No thanks , 1080p should now be the standard for phones at this price mark

    • +8

$200 branded phone with 1080p is standard? I'd be a Chinese one at best.

      • +10

I'd be a Chinese one at best.

        It's ok to be Chinese.

        • +2

@plmko: you should see what comes out when a monkey types on an american iphone (oh wait it's also made in china) lol

        • +4

@plmko:EVERY phone was made in china now, iphone pixel nexus……

        • +2

          @homersyd:

I wonder if Trump will change that? iPhone made in USA one day? ;-)

        • +6

          @homersyd:

You laugh at the monkeys now, but come the year 3085…

        • +1

@plmko: by the rate we're going I doubt there will even be any animals left

        • Except if you are a phone with missing bands ….

    • +2

People happily buy 720p 5.5" phones still (Oppo F1s $318 at JB)… So this 5" incher should be fine haha :)

    • +5

      What about $900+ phones?

      294 ppi is plenty.

      • wow seriously didnnt know this, I thought they are all at least QHD…but no that'd be too "unappley"

  • +8

Nope nope nope. $200 for a backup phone is very expensive. You can buy a decent phone for $240 to replace your primary phone.

    • Suggestion with names would be great đź‘Ť
I liked this because it has NFC ( mobile payments) and also i think it supports fast charge as per few websites

      • +10

I think this is whats known as a backup phone. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/280909

        • Beware, this phone only support Telstra 3g :)

        • -1

@boomramada: how can it be Telstra if it's locked to Vodafone?

        • @bob19:

First of all, I'm referring to phone on the link above.

let me make it clear, if you want a phone to work on any 3g network, you need 2100MHz.
          But Voda use 850MHz 900MHz 2100MHz.

Only advantage of unlocking this phone is so you can work on Telstra not Optus.

So this phone certainly does not work for Optus or virgin. so its useless for some.

        • @boomramada:
          Thank you for your clarification.

      • +1

personal choice, for me a backup phone does not need to be full-fledged device since it is used temporarily until I get my primary phone back. As long as it does calls, sms, internet browsing & some apps can be installed (facebook, whatsapp etc), i can get by. Also a backup phone is used once or twice a year. Alcatel pop 5 (for optus) $69, Telstra 4GXHD $99, Alcatel Dex $79, Vodafone Smart mini $59, Vodafone Kosumi $69 are some of good backup phones.

Nexus 5X 16GB has been as low as $270

      • I liked this because it has NFC ( mobile payments)

Why not get an otherwise much better featured phone and just stick a PayTag under the back cover?

        • "PayTag" is that secure?

        • +1

          @hopper: Yes

        • +1

          paytag very thick and uncomforted

        • @anunknwon: 0.8mm isn't thick. Whoever told you that was lying :D

What do you mean by uncomforted?

    • Very true, my LeeCo 2 Pro has 10 core (deca core), 4gb ram for only 250 delivered. :) i am very happy with it.

  • This phone is cool for who do not own the nexus, iphone. if you have redmi or any other china phone. well why not switch? I will do because I have redmi note 2 prime lol I needed NFC to pay lol

    • -5

Instead of pulling out the phone out of your pocket why not pull out the wallet? Pay using real money or credit card/bank card?

      • +1

Even when I have my wallet, I use the phone. Since the chances are, I would've been playing with the phone (i.e. grocery list or check Ozbargain for specials) and because it takes longer to pull out wallet and pull out the card from the card slot.

      • Please go abroad, see how electronic payment systems have advanced in Japan and China before making a comment about how we should be anymore backward than we already are…

      • Just came back from Shenzhen, they hardly use NFC in China. Basically, if you use Alipay and Wechat on your phone, you can go out without any cash or cards. And now they are trying to "put" your driver's license into Alipay.

        • They have driver's licenses in China? (you know, just from observations here…)

      • Actually i stopped carrying my wallet when going to out on weekends.

        • No I can get cardless cash, and have NFC on my phone I'm the same. I can't remember the last time I even carried my wallet during the week.

      • I do not wanna make my wallet thicker try to put all my cards on apps and now bring 3 bank cards and looking for a card to process? its pain man. also I am looking for 5' phone atm

I trusted my bank app more than social app to pay in-store -.-

  • Nice small 5" phone and not too heavy at 137 grams. Looks like the camera could be a shocker though (read comments at the bottom).

    • Big difference between Recombu review of the camera and the comments on the review, ie night and day!!!

  • I am seriously considering buying an android phone as I just broke my 2& 1/2 years old LG G Pro2's SIM card reader. Can someone confirm this mobile can be unlocked easily (without money) ?

  • I bought this phone on Tuesday from the store in Watergarden (VIC), the phone is unlocked and the staff gave me a $40 starter pack. I gave the phone to my dad. He will bring this phone back to Hong Kong.

  • +2

I bought this phone on Tuesday from the store in Watergarden (VIC) for $199, the phone is unlocked and the staff gave me a $40 starter pack.

