Upgrade to a new 2016 macbook pro. That 15" one is still using 4th generation haswell processors.

      • +5

Interesting $2169 vs 2016 at $3599. Can't be worth 1400 for extra processing power.

        • -2

Oh boo hoo. There's a market for these products whether you can afford it or not. They'll still sell like hotcakes knowing Apple's performance.

        • +3

          @niner:

I can afford it and I don't want to pay it.

  • Never used an apple laptop..can someone please advise that 128GB storage is sufficient if i buy Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display 13".
Also is it a good investment in the long run than Dell XPS…really need some good advise please..

    • +1

I would spend the extra $200 and get the 256gb. 128gb also has slower speeds and will not be as future proof as the 256gb. Unless you are only using it for basic tasks, get the 256gb and enjoy never having to worry about deleting stuff.

MacBooks have excellent warranty servicing through Apple stores and retain their value very well so I consider them a good purchase.

Dell XPS is a solid laptop too but depends whether you want Mac OS (operating system) or Windows? This should be a key determinant in your decision.

I recommend trying them both out in store and then deciding which operating system and laptop you prefer :)

      • Why is the 128GB slower?…never knew that and was about to bite the bullet on one for my girlfriend.

        • Slower speeds, its the way that Apple gets you to upgrade to the 256gb model.

With the entry-level MacBook Pro and its 128GB flash drive, we measured sequential read speeds of 1500MB/s and sequential write speeds at up to 681MB/s. There’s a large discrepancy between reading and writing here, usually explained as a reduction in the level of parallelism available to smaller capacity solid-state drives.
From the 256GB MacBook, we found that write speeds now closely approached read speeds. To wit, sequential write speed now reached up to a maximum of 1424 MB/s, with averages of 2–10MB files of 1353MB/s; and an average speed of 1231MB/s for 20–100MB data (all measurements with QuickBench).

        • +2

@ShamelessBargains: no one will notice 681mb/s to 1424mb/s in real world for 99.9% of tasks, both are incredibly fast, as below I had a 128GB retina maybe 60GB (a lot) of apps and all movies on a flush microsd card for extra storage, 128GB can be fine. Especially considering the crazy premium for extra storage

        • @coolhand: Found this example:

Here’s one use scenario: you would like to copy a 25GB video file from a fast external storage drive (and to keep up with the internal flash drive performance, we are now only talking about a Thunderbolt-connected disk array or fast SSD system such as the LaCie LBD 2).
Using the 128GB flash drive in the entry model, and assuming a 650MB/s average write speed, the process would take around 38 seconds.
With the new 256GB flash drive in the middle model, and writing at an average of 1250MB/s, you would have to wait just 20 seconds.

        • +4

          @ShamelessBargains:

He said most people wouldn't notice the difference and that true. Your example requires external drives that cost more than the laptop itself to. For the people who have those devices and needs the throughput they would already know which laptop they need to get.

        • +1

@serideth: Point taken, I just think buying a 128gb laptop is like buying a 16gb iPhone. Might be ok for now but after a few years and 1000's of files and stuff, you will reach capacity :/

        • In totally non technical terms,b igger SSDs have more stacks and thus more gates to access the storage, so can get at it more quickly. Sort of like how a raid system of HDDs is quicker than a single HDD.

        • @ShamelessBargains: so will 256gb. and 512gb. point is use what you have, plan ahead, keep rubbish on cheap external drive or desktop rather than $5/GB onboard flash

      • +1

I'd get the extra space, hate running out of space on the laptop

      • Tempting to get this and mackook air goes to eBay …..

      • Usability is a big part of laptop choices, and if you don't care what os, mb is the smart choice.

      • I agree $200 is worth but 256GB was gone before I pulled the trigger so ordered 128g one.If it's not good should I return and wait for any good deal in future??

    • Check your current laptop and see how much storage you are using and you may find your answer. Personally i will never get anything lower than 256gb, and with 256gb i will be storing most my large data on external harddrive.

    • +4

Get a microsd adapter flush for mbp and add a 128gb microsd for ~$50 if u wanna go the cheaper alternative. Good if you just need somewhere to store music/videos/pictures etc. and don't require ssd speeds.

    • Doable but tight.

I used to have an 11" Air that I used for travelling and it was always within 10-20GB of being full - had to actively manage space.

That said, the 13" MBPs models do have an SD card slot, so you could get a 64-256Gb SD card for additional storage. I used to do a similar thing with a 64GB Ultrafit drive, but it smashed the battery - no idea if an SD card would have the same issue.

      Personally, I'd spring for the 256 and wouldn't buy a 128 again.

EDIT: I'd forgotten it's possible to do an after-market swap of the SSD in this model. Might be worth checking out and see if the numbers work for you: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Retina+Disp…

Note that the RAM is NOT UPGRADEABLE.

