    Prices are not that attractive

    • +3

      You can find them cheaper?

      • +1

        XA $199 @vodafone link

        • +8

          Locked :)

        • @tightarse: To Vodafone…. :|

        • +2

          @tightarse: Someone mentioned in the comments they got the phone unlocked as well, plus a free $30 365 day expire sim card

        • +3

          @Kelberos: I am pretty sure vodafone is much better than you think now.

          In sydney metro, vodafone network much reliable than optus's

        • +3

          @John Kelvin: And Telstra is more reliable than all of them particularly in the more rural areas.

        • +10

          @John Kelvin:

          vodafone network much ____ reliable than optus's

          It's like choose your own adventure.

        • @Clear: depends where you spend most at

        • @John Kelvin: Agreed, for my 3G usage Vodafone works well. Taking into account international calls it is my better option. For 2G Voda may also be king.

        • +2

          I picked up a xa prepaid for 199 at voda and seems they gave me a unlocked one with a sim starter kit. I assumed it was locked but it didnt come with the typical vodafone style prepaid packaging. Tested with my boost sim and im a happy chappy.

        • @John Kelvin: Could also have Vodafone bloat on it, something to consider too. I would think the Sony direct handsets are free of carrier bloat.

        • @PainToad: Damn, you just reminded me I forgot to order the Choose your own Hitler adventure book :(

        • +1

          @Clear: But who cares about 'rural' areas? The only people who live in rural areas are farmers and outback hicks with no teeth. Both of those groups have no need for phones, computers or internet. As long as they have beer and ciggies they are happy.

        • +1

          @Wonderman: Rural covers areas outside of metro and capital cities where bands like B28 are more widespread and usable. I live in a capital city, work across 2 states and regularly travel to small towns and rural areas. Telstra performs significantly better than the others in every place.

      • Also of note, not just Vodafone but a google search will reveal the ability to purchase an X series for $489 (grey import, Aus warranty).

        • And they are "new"

        • @googleyahoo69: They are, boxed and all. Just don't expect anything more than handset, USB cable, and wall plug in the box.

      • -2

        @tightarse One question mark does not simply
        make your sentence a question.

  • +7

    People confirmed the Vodafone prepaid XA is actually unlocked from Vodafone shop.

    • People also confirmed it was locked eg myself :(

  • -8

    i dont like these phones because their batteries are soooo small and dont last long at all vs the competition. Moto Z Play im looking at you

  • S7 Edge or Xperia X performance?

    • +1

      Edge is much bigger.

  • -1

    I'm logged in, but I still see Xperia X as $799?

    • +3

      Did you read the title?

      • -1

        Sorry… my bad. In a rush to buy!

      • Have you used any of these phones and got a good experience?

  • -7

    Self cracking screens and random Phantom touch? No thanks.

    • Which one are you referring to? I have to get my wife a new phone, she has an LG G4 with Phantom touches… dont want that drama again!

      • There's been some reports of devices in people's pockets supposedly waking up that I've read - but seriously if your screen is facing against your skin, the thin pocket lining isn't going to stop the phone from acknowledging touches - make sure your phone's locked and don't hit the wake buttons as you put it away ;)

        • +2

          i had a z2 that was completely "possessed"… dialing,writing messages etc… cant do nothing but turn it off… but also had an ipad mini with same problem… maybe im the haunted one hehehe

        • @tagniteroi:
          Awwwww sheeeeet!
          Sounds like some poltergeists are messing with you :P

        • +3

          @tagniteroi: I have a z and its a delight, 3 years in not even a scratch, bought a case from mall case guy Nd its protected from falls onto tiles, concrete and wood.

          I might be an exception (but I dont belive I am) but I love Sony phones, wouldnt buy anything else now. (maybe the pixel if it wasnt a grand…)

        • Did you enable double touch to wake?

        • +1

          @Slippery Fish: im a huge sony fan as well! :) didnt stop me from getting another one.from vaios to cameras, i think they are really well made.i had the problem with the z2 but they replaced under warranty.and apple… well..they didnt replace my mini…

        • @LilDude:
          I'll have to agree with you on this.
          Double touch to wake was enabled for me and lots of phantom activities.
          Ever since turning it off, the phone was great!

