I remember when Swatch watches were a massive thing as a kid in the 80s. I'm kind of surprised they are still around. I don't think I've seen many around lately.

They still have "boutique" retail outlets (e.g. Macquarie Centre in North Ryde). Otherwise, they own a hell of a lot of other brands -:

Breguet, Harry Winston, Blancpain, Glashütte Original, Jaquet Droz, Léon Hatot, Omega, Longines, Rado, Union Glashütte, Tissot, Balmain, Certina, Mido, Hamilton, Calvin Klein watches + jewelry, and Flik Flak.

So yep, they've done ok for themselves since the 80s!

    • Yep, the Swatch Group are a beast! They also own ETA, which makes a movement that is pretty much recognised as 'the standard. Also, their Sistem 51 range is gaining in popularity and are cool IMO. They have a 90 hour power reserve. Just don't break the strap because it is proprietary.

    • The Bourke St/Myer shop, I've only seen International students at the counter.

  • Recieve something that you probably won't like for $30.

  • I had one once. Their watches aren't accurate. Every few months you have to readjust the time by a few minutes. For a 'swiss' watch, it isn't known for accuracy. Also, the face scratches easily. It's not glass.

Swatch is like the KIA of swiss watches.

    • So it's equal in Quality to comparable European watches but cheaper retail price and made in Korea? I think your comparison doesn't match your complaint

      • Whether it's equal to other watches of similar price is irrelevant. The swiss are known for their accuracy, and this is a budget product like a Kia.

A swatch is like a German car but without the prestige or luxuries of its other brethren.

        • So, a Volkswagen?

I take it you've never owned an automatic swiss watch!
If you want accuracy, get a Japanese quartz.

      • Automatics have to be wound if left idle. That doesn't count.

But you're right, they don't appeal to me.

        • I think you have unrealistic expectations of accuracy.
Take a look here for some figures:
          http://www.chronocentric.com/watches/accuracy.shtml

An average quartz will be out by a minute after 2 months.
A $10,000 Rolex will be worse than that in a month.

My most accurate automatic gets close to average quartz accuracy.

  • Knowing my luck it's a good chance i'm gonna get a pink plastic strap watch with donald trump in the design as the surprise watch fro $30. I won't even take it if they give me $50 to wear it

    The designs are so ugly…
