Sony STR-DN1060 7.2 Channel High Resolution Audio Home Cinema AV Receiver - £349/$564 Shipped from Amazon.co.uk - AU RRP $1299

This is the benchmark that other receivers are judged against. Sony release new models each year and the 1070 is now available however it has no additional features over the 1060, seeming to be a new label only. 1070 is $1399 at JB Hi-fi. Neither model have Dolby Atmos.

Item is £349 INC. Solely by coincidence the shipping is the same as the VAT so you end up with the same price shipped.

  • I bought this recently @JB for about $790. Good machine although my Harmony remote doesn't seem to work with it half the time.

    • My Harmony seems to work ok. Happy to share config experience if you need it.

      • It's just weird. Sometimes the volume control, for example, works. Other times it doesn't.

although my main problem (which admittedly I haven't put much thought into) is when I turn on my system with the Xbox 1 (plugged into GAME) the receiver automatically changes to 'TV' and I have to manually switch it back to GAME so I can hear the sound.

Turn off all instances of HDMI-CEC or similar HDMI "Link" options, as these conflict with the remote and get it all confused.

        • @m13:

This. HDMI-CEC isn't useful when you're trying to control everything with the Harmony.

I've also had to take my Xbox out of its Instant On mode. I'm pretty sure that mode uses HDMI-CEC whether you've told it to or not.

This is the benchmark that other receivers are judged against.

    Whose opinion is that?

    • If anything, it would be Sony ES receivers. But after having a terrible experience with Sony design and warranty on the last ES receiver I bought, never again.

From what I've read, Sony is the brand to beat these days in that segment of the AV reciever market, with very good sound quality.

Here's one of the most reputable reviewers:

      http://www.whathifi.com/sony/str-dn1060/review

Looks like this model loses a star for not having Atmos or perfectly future-proof 4K support (only one HDCP 2.2 input) but the sound quality is still very very strong for this price.

      • Obviously hasn't tried any other brand, or is a paid stooge. Sony isn't bad, but to suggest it's the best brand in any bracket is absolutely laughable.

Marantz, Yamaha, Denon would be but a few in that bracket that would warrant a mention.

Yeah totally, a years long member sleeper agent has just been activated by Sony marketing agents and now he/she has dealt the decisive move: a sentence explaining that Sony is the best!

          Totes.

I don't mean to embarrass you but I don't think you understand what benchmark means. No one said it's the "best brand in any bracket".

The benchmark small car would be a Golf or some might even say a Corolla, that doesn't mean they're better than an Audi or Mercedes.

        • @LoopyLou:

May wanna read properly. He said Sony is the brand to beat. Do you seriously believe that?

    • +1

Given they ditched their AM aerial connector on the previous model and this one, their flagship is lacking a standard feature and no benchmark. Puts them lacking against their competition for what is basic functionality of a receiver - and makes you question what other things they've cut on the inside just to save a few bucks.

  • Does it come with a australian plug

    • +2

I would suggest it comes with a plug consistent with our colonial overlords.

They use typical pc power plugs, I'd be amazed if this was any different. Would presumably be 110-240v too world wide I'd bet on.

      • +1

The DN1040 I bought from Amazon Germany has a hard wired cord and not a PC style IEC plug. I was surprised and a little disappointed but the adapter works fine, albeit ugly.

  • I would guestimate that this is a low-to-mid end receiver (based on number of hdmi inputs and features in comments), for which $564 is a great price.

I would struggle to pay much more for it.

Looks like a decent buy - any particular opinions on pros/cons?

The Bottom Line The Sony STR-DN1060 AV receiver offers great sound and is chock full of solid streaming audio features, but rivals are nipping at its heels. 8/10

    THE VERDICT
If you can do without Dolby Atmos in this seven-channel AVR, Sony’s well-thought-out wireless functionality and sweet, golden sound are an unbeatable combination.

SUMMARY: The bottom line is that the STR-DN1060 is a great receiver. It’s feature rich and is the perfect workhorse for any home theater. The 1060’s biggest drawback is its lack of support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. However, both formats are unproven at this point.

      They are clearly paid stooges!

  • I worked for the only authorised Sony repairer in Victoria for these units (Str range and others )

When purchased in Australia these come with a 3 year warranty.
When purchased outside of Australia Sony warranty does not apply. You would need to deal with amazon if you had faults or issues.

    Just something to consider

    • Good point, something to consider, especially given the amount of Sony devices I've had fail in less than 3 yrs!