        • @LilDude: no.

        • @junkyster: I have touch to wake turned on my Z5 Compact and have no issues whatsoever.

        • @tagniteroi: My Sony C5 does the same thing. Can't find the bl**dy receipt either to take it in for warranty.

    • +1

      …And don't forget waterproof phones that Sony doesn't seem to want to cover for water damage :p

      • +3

        Yeah they changed their stance on it because people are freaking idiots.
        Essentially people would drown their phones and either plug in to charge while it's still wet, or not allow the water to drain out of the headphone jack and wonder why their phones didn't like it.
        So they changed their stance to "okay fine it's rain proof, stop being idiots" to cover that.

        • And yet Sony had promo photos of the phone being used underwater on their website - How dare people copy what they see on the Sony website :p

          Your comment about clearing out the water is a valid one, but perhaps some education is required in that respect (if you say it's waterproof, make just as much effort to explain that it needs to be dry again before you charge it) - not everybody is as "educated" as you or I.

          You mention rain being fine, but there are people who have ruined their phone thanks to rain, and it appears as though Sony won't even help them with that.

          You are always going to get stupid people, or those that try to cheat the system, but using a "waterproof", supposedly IP compliant, phone near water shouldn't be an automatic warranty deny ;-)

        • +2

          @oz-dave: I'd agree with that. I have a very old Sony Acro S that's still waterproof. But this was I think their first one - every port is covered, and I've dunked it several times in the ocean, and pools.
          They need more of this imo:
          http://www.xperiablog.net/2014/08/11/xperia-z2-survives-six-…

          Make Sony great again! ;)

      • Not surprising to be honest . I doubt many would cover it. I know Apple won't for my iPhone 7

  • +1

    X discounted by 25%. X Performance discounted by 30%. Was going to buy X, but might go for X Performance now.

    • the X is part of the open devices project. x performance not listed "maybe" in future…

  • Any comment on the XA Ultra please?

    • +1

      For the price, not too bad.

      But please note, it's not water proof.

      16GB inner storage (less than 10G you can use) a little bit small nowadays.

      • ohhhhh and just realised it doesn't support Quickcharge as well!

        Will pass then…

  • +1

    Why would you buy the Sony XA over Moto G4+?

    • +10

      Because it's not an oversized turd.

      • What's wrong with the G4+?

        • Some people don't want to use a phablet as a phone.

  • No Pink?

  • +8

    XZ is the best Sony phone, and it's nowhere to be seen. Thanks, but no thanks, Sony.

    • It's out of stock and looks like it won't be on sales.

      • Where is the big screen tv you have promised for months??? hahahaha

  • +13

    Bear in mind Sony use DHL and they will insist that you sign on delivery. You will not be able to receive your order unless you can set 4 hours aside to wait for them somewhere or arrange for a neighbor to wait for you. I always get negged for this but I personally have not been able to successfully arrange delivery of a Sony order. If you work during the day and don't have anyone to act as your proxy then your only option will be to deliver it to your work, and that only works if you have a job where you can guarantee you will be in a particular spot for a four hour window. Any of these options will require many long waits on hold as you try to organise something.

    • +4

      In addition the ones in my area wont get out of their vehicle to walk up the driveway and wont drive up it either (standard straight 5m driveway, battleaxe). The only way we got our item (from Sony) was to run down our driveway when we saw them coming. So all up it took us about a month of rearranged visits with us being home each time for half a day. I'm done with DHL.

    • If your neighbour can sign for you, people in your company or office could also sign for each other. Why do you need a four-hour window at work?

      • That would only work if you had a nominated person that you knew would be available for the whole period. I tried that with the Security Desk in our building but they still tried to call me when they arrived and then drove off with the item. At which point I once again gave up on Sony/DHL. Be prepared to spend many hours on the phone…

    • Iffice works parcel locker…

      • +2

        They have told me they won't deliver to PO Boxes, collection lockers, etc

        • Oh thats gay… Make friends with an old house bound lady, she accepts all my stuff like that. In return I spray her house for ants ect when it needs it.

    • I just call the depot once I see it has been shipped and ask them to just leave it there for me to collect.

      • Tried that, only one depot in bris and its a 45 min drive.

