  • Why do none of these Chinese Android phones ever feature Band 28 support?

    • +4

They don't need band 28 in China which is their primary market.

    • +6

It's like complaining why Ozbargain isn't also published in Chinese. OzBargain's primary market is Australia. The Xiaomi phones have a primary market in developing countries like China, or India, and their antennas are tuned to the appropriate frequency for this market. Xiaomi isn't building phones "with the lot", they are in essence "barely-there" phones that do just good enough, which allows the price to be kept to a minimum (eg no NFC typically, but this model does have it before anyone corrects me !!))

      • +2

Haha "barely-there" maybe a bit rough!

      • I said barely there. I'm sure that they would suffice for 99% of the android phone users that have other brands' flagship phones in most circumstances, at a fraction of the cost.
Right now I'm tossing up between an Oppo R9plus and a Redmi Note 3 Pro/Prime/Megatron whichever one is the one I mean

        • +1

          get the Megatron of course!!

    • Redmi Note 3 Special Edition for the Taiwan market has B28 support. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/274096
Asus Zenfones distributed out of Taiwan have B28 support.

No band 28 is basically saying this phone may not get 4g in some rural areas. Otherwise it will work just fine and divert to 3g. Had no issues with my mi max so far. I disagree that these phones are "barely there". Sure there's a mid range camera but the battery life is market leading and Miui is very easy to use and has alot of great features. It's only a matter of time time until xiaomi will launch in Australia in my opinion.

    • Yeah. They have great phones. Oppo is now the no. 1 seller in China, but I've used their phones, and I find Xiaomi's Redmi line better in terms of hardware, software and price.

    • Also had no deal breaking issues with Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 purchased from an ozbargain deal about a year ago (also with no band 28). I consider my phone to be a bit more than a "barely there" phone and it's for the same reason I feel like I've gotten such a good deal. So much phone for $220.

A couple of concerns that have come up lately though:

      • lock/power button seems to have a trend of not working properly after 6-9 months (only works 50% of the time it's pressed). Noticed this on 3/4 Redmi Note 2s that me and my friends have been using. Mine encountered the issue but now seems fine again
      • battery life really bad now. There's some sort of wakelock affecting my phone and I think it's related to the MediaTek chipset
      • (this issue has been present from the start) apps not autostarting properly or closing themselves. This can affect music playback and can also mean push notifications for stuff like WhatsApp don't come through properly. The WhatsApp issue seems to have been addressed by granting WhatsApp autostart permissions in a security, but music does still intermittently stop by itself which is annoying
      • Have run into those issues as well except for the power button one. I tend to stay away from MediaTek chipset phones now because of that.

  • Problem with Xiaomi is they have a history of backdoor on their phones to China gov

    • not to the government, to their own servers to allow app updates!

    • @Bargaingeek
      Info Source?

Looks like the Mi5S is also lacking a micro-SD slot.

    • Problem with Google is that, they had a history of backdoors on all their devices to all governments lol :)
It is an open source os, put personal encryption on the phone if we really want security from big brother. Else they are all the same.

If you go by gsmarena then this is one of the few xiaomi phones with a great camera….
    http://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=4&idPhone1=7260&i…
…this is the one Id want.

  • Wonder if paying $80 more for the Mi5S is worth it vs the Mi5 in this deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/274096)

Also, I can't work out if either the Mi5s or Mi5 will work with Android Pay. Yes, it has NFC, but owners are reporting Android Pay doesn't work, which defeats the purpose of NFC for me (http://en.miui.com/thread-271547-1-1.html). Happy to be proven otherwise.

    • Xiaomi have Mi Pay, that's what their intentions on including NFC were.

They can't be bothered support Google Pay because Google has zero presence in China.

      • Yeah makes sense. Bugger.

  • Is this likely to get Cyanogen?
