New Three $29, $49 and $69 Cap with FREE Mobile Data for New and Existing Customers

320

From 1 July 2010, Three has upgraded their $29 and $49 mobile cap. The new plans are:

For $29 Cap you get $180 of calls to anyone, unlimited three to three AND 50MB of mobile data per month.

For $49 Cap you get $450 of calls to anyone, unlimited three to three AND 500MB of mobile data per month.

For $69 Cap you get $650 of calls to anyone, unlimited three to three AND 750MB of mobile data per month.

NEW $79 Unlimited cap + 1GB of mobile data

Iphone caps changes are also anticipated:
$39 Cap: $180 of Cap value, $200 of three to three calls and 150MB of data
$49 Cap: $450 of Cap value, $270 of three to three calls and 500MB of data
$79 Cap: $800 of Cap value, $450 of three to three calls and 1GB of data

In order to get the new plans, simply call three customer care to request the change to the new plans. It will be effective at your next billing cycle. I called to upgrade to the new $29 cap.

Customer must be on existing contract or signing new contract, e.g. you cannot be out of contract. The contract length will not change and you cannot move back to your old plan once upgraded. The call rates might change for some who are on older plans (e.g. I was not on the unlimited three to three plan, call cost went up by $0.10 per minute, please check with three care before upgrading).

NOTE: My gf just told me it appears three is advertising as 90c/min rather than 45c/30 sec and therefore may charge in blocks of one mintue. If this is the case, the new plan might not be suitable for everyone.

  • excellent, im on $49 cap plan and used to pay $8/month for the 500mb!

so glad this is for existing customers as well.

    will call 'em soon

  • Does the mobile data stack with the value packs?

For e.g Im currently on the old $29 plan that does not include internet quota and I've also signed up to a $5 /m (100 megs) contract.

If you switch to the new plan do you get 100 meg + 50 meg of mobile data usage?

    • I would think so, but then again i'm not from three, check with the customer care when you do the upgrade.

      • scrimshaw, yes it does. I called and upgraded my plan. I was advised that the plan will give you the data on top of what you're already paying for. Since you're paying 5 dollars for 100mb, they will still give you the 100mb + whatever the cap provides (50mb for 29, 500mb for 49 and so on)

  • I don't see the $49 iPhone with 500MB on their website.

    • From the post - "This has not shown up on their website yet."

  • What do you mean regarding:

"For $49 Cap you get $450 of calls to anyone, unlimited three to three AND 500MB of mobile data per month"

    but then you say:

"Note the iphone plan three to three calls are not unlimited and does not change and all other plans does not change."

So do I get free 3 to 3 or not? Currently I have an iphone with 3 on the $49 cap with $300 of calls, free 3 to 3 for 300min and 250mb of data. Also do you still retain their $100 worth of international calls?

    Thanks

    • There are non iphone $49 caps(regular caps) and iphone $49 caps.

The iphone $49 caps dont change. so no free 3 to 3 for iphone caps.

    • I'll re do the post to clarify - based on your iphone cap, your three to three would not change

      • Thanks, its easier now to understand. Do I loose my $100 worth of International calls (part of my $300 worth of calls) or do you still retain that?

        Thanks

        • I think so, apparently all calls credits can now be used for international calls, but check the call rates with customer care.

          • @ychen8: Yeah now you can use the full credit to call international numbers but the calls rates are higher.

  • Details are up online

    http://www.three.com.au/cs/ContentServer?c=Page&pagename=Thr…

Edit: Sorry they are the combo caps

    Edit Take 2:
Nope they are up. I went to 3 Pricing and selected to view new caps. (Not iphone)

  • !!!!!! OMG - This is why 3 sucks dogs balls !!!!!!!!!!

I just spent 20min of my life with customer care, value optimisation team, trying to explain what are the new iphone $49 deals.

All he said has changed was that the $100 international call limit has now merged with the $350 call allowance so you get a flat $350 to do whatever you want with. NO additional 3 to 3 and NO additional MB data.

I don't know where you got your info from ychen8 but its not right from the call i just had.

Suggest you provide proof of the new plans before anyone else wastes their time !! (for iphone users anyway)

    • +1

and he confirmed I am not eligible to switch to the standard $49 plan

    • Try to select "change your rate plan" or talk to someone else, must of them don't know about it until they check on their system. As mentioned, this is not officially promoted yet.

And I agree, three customer service is horrible.