    • I rearranged delivery for today when I missed it on Wednesday (I didn't receive any notice beforehand), took the day off work, but then DHL didn't show up! WTF…

  • -2

    Again, nothing to buy after 9 days.

    • +2

      3 days left for the tv you were harping on about for 8 months hahahaha

  • is the performance the best Sony phone now?
    how come the display is still fullhd? thought they made a 4k phone last yr.

    • +4

      The XZ is the current Sony Flagship phone, so nope. I guess they went with FHD to conserve battery, and at this size, you won't really notice any pixels unless you're using VR.

  • Just paid $280 last night at Bing Lee for XA white.
    Rang them today and they said no price matching.
    And rude as well.

    Anyways will never buy anything from them again. This was less than 24 hours ago, most other places like JB or officeworks would price match.

    But Sony has made it difficult as well, they want you to register to see the special price so retailers cannot see the price until they register and they will not do that 100% just to see the difference in price, my understanding is the price is only good for 24 hours like as in the 9th day of Christmas and the price goes back to normal after 24 hours this makes it all the more difficult to price match on top of the "must register to see the special price"

    Oh well got ripped off by Bing Lee by $51

    • did not you think you would be ripped off by Sony by $229, if it proves to be a lemon

      • it's actually not so bad for my purpose, I only call text check emails and music photos that's all. But will never buy anything from Bing Lee again, I need to purchase a fridge and washing machine next year guess who I will avoid.

        I have to say the white looks way better.

        And people here should also take note Bing Lee will not price match from manufacturer despite bought less than 24 hours ago. Bought it last night at 830 pm.
        This morning rude and patronising and refused to price match a miserable $51 for such a large company.

        Hope they go the way of Dick Smith.

        • +1

          Companies aren't obligated to price match an item you've already bought.

        • @joeflacco:

          They actually do have a price match policy

          https://www.binglee.com.au/competitor-pricing-policy which I think I met the criteria less than 24hours ago. I mean this is not like buying a car, it's a FMCG.

          1. The Competitor must:

          (a) be a registered Australian business, have an Australian Business Number and be registered for Goods and Services Tax ("GST"); and
          (b) have at least two (2) physical retail stores located in Australia operated under the Competitor’s name.

          1. The product offered by the Competitor must be:

          (a) brought to Bing Lee's attention by the Customer at the time of price matching;
          (b) identical to a product offered for sale by Bing Lee including the same brand/model/series/specification/features/colour/year of production and condition;
          (c) in stock with the Competitor (not available for back order);
          (d) not offered as part of a bundled or bonus offering at the time of price matching;
          (e) in stock with Bing Lee at the relevant store (not available for back order); and
          (f) available for immediate purchase from the Competitor.

          1. The Competitor's price of the product must:

          (a) be the price of the product as sold individually and not as part of a bundled sale;
          (b) be GST inclusive;
          (c) include any delivery and handling charge; and
          (d) be verifiable by Bing Lee.

          1. Bing Lee does not price match on:

          (a) Products which are offered through eBay or as part of a bundled, tied (finance or payment), gift card, coupon or bonus offering at the time of price matching;
          (b) Commercial quantities, delivery charges or handling charges;
          (c) Finance or credit terms and does not offer finance or credit on the sale of price matched product;
          (d) Competitor's clearance lines, display stock, liquidation or external administration sales, limited stock offers or time limited or special promotion stock sell-downs including restructuring or amalgamation;
          (e) Grey imports. "Grey imports" are products acquired from internationally based distributors other than the manufacturer's locally licensed importer. They are sometimes referred to as "direct import" or "grey market" products and are usually supplied directly to the customer from overseas; or
          (f) Products or product lines nominated by Bing Lee as being excluded from this Policy.

          It is of major concern that retailers sell more than what the manufacturer sells it for.

        • @joeflacco:

          TGG did 30 day price guarantee but not Bing Lee.

          https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/30-day-price-guarantee

        • @superforever: My point is that they've gone above and beyond to provide that. They're not obligated in any way to do so.

