gee that is awesome that is the same price as frugal news.

    • For much more retention

      • Oh yeah 5 times the retention. Awesome deal.

  • I just checked where I was getting my usenet data from and hot damn, since I moved to internode and started using their usenet as my top priority server my three block accounts have only taken 9% of the load. They're going to last for years until they run out. Probably a decade or more. Cool.

    • Came here to post this - Plenty of people being screwed by TN for downloading too much…HOWEVER, I was with them with a 500gb block account and had no issues, speeds were great and no missing articles for automated gear.

Also if you can wait, I'd get a usenet.farm sub once they go on sale in a couple of days, most likely 30-40% off - it'll be more expensive, but it covers their own backbone plus 2 other backbones (highwinds/XS). So you are effectively getting 3 for the price of 1. Super fast, always complete (even for stuff 1000 days old), super slow takedown.

I have been with Thundernews for 5 years ($5 special for 2012 Black friday to be exact) and happy to give them a big thumbs up.
They account for 95% of my downloads over that time (I use an Astraweb block account as a backup… Still have plenty of GBs sitting there).

Be warned, I did get paused one month after downloading a few TBs.
Also, if you pay by paypal, they may block access to adult content (as required by paypals terms and conditions).

Anyway, grab this deal before it's sold out again. It is the first time I've see then $5 deal back since 2012.

    • How does it compare with Astraweb (which is what I use at the moment).

      • +1

Fairly well from what I can tell.

Thundernews is my preferred, and astraweb (and another block account somewhere) are secondary.
.> 95% of my downloads have come from thundernews. The rest is picked off the others.
(Even this may not be accurate, as I set them all to primary at one stage).

Speeds is great (by Aussie standards), retention is huge.

  • And what's the speed like? Just says broadband speed

    • Just tested it, downloaded a 1.3gb file "Downloaded in 3 mins 2 seconds at an average of 7.1 MB/s"

      On Optus Cable 100Mb/sec

i am on 100mbit too, anything over 50mbit i am happy with. Thanks for the info

  • Nice deal for those not with iinet/internode. If and when iinet every get rid of theirs, I will jump onto this!

    • How does one with iiNet take advantage of newsgroups?

      • Just use their servers (which redirect to Astraweb). I'll send you a PM with the details.

        • I'd be keen for iiNet details too if possible…Cheers!

I would add that I've been a USD$5 per month user for Thundernews for around 2 years or so…whilst I do get a number of incomplete downloads, it was better than my previous provider, and have remained a ThunderNews customer for 2 years.

I only use free indexers (and would be happy to hear suggestions on new ones as my previous go to, crawler, seems to have fallen off the perch), and don;t have a another provider account…

  • Any recommendations for indexers that are open to registration?
(Or does anyone have an invite available?)

Sent you a PM, also Dog is currently open for Black Friday

      • Only trial period though (is it for 10 days?)

        • Yeah 10 days then you need to purchase a yearly membership

      • Would like a PM invite for Dog if possible, thanks

        • +1

          Dog is currently open

        • @SuperC: Ahh mis-read the post, thanks

      • @ SuperC
Hi. If it's not too rude to ask, could you please send me an invite too? Thanks heaps.

      • Hi,
New to this. Could I get an invite if possible ?

        Thanks

    • Hope to ride your coat tail

Edit - looking for an invite as well

    Looking at site, I think it's $10 USD for a 200GB Block, not 10GB?

    • Thanks, fixed it now.

Thanks! Finally gave my Astraweb the boot.

  • How does thundernews compare to astra? i get a lot of incomplete downloads with astra, hoping to find something more reliable. I tested out the trial with usenet farm and grabbed a few things which were incomplete through astra, only downside was the speed - 3mb/sec on 100/40.
