Hmm, seems kind of expensive given the Virgin "sale" earlier this week :)

    • +8

      Full service, direct flights.

I'd pay $100 each way to fly direct and avoid lengthy, dull stopovers.
Also every time you have a connecting flight, the probability of issues/delays increases.

Bangkok return for $558 from Sydney (BestJet) is pretty good for full service. Normally $800 and can be higher depending on your dates.

I am curious why Bestjet is so much cheaper?

      • +4

There have been numerous posts about BestJet and how dodgy they are. Fare prices not as advertised, requests for scanned copies of credit cards, etc.

        • +1

Well I have booked a flight for next month through them and the price was as advertised and they didn't ask for scanned copies of anything.

They were $50 cheaper than the next best price. They seem to be consistently cheaper and I am curious as to why.

        • @GreatWhiteHunter:

I hope you spelt your name right. Had a friend that didn't and it cost ~50% of the ticket price to fix it. Chances are you will be fine with bestjet. Just hope that you are not one of the few that have problems.

        • @jimmej:
Did Bestjet have a choice ? You understand each airline has their own rules on costs of ticket changes. Some have relaxed rules, others don't.

Your friend made a basic mistake. He purchased a ticket without checking his name spelling ?? ETickets are linked to your name/passport. A name change is the same as cancelling and reissuing a ticket so of course your friend was subject to whatever fare change rule in place.

        • +1

You will do well to get a response from Bestjet for anything other than a sale. I would strongly advise to use another travel agent. Google bestjet and tripadvisor if you are not convinced.

        • @AsSeenOnTv:
Even if Bestjet are a pain or have additional costs, ticket changes can incur a charge like I said. Depends on the airline. China Southern are very flexible on some of their tickets. I changed one at no extra cost. Others (Emirates) usually impose a substantial fee for changes to their discount tickets

        • Booked my flights via bestjet during the Virgin 'sale' and got my tickets an hour later. Nothing went wrong

        • @redcreek200: There are definitely differences in the airlines, but my warning is about Bestjet as a travel agent regardless of the airline. In my case Bestjet just didn't respond to multiple emails and didn't answer multiple calls even after waiting 30-60 mins. We ended up changing through the airline directly which cost and extra ~$300 but we had no choice as we couldn't get a response from Bestjet.

      • Virgin sale was for full service too operated by Singapore Airlines. I don't mind staying longer at Singapore airport as I can go out.

        • Yeah, OP's comment in deal title implying low cost carriers don't offer full service isn't accurate. Plenty do.

        • @redcreek200:
Beer/wine is never included on a low cost carrier even if you choose 'full service' options of food+bag+seat
          ;)

        • @battler:
          Not true.
It is available on China Southern. No one will argue they are not a low cost carrier.

        • did you know where the Virgin sale was classified as full fare pricing or discounted fare? The difference could be hitting silver or gold status with Virgin.

        • @nightelves: Discounted. In fact it's the lowest category in the table. So mostly you'll only get 20SC per sector

        • @Redwood:

Dammit if I knew I would have piled on the flights.

        • @redcreek200: it is not a low cost carrier.

        • @ko0l: Sorry, bud, it is.
Kind of why their fares to Europe are usually about half that of the majors ;)

        • @redcreek200: They're the most expensive carrier to china though. And offer free food, flight entertainment and check in luggage. Budget carriers don't offer these for free. The majors usually cheaper to europe when on sale. (Just look at the etihad deals on ozbargain). You got to be an idiot to fly through china to europe anyways. Always fog in china which causes massive delays.

        • @ko0l: Always delays in China because of fog ? Yeah, whatever you say.

        • @redcreek200:

Yes, Smog and fog. You think they like to park their planes in china and pay hotel fees for passengers just becuase they like to?

Price and service wise they are no different to other premium airlines. Their most common complaints are delays in flights for stop overs in China and rude chinese passengers that have no manners.

I wouldn't say they are a budget airline just becuase of these issues.

