5-Star Airline All Nippon Airways SYD-Tokyo (Haneda) Direct Return $792.34 inc. 2 x 23kg Baggage May 2 to July 31

900

All Nippon Airways is one of the 5 star airlines rated by Skytrax. Yes, $8.34 more expensive than JAL for Sydney-Tokyo at the moment, but it is supposedly a better airline. The overnight flights mean that in 9 and a half hours, you wake up in Japan. I flew with them recently and the service is excellent and the aircraft is very new. Didn't get on any of the Star Wars jets though :(.

One of the best things is the 2 x 23kg baggage allowance - yup, up to 46kgs per person!

They are currently advertising a sale of $794 Sydney return, but the search returns $792.34 for most departure dates from May 2 - June 7 2017. See example

There are also limited dates for Sydney-Osaka $799.34 return.

Sorry, it seems much more expensive if you fly out of other Australian cities, since they are flying Sydney - Tokyo direct.

Make sure you choose "Economy (Lower Prices)" for the best fare, and if your dates are flexible, check 'Compare with fares three days before and after' to see the calendar of prices.

They fly into Tokyo Haneda airport daily. Here is the schedule:

From To Flight No. Departure Time Arrival Time
Sydney Tokyo (Haneda) NH880 20:55 05:25 (next day)
Tokyo (Haneda) Sydney NH879 22:10 08:30 (next day)

Re: Star Wars jet- I was fortunate enough to fly the R2D2 jet from Haneda to Sydney earlier this year. The interior is exactly the same as the other ANA planes, so don't worry, you're not missing out on much! :)

Thanks for the great post OP!

    • Oh I see, it's still cool from the outside though :)

  • Might I suggest a less cluttered title, e.g. SYD-Tokyo (Haneda) $792 return inc. 2 x 23kg luggage via ANA May-July dates.

Great deal BTW, would love to see ANA jets at YBBN in the future!

    • +1

      Thanks - have modified title.

  • I'd be keen if I could guarantee i'm getting the R2D2 Jet

    • Why? You are unlikely to get a good view of the fuselage from the terminal (for photos), hence spotters take up positions near the taxi/runways, and, as pointed out, the livery is the only thing different about this aircraft, not the interior.

"Hey I flew to Japan in an R2D2 plane"

Japan air is better. There economy seats are much better than ANA.

    • +2

I was gonna say from my personal experiences, JAL is equally good as ANA if not better.

      • +1

JAL is amazing. Old planes, not the safest, but the customer service and food is spectacular.

      • +7

JAL are the only 787 operator to use 8 abreast. On the Australian route they use the 9 abreast 777 unlike ANA who use the tight 9 abreast 787.

    • +3

There economy seats are much better than ANA.

      Where?

  • Last time I went to Japan I flew from Tokyo to Okinawa on their Pokémon plane which was a little strange but my kids liked it.

  • Page also mentions Fukuoka and Nagoya. I found some fares for about $940 to Fukuoka. Seems to be just the Haneda flight with two domestic flights tacked on in the middle.

I like overnight flights. Sleep the boredom away.

  • +4

I have no idea how good or bad ANA is, but the Skytrax 5 star rating is not something you can go by. If Garuda Indonesia can get it it can't be hard to get. Qatar is not particularly good either and is rated with 5 stars.

    • +2

Agreed, Skytrax should be called Skyshill, the only thing I trust are forums like ABT (Seatguru is OK, but now they are owned by TripAdvisor the veracity of their info is questionable).

    • +2

Garuda are excellent now - they totally overhauled just about everything.

    • When was the last time you flew Garuda and what were the issues?

    • +2

Wrong airlines to complain about, both Garuda and Qatar are fantastic in all classes. I'd question why Asiana, Hainan and EVA are included though.

      • +1

Questioning Asiana? Really? They are a fantastic airline. I have flown them many times. Great inflight service and they have recently introduced an A380 for the SYD to ICN route.

    • I guess it's all very subjective and probably depends on the class and perhaps even the actual plane configuration that you have flown.