    • My 256gb is already out of space and requires external drive now

    • While the 2015 MacBook Pro was a great machine for its time, for a very similar price I would highly recommend the XPS 13 instead, FHD+ i7 (Kaby Lake) + 256 GB SSD for around $1650 after a eBay discount on top of an existing Dell discount. This happens more frequently than once every 2 months - one just got over a week ago I think.

You will get a faster CPU with almost similar Integrated graphics and a slightly better battery life.

Furthermore you a USB C/ TB3 port making the XPS 13 more futureproof. And you have access to the SSD which you don't in the MacBook where it's soldered on to the logic board (how else can Apple charge you crazy amounts?).

But end of the day it's your laptop, your choice, if you prefer OS X over Linux / Windows go for the Mac. The 2015 MacBook Pro is still a great machine, and you can't go wrong with either.

  • I believe you just answered your own question.
Imagine all that storage and mod-ability that you will be giving up.

  • +3

I like the Macbook and used to own them before but at this price i would rather get Metabox or Alienware with quad core i7 and gtx 1060/1070(Talking about the new Macbook). But i guess you buy a Macbook because of their operating system :)

    • Yeah operating system, good warranty and above average resale. Compatibility with other Apple devices is good too like iMessage and being able to answer calls directly off the laptop.

      • +4

One more important factor, the trackpad.

      • Yeah the operating system is great i really liked it especially the icloud(Now available on windows). Tbh, Alienware warranty today is way better than Apple. At apple store reservation is always full and nearest appointment can take 5 days. Alienware will send a technician next day to your home to fix your issue, call today and they verify your issue remotely and next day your machine is fixed :).
Edit; regard the resale value. I bought my old Alienware 15 R1 from dell outlet for $1450 on February and i just sold it yesterday for $1250, but that one was refurbished and new one cost around $1700-$1900 depends on dell sale so i would say its fair. :)

    • +2

Have to remember build quality is essentially unmatched and if you buy one of the cheaper ones here you could sell it for 70% of this price in a couple of years. I actually bought a used 2014 128GB retina mbp a year ago for $1100 and just sold it for $1050, try doing that with any windows machine

      • wow thats crazy good resale, I wish cars were like that ;)

      • I have been using Alienware for 2 years and i have never seen any issue on them. Not sure about the build quality as both runs with intel cpu and both runs with OEM ram and storage, i dont believe that apple or dell build stuff by themselves but everyone have different quality check and control. Seems like apple is the new toyota in the resale market :)

        • absolutely, I don't neccesarily mean build quality in terms of will it structurally fail but they are just a well excecuted machine hinges, keyboard, screen quality, trackpad, battery, and overall feel of the laptop. Subjective, but I think in general they look nicer too.

These are of course intangibles, but in a world where any laptop will easily exceed the needs of most people for laptop tasks, I would actually say these are far more important than specs.
(profanity) paying $2700 for the new one with oled bar though haha

        • @coolhand:

(profanity) paying $2700 for the new one with oled bar though haha

Are two USB C ports enough for you?

    • Those laptops don't even compare to a MacBook Pro in terms of portability.

      • True and not true. I would agree on the Alienware 15 is bit heavy, but the Alienware 13 is very thin and very portable yet still powerful :)

  • What's the chance of HN price match or coming near these prices? Stack it with multiple Amex cards with the spend $300 and get $100 back offer.

    • +1

Depends on the guys working on the stores. Some will just price match it without giving you a headache. Other will claim that they only price match within the same shopping center and they must have stock(They will even call to check!). I would say try different stores if you really want one.

      • I went to HN Auburn, the guy turned down the match immediately. He said they can't match the price with no stock at the Good Guy local stores nearby….. When I go back to the Good Guy online, it was sold out….

My previous experience at HN, most of the guys are keen to match price, even though that's an online store, or an store in other state.

    • The T&C's for the HN Amex deal says it excludes Apple products

      • It's supposed to exclude gift cards such as vpay for the matter.

      • bought an Apple TV last week using this deal and it worked

  • It maybe a silly question. I have never bought a Macbook before and not following up with Apple's tech. Can anyone let me know the reason for the sale is the new model coming soon ?

    • New model has just come out. Has an led touch panel instead of function keys in new model. New model is a significant premium over this older model which is still a solid laptop.

      • Cheers, how much more if we are to buy 13in 256gb ?

        • Base 13" model (2.9GHz i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) with touch bar is A$2,699.00 without any sort of discount.

        • $200 extra for 256gb model or $600 extra for new model with 256gb over the 128gb.

    • New model is out essentially. The lowest price for the new model is $2200. I own a 2011 MacBook Pro, I dislike apples pricing and arrogance. But the products they make are annoyingly reliable and well constructed. This is a good deal, I am mulling it over whether to buy also.

    • New models were released last week (or the week before)

So the ones that are 10% off is the new model
The older ones have a bigger discount off RRP

  • I'm surprised there's already such a deep discount for the newly released macbook pro 13"…

    • +1

All the new ones are insanely overpriced. Apple is already losing ground in the phone market because of their stupid pricing, and they will sell less of these new pros because not much has changed and they are way more than comparable windows laptops. I say this as a mac and iphone user.