        • +2

          @paloverde88: It is a price match policy prior to purchase, not retrospective. The first line clearly states:

          Bing Lee will match a Competitor's advertised price for a product to a prospective customer of Bing Lee ("Customer") subject to each of the following conditions:

          Prospective - expected or expecting to be the specified thing in the future, likely to happen at a future date

    • It might be below Bing lee's cost price on what they sold. Hardly "ripping you off."

      • Retailers should never exceed the price manufacturer sell them for to the public.

        • +1

          Here it's a closed sale to members - and only for one day. Most retailers that have matching will exclude sales that are not publically available i.e. that you need to sign up like this.

          Also, as tech prices fall, it's certainly possible that retailer stock could have cost more, being paid earlier, than the price of a later 1 day sale in the product life cycle.

        • +1

          @odysseus:

          Because anyone can rock up and sign up so it is essentially a public offering not private per se.

          Just because tech prices fall does not mean customers have to think of the sellers' best interest when making any decision, returning, refunding, price matching or otherwise. There's not empathy for retailers who have stocked up, conversely there's no champagne for buyers when retailers exceed their profit target. Customers only look out for their own private self-interest, customers always want the cheapest they can get it for. Whether the seller is out on a limb to complete the transaction or not makes no difference to the buyer.

        • @paloverde88:

          Item 4 (d) Competitor's clearance lines, display stock, liquidation or external administration sales, limited stock offers or time limited or special promotion stock sell-downs including restructuring or amalgamation;

    • +1

      Officeworks wouldn't price match as the price still comes up as $499 on the Sony website (since you need to log in).

      I know this because I ordered from Officeworks yesterday at $288! So I'm now ordering direct from Sony, and will return the Officeworks phone.

      • At least office works let's you return under change of mind policy Bing Lee like all Asian mobs where in Asia there is no such thing as change of mind prohibits return, even less than 24 hours of purchase. Such Asian mentality has no place in Western retail. Consumers can realise they have picked the wrong item wrong colour wrong choice just wrong item altogether. This sort of Asian business mindset where "it's your fault, no change of mind" is like buying second hand items. Most if not all large Western outfit wants consumers to be 100% happy and will allow exchange or refund within a reasonable period in my case less than 24 hours. Like I said, Bing Lee can go lump it. After so many years in business, there's a reason why they could not grow into a national store like JB. They simply don't understand customers. Tragic.

    • why not just bought another one from Sony, then return it to binglee?

      you don't even need to mention Price match policy.

      You win, no one lost.

      • Bing Lee does not have a return policy it must be manufacturer fault or item did not perform as expected under Australia Consumer Laws. Apart from that, no return of item for any other reason. Like I said, Asian business mindset where sellers have to be 100% happy , buyers:who gives a shite. *Asian Retail Business Model.

    I kinda want the XZ but deep down I know it's not as good, especially for the $999 asking price.

    • +1

      underwhelmed as well

    • +3

      Sony haven't really evolved their phones the way other manufacturers have over the last few years. Back in 2013, the Xperia Z was a fantastic top of the range phone with great specs that catered for that end of the market. Now look at what they are doing with the confusing branding (XZ… seriously, kill the Z brand then bring it back half assed) and very unattractive pricing.

      The sale prices for the above phone should have been the original RRPs when the phones first came out. On the XZ, it's a great phone, but i wouldn't recommend anyone pay $999 for it.

  • +1

    Thanks purchased the XA Ultra

    • Yep I am seriously considering that phone too… front camera flash would be awesome!

  • +1

    Be careful to make purchase on SONY AU online store.

    They use DHL CONNECTED VIEW which is a very doggy carrier.

    My parcel tracking is runing between on Out On board and Return to DEPOT for a week.

    I tried to contact their customer line, but seems quite busy and no one answered me all the time.

    I couldn't understand, I believe I wont receive it within the week.

    Go to store or kiosk is better choice

  • +1. Got the XA Ultra as well. But it says Back Order. The expected in-stock date is Sun Dec 11 2016, so not sure when I will be actually getting it. Also, I worry about the battery life. It is a for gift, so I mainly got it for the looks, screen and camera… the wow factors :)

  • I'm also looking at the Xperia XA Ultra but have the same concerns as well with the battery life.
    Anyone have any other suggestions for a 6" phone, dual sim?
    Thanks