But from personal experience there are miles between Singapore Airlines and the others on that list that I have flown. Emirates on the other hand is pretty good (certainly much better than Qatar) and is not rated 5 star…

  • +1

um thanks but i'll take JAL anyday. 9 hours in a 9 abreast 789 is only bearable if you have an empty seat next to you. On second thought why not just fly QA with 2-4-2?

    • I fly MEL <> NRT once every 6 weeks in JQ's dreamliner. Never had an issue with it and I'm 6'2.

      • +2

Its the seat width thats the problem. Also, you are paying JQ fares on that flight, i doubt you'd pay ANA fares for arguably even less comfortable seats.

        • +1

Why would the 9-abreast 789 seats be less comfortable than the 9-abreast 788 seats?

        • Also, you are paying JQ fares on that flight, i doubt you'd pay ANA fares for arguably even less comfortable seats.

The prices vary to above and beyond ANA's current sale price and I'm happy with it. The only time I change it up is if Qantas is on sale and I will pay a higher price on the JQ flight because of the direct route with a fantastic timing, I don't waste a day, and can go straight to work (That said it's changing in a few months back to Qantas and it's a day flight so my opinion will change at that point) and I use the Plus packs for FF points & status credits.

TBH, it's actually a very comfortable flight. Width wise, I may be touching shoulders with somebody but I'm going to on a QF or JAL flight too. My knees don't touch the back of the other person's chair, even at my height, and I always take row 49 which let's me sleep up against the window.

I should note that I have flown ANA's service from Sydney to HND before and found it quite good. I was fortunate enough to be upgraded to premium economy on my flight back and thought that was exceptional & above and beyond JAL's offering.

  • +3

Arriving at Haneda is a selling point too! Saving so much time and much cheaper to go to Tokyo.

    • How much cheaper? At Narita I was able to get a bus to Tokyo or ginza for 1000yen

      • +1

Narita is far from City centre

      • ¥580ish from Haneda to tokyo. By train, not bus. If you value your time more, then you know what to choose, because when I flew with JAL last year, I arrived at Narita at noon.

        • +1

I value my time and 41 minutes to Ueno on the Skyliner from Narita is fine. ¥2200 is a fair bit more expensive than ¥580 though but the trains are fast and comfortable.

        • If you can use the most out of its combined deal with Metro Pass, then it is worthed.

  • Thank you OP, with this airfare, i am curious where i should go in Japan (1st timer)?

    • +4

      Tokyo

    • +2

From my personal experience, I would say Tokyo first for the all around entertainment (Shinjuku is a must), Kyoto for a more traditional/landscape approach and Okinawa for the beaches.

    • +2

How much time do you have for the holiday?

If you like big modern cities, Tokyo is cool but also very crowded as expected. Kyoto is great as you get a mix of traditional (awesome gardens, temples) and modern (kyoto station is cool, so is the new railway museum). Osaka is great for food. I would also recommend Miyajima and Takayama.

      • Probably a week, i think I am inclined to go to smaller places, Miyajima and Takayama seems to be my picks :) Thanks!

        • +2

Miyajima and Takayama are both great. We also stayed at a little onsen town called Shibu Onsen which was great, not least because of the snow monkeys.

        • +3

You may find the Japan guide website useful - I've used it to research places to visit in Japan, it includes all the relevant information, highlights, how to get there, transport options and fares.

One memorable place I forgot to mention is Kamikochi, it was absolutely stunning in May. The Kiso valley is also very nice and off the beaten path.

    • Spend the whole time in Kansai. Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Himeji, and Mount Koya/Kii mountain range if you're interested.

(Note - you should fly into and out of KIX - makes this deal less useful!)

Tokyo is overrated and most of the cool stuff is more accessible in Osaka anyway. Tokyo is cool if you're really into exploring neighbourhoods, but it's a huge city, hard to find what you want and while public transport is good it often doesn't take you to the specific things you might be interested in.

      • +2

I would tend to agree - personally I prefer the Kansai area (includes Osaka, Kyoto, Nara etc) to Tokyo, and having been to Japan several times, I don't have much reason to visit Tokyo again. Tokyo can be really crowded and bewildering.