Virgin sale wasn't a sale it was a mistake - but I know what you mean! looks like they will all get to go on their super cheap holidays too http://karryon.com.au/industry-news/airline/virgin-australia…

    • +1

But as your quotation marks suggests, it wasn't actually a sale. It was a set of mistake fares. Of course they are going to be cheaper — they weren't meant to be sold at that price!

  • +7

I always take the bestjet fare to Flight Center and they price match - this way you get a proper agent ticketing your travel - no dodgy business.

    • Hmm, it looks like Bestjet might be one of the handful of cases where you can invoke the Qantas.com Price Promise? Australian company with ABN listed on website and all that…

Found Perth - Singapore 13 Feb/27 Feb for $358.67 + return on Qantas + $8.00 cashback from Cashrewards. STA Travel

  • Qantas also has these specials from Adelaide but from Adl. Malaysia airlines is a better option.
    Checking early Feb 2017:
Adeleaide - Phnom Penh with Malaysia $743 - One transfer one way between 10 and 11 hours.
With Qantas: $765 - Two transfers one-way around 17 hours.

Pity it is with the airline renowned for pathetic poor service and snooty flight attendants who prefer to be on a Mardi Gras float - QF

    • +1

      fly Emirates.

    • I agree with hardya.

So many Australians rave about how great Qantas is. For safety yes (though they've been lucky in the last 10 years) - but for service, they are WAY down the list.

Anybody who flies overseas reasonably regularly will know Qantas service as a general rule is average at best - even in business class.

The contrast between Singapore Airlines and Qantas business class is stark.

Bestjet was set up by the wife of disgraced former Air Australia boss, Michael James, shortly after the collapse of the airline in 2012. Most of the complaints about Bestjet relate to their practice of cancelling reservations and asking for more money for new flights:

  • I've booked with Bestjet once, never had an issue. Although having read these negative posts, I don't think I'll book with them in future even if they are the cheapest. It's simply not worth the hassle.

It's amazing how negative feedback against a company spreads like wildfire.

  • The flights to Japan are over $1k return on sale. I wouldn't say that was cheap. I'm desperately trying to find flights to Japan for March that's not with air Asia.
Would it be possible to get flights for under $750 return to Japan at that time of year?

    • would you not recommend travelling to asia with air asia flights? I am planning my trip to asia within the next month or so and they seem to be the cheapest ones

  • For different fees and different aircraft options, (and Emirates is usually free seat selection) can also search Emirates sale link at http://www.emirates.com/au/english/destinations_offers/speci…

  • Anyone found $599 dates for SYD-KUL? I have family over there and it might be nice to pay them a visit even if we can't make it over for CNY…

    • +1

Alternatively, Air Asia mega sale starts 3am Monday morning I think.

      • Hmm, will have to keep an eye out! Though thinking about it some more I'd rather fly QF if I have the chance, and it looks like SYD-KUL is routed via SIN which could give me the chance for a short stopover there.

      • Yep. Mega Sale Starts 3am Sunday morning for people who are members (24 hours early access) I have snagged fares Syd - Kul on their sales a tad over $100 each way!! I am jealous of people whose final destination is KUL. But always a hassle for me to go through immigration twice for a cheap connection (savings to be had if don't book 'fly-thru')

    • Just saw AirAsia on their sale an approx $96 KUL - SYD one way. U have to shop around and be flexible with dates.

    • FWIW, I ended up booking CBR-MEL-SIN through qantas.com, and then filing a Price Promise request to get it down to $435 that STA Travel was selling it at (+ 1,000 QFF points bonus for using Price Promise). Which is a truly amazing price! I'll grab a separate ticket for SIN-KUL.

  • When does this sale end? Can't find any dates

    • today.
it is stated in the expiry date of the post.

  • Not the end of the 15th yet and the Qantas prices just changed in the website. Not happy :(

    • Refer below.

  • For those that missed out, I have found $605 return syd to BKK on Thai Air at byojet using coupon TGSAVE50.

I did not check any other dates or cities.