      • Couldn't agree more. I was disappointed too with the recent keynote. A developer who is using the 13" MBA and iphone user, I'm now seriously considering switching back to Windows after more than 10 yrs with the mac.

        • +1

I'd be in the same boat if there was a single windows machine with a trackpad as good as Apple's. The terrible scrolling and lack of useful gestures on windows laptops make me want to rip my hair out. Someone please give Apple a run for their money already.

        • @bohdud: I've been reading up and seriously considering the Surface Pro 4 with the touch and all-in-one system which will never come to the Mac (not iOS as they're not desktop OS). Now just waiting for a good discount deal to entice me and see what I've been missing all these years.

        • @gorillaz: yeah the surface looks nice! But it's only dual core and i need my machine for mobile video editing :((((

  • +1

Just ordered the 13" 256gb, don't want the dongle pain of the new versions, and still need a SD card slot.

  • does officeworks price beat stuff they don't have in stock?

    • I rang and tried and they have no stock and said they won't match

      • Thanks!

      • NAh i rang and asked if i can make a backorder they said yes

    • My local OW doesn't stock Apple computers (only iPads). Over the last couple of years we've bought 2 MacBook Pro's and a 21" iMac from them with price beat and they just order it in.
Will probably be different with the runout model though.

  • How is the 128Gb 13" Pro (https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/apple-macbook-pro-with-retina…) a retina model? Screen res is different to the 256Gb model (https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/apple-macbook-pro-with-retina…) according to specs on website…

    • +3

Error in their description. They also say the 11" Air has a 2880x1800 resolution which seems a bit high haha

  • Can you upgrade ram on the 256/8gb 13"?

    • No unfortunately, the ram is built into the laptop on the old model.

      • Presume the new model has built in soldered ram too?

  • +4

Just called office work to price beat the $1399 model and got one, seems like quite a few people are calling up and only 8 left.

    • Damn I didn't get the price beat when I called, but I was ringing about the model up from that.

    • +1

I got office works to price match but I think you'll need to find a store in stock as I guess they are old models!

      Thanks OP!

    • So how much OW give you ? $1399 - 5% = $1329.05 ?

    • Which office works did you call?

  • It's even cheaper than student price ! Will HN price match it ?

    • If you're a uni student, ask your Apple account manager. They'll be able to get it at a cheaper price. If you're a postgraduate student, that's even better.
      Departmental prices are pretty good.

      • I've never asked on campus for discount just browsed the online Apple store.. you reckon I should go in to campus and find an Apple account manager someone?

        I go to RMIT

      • I highly doubt this. These prices are almost Apple staff price.

  • +2

brought the new macbook pro $1887 with OW price match. nice!

    • Wow that's a steal! Will be great laptop with future proofed specs :)

    • Did you call them or get them in store? Online says OOS

      • Over the phone… delivered tomorrow apparently… as I missed the 11.30am cut off for same day with OW
Quite painless. I already have the macbook 12' 2016 but i dont like the one USB-c port and slower processor.

    • nice where did you bring it?

  • $1399 for a 13' Retina MacBook Pro is quite cheap I must say. I'd rather get that over the new MacBook Pro (without TouchBar).

    • Yes can't see much value spending an extra $500+ for the new one. Although I cant justify any of them after seeing that people who work at uni or company which buys apple can get the 15" (which is $2169.30 here) for $1500..

if anyone can hook me up with that deal.. please let me know..

  • Is this the 2015 version? If so, that's actually a pretty damn good bargain..

  • Are these the 2015 Macbook Pros?

    • im wondering as well

      • My guess is yes.. I've got a mid 2014 MBP and it's the 2.6GHz, these are 2.7GHz.

    • Yes 2015 with force touch trackpad.

  • Grabbed the last 11" from Mike End SA.

  • can definitely recommend the 13" 256gb 2015 model. bought mine at a premium last year but don't really regret. force touch is the stuff of legends, and still baffles me to this day. keyboard is solid and comparable to a good lenovo. performance is snappy and startup/shutdown is really fast. i am also a fan of the logo light, which has been killed off in newer models. get yourself a piece of history everyone.

  • Black friday is coming up as well soon guys, if stock lasts till then it might be a good day to buy ;)

  • Is it 2015 model or 2014 apple? thanks

    • +1

2015 model with force touch trackpad

      • +1

getting the 2015 15inch one as I like a bigger screen. 13inch is a bit too small for me. thanks op. ur a legend

        • All good, 15" is a steal! Used to retail for just over $3k which is insane.

        • @ShamelessBargains: as I almost bought a second hand 15 inch mid 2014 for 1k6 - this is steal

        • +1

@Bigbabo: yeah I don't trust used laptops anyway, just not the same experience. Who knows how many times they have dropped it, had it repaired, used it. Can't go wrong with brand new with full warranty :)