There's a travel show on Japan that just started on ABC Joanna Lumley's Japan that might give you some ideas.

As for relevance to the deal, you can still get connecting flights to Osaka - just try and see. When I flew with ANA I added flights to Osaka and it was about $40 difference with a stopover in Tokyo for 3 days.

  • I wish I waited longer for this deal to come around, I already booked a Syd-Haneda return flight from an IWTF deal a couple months back. Booked with AirAsia but it had a bunch of add on fees for meals/baggage etc. which amounted to $750 or so per person. I have to stopover at Kuala Lumpur as well and the trip totals about 20+ hours. Would've been much better just taking a one way ticket with this airline… Regretting it so bad right now!

ANA flies the 787 Dreamliner so you should arrived more refreshed. Cabin pressure is higher…

    :-)

    • Have you been on one? Dreamliner i mean. I have been and it's horrible, it's hot during the day and i feel sick like having a cold through out the two journeys. I personally would rather fly with an airbus or older Boeing.

      • I haven't been on a 787 but, I understand the humidity is higher in the cabin, along with air pressure. Sounds like you had a bad experience. Maybe the 787 program is faulty or, it was boarding from one weather experience to, a more consistently managed environment, like in that cabin…

      • That must have been the setting they had on that particular service. I've flown Dreamliners twice in the last week and they certainly weren't hot.

      • I have been and it's horrible, it's hot during the day and i feel sick like having a cold through out the two journeys. I personally would rather fly with an airbus or older Boeing.

That's very peculiar. As stated above, I fly JQ's Dreamliner to Tokyo every 6 weeks and I do find the flight far more comfortable than their old A330's (Or was it the A320?). My ear's don't have the pressure build up and the air isn't as stiffling.

    • You would think so due to the hype, but having flown on a United dreamliner the airline running the plane was actually MORE important than the type, because the 'better feeling' you get off the plane was negligible.

  • +2

    ANA's pricing is wacky though.

    If you want a one-way fare - $3,500!

  • +1

Hopefully such price wars will burn Jetstar and Qantas. A trend going here; Cathay were heavily discounting Japan fares jus recently. ANA, JAL and CX all have far superior service and attentive flight attendants than the complacent JQ/QF offerings

    • Hopefully such price wars will burn Jetstar and Qantas

Nope. QF & JQ are fortunate with their timings. While this won't persuade the casual leisurely flyer, it'll retain loyal passengers as well as business travelers like myself. Certainly is fantastic pricing though. ANA is certainly a lot fairer on timings but you have to transit via SYD, likewise with CX and having to go via Hong Kong. Not ideal to be in the air for 14-15 hours + transit time and then have to jump straight in to a conference!

  • Shame I can't find any tickets for $794 between July 1-31 (Uni holidays) :(

  • Great find!

  • +1

    Just booked flights from 23/3 - 8/4
    $1100 all up
Jetstar was about 970 and china airlines 700-800

Considering these are direct flights to haneda. I think it's pretty good

  • Also, please don't cite Skytrax ratings where airlines basically have to pay for a higher rating. Unless of course, you think that Hainan, Asiana or god forbid Garuda Indonesia (banned from flying to the US for almost 9 years) are "supposedly better" than Qantas.

    • +4

Garuda Indonesia (banned from flying to the US for almost 9 years) are "supposedly better" than Qantas.

Having flown GA to CGK multiple times, as well as having flown their F product a few times to Europe, I can attest to them being a far superior product to Qantas, much like most other major Asian airlines. Given the fact that GA has gone through a radical change due to it's Quantum Leap program, one that's well studied in the aviations circles, why wouldn't it be better? It's ban was lifted back in 2009 and it's success since then has been well documented.

    • Garuda Indonesia (banned from flying to the US for almost 9 years)

All Indonesian airlines were banned from flying to the US not just Garuda. This was due to problems with the Civil Aviation regulator, maintaining ICAO standards, safety concerns and corruption.

The ban has recently been lifted. GA will begin flying to the USA in 2017.

Garuda Indonesia have transformed over the past few years and deserve their 5* rating. I fly with them regularly.