  • I've seen this phone in the shop.
To be frankly, it's one of the most stunning Android phones on the market. Much much more beautiful than shown in the picture.
I almost bought this one just because of the appearance.

  • So this phone is unlocked from Vodafone shop? Looks like a good phone for its price and it has band 28. Camera is probably not the best but looks on par to redmi or xiaomi Max.

    • Depends on the handset
If you get one designated as prepaid it will a cost to unlock. If you are lucky to get one that is being sold as prepaid but is designated as a post paid then the cost is free.

  • it is a great phone other than the not so great 720P screen and limited space , but expendable via microsd

  • This Sony vs Huawei GR3 for $198? I need a sub $200 phone to replace a 2G only phone. Aldi/telstra network.

    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/phones-accessories-gps/phones…

    • Sony if you care about updates and a nice UI that is close to stock. Also, NFC.

      • I guess it comes down to if the device unlocks for free or not…

      • seriously? huawei more lower spec

  • Missus needs a new phone to replaced her HTC M9 the kids have damaged. Still 12 months to go on contract with Voda, so this should do it nicely.
Didn't want to go grey import as if there was a problem, I would never hear the end of it :O

  • Confirmed locked. Waiting on the website to get it's act together before I can progress :(

    • did u try here to unlock

      • Yep, currently website says the device is not locked and therefore won't let me progress. However with an Aldi SIM in it it boots to a SIM unlock screen.

        • better get this sloved in the store when buying it. thx for sharing ur status. hope its gets unlocked it for u soon

        • @hopper: The guy instore punched the IMEI into the website prior to purchase and it said it was unlocked. :(

        • @CyberGenesys: Urgh, typical, I buy the phone and a better, hassle free deal pops up.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/281207

    • I'm an idiot, see below.

  • Is this price at Vodafone only for a Black XA? Do they have the Rose Gold?

    • Black only mate

  • UPDATING: After spending 3 hrs talking with Vodafone and Optus yesterday finally have an answer. this phone not actually lock with Vodafone. the device lock by Sony and you needed Master Unlock Code. which you can ask Vodafone to request one or try to reach Sony about this faulty. take about 2 days for this *I am on waiting for their email

    • any updates after reaching to SONY?

      • Update: They are not "Network locked" but "SIM Network locked". I didn't realise there was a difference. Im not sure where you get the code from otherwise, but I contacted Vodafone and they provided it. I punched the numbers into the site and at the end when it said it weas already unlocked there was an option to "contact support". A helpful guy named John explained:

"Our records indicate this IMEI is for a Sony Xperia XA, which should not be a device locked to the Vodafone Australia network.

If you are being prompted to enter a SIM “network unlock PIN” (or similar) then I have provided a standard Sony unlock guide, and a code provided by Sony (all Sony handsets do have a code provided regardless of lock status)."

        • got the code from vf csr as well, happy

      • yup have a code to unlock the device yesterday and FREE so this is free to unlock :)

  • Anyone know which stores have any stock?

My nearest Voda store has this trend of items mysteriously going "sorry none left out the back" when you tell them you're not after a contract…

    • (level 3) High point in vic has stock, they can also back order i guess.

      • Thanks, I'll pay them a visit!

        • Call them before u visit.

    • Strangely enough, that is the tone of most of the stores it seems. 'Na, none left…'

      • Seems like they are after commissions for selling plans now…they don't want to sell prepaid handsets even online…

        • May well be case, as an individual can't fault with that as we all r supposed to make a living out of the job ;)

  • Weird sort of unlocking situation…it wants an unlock code when I insert the Optus sim but vodafone unlock service says it's already unlocked… Wtf vodafone?!

Waiting for the drones at the shop to make some sense of it now

    • read the previous posts, you will not want to waste your time to visit store. trust me.

      • +1

Sorted mate, got tye code in a day

        • cOOl ;0

        • @anunknwon: interestingly, does the sony network unlock code is unique or same code to be applied in one model.

        • @maxall: each device have different code. very simple talking with vodafone gave them IMEI, fullname, email, contact number then wait for 48 business hours. they will email you a code to unlock SIM network.

  • Update in case I missed it…

I bought one from the Highpoint store. The website said unlocked but it wanted a "SIM network unlock PIN". So I put in the details into the support request form, and next day they sent a code which worked. Done.

  • Most Vodafone stores on the Gold Coast were awaiting stock to come-but as luck would have it, the Helensvale store had 1 in stock.

    So I bought myself one.

Entered the IMEI of mine on the Vodafone website & I got a unlock code straight away.

  • haven't tried to unlock it yet, but I went to get this with my brother today and the vodafone store in Pitt St said they no longer allowed the unlocking for free. He bought the last one in stock today.

  • I picked one up today in Brisbane Queen Street mall. First shop said that they did not do it as a prepaid. Tried second store which did (go figure). Was told it was unlocked but have not tried my Telstra sim yet… Some Voda bloat and bootloader is locked. Can request this to be unlocked through Sony website. Cheers
