you can get an asus strix for the same price

    • +1

I was about to say the same haha

    • Is the strix better. I have completely lost tough since my last PC build. I'm at a stage where I am looking to just replace MBD,GPU,CPU,MEM this card could handle everything out there currently at max settings right?

      • Looks like the Asus turbo just uses the reference blower cooler which are really loud. The strix uses triple fan cooling solution which is usually quieter.

        • I currently have a Gainward GTX 670 2GB.. it's getting on a bit. It's funny I used to run starcraft 2 and diablo 3 at max settings. now sometimes I get lag even though drivers are up to date and I have recently done a format to clean out all the crap. Must be time for a new system. I am one of those people who reads a lot about something before I buy it, so a complete system build is stressful. But, needs must when new games are out!

        • @releasethekr4cken: you may just have to replace the thermal compound on your cpu and gpu. The task is relatively easy for the cpu but more difficult depending on the particular gpu, have a look on YouTube for some good step by step. That video card should easily handle those 2 games as it's got plenty of power for 1080p gaming.

        • Oh ok, ill check out the GPU, that makes sense as over time it would have broken down, decrease heat transfer and reduced performance!

        • +1

@releasethekr4cken: yes many modern cpu employ thermal throttling where they'll temporarily underclock themselves to reduce heat generation if they are getting too toasty.

Once they are a few years old replacing the thermal compound and properly cleaning the crap out of the fans with compressed air (secure the fan before blowing though so you don't wreck the bearings) / brushing leftover dust off with a paint brush will get your gear performing like new again.

I think in the case of the 600 series GPUs that you might get better performance on them with older nvidia drivers also

Someone on reddit suggested this driver

          http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/geforce-362-00-whql-driv…

On Windows 10 tell Windows to not update the driver automatically:
Right-click Start button and click Control Panel.
Click System, then Advanced System Settings on the left-hand side.
Click the Hardware tab, then Device Installation Settings.
Choose No and click Save Changes.

GTX 1060 SLI or this? Both same cost.

      You can't SLI a pair of 1060's

      • +4

Die Devil Nvidia. You did this on purpose so poor people can's have the performance of a $1000 GPU. Poor people are people too.

        • +1

A pair of Rx480's would be a better bet than a pair of 1060's anyway for better future proofing.

What do you guys think of the EVGA 1070 FTW on french amazon. It comes to 370 euro in my cart (527AUD using currency conversion or 547AUD using amazon conversion). Very close to pulling the trigger, just want to check what you guys think. Looks like it gets the watch dogs 2 promotion as well.

    • Hope you bought it, that's showing up as 429 euro now :(

      • +1

        Go to checkout. VAT removed.

    • EVGA 10 series cards are dodgy, they have issues with the VRM not being sufficiently cooled and if you play an intense game the card will burn out the VRM and need to be sent back for replacement.

Get another brand please if you want it long term.

    • +1

Yeah I was close to doing the same until the cooling issues. I went with the asus strix which has great reviews and get the watchdogs promo too.

  • Anyone else get super excited seeing the US price first? Still a great deal. But not quiet as good as I first though.

Not quiet sure when to bite the bullet on a new video card. Its almost certain that when I do there will be a better deal the following day.

    • +1

I got excited it was a 1070 in general. But then saw it waa from the US. I'll wait for local stock. Almost pulled the trigger on the recent 1080s but decided it was overkill for my needs (1080p 60fps). Extra power is always nice but saving money is better.

      • 1070 is probably overkill for 1080p 60fps - perhaps RX480 for that?

If you are going 1070 best to upgrade to 1440p screen?

      • A gtx1070 may be overkill now for 1080p but it will last longer before you want or need to upgrade again.
It'll probably give you another year or two over a gtx1060 or rx480.

        • Exactly my thoughts. I currently have a 970 so the 1060 and 480 are not much of an upgrade. The 1070 also leaves me with options to upgrade to a 1440p screen (as you mentioned) if I ever choose to.

        • @dqtl74: just wondering if you have a 970 and are playing with 1080p, why bother upgrading at all at this stage? wait till you need it when you will find a 1070 even cheaper or perhaps some of the other cards scheduled for the next 6 months.

        • @gromit: the 970 is starting to show it's age in some more recent games and I like to play at max or near max settings. The return I could get selling it now would make a new 1070 cost $250-300 (the 970 is going for $200-250 right now but that will obviously fall in the future) so it's not such a large upgrade cost for some future-proofing.

  • Anyone seen the Asus stricks version for the same price? Under $500 is great and about to bite the bullet on thos

    • This deal isn't under $500 because after you add in shipping it is over that.. Yes the Strix version was the same price once delivery was factored in via the first post in this section. But is now sold out.
