuff , just set up a free trial vpn to activate, never tried hulu etc , but netflix was good till they geoblocked

  • +1

Can I also stream video from my networked pc, or do I need another sort of Roku ?

    • +2

Seems you can via Plex. I'll have to check it out a bit more …

    • yes , there is a roku app - roku media player , or plex (has bad file system now)etc, but may not play everything, I try if, no good , run thru handbrake to roku friendly settings

    • Plex is the right answer here. I have it running on my HTPC and then stream to other TVs via roku+plex. Works great. I have the media stored on my NAS, with the PC handling the processing and the NAS storage.

Note: expecting your NAS to be the plex server itself is a recipe for disappointment if you want 1080p streaming. But if you've got a PC that's always on that can do it (and you don't need something top of the line for this use) then it's a great solution. Heck, if I had NBN, it'd be a great solution for the road too.

      • Thanks for the answers @travs, @hrcdan. Looks fine for what I want (streaming from pc plus mlb.com streaming) so I think I'll get it as replacement for my aging wdtv player.

  • its a great device, I bought earlier this year for ~85 so its easy to recommend at this price.

  • good find

    This vs Chromecast 2?

    • I had the same question. Specs look spectacular, however functionality wise, it seems Chromecast may have the edge. Especially with youtube.

      • Plus new CC out shortly isnt it?

        • +1

Another one? I am still using the original Chromecast.

        • Sure I read it somewhere that November the new updated model is out.
Sounds like you are getting good value out of the original then!

        • +2

@Jase1: The updated model supports 4k so if you don't have a 4k TV yet, Chromecast 1 or 2 should still be fine.

        • @alwaysupforabargain:
Thank you. I will have to check that part of the tv (got UHD blah blah etc just not sure about 4k) I was keeping my options open as to which one to buy and use..

        • @Jase1: If the TV says UHD, it means it is 4k. I would recommend getting the new Chromecast then but a couple of things to consider - do you have UHD content to watch (i.e. do you have Netflix 4k subscription, etc) and the cost of the new chromecast will likely be around double the price of Chromecast 2. I would still say go for the new one just so that you're future proofed but if you don't need it right away, you could wait and see if the price drops.

        • +1

          @alwaysupforabargain:
Ok sweet:) I do not currently have netflix.. Yeah the future proofed one sounds best for me not being so tech in this specific area I will do that - thank you :) No hurry, I am happy to watch for good price then act ;)

        • +1

@Jase1: No worries! And if you enjoy watching movies/TV shows, I'd recommend Netflix to go along with the new CC (when you get it) ;)

        • +1

          @alwaysupforabargain:
Cool will do - Nothing like great movies!!!

  • +1

Chromecast is more for casting, roku can cast but more for media through a home network, roku doesn't need phone or app but are available if u want, i use phone alot during movies so prefer roku remote then phone and will never lag due to phone

    • +1

Have you had any problems with the remote ?

Only ask as some recent amazon reviews complain of freezing remote, but not sure if this is widespread or just a case of dud remotes. A firmware upgrade was supposed to have fixed earlier remote issues, but some still complain of freezing.

    • You're confusing casting with screen mirroring - there's no lag when casting as the phone / tablet is not used.

  • No probs with mine

  • Good for streaming netflix to a non smart tv …or overkill?

    • +1

Haven't tried the Roku but I would say Chromecast is a better (and cheaper) option if you plan to use it for Netflix only.

  • +1

Roku requires either a VPN or DNS changes to be done at router level. Better off buying a Amazon Fire TV Stick.

The AFTV Stick is quad core, works while using a hotspot and allows DNS configuration internally. It can install apps from US, UK and Germany. Netflix (US), Amazon, Hulu and many others concurrently. Fire stick also has Alexa pre installed which allows for voice command via the remote.

  • How do you get a safe and certified AU power adapter though

  • This item does not ship to Perth, Australia. Please check other sellers who may ship internationally.

  • Does it ship to qld
