  • is this really a very very good bargain? (quality and price wise)

    • I'd say yes. Not much comes close for the price/value except Chinese tablets.

      • +3

        Lenovo is a Chinese brand.

        • They certainly are, however their quality of product is usually substantially higher than your run of the mill Chinese goods.

        • Lenovo is a Chinese brand.

Using that logic so is Apple and Sony.

You can't compare the no name tablets against this unit. The build quality, functionality, finish and support are totally different.

        • @Maverick-au:

Actually no, that's not the same.

Lenovo is a Chinese owned, operated, RnD and made brand.

Sony is Japanese owned operated and RnD. Only the manufacturering is Chinese.

Actually yes it is, Lenovo was spun off from IBM and many of the notebook staff stayed with the company so you get the same people working on products not to mention all the IP which was built up when it was owned by IBM. This is not just some Chinese company that started up cloning similar devices and getting them 95% working before moving onto the next product but a company that matches or beats all other major manufacturers.

Sony is Japanese owned operated and RnD. Only the manufacturering is Chinese.

So why do Sony notebooks suck so much with all sorts of problems and are unsupported early on in their life whereas Lenovo notebooks are pretty bulletproof with support ongoing for extended periods?

        • @Maverick-au: Sorry Maverick. Lenovo has been around a long time before they acquired the Wintel arm of IBM (first the desktops/laptops and later the X-Series). They started in Beijing in 1984, moved to HK in 1988 and took over IBM's PCs in 2005. Its normally what happens when you have a cashed up bunch of Chinese investors who want to break out of their limited domestic market etc.

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenovo

But you are right in saying that most of the IBM staff stayed on with Lenovo during the sale of the PCs and X-Series Servers (I got a few mates in those teams). However, I must absolutely state that Lenovo <> IBM when it comes to quality and build. Just comparing the T series Thinkpads and you will see the incredible difference whereby IBM made the Thinkpads with Titanium alloys (T4x), Lenovo went the cheap and its just fully plastic (T6x). My T42p lasted 10 years before giving up. I cannot see any real modern laptops that can last for that long (maybe the super expensive original Macbook Pros can).

As you said though the same applies to all modern products from fridges to notebooks to TVs. Nothing is built like they used to be but I can say that the generation 1 and 3 X1 carbons that I have are bulletproof with top build quality, super light and the keyboard is as good as any of the thinkpad keyboards even going back 15 years.

Even the more recent T series were as well put together as the older ones.

Lenovo have their cheaper notebooks as well which can cause some damage to the brand but so do all the other big manufacturers.

        • @Maverick-au: Well.. maybe the more recent stuff is better, but the first 5 years of transition had some atrocious products and the T-Series was definitely crap and did not last during this time. The recent X1's and Yogas are quite nice in design, but its still not that much better quality than an equivalent classed laptop (Toshi, Asus, HP etc) but asking a pretty high premium for one.
Anyway, just on topic - Lenovo is 100% Chinese owned and controlled. They do have external design teams worldwide (remains of the IBM PC, X-Series and Motorola mobile groups), but still manufactured in China as does every other brand out there.

        • @Maverick-au:

Buying out a Western company doesn't suddenly make you non-Chinese.

Staff merging also doesn't make the quality better either, most of the important discussion are made by (Chinese) management, not the engineers.

Just look how shitty Moto is now with Android updates, since Lenovo destroyed the brand.

        • Crikey. I didn't realise a simple comment would evoke such a strong response. I'd suggest that tech brands need to be re-evaluated continuously because with the rate of change the fall / rise can be very quick.

Would people consider Xiaomi a no-name brand?
I like my Moto X Style, but the lack of updates means I'll most likely be looking elsewhere.

Motorola had been shit for a long time and has had big problems well before Lenovo purchased them.

        • @Maverick-au:

Motorola were great when Google owned them.

In what way? They haven't been good for at least 10 years.

        • +1

          @Maverick-au:

Their device's were running near stock Android and they released up dates fast.

        • @PainToad: Updates still come pretty fast - my old man has a Moto G and it's still getting updates (faster than my Samsung S6)

  • Thanks Just found my Sons new Tablet. Really didn't want to buy a Chinese Intel based Tablet due to Android support (stuck at version 5) and local warranty.

  • MediaTek CPU…..Run away!

  • Just beware the GPU (graphics processor) in this unit is already stretched to its limit trying to render a full 1080p display (it was originally meant to only handle up to 720p)

It will not be great for more demanding games like Asphalt or Dead Trigger 2.

    • What about FHD movies? my old Nexus 7 is dying and this could be a good replacement.

  • +2

Can someone please point me to a good case / cover for this on eBay? There are so many similar lenovo versions for this.