      • goober, give it another go. You can argue that it's on the website now.

  • if i upgrade to this new cap plan, will my contract start fresh again? As in, for example I'm already like 5 months on 24 months contract, if I upgrade to the new contract, will my contract finish in 24 months or simply continuing from previous contract (i.e. 24-5 = 19months left)?

    • No, you will still have 19 months left.

  • Are they still charging extra for "Roaming Areas" which cost 50cents /mb ??

Just be carefull that they are not included in the cap value…

    • Whats the deal with this, now that they have merged into Vodafone, why isn't the vodafone network used instead of Telstra roaming? Solution, switch to vodafone, as of the 21st July, there will be free calls between 3 and vodafone networks on all plans over $29/month!

    • Turn off Roaming on your device. I'm not sure which device you use, but Android phones have the option to disable data connection when roaming so you won't be charged a cent. I'm sure they will still charge 50 cents a megabyte for roaming rates. I live in the Melbourne city area and I still go into Roaming in certain places (like Crown and maybe QV).

  • I have the Blackberry $39 plan that many of us got a year ago. Can anybody confirm this will work too?

  • So can anyone confirm if the new caps are charged at 90c/min and International Calls are now merged with Cap Allowance?

    • Confirmed. There's a 10c increase in local call rates. It used to be 40c every 30 seconds (or 80c a minute). Now it's 90c a minute.

      • And combined with the per minute block charge, it's even more expensive.

  • The link has been updated

    http://www.three.com.au/caps

    • thanks, link updated

  • I was paying $39 for 29 cap plan for 2 years with 3. Starting from recent months almost every call came or taken from mobile when I was at home dropped. This is something to do with the 3 coverage. I am living in south east suburbs of Melbourne and just 20 km away from SBD. This is very crowded area. Still 3 has got many pockets in this area where they don't have signals. The signal level indicator is going up and down all the time. Sometimes it shows full signal until I press the send button to make a call. Then it goes to the bottom and can not make a call. I called 3 many times and still no solution. I am now out of the contract for 2 months. Still thinking if I should stay with 3 or not.
Lots of my friends are on 3. So if I get unlimited 3 to 3 then the call dropping should not be a very big issue. But this deal is not valid for existing 3 customers out of contract and no unlimited 3 to 3 for iPhones, which is bad. There's no solution for me with 3 :(

    • Free calls between 3 and vodafone as of the 21st July. I think vodafone might have better coverage.

    • so? As stated, connect with Vodaphone, the cap will be similar you'll use different towers (they might merge) still can call others on 3 for free and soon they can call you for free too.

      Vodaphone & 3 = Vodaphon3

To anyone wondering… This is what's new:

For local calls: They used to charge you 40 cents per 30 seconds on the old plans. And they charged you every 30 seconds. On the new plan, you pay 90 cents per minute and they charge you per minute even if you talk just 10 seconds.

For international calls: I call Singapore. There's a big change here. Originally, out of my $350 on 49 cap, I could use $100 for International calls. For Singapore it used to be 95 cents every 30 seconds or $1.90 per minute. For the new 49 cap, I get $450 for credit and I can use all $450 for international calls as well, but they charge $2.20 per minute even if I talk just 30 seconds. That's a big difference but considering that there's 100 dollars extra in credit, the new 49 cap makes more sense to me especially because I had 500mb already and now with the included 500mb on 49 cap, I get 1GB. I use more Data anyway.

For the people upgrading to the new 29 plan, note that you only get 30 dollars more in credit, and if you make International calls, this plan is going to use up your credit much faster depending on where you call since I'm sure they increased the International call rates a fair bit.

    • -1

Incorrect: calls to Singapore are 40cent per 30 seconds. It's now $2.20 a minute on these new plans. It is now 2.75 times the original amt.
(you can do a search for these old rates.)

I think the new plans are only good if you are local. International calls are now way more expensive and seriously not worth it.

      • Really? Sorry man. The CSR told me it was 90 cents per 30 seconds before.

        • Wait, your call rates might be correct but I think your logic is kinda flawed. Note, I said kinda flawed. Because the new cap is situationally quite effective.

First off you get unlimited 3 to 3 calls. That was only 200 minutes before. So yeah, for local calls this is better like you said.

