FREE - Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Peer Connections Skills Training E-Course, Targets Emotion Regulation Difficulties

210

I'm currently undertaking this self-paced, free online course in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy conducted via BlackBoard/CourseSites & facilitated by Linfield College in Portland, Oregon & Rachel Gill, who is the instructor of the course. I located it through the website, http://ilovedbt.com after undertaking some DBT training under my psychologist's recommendation & finding it to be helpful.

For those who are unaware, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is a compassionate & evidence-based therapy style pioneered by Dr Marsha Linehan originally to treat suicidal behaviours, but since expanded to treat Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD; my diagnosis), & other severe & complex mental illnesses involving emotional dysregulation. Studies proving its effectiveness in treating these conditions, along with other conditions such as eating disorders, anxiety & substance use can be found online, & encouragingly support long-term positive outcomes in many who undertake skills training. Marsha used her knowledge of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy & as a Zen master to develop this therapy style, composed of 4 modules: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, & interpersonal effectiveness. More information about Marsha & DBT is located on her websites: The Linehan Institute & BehavioralTech.

From the link:

This is an experimental Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills training massive open online course (DBT-ST MOOC) for people with emotion regulation difficulties created by Rachel Gill, B.Sc., PSS. In this course, students learn to define, apply, and discuss 4 sets of life enhancement skills including core mindfulness skills, distress tolerance skills, emotion regulation skills, and interpersonal effectiveness skills. The DBT-ST MOOC integrates multimedia features, including over 10 hours of HD skills training videos, homework discussion forums, multiple choice quizzes, DBT diary cards, and if you download Blackboard IM you can chat with your peers in real time. The program design follows the evidence-based principles set forth by Dr Marsha M. Linehan in her innovative clinical manuals Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder, Skills Training Manual for Treating Borderline Personality Disorder, DBT Skills Training Manual Second Edition, and DBT Skills Training Handouts And Worksheets Second Edition. The primary objective of the DBT-ST MOOC is to provide a much-needed DBT skills training resource for people who do not otherwise have access to DBT. This pilot program shall be available to the public for FREE and continuously open for self-enrollment after December 1, 2015.

Doctor here. This is an evidence based approach for people who are looking for help in managing strong emotions and generally better management when distressed. It's been researched in 50+ trials and shown to be effective. I haven't looked at the course but the approach is proven. It won't fix everything (because nothing does) but it is better than 90% of the things I see online as long as you practice the skills regularly. As with all of these skills based programs, it all comes down to the amount of time you put in to applying skills each day.

I was studying this last year…pretty useful especially with BPD. I'm not sure how effective an online course would be but worth considering.

As you said, this is long term. A course of treatment with a therapist for BPD using DBT is generally a year or more…no short term fixes here. Despite that, if the course is well set up and encourages group discussion there will be a lot of great skills that can be taken on board and be of benefit for a LOT of people….

Great find, really hope this helps some people who read it

for people with emotion regulation difficulties created by Rachel Gill, B.Sc., PSS.

Well if she created the difficulties she definitely ought to fix them. :)