  • Please please please, JAL or ANA fly direct from Melbourne too, pretty please…

    • JAL won't fly from MEL due to it's codeshare agreement and ANA are unlikely to expand further until they experience greater growth. They have expressed an interest in MEL & PER but so far, no concrete news as of yet.

  • +2

Eh, JAL and ANA are virtually identical I'd say, more important factors are whether you have status with oneworld/star alliance, and the haneda vs narita distinction. Personally, as a oneworld emerald, choosing JAL is a no brainer especially considering first class lounge access at QF in SYD and JL in NRT (unlimited hibiki 17yo!). But can't deny how much more handy haneda is for getting in and out of tokyo.

  • Anyone know when the deal will end?

  • Just bought some tickets! (cheaper than JAL on the days I wanna travel) THANKS

Since there seems to be a lot of people with Japan trip experiences here, could i ask for some advice?

I am going to be in Japan for 2.5 weeks. My current "plan" is to stay in Tokyo for the first half then visit Kyoto for the second half (don't really wanna have to travel elsewhere since i only have so many days).

Would it be worth getting the JR pass? (I was thinking of taking Hikari from Tokyo to Osaka)

Also, if anyone has any affordable accommodation recommendations in both cities, it'd be much appreciated (don't mind shared bathrooms as long as location of accommodation is close to transport within city).

    • Are you sure you only want to stay in Tokyo and Kyoto for the whole of 2.5 weeks? I did 8 cities/towns in that time :P Travel in Japan is very easy and comfortable with their efficient trains. There's also very reasonably priced baggage forwarding service that will send your luggage ahead of you overnight from door to door.

You can use hyperdia to search for train fares (make sure you add on the seat fare). Bullet train between Tokyo and Kyoto is 13,910 yen one way. JR pass for a week is 38,880 yen for 1 week. If you're 100% sure you're only taking that 1 return train ride, then you don't need a JR pass. However, I would urge you to reconsider ;)

Edit: From Kyoto, you can make easy day trips to Osaka, Okayama, Himeji, Nara etc.

    • Also, if anyone has any affordable accommodation recommendations in both cities, it'd be much appreciated (don't mind shared bathrooms as long as location of accommodation is close to transport within city).

For Kyoto you can try Shimizu, but you need to book way in advance - I've never managed to get a room as they always seem to be booked out months ahead.

      • OMG thank you so much for your reply!!!! DAMN Shimizu is sold out already.. FOR JUNE! WHAT THE! haha

Well I was thinking 10 days in Tokyo, taking my time to shop around and visiting exhibitions etc, maybe spending a day or two around Kusatsu onsen (it's around 3 hours away from Tokyo right?). I will be with my mum and neither of us want jam packed journey :S wanna have some free time here and there for rest :)

Then moving to Kansai area, mainly for temples and scenery in Kyoto (5 days) then thinking of Nara and Oosaka (4 days?).

Do you think it'll be easier to move Tokyo->Nara->Kyoto->Oosaka? As I will be flying in to Tokyo then flying out from Kansai airport. Or just Tokyo->Kyoto then other places?

I am still VERY early in planning so I have NO CLUE hahaha (By the way, your post prompted me to take this trip so THANKS!!)

        • If you're only doing Tokyo, Nara, Kyoto and Osaka, you only need to find accommodation in two places - Tokyo and either Osaka or Kyoto, depending on which destination you spend more time in. Personally I would pick Kyoto as it provides more of a contrast to Tokyo. From Kyoto, Nara and Osaka is just a day trip.

          • Kyoto - Osaka is only 15 mins bullet train ride or 30 mins limited express.
          • Kyoto - Nara is 35-45 mins train ride depending on which train company you choose

Sorry I don't know anything about Kusatsu onsen but you should be able to find the information you need here. Yeah it looks like if you want to take your time experiencing the hot springs, you'd need to spend a night or two there.

You still have plenty of time to plan your trip :)

        • @A3Australia: Oh my goodness thank you so much for suggesting Air BNB, I hadn't even considered it!! I have now booked 3 accommodations at half the cost of hotels, thanks!