But, even at 40 cents per 30 seconds, or 80 cents a minute, I can only call Singapore for 125 minutes because only 100 dollars of the credit is available for international calls. To get 125 minutes on the new cap, however, I need to spend $275 of my credit as you said (2.75x). But again, at 2.20 on the new cap, I can call Singapore for 204 minutes because I can use the full cap amount. Granted, that leaves me no more credit to spend but I still have unlimited 3 to 3.

Out of my original 350 on the old cap, I only used around 200 each month mostly because I meet my international calling limit and also some local calls (international 100, local 100). As I said before, to get 125 minutes to Singapore on the new cap I need to spend 275 credit. So, this still leaves me 175 credit for local calls and unlimited 3 to 3 AND gives me 500mb for my Android.

So yeah, all in all, the new plan is definitely good for people that make international calls as well. It just depends on how you use your cap I guess.

          • @ragflan: Yups, i agree with you. The difference came up as I was calculating using the $29 Cap while you were using the $49 Cap.

The new $49 Cap probably has better value than the old Cap.
However, the reverse is true for the $29 Caps.

            Old $29 Cap: $100 limit, 80cent/min gives 215 mins.
            New $29 Cap: $180 credit, $2.2/min gives 82 mins.

My rationale for it being more expensive takes into account the possibility of exceeding your Cap.

The fact is, in most cases, Three make money not from your Cap, but from downloads, services and excess charges.

With higher rates, excess charges adds up pretty fast.

            • @amkssg: Just a small correction:

              Old $29 Cap: $100 limit, 80cent/min gives 125 mins.

              • @winter: oops… thanks

                • @amkssg: bsmksg, yeap I agree with you. I honestly believe Optus is a better network than 3 is. But just the ability to make international calls from your mobile without getting charged extra is the only reason I'm with 3. On the 59 Social Cap, Optus gives so much more.

I find myself using my phone more and more for data than calls. Optus currently have the best deal for data on the 59 Social Cap. Anyway. Hopefully once NBN is in full flow in capital cities, hope the networks provide even more data for use.

  • IPHONE CAPs: i rang 3 this morning about iphone and the lady said that the changes are for cap plans only as of today. iPhone cap changes will happen really soon and to call back in 10 days or so.

    • I just called them as well, and there are changes, basically the new iPhone plans are exactly the same, except the 90c/m thing, and getting to use all the cap on International calls. Everything else is pretty much the same. Not like what the bargain up there says, $450 calls etc.. nothing like that!

      • if you read what i wrote you would have seen this has already been covered

  • Just for general info - if you're outside 3's 3G Zone, does it kick over to Telstra's NextG (850) network? If so, why don't they show this on the coverage map?

    • No.. defn no. only telstra GSM network and that if there are still other carrier (except telstra) available. Example, voda & optus doesnt have signal on Melb City loop, Telstra have — 3 wont have signal.

If let say in wagga wagga, Optus has signal, 3 will roam to Telstra GSM (not NextG).

      • I have an iPhone 3GS with Three, and I can definitely confirm that it roams to NextG with Telstra in certain areas. It seems to roam with NextG when I am in more remote places, and only 2G (EDGE) when I'm on the "fringe" of metropolitan regions.

        Reading this (old) news article, it seems that some areas will roam to Telstra GSM, whereas others will roam to Telstra NextG;

        http://www.itwire.com/business-it-news/technology/24472-3-no…

Edit: b8wto below seems to know what the go is.

    • Telstra 3G roaming only applies to Areas outside the Metro Area and my towers that would normally serve 2G customers. This means in an area with 3G ONLY, 3 customers will not have access to Telstra towers with the roaming agreement. (found this out the hard way on Kangaroo Island (manual select 3G roaming = access denied))

  • No unlimited calls to Voda yet?

    • "Coming very soon, you'll be able to speak to almost 6 million people including your friends, family and workmates on the 3 and Vodafone networks in Australia anytime and for as long as you like and as often as you like with unlimited standard national voice calling. This is available to all customers like you who connected or upgraded on to one of our $29 Caps or higher after March 11th 2010!"

      21st July according to CNet.

  • Is there any monthly minimum usage for these caps?

    • Nope. You pay the full price of the cap regardless of how much you use.

  • all the new caps give you unlimited facebook too?

    • It says 'social networking sites' under free stuff in caps. Can anyone confirm if its free…

  • Just called and the customer service rep was really helpful, if a little confused. Upgraded my $29 plan.

    Confirming:
    * Your existing contract should NOT be lengthened!
    * NO contract change costs!

