OZBARGAIN10

Hi Ozbargainers,

While I am still new, this website has given me so much joy so I wanted to give something back for its 10th Birthday.

I joined just after the eneloops flood so I don’t have those Ozbargain credentials. However, thanks to Ozbargain my mobile costs are way down, and I have enough SD cards.

Anyway, I digress, I’m offering 20% off for all new patient examination, x-rays, and clean with me. The reason it’s with me only is I can take a pay cut myself but can’t make anyone else in the practice do that since they’re not ozbargainers.

Look I know it’s not an amazing bargain but it’s the best I could do because running a practice that I feel comfortable with has high overheads. There’s really no way we can compete on some of the prices out there if I want to:

  • Take time and use the quality materials to treat people well.
  • Not pressure practitioners into over-servicing.

Maybe it’s a dying business model that will die at the hands of corporate or health-fund owned practices but our current business model isn’t cheap.

Breakdown of the Deal

Normal Price of examination, 2 X-rays, and a discussion of your oral health is $173.

Most people only need 2 X-Rays but some may need 4 if they have wisdom teeth. Each extra X-ray is $40.

You may need more than the general X-rays if there are any specific issues we need to assess e.g. infection at the roots of the tooth.

Generally, we don’t do a clean at the first visit because we like to take some time to discuss and come up with a plan with you.

If you’re one of those lucky people with little or no dental problems and there’s heaps of time left, then we can do a clean as well.

An examination, 2 X-rays, clean, and fluoride is normally $325

The deal is 20% off on the above regular prices.

For the cynics out there. We are conservative and would not recommend treatment unless we think it’s necessary. There will never be any pressure to accept any treatment. Our job is to tell you what we see, what your options are, and hear what YOU want us to do. Because we don’t compete on fees, we are never pressured into over-servicing. I am happiest when I see someone without fillings and we can just do some maintenance.
Remember, we won’t do any other treatment without your consent and discussing the cost with you first.

Why only preventive treatment? The dental board has very strict rules on advertising and for good reason. Health practitioners shouldn’t rush people into unnecessary treatment using “deals”. Only sign-up if you haven’t had a check-up in a while and you always have the option of cancelling. Just give us the courtesy of advanced notice. It also means I need to make some Ts & Cs.

tl;dr

Treatment Price
Exam, 2 X-Rays, discussion $138.4 ($173 regular price)
Exam, 2 X-Rays, discussion, clean, fluoride $260 ($325 regular price)
Additional X-Rays $32 ($40 regular price)

If you are currently happy with your dentist, please stick with him or her. Don’t churn please haha.

Please be nice guys and gals. We are just a small practice. I’m hoping to meet some ozbargainers and hopefully you enjoy your visit.

I really do know it’s not much. We’re definitely not the cheapest out there and we’re probably not local so I’m not expecting much of a response but I want to at least feel like I’ve given something. If I were a retailer, I would be going crazy slashing prices!

On another note, are you sick of health insurance premiums outstripping CPI while your rebates don’t even keep up? It may be time to switch (and score some freebies from the PHI companies as well).

Don't talk down your own deal so much. 20% off is very decent, given the cost of dentistry. You sound more honest than my current dentist, who charged me for coming in to receive a quotation :) (needless to say, this did not encourage me to go ahead with the non-urgent treatment).

    • Thank you for the encouragement. I know that our practice is not the cheapest out there (even with the deal) so it's not really OZB material but I wanted to give something back.

I just don't think I can practice the way I like to if I try to compete on price.

My experience with cheap dentists makes me not want to visit those anyway. They either push stuff on you that you don't need, or you end up having remedial work done with a proper dentist down the track.

        it's not really OZB material

You are mistaken. Ozbargainers are not after "cheap quality", but good prices on premium quality services/products.

    +1 for honesty

    • Thanks. That's how I like to practice. :)

  • Also thanks to the person who edited and out NSW in the title. My mistake!

  • I've been going to 2 practices in Sydney and Melbourne that don't charge a gap above your ancillary cover (any - not tied to health funds) and never had an issue. I'm lucky because it's always been checkup/clean and occasional X-ray so no experience with other procedures. Sometimes it's a matter of finding the 'right' practitioner within the 'budget' practices. I tend to gravitate towards certain nationalities that from my experience are generally very conscientious but eveyrone's mileage will of course vary. The thousands I've saved over the years I probably would have spent on Ozbargain!!

    • It sounds like you've found some gems and it's great that you keep going back. Nothing better than people coming back to show us that we're doing something right.

  • B-But i'm scared of dentists because of my poor oral health.

Which came first? The chicken or the egg?

We don't bite. Just promise not to bite us!
