I got 4TB drive about three years ago for around same price. Why haven't external HDDs got much bigger in 3 years? Serious question

Starting to reach physical limitations of areal density. New techniques have been developed to counter this and add more platters (e.g. Helium filling, shingled magnetic recording).

And with SSDs falling rapidly in price, particularly for higher capacities, there's less incentive for pushing paat some of the brick walls with traditional spinning media. You will still see 10TB HDDs and beyond, but they're more for enterprises using them as cold/archive storage. I expect with the rise in streaming and cloud services the demand for large capacities in your PC will fall.