I'm going to get a contract change charge on my next bill, since the system doesn't support the deal yet. The charge will be credited to my account afterwards…

Maybe the best thing to do is to wait a few days before changing plans, until the Three database updates with the "deal". Probably save quite some time and hassle.

  • Argh my new month started today, so i have to wait till 1st August. What a pain.

  • Hope they put Legend on 3 as well.

  • OMG, the international calling rate to call the US for the $29 cap went up by 175%!!!!

It used to be $0.40 per 30 sec, now it's $2.20 per MINUTE.

    • interesting, looks like its a flat rate now for all countries for international.

      can someone please confirm?

      • same for calling Hong Kong
it used to be $0.40 per 30sec, and its $2.20 now per minute

        • might want to check that the rate hasnt gone up for all caps, old and new. sometimes they increase it for old and new caps

        • Same for Singapore and lots of other countries.

Any country that used to be $0.40 per 30sec is now $2.20 now per minute.

The news plans are only good if you only make local calls.

If you intend to make international calls, do not change to the new plan.

          • @amkssg: check my other post in the vodafone thread:

it seems the international calling rate under vodafone's new plan is more reasonable. For example, calling the US will be $1.00 per minute.

  • I will stick with my old contract until that expires in a few months. I don't like the way that 3 have made calls more expensive… They seem to have worked out a new formula that makes it look like you get better value, but due to the call charges you end up using your cap much quicker. I used to use justprepaid and they used to have no flag fall and charged by the second. They have even changed there deals for the worse (think they are vodafone reseller).

It's the typical boys club.. all the mobile phone companies are happy to not compete with each other too much so they can all get a high profit margin… u only need to look abroad to see how much better the deals are.

    • This is what happens when all of the major mobile providers merge into a small few. It's the new Australian Telecommunications Cartel.

  • I just upgraded my $39cap (which was only available online) to a $29cap with $180calls & 50mb data.
When I joined for my $39 cap, I also added a membership data plan which was $5 for 100mb for 12months (still contracted for another 7 months). Couldn't cancel the additional plan, but they have 50% off the $8 plan which gives me 500mb for the left over 7 months I have, so I upgraded!

  • +2

They really need to come back to reality with these pricings…

    $49 cap = $450 credit? Call rates 90c per minute? 35c flagfall?

    Why not just make it:

    $49 plan = $49 credit. Call rates 9.8c per minute. 3.8c flagfall.

While they're at it, why not give the $49 cap $4.5 million a month of included credit? You'd only pay a low low price of $9000 per minute for your calls with a $3500 flagfall.

Its all the same at the end of the day, unless you exceed your cap of course!

    • Lol, I'm glad I'm not the only one that find these plans ridiculous, however I understand the underlying motive is to attach more value to the plans than they really have.

Virgin has the netbeans plan which has a call rate of 10c / minutes…

    • +3

and the exceed the cap is exactly where they make the money. so im guessing $9000/min might be a little over the top if u go over ur cap.

  • As I commented on earlier post this per minute billing and data charges while roaming will make it more expensive.Three wil push you to new plan if you call them for anything. This is what they do whenever plan changes. When I discussed this witha three CSR last week I was told the customers wanted per minute billing.I asked her how is it making economical, she didn't have an answer. She even offered me few dollars off for few months if I move to new cap plan.

    • if you call locally, its actually no big difference because of the extra cap credit. unless u call a LOT of < 30 second calls. with the added web data, im changing for sure.

international calling is fine from my home phone on a phone card.

  • So if you signed up last june to the old caps, is it a no-brainer to upgrade to thesE?

    • If you do not call internationally, then these new plans are great. Just be sure not to exceed your cap allowance.

If you do use your credit for international calls, then do not change your plan, as international rates on the new plans are ridiculously high.

So it really depends on how you use your plan.
Do note that local call rates on the new plans are 90cents a minute, compared to 40cents per 30 sec on your current plan.

  • Hi guys. I was wondering I still have around 5-6 months left for my contract with '3' of 2 year. Is it possible that I call up customer service and request this deal? As in I will receive free facebook and such with also the change in call rates. Therefore its just switching/adding more stuff to my previous contract.

    Thanks

    • It is possible you can call up now and begin a new contract, with a new handset. Usually after 18 months they may consider waving the remainder of the contract if you sign another.

  • Anyone got an update on the iphone caps?
